- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Not much good for digg.com users, i was under the impression everyone still lived with their parents...
- 4answer2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Should be:
1- Firefox
2- Spybot & Ad-Aware
3- AVG Anti Virus
4- Yahoo or Google email account
5- Eat - adml_shake, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Well as far as buying her that stuff i'm sure she could do it on her own. And if you only have to go work on her computer once a year, you are very very very lucky indeed.
- conedude13, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1#1 preform full system backup
...
#9 preform full system check
I guess you shouldn't stick to the order of the article. :P - murph2481, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yea I just use VNC on all my families computers so they are easy to fix anywhere
- ahmerhussain, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Get her a mac mini or an iMac
They look really nice - wired4u, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Get mom a mac, all issues will be solved
- metacoola, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Ill save it for mothers day instead.
- simplisticton, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Or replace #5 (Install Firefox), #7 (Update anti-virus & spyware defn's), and #9 (run a system check) by giving her a brand new install of Ubuntu. :)
Seriously, I put Ubuntu on my aunt's computer over a year ago and she hasn't stopped thanking me yet... - tomaburque, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Kind of obvious: Disk cleanup, disk defrag, remove spyware and delete IE icon.
- FriedGeek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0When will I have time to eat? (Pocketing my LiveCD)
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0So true! My mom's Dell needs a complete overhaul.
- Kilrag, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Gave them my old ibook 12 inch, Talked them (Mom and Dad) into Cable access, Upgraded the ram to 1 gig, Firefox, ex-cell, etc etc plus five ours or tutorial on how to us the software. Oh and alos how to make pictures smaller in Phtoshop.
- optik, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Well im gettin the digg efeect..... mirror?
- spinxter, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0My mom refuses to use Bit Torrent because she is afraid of the "P2P Police" so whenever she misses a TV show she makes me download it and put it on a CD and take it to her. Yesterday I got her to install Foldershare on her computer. Now I can Bit Torrent TV shows and then send them to her over the 'net without Big Brother knowing she is violating some silly law. Sure to save me much trouble.
- partisan01, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I had my mom buy an iBook.....all computer support problems solved.
- celeb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0get rid of the spyware/malware, install more memory and hound the cable company to allow us to use the cable lines they installed 4 years back so I can fix her pc remotely and ditch her dialup
- mfalkon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Good list, but I have to get Mom and Dad off dial up first before some of those really become useful (i.e. Skype). I have mentioned several times, they should get a Mac Mini, which I think they will once their current PC finally craps out for good.
A good way to convince them of this is when they ask how to solve their computer problems, explain all the possiblities to them as detailed as possible (which they'll hear the teacher from Charlie Brown's voice after a minute or two), then follow it up with, "or, you can just get a Mac and not worry about it anymore." - Apreche, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Uninstall Windows and replace it with Ubuntu.
- thegrinder, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0How about teaching your mom how to use a computer so you don't have to come home and fix it for her all the time?
- shafiq, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0digg effect
- KernelPanic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Last year for thanksgiving I installed a spam filter so my mom would stop getting all the lesbian porn email.
KernelPanic - netnerd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0From TFA: "You love your mom, right?"
Is it wrong that the first thing I thought of was "I love *your* mom?"
~sigh~ Such is boredom at work. - legal1aaron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Digg totally crashed the site - does anyone know of a mirror or can post the list somewhere else themselves?
- kdehead, on 10/12/2007, -0/+010 things? i'd just have the one - install Ubuntu.
- dreadlock7, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0if I changed anything to the comupter my parents use they wouldn't be to happy. They are computer illiterate, so "change is bad" for them. I got them using firefox and for some reason that was quite an adjustment. I might do one or two of the things on the list but all 10 would probably drive them crazy. it'd drive me crazy too cuz they'd be calling me to help them. lol
- guhappy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Install PCLinuxOS and your post-install routine of installing quicktime, real, flash, java, nvidia and/or ati drivers disappears. Put it on your mom's PC, but you just might put it on your PC also. Happy Thanksgiving Diggers :-)
- bebopredux, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0flammable,
I'm guessing you use Slackware then? :) - Quantic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is one the worst articles i've ever read. Unlike some of you, somepeople cant afford to do half of the stuff listed, besides that most mothers of a "lower-income" family probably share no need to spend time ona computer listening to music on their brand new Thanks Giving day present (As stupid as that sounds), rather then to worry about where the turkey will come from. Besides that I dont really know any parent that sits around talking on skype or could really care care if they can listen to Fat-Soccer-Mom Trio's newest album on a Logitech 5.1 Z-5300e sound system. These sits assume to much about the users. No digg.
- qster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0A full backup of her files... what, you mean solitaire?
- Blizaine, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Applying this list to Mac users:
1) Backup her files - Backup 3.1 comes with .mac
2) Picasa – comes w/ iPhoto, FAR better
3) LCD - iMac came with a 20" LCD
4) Speakers – Came w/ Harmon Kardon speakers
5) Firefox - While I use firefox, no reason to switch her from Safari (now IE on the hand... great idea to switch to FF)
6) Evernote? I don't see the benefit, no first hand experience, could be cool....
7) Update AntiVirus and Spyware tools... ummm.... Mac, no needed ;)
8) Skype? Screw VoIP... It's so 2 years ago... We use iChatAV (comes w/ every Mac). Cristal-clear two-way Audio/Video in H.264 format. We can even multipoint in the Grandparents. She sees the kids several times a week. Amazing!
9) System Check software – not needed
10) Get her a real email address... OK, I like this one. - quirky, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0mac fanboys aside, if your mom does infact have a pc, it's nice to do some 'spring-cleaning' for her.
but mine's pc and mac savvy, so i guess i'm still looking for something to get her...
q - vpisteve, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Dear God, I fear the day my mom discovers IM, let alone Skype!
*Shudder* - .Steven, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0id: 4892
- diggnationdevon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Get her a mac.
- Bungledust, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Here's mine:
http://somethingfm.blogspot.com/2005/11/top-10-things-to-do-for-mums-pc-on.html - ender52, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0scorwitz - use picasa to backup all images you know you want to a dvd. Back up rest of images to different dvd. Delete all. Reload picasa images. Save other disk in case you missed something.
on topic - not a bad list, but buying your mom an LCD screen and computer speakers is a little different category than backing up her files and updating virus software. - Matrixsjd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0maybe, throw it out and buy her a Mac?? just a suggestion ;-)
- aquax, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"I had my mom buy an iBook.....all computer support problems solved."
That is EXACTLY what I did :-) - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0place a good copy of linux on it ;)
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0#0 install Beige Box OSx86 on her Dell
- MattPF, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I actually got sick of family and friends asking me to tune up their XP installs, so I wrote a detailed article on the entire process and posted it on our family website here: http://www.farleyfamily.net/articles/tuneup/ [farleyfamily.net]
It's a comprehensive step-by-step of what any aunt or uncle should be able to follow in order to free system resources and make for a better (faster!) desktop experience. - scorwitz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Question here, While Picasa is wonderful as all get out, am I the only one who now has multiple copies of my damn photos all over my computer and my external hard drive, NONE of which have the edits saved into them that I made in Picasa!!!! I'm so frustrated. Now, I don't know what to delete and what to keep, and what's the use of cropping and adjusting contrast and the like if they don't get saved??!?!?!?
- mmpkidz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Save all the hassle and eat Thanksgiving dinner at a restaurant.
- DanMD, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0That's a nice list, stuff that I should do on my computer.
- eclectro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0gu-happy -- that's exactly what my mom is getting - pclinuxos installed!
- Bungledust, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Do you really think Mum would take the change from IE to Firefox easily? As simple as it may seem, I think my mother would have a heart attack!
- anagami, on 07/02/2008, -0/+0I will buy my mom a Mac when I've the money (I'm serious).
- leha, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0The only good thing you can do is to install linux on here computer so that you can solve any problem (even over modem) if they appear. I thrown MythTV as a bonus so she can watch pictures, tv, music etc. without touching a keyboard.
