1. Denmark
2. Netherlands
3. Switzerland
4. Korea
5. Norway
6. Iceland
7. Finland
8. Sweden
9. Canada
10. Belgium - chris9902, on 02/15/2008, -2/+36They don't need defence because they don't go round the world bombing people and protecting their empire.
- cricketsymphony, on 02/15/2008, -1/+34spoken like a true internet tough guy
- smacksaw, on 02/15/2008, -1/+29Poor Denmark. The best in broadband yet banned from The Pirate Bay.
How cruel. - inactive, on 02/15/2008, -2/+29heh, its always the small countries of europe that are the best at everything...
- gummih, on 02/15/2008, -0/+23I see you are wise enough not to piss off Iceland. Very cautious of you, sir.
- Scynet, on 02/15/2008, -1/+22How relevant.
- benroy, on 02/15/2008, -0/+21Before I realized that I'm retarded, I thought it said "...Weird Countries." I was kind of disappointed.
- cdigioia, on 02/15/2008, -0/+16I'm in South Korea (suburb of Seoul) and I can download a full movie in under 3 minutes -my torrents max at ~7.2MB/sec. Website downloads are slower because I visit western-based sites/site limits on download speed.
I'm told this will be about $23/month, but I haven't gotten my first bill yet (someone else signed me up for the internet). I also haven't experimented enough to see if my max is always around 7.2MB/sec., or if it's a locally shared connection that varies.
Sure beats my 150KB/sec. download speeds back home though...(US) - acceleration, on 02/15/2008, -1/+16Typical...
- Rickard, on 02/15/2008, -0/+13Hmm. That's odd, the 2 litre bottle of Coke I bought at the supermarket yesterday here in Sweden was more like £1.40 + recycling deposit (£0.16).
- bering, on 02/15/2008, -2/+15Woo, we're number 1! I have 20/1 mbit myself.
- drgmdp, on 02/15/2008, -0/+13i bet his e-penis must be huge
- EarlOfLade, on 02/15/2008, -0/+13So, you are like ... what? 13? 14?
- dblbender, on 02/15/2008, -0/+12the WWW was invented in the CERN in Geneva, Switzerland, but the internet itself was a US invention
- kernel16, on 02/15/2008, -0/+12Hurray for Canada, holding it up for larger countries.
- lucutus, on 02/15/2008, -1/+13But in the US for every broadband subscriber there are probably 3 neighbors stealing their WiFi signal!
- TypeEE, on 02/15/2008, -0/+11It's because Hong Kong is not a country by itself.
- judgeFire, on 02/15/2008, -0/+10Please don't confuse social democrat with socialist.
- biotch, on 02/15/2008, -2/+12FTA: "The Internet's history began in the United States, where Americans had the best access to the Internet's resources for several years. According to technology experts like S. Derek Turner, as more countries began to link to the Internet, a strange thing happened. "
Yeah... Bush got elected and, with republicans in congress, reallocated the various internet funding initiatives (championed by Al Gore) to the missile defense system, a tax cut for the rich, and Iraq. - ledguitar, on 02/15/2008, -6/+16Whoops.. I was about to digg you down and say "United States isn't even on the list. Denmark is number 1." I forgot that there are people outside of the US on Digg.
- Adamande, on 02/15/2008, -0/+9Not true. I live in Norway and never paid more than 35% tax on income. And those taxes go to stuff like healthcare and schooling. (No need for expensive insurances.) Goods are more expensive but salaries are higher so it evens out. Norwegians, for example, pay a very little percentage of their pay-checks for food compared to people in most other countries.
We're not socialist either. We're a social-democracy. Practicing pure capitalism in most areas. We just decided to work together as a population to guarantee each other health and education because we appreciate a strong middle class and little economic division in the population. I don't know if that's better or worse than other systems, but for me personally it's working out just fine. And of course, the sweet internet-connection is a huge plus ;-) - techresearcher, on 02/15/2008, -1/+10Well at least Canada is on the list, even though its Number 9.
- pimpofpixels, on 02/15/2008, -3/+11If California wasn't attached to this giant cyst known as the rest of America we're probably be up there too.
- Amric, on 02/15/2008, -0/+8It is just a matter of time before the ban is lifted. As far as I know that ban is agains EU law.
- calibration, on 02/15/2008, -0/+8It's not measuring speed, just subscribers per 100.
- bwilliams80, on 02/15/2008, -1/+8http://computer.howstuffworks.com/most-wired-count ...
- BlackCow, on 02/15/2008, -0/+7Make schweet LAN parties not war.
But really whats their internet connection have to do with LAN parties? - Scynet, on 02/15/2008, -1/+8But competition drives innovation.
- cyberdork, on 02/15/2008, -0/+7Just that the conservative parties in Europe would be called socialist parties in the US, just like the Republicans would be called extreme Nationalists in Europe.
- LimeParrot, on 02/15/2008, -0/+7I found the photo of the monks on the internet pretty interesting...
- drgmdp, on 02/15/2008, -0/+6japan is not listed, so it's not about weirdness
- drgmdp, on 02/15/2008, -1/+7AND something tells me that if your country was on the list you wouldn't be thinking that way
- ambion, on 02/15/2008, -1/+7Woo! Finland! This must be completely due to all the love that Conan O'Brien sent us :)
...well that and Santa... - madmax85, on 02/15/2008, -0/+6I pay $25 for 100/100Mbit in sweden.
- Narcowski, on 02/15/2008, -0/+6And over here in the US 8/1 is considered fast -_-;
- EarlOfLade, on 02/15/2008, -0/+6Yeah well, I have 3Mbit/S for $40/month, so you do the math. Remember that salaries here in the US is lower than what they are in Norway and that most people make way less money per month than Nordmenn does :-)
- Data33, on 02/15/2008, -2/+7Interesting that every single Nordic country is on the top 10 list.
- gegroff, on 02/15/2008, -1/+6Man... we (America) suck!
- drgmdp, on 02/15/2008, -1/+6@poppacherry
oh, and you know that because...? - chobit, on 02/15/2008, -0/+5Mobile rules Japan. While for those with computers their internet speeds are fastest in the world, many people use only mobiles, which nowadays connect at 3Mbps.
- irvie, on 02/15/2008, -0/+5Don't give him too much credit...
A 13 year old might have the common sense to stop posting when he's already proven that he's a moron. - Toxigen, on 02/15/2008, -0/+5I agree with Chris9902, as for poppacherry and nospinhere:
They form a large part on NATO, some of them were even involved in starting it. Holland is also carrying more than its share in NATO work and UN funding.
So you can Universally Go ***** Yourself! - springboks, on 02/15/2008, -1/+6Scandinavia seems be light years ahead of the world! On technology, recycling! Just goes to show you small countries have the edge in many respects.
- Woolmonkey, on 02/15/2008, -0/+4No FTA
"The OECD includes DSL, cable modem, fiber-optic and local area network (LAN) connections in its calculations. It doesn't include dialup modem users, because those users don't qualify as broadband subscribers. "
So dialup isn't included in the count - Toxigen, on 02/15/2008, -0/+4That's inaccurate. Yes they are socialist and yes they have 40-70% tax (based on income). However being in Holland and paying that amount of tax, cola is nowhere near 3pounds a bottle (more like 1pound). Besides only single people without kids pay that amount of tax, the rest get lots of tax cuts for kids, daycare, school/college, mortgage, etc.. They just tend to spend their money more wisely, investing in infrastructure. The most important factor is that the majority population in these countries is clustered together so it takes less investment to reach more people.
- pyrates, on 02/15/2008, -0/+4Land of the free indeed? And ignorant in your case.
- garionw, on 02/15/2008, -0/+4"The Internet's history began in the United States, where Americans had the best access to the Internet's resources for several years."
Wasn't the internet a European invention, or have I been reading too much Dan Brown - cyberdork, on 02/15/2008, -0/+4I'm single without kids, living in the Netherlands. My salary is above the national average and I pay 27.5% income tax!
You seem to count social security, the unemployment insurance etc taxes! - zigspective, on 02/15/2008, -0/+4Hmm last time I checked I could get a two litre for about $1.80 Canadian, which is less than 1 British pound.
