- addisonj, on 10/12/2007, -2/+28I am amazingly suprised... by no means (except for the arabian prince) are any of those cars extremely extravagent, save maybe the bently, even that though, no ferraris or lambo's. geez, not even a mercedes in the pack. I guess that might explain why these are the 10 richest men, not spending there money on ultra luxy million dollar vehicles, geez, if i had that kind of cash, i would pick up two bugatis. Not to mention having my own racing team
- cody50, on 10/12/2007, -1/+26@ Forma
I thought dell would be driving a fire truck!
thank you, i'll be here till thursday. - Forma, on 10/12/2007, -2/+24Dell drives a pretty obnoxious car though. Worse then the prince's IMO.
- mikeoh, on 10/12/2007, -1/+20The Ikea guy driving an old Volvo car is a champ!
- chris9902, on 10/12/2007, -5/+23you look at Gate's and Allen's cars you can see they want those cars because they like them not because they have the highest price tag.
Dell has a Hummer. Is it ironic that he has a massive, over-priced slow car? - ePlus, on 10/12/2007, -2/+20" In fact, due to the 959’s questionable emissions and unknown crash ratings, it took a federal law signed by President Clinton for Bill Gates to legally drive his 959 on American roads. "
Money can buy anything... - fli7e, on 10/12/2007, -6/+24Could anyone tell me... why it matters at all how many diggs a story has?
Seriously, dude: get your head out of your ass. Either read the story and discuss its content, or continue to keep your "if it doesn't have a million diggs it shouldn't be on the homepage" attitude and say nothing at all. - cadavreexquis, on 10/12/2007, -2/+17...and a nice contrast to Michael Dell, with his ultimate a**hole vehicle.
- billyliberty, on 10/12/2007, -2/+17Everyday vehicle? From the paragraph regarding Bill Gates:
"His daily driver, a 1999 Porsche 911 Convertible, is ripe for replacement..." - weiran, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15Not everyone has a car fetish, and not every rich person buys and drives expensive cars (as shown).
I love the Volvo though. - noGoodNamesLeft, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14By the way, let's put this in perspective. A Porsche 911 is an expensive car by most people's standards; but if we assume that Gates is worth US $50 billion, and that a 911 costs US $100,000, then he could afford to buy 500,000 of them.
500,000.
Half. A. Million.
Not to mention that his 911 is already 7 years old... let's bear in mind that the guy could afford to buy a new one every day for the rest of his life (if he lives to be 100), and he'd still be less than a tenth of the way through his fortune. - gamasutra, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14volkswagen golf
- fli7e, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14Not sure how much you know about cars, but there is NOTHING ordinary about the Porsche 959. Read up on it... it may not quite be a Veyron, but it is a technological marvel nonetheless—even by today's standards.
- JuyLe, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13Mr Kamprad car really rocks. This man is so modest, I love that. I would personally drive a black Porsche GTIII 2006' model, only 112k€ though, but really nice and quite sober in black.
- speezer, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12Cars are like paperclips for a billionaire.
- Hollywood, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10But billionaires can afford gold paperclips...
- noGoodNamesLeft, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Yeah, but I bet that as soon as Ellison sees this article, he's off to buy *three* identical Daewoo Matizs...
- freestufftimes, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12Rich People don't become rich by spending money on frivolous things. Yes, they all could buy ferraris at this point, but they didn't get to the point that they are all at by spending every dime that they make. America as a whole could learn something from these people.
- autodata, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8@Forma: so true. Dell is proof that money can't buy class.
- sansbury, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Yes, they prefer practical things like 400' yachts whose DINGHY is 60'...
http://www.yachtcrew-cv.com/resources/yachts/Octopus.htm - DonPMitchell, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10Bill used to have a reputation for driving fast. Part of the MS lore, when I was there, was that Bill held the record for getting from campus to Seatac airport in the shortest time. At some point, I suppose the stockholders asked him very politely to drive more safely.
- dhughes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7 Rich people are cheap, it's how most of them got rich. You won't stay rich for very long if you spend it all.
If you have billions of dollars and buy a $100,000 Porsche that's nothing, it's will hardly affect the interest you get that day. On the other hand if you make $30,000 a year and buy (or worse...lease!) a $30,000 car, that 100% of your income gone in one day, who the dummy? - Dedpoet, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I have read the same thing. Many millionaires are hard-working and self-made, often in the construction business. They would naturally drive trucks. Millionaires and billionaires are completely different animals, imo.
- cbiz, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Funny, I would never ever buy anything from a Hummer owner. Sorry Mike.
- coit, on 10/12/2007, -6/+11How did I know that only an arab prince would top Larry Ellison.
- rotten777, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5@Forma
Yes but it fits him perfectly. - ICSU, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7You mistake modesty for weirdness. Even Scrooge McDuck has a limousine. http://goofy313g.free.fr/calisota_online/cars/scrooge.html
- cheeze69, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5H2 - the cheap and cheezy "hey look at me!" option. I think this is what the rest of the world imagines when they think of a stereotypical "American" (unfortunately).
- rotten777, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5@AceTracer
That's probably one reason you don't have their kind of money. They know how to save and make more money ;) - Spanca, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6That's the $60 million dollar question!
- Portside, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Indeed. Should I ever become a billionaire, I will strive to be just like him.
- senseigmg, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Audi>BMW>Mercedes
- doubledoh, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6@chris9902
No, it's fitting. It would be ironic if he drove the fastest car available.
http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/irony - ICSU, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Is the 1998 Lincoln Continental large enough to throw chairs?
- cadavreexquis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Anyone else notice the Capital One Auto Finance ad? Interesting that the male driver should be wearing a seatbelt but his lady friend is not.
- cuoops, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Glad to see some trucks in there. I heard on the news a few years ago that the number one vehicle for millionaires was a Ford F-150.
- gabeN, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6What kinda car is K-Rose driving?
- Ltgeo, on 10/12/2007, -5/+7MY GOD! Someone needs to tell these guys how to spend money, their choice of cars is terribly boring..But I guess they didn't become rich by wasting money.
- Gizmort, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Dude I drive that same Volvo. My fav is Paul Allen driving around Seattle in a Mazda B-2000 Pick Up!
- alej744, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2NOTHING!! STFU.
- brundlefly76, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Anyone who is suprised by this article should read a book titled 'The Millionaire Next Door' - it is a real eye-opener. The car frugality is actually the norm.
By far most people you see driving brand new expensive cars are over-extenders and not millionaires at all.
Also, most millionaires are local small businessmen, not CEOs, doctors, lawyers, etc. - HappyScrappy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Info is out of date. Warren Buffet sold his Lincoln Town Car and bought a Cadillac DTS.
He did when he invested in GM.
http://www.leftlanenews.com/2006/06/06/warren-buffett-vouches-for-gm-with-caddy-purchase/ - AceTracer, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6These guys have really horrible taste in cars. I was expecting some Bugatti Veyrons, or Ferrari Enzos, or Pagani Zondas. Rich people are boring.
- MoFoKeR, on 10/12/2007, -1/+34 full sized adults fit in the back..im guessing he has that car to throw in his bullion bars and sacks of money
- WolfwoodX, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I would have expected a Maybach somewhere in there.
- mammon, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5For some billionaires people are like paperclips, like that woman from Springdale Arkansas...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2These are registered vehicles in their name. Some collector cars may not be registered. I saw a list like this a year ago and it showed Jay Leno driving only a pick-up truck and a BMW but we all know he has hundreds of cars that he drives around. They must have a way to register cars. Maybe under aliases or under their companies name?
- babakshirazi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2
Yeah, like those billionaires "saved" their way to billionaire status. If you think you can do that, then you are stupid. - Tanbo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i read somewhere that buffett recently bought a new caddie, after watching an interview with the ceo of gm
- HappyScrappy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I dunno. An AMG Merc is very ordinary too. I see 4 a day. I'm not even joking. Some days Jobs' is one of them.
Jobs has an S500, an SL55 and a BMW Z8.
The Z8 is pretty unusual. -
