- LordHelmet, on 03/16/2008, -1/+35All US cities...?
- winmywii, on 03/16/2008, -1/+17I think they neglected that in the title. obviously there are cities around the world that are making great advances, but this is a list of the top U.S. cities.
- nick111, on 03/16/2008, -3/+16Yea - well that's probably symptomatic of the general decline. Yet another article that appears not to realise that the rest of the world not only exists, but in various ways is outflanking the US.
I think it's weird... I mean how long has America been an empire? 50 years? 20 years? Never? How does hubris set in so quickly? - 2drinksbehind, on 03/29/2008, -0/+0Jesus Christ, what is it with the rest of the world and this inferiority complex? Forbes is a U.S. publication, so it's not entirely out of whack for them to focus on the top tech cities in the U.S., not the entire world (such a list would be almost certainly meaningless anyway). Would you be making this big of a fuss if a U.K. publication listed the top 10 tech cities in the U.K.? I doubt it. Is the U.S. in decline? Probably. WTF am I supposed to do about it? Come on message boards and beg forgiveness for where I was born from our "superior" European "friends" that love us so much they never miss an opportunity to try to make us feel like crap about ourselves? Are we an empire? No, we never were an empire. A hegemony maybe, but not an empire. Try using a dictionary sometime.
You people really need to get out more. Americans are not all George W. Bush - not even a majority of us in fact. And the fact that you people lump us all together makes you just as short-sighted and ignorant as the stereotypical American you have in your heads. I'm over reacting to the posts above I know, but I'm just sick of all this anti-American tripe on the internet. Chances are pretty good the country you live in is far from perfect, so why don't you focus your criticism there and let us try to sort out the declining mess that is the U.S., eh?
- neveroffline, on 03/16/2008, -14/+3off topic sorry...Joe Rogan you rock. nuff said but yeah, can I have that isolation tank and free tickets to all your shows (i did sign up)? That last heckler in Ohio and your handling of it was cut short, I wanted to see you pin him into submission (which you know you could have but someone else had the pleasure of doing so). Your work on UFC is also spot on.

- BrandonSh, on 03/16/2008, -0/+3Obviously not if he has a picture of himself with watermarks.

- Viva43, on 03/16/2008, -2/+64Jesus Christ Forbes just list them, I dont wanna read all that...
- andrew522, on 03/16/2008, -2/+45ok here is a list
Columbus, Ohio
Santa Fe, N.M.
Palm Beach County, Fla
Houston, TX
Milwaukee, Wis.
Pittsburgh, Pa
Boise City, Idaho
Iowa City, Iowa
Lake Charles, La.
Yuma, AZ- subliminalurge, on 03/16/2008, -0/+3Interesting to see Iowa City on the list.
Being from Iowa, I would have expected to see Des Moines instead (or possibly even Cedar Falls). Iowa as a whole is definitely taking steps to be an attractive location for tech companies, and from what I've been seeing, Des Moines seems to be going a bit further in that regard than other cities. Makes me wonder why I haven't been hearing more about Iowa City.
- subliminalurge, on 03/16/2008, -0/+3Interesting to see Iowa City on the list.

- TexasShiv, on 03/16/2008, -7/+13Ahhh Columbus, what a thriving hub of technology
*rolls eyes*- winmywii, on 03/16/2008, -0/+5Columbus has a ton of tech related jobs.
- tamurlane6, on 03/16/2008, -0/+10This coming from a guy who diggs the new El Camino.
- SyntraFTW, on 03/16/2008, -0/+4Cause you've totally been there.
- swiftheart, on 03/16/2008, -1/+3It isn't a thriving hub of technology. That's why it's on an "up and coming" list...because the potential is there.
- alterImperson, on 03/16/2008, -3/+6"Where will the next Silicon Valley spring up?"
I have to wonder when the first Silicon Valley 'sprung up'. Typically valleys have a habit of being quite to opposite of 'sprung'. I'm just wondering if I'm the only one who had an issue with that? - CrankyHippo, on 03/16/2008, -2/+5Where will the NEXT silicon vally spring up? Hmm perhaps Silicon Vally? Sorry but it's the Mecca of tech
- drakethegreat, on 03/16/2008, -2/+3They forgot China
- cheezintern, on 03/16/2008, -1/+6no, china just reverse engineers anything we do..

- andrew522, on 03/16/2008, -5/+14Columbus, Ohio
- andrew522, on 03/16/2008, -0/+7yeah I live in Columbus (well, the suburb Westerville) and it's a pretty diverse city. lots of art and culture, but for some reason I wasn't expecting it to be #1 on the list. I have noticed a lot of recent growth in tech (at least internet connectivity) over the last year though -- AT&T selected columbus as one of the first places to get Uverse, and the cable company actually offers a 15mb package now (which I got, compared to last year's 5mb).

3. Palm Beach County, Fla.
4. Houston, Texas
5. Milwaukee, Wis.
6. Pittsburgh, Pa
7. Boise City, Idaho
8. Iowa City, Iowa
9. Lake Charles, La
10. Yuma, Ariz - zoweee, on 03/16/2008, -0/+6Yawn. Every few years articles like this roll around promising that some 5th tier series of podunk burgs in the heartland, bible belt, deep south or mountain west are about to become the new tech/science/nerd/art/culture capital of the U.S. They always ignore the myriad of factors that actually cause such things to happen in favor of hyping some ridiculous short-term trend. This is a prime example of lazy, intellectually dishonest, deadline journalism.
- zephc, on 03/16/2008, -1/+1The bay area has about some of the nicest, most even temperature throughout the year. All these cities listed are too hot or too cold or are Texas.
- swiftheart, on 03/16/2008, -0/+2True. But I've always wondered why that was relevant to the success of Silicon Valley. The stereotype is that the start-ups have people working 70+ hours per week.
What does it matter what the weather is if you're stuck inside working? In fact, the Economist last week noted that entrepreneurs in Brazil stop working when they get enough money, unlike entrepreneurs elsewhere. Why? Maybe it has something to do with the fact that Brazil is so nice not to work in.- zoweee, on 03/16/2008, -0/+1That's a hell of a good question.
- swiftheart, on 03/16/2008, -0/+2True. But I've always wondered why that was relevant to the success of Silicon Valley. The stereotype is that the start-ups have people working 70+ hours per week.

Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
Boise City, Idaho.
Iowa City, Iowa.
Lake Charles, Louisiana.
Yuma, Arizona - Coestar, on 03/16/2008, -1/+5Yuma? Phoenix should be on that list, not Yuma... the essensce of Silicon Valley is already there. They have many Intel campuses, including a $3Bn+ chip fabrication facility, Motorola, Freescale, Analog Rails, (all EDA related companies... what is more Silicon Valley than SILICON?), not to mention Google, GoDaddy, and many notable web startups, and strong RoR communities. Heck, Phoenix ought to be near #1, and it's not even on the list.
- Kallahan, on 03/16/2008, -1/+3What about Grand Rapids, MI.... Oh wait nevermind.
- andrew522, on 03/16/2008, -2/+1(digg down)

- quiggibub, on 03/16/2008, -0/+1I was thinking the same thing. I guess all the hype I keep hearing on the news is just that. Hype.
- megapeg, on 03/16/2008, -0/+1None whatsoever. Seriously.

- NinjaPirateDude, on 03/16/2008, -0/+11Learn how to write a LIST.
it has numbers and paragraphs.......... - somedorkygamer, on 03/16/2008, -0/+2Interesting article, but hard to follow.
- chris8535, on 03/16/2008, -0/+1There will be no "Valley 2", there may be some other place that comes up with a new way to drive the economy, but it will only succeed if its is different than the Valley. No one current area has the development, resources, money, and prestige in one place to compete.
- blackfeathers, on 03/16/2008, -0/+0they should have clarified that the cities are in the u.s. otherwise i'd expect them to list some place in the emirates called dubai... -you know, the new "uber-ultimate manmade land of architectural and material one-up-manship that is currently 'under construction.' "
- Archaia, on 03/16/2008, -0/+1That's random... The economist that wrote the ranking methodology is one of my econ professors for the current semester.
- Magicmasta, on 03/16/2008, -3/+13Buried as inaccurate..
Only US cities - aseever, on 03/16/2008, -1/+1Buried. Even if the article didn't make you work for the list, the "next Silicon Valley" (a retarded premise) is Boston, Seattle, or Austin, with D.C., NYC, L.A., or possibly Atlanta in the wings. This list is as if they threw darts at a map of the USA...
- greatsage, on 03/16/2008, -1/+3Buried for being parochial - who seriously believes the top ten tech cities are all in the US?

cannot even read the content. Good job.
(yaya "One word, ADBLOCK".. n00bs will jump here too) - IMJGalt, on 03/16/2008, -0/+1Hey Forbes, how about a little more column space for the actual content and less for the ads. With adblock on you get a very stark picture
- mehan, on 03/16/2008, -0/+3they failed to realize that there's life outside of U.S.
as soon as the economy goes belly up completely, the flow of foreign scientists to the U.S. will stop, and may even reverse.
and without them, science in this country is *****. just look at any research facility, even the federal ones, more than half of the people working there are foreigners. NIH labs have the highest concentration of asians outside of Chinatown... - nwoantibody, on 03/16/2008, -2/+1US economy is about to collapse, proves how ridiculous Forbes is.
- bdbr, on 03/16/2008, -0/+1A recession isn't a "collapse"
- mos6507, on 03/16/2008, -0/+1No, but recession + peak-oil is.
- bdbr, on 03/16/2008, -0/+1By that definition, the economy collapsed 28 years ago...but it didn't.
- mos6507, on 03/16/2008, -0/+1No, but recession + peak-oil is.
- bdbr, on 03/16/2008, -0/+1A recession isn't a "collapse"
- timbob, on 03/16/2008, -1/+2top three reasons this article sucked massive wart covered donkey balls:
1. first of all it was a list in prose form; digg users are too lazy for most lists, let alone a list that is in fact a block of text.
2. the other thing is the "top ten cities for buggery and sodomy in pictures" widget sucked. if your gonna have an ajax component to your page, the whole point is when you load new information, you don't have to reload the vast majority of the page that stays the ***** same.
3. also there was no boston/cambridge on the list. apparently the human ***** genome isn't a very important contribution to science.- bdbr, on 03/16/2008, -0/+2You think Boston is "up and coming"? I'd say its already there.
- blackbamboo, on 03/16/2008, -0/+0Palm Beach County? The picture was a computer drawing, the place is yet to be built after the county spent 80 million dollars buying land that environmentalist had a judge block building on. Now the crooked politicians moved the building to an area that can not sustain any growth. The county is losing jobs and companies monthly. Office Depot was just bribed with 20 million dollars to keeps it's headquarters there. With this money they just fill the offices with foreign nationals on H1B visas instead of hiring county citizens. GTECH the biggest lottery company in the world laid off 150 people and closed up shop and not a peep from the county. Levenger, Rail America, IBM, Pratt Whitney, Rexall-Sundown, to only name a few have fled the county. The business development board is completely sleeping at the wheel. Illegals have overrun the county using it as a sanitary city, the housing market has crashed dropping prices almost 50% from the peak, most of the county commissioners are under investigation, some are in jail or headed there. Most of the tech jobs are farmed out to body shops that have a lock on the companies because the HR departments are too lazy. The body shops skim 50% off the top of any good contractor. Property taxes are out of control.
- Kratos76, on 03/16/2008, -0/+1Yes Yes, Horrible layout of the article Forbes... All of us just wanted to see if Our city was on the list... that's it.
