- ScienceDoc, on 07/31/2008, -4/+194Norton really does suck.
- typicalusername, on 07/31/2008, -11/+164"You may hate the accent, but they do good work?" *****. I know that half of India is reading this and I'm going to get dugg down... But, every time I've reached an India helpdesk, EVERYTIME they don't understand one ***** word I'm saying and I have to repeat myself multiple times. Outsourcing is the worst damn idea next to prohibition in the 1920's.
- Jobe479, on 07/31/2008, -3/+115Norton is a virus.
- leerayIG88, on 07/31/2008, -7/+102AVG FTW!!
- stouffer67, on 07/31/2008, -2/+9411. All products made by Norton/Symantec suck.
- chickengearge, on 07/31/2008, -1/+93I wouldn't use any Norton product, even if it was free.
- connieLingus, on 07/31/2008, -0/+85who the hell uses norton anymore?
- Rudegar, on 07/31/2008, -1/+651th step of getting a brand computer == remove norton
- inactive, on 07/31/2008, -6/+5611. AVG
12. Avast - Animental, on 07/31/2008, -4/+39Generic praise by the same person again! Nice grouping of words in a logical order!
- inactive, on 07/31/2008, -8/+42Nice opening and good list
- inactive, on 07/31/2008, -7/+391. They only make money off of windows failures, therefore, they don't support the building of a quality OS.
- benroy, on 07/31/2008, -2/+28AVG may be good but NOD32 is hands down the best anti virus. It catches everything, and if it finds something that it doesn't know what to do with, it will submit it to the company for further examination.
- javaroast, on 08/01/2008, -0/+24But that certainly isn't a secret.
- Technohamster, on 07/31/2008, -0/+24Ugh. I finally got my mom to switch to AVG. Her computer went from taking 10 minutes to turn on to taking 1 minute to turn on.
We timed it and everything.
Now if I could just get her to finally try firefox. - centran, on 07/31/2008, -0/+2411. They know that their product is worse than a virus in the way it infects and grabs hold onto your system. This is why if you look on their website there is an additional uninstall program. You use this secret uninstall after the packaged uninstall to completely remove any traces of this horrible program.
- kokoshka, on 07/31/2008, -1/+23First rule of buying a new pc:
reformat. - danomagnum, on 08/01/2008, -0/+22Delete the internet explorer shortcut, install firefox, then change the icon to the blue e... I used to do this in computer labs.
- tacojohn48, on 07/31/2008, -5/+26I work at Target and when we call for authorization on a return we talk to people over in India. They generally do a pretty decent job speaking; it is our phone system that causes the problems with static. I always love when they answer the phone and tell me their name is Bob or Mary.
- centran, on 07/31/2008, -0/+21Don't forget that after you remove norton you need to go to their website to get the true removal program becuase the one they give you doesn't really remove everything.
It was been awhile but I think this is the link to it. Please note it says to remove a failed installation or damaged Norton... every installation of Norton is considered failed and damaged ;)... but no really this should get rid of everything. I don't know why they don't just give you this program instead of their crap ass uninstaller that leaves ***** behind.
http://service1.symantec.com/Support/tsgeninfo.nsf ... - inactive, on 07/31/2008, -0/+20Perhaps in another 10 years or so I might try one of their products again. For the last 10 years they have been bloatware to put it mildly. They install far more services and code than what is needed to accomplish the original desired task. I haven't used windows in a while so not sure I will need it.
As for the outsourcing, fine. With all that money being saved, then you should be able to invest in your company and clean up the mess and dysfunctions that have bee created. I suggest the book "The Five Dysfunctions of a Team". Also, find a few products you want to continue, improve them. Make them rock solid. Do not add any new features to anything until you do this. Stop buying companies. Stop merging code. Quality over quantity, or the customers will see it as a lot of useless bloatware. - inactive, on 07/31/2008, -2/+21Their AV software is *****. Only because it is popular. Why is it popular? Awesome marketing team and bulk license deals to PC manufacturers.
- zarcu, on 07/31/2008, -1/+18Paradox. *head explodes*
- jayfish, on 07/31/2008, -1/+18"6. Customer Support in India is the best thing that has ever happened to Norton/Symantec . They take 1+ million calls a month. Prior to outsourcing, the most calls per month was less than 100k. You may hate the accent, but they do great work."
That doesn't point to great customer service. It points to a crappy product and twice the number of calls to fix it. - chaosblade77, on 08/01/2008, -0/+17Wait, why would you WANT Norton on 9 computers?
- SkippyDoorknob, on 07/31/2008, -0/+16How come the voice changes back and forth between "we" and "they" in the list?
- eldridgea, on 08/01/2008, -3/+181th?
1st. - macross9321, on 07/31/2008, -0/+14HAHA just last week I spent 3 hours removing the virus norton 2006 from a dell. not even their uninstaller tool could get rid of it
was funny how the 2007 norton uninstaller forced me to get the 2008 version to remove the 2006 product - fluffyturtle, on 07/31/2008, -0/+13"6. Too bad half of those calls are repeat callers because the first guy using a predefined question and answer sheet had no idea how to fix your problem.
The first mistake people make when looking at outsourced calls is the *volume*, volume means nothing if problems aren’t getting resolved. - tacojohn48, on 07/31/2008, -1/+14At UTK they try to force us to use McAfee. To use the wifi we have to register our MAC address with the school, and part of the registration process on Windows makes sure you have it installed. I just booted into Linux and registered it that way so I didn't have to install McAfee. I bet somebody could make a good deal of profit helping set people up using a live cd.
- bradleyland, on 08/01/2008, -0/+12You're not far from the truth:
* Has questionable data collection and privacy policies
* Slows your computer down
* Is prone to causing system crashes
* Is chocked full of vulnerabilities - LZeppelinJ0, on 07/31/2008, -1/+13Norton isn't an Anti-Virus it IS the virus. #1 should be removed.
- JFallon126, on 07/31/2008, -2/+13The only time I've used Norton it ***** up my computer worse than any virus ever did.
- Stevelizzle, on 07/31/2008, -0/+11the best Symantec software is the Norton Removal Tool.
- RadiatedAnt, on 07/31/2008, -0/+11and then NOD32 said, let there be light!
and it was good etcetera cetera unto thy holiness forever and ever amen - Paranoidmarvin, on 08/01/2008, -0/+1111. They suck.
Wait, that's not a secret. - mhanley, on 08/01/2008, -0/+11They are still living off the reputation of their famed "Norton Utilities" from years ago. Back in the day, they had the best utility suite around. People still assume they must be good.
- kokoshka, on 08/01/2008, -0/+10oneth?
- sylance, on 08/01/2008, -0/+101th?
1rd. - patm1987, on 07/31/2008, -0/+9I will admit that AVG is nice, but it cries whenever I try to write programs in assembly (in some cases will not allow the assembler to work at all). I personally use Avast for this reason, but my first recommendations are always those two.
- triont, on 07/31/2008, -0/+9Firth?
- DeathfireD, on 07/31/2008, -2/+10It's to bad it's been 4 years and I still haven't received my $30 rebate cash from them.
- schroeder, on 07/31/2008, -0/+8Norton doesn't even work very well. I had restored a laptop for a customer and they insisted I put on their new Norton 360. A couple months later I had to clean it out from infections that Norton saw but could not remove. I've never seen another high profile AV (aside from McAfee) that so consistently finds malware that it cannot remove. The software I use to clean machines always removes what it sees even if the malware repopulates after removal.
- Wakkyweed, on 08/01/2008, -5/+13No, the worst damn idea next to prohibition in the 20's is the drug prohibition we have today.
- tacojohn48, on 07/31/2008, -0/+8I tend to think the major antivirus programs are worse than the viruses they protect us from.
- jack104, on 07/31/2008, -3/+10I used to Work at Microcenter and a big part of my job was selling anti-virus software. I avoided Norton's like the plague. I can't tell you how many people came in looking for anti-virus to replace the Norton's on their system because norton + vista = sooooooo slooooooowwwwwwww. I recommend Eset nod32 anti-virus. It's the lowest system impacting of any anti-virus I've seen, and it's fairly cheap if you buy it online. They've also got a 30 day trial for both versions of their software, give it a try. Now the best anti-virus out there is arguably either Kasperky's or Bit defender, in terms of detection, speed of detection, and user friendliness. There are two FREE anti-viruses that work well too. AVG anti-virus and Avira Anti-vir, both available from download.com, work adequate for those who don't do much risky activity I.E. porn lol.
- aleishman, on 07/31/2008, -1/+8Norton Removal Tool is your friend.
http://service1.symantec.com/Support/tsgeninfo.nsf ... - Yookji, on 08/01/2008, -0/+7A few more for bradleyland's list:
* Is difficult to remove
* Prompts you to subscribe to their service for protection - Neiby, on 08/01/2008, -0/+7Precisely. I do use Avast, but by using Firefox, safe computing practices and a little common sense, I've been completely virus free for years.
