Top 10 Most Pirated Movies and TV Shows of 2007
torrentfreak.com — TV-shows are by far the most popular files on BitTorrent sites. On Mininova alone, some episodes are downloaded more than 2 million times. Movies are a good second, with over 500.000 downloads for the most popular titles.

- n0c0ntr0l, on 01/02/2008, -4/+98Well, to me, it looks like piracy is on the up. I mean 2 million downloads on Heroes, that says a lot about how well the current system is working.
- cwestpha, on 01/02/2008, -8/+31They already use this data in support of ad pricing, judging over seas expansion, and measuring popularity of TV shows and movies.
Here is an idea:
Release no DRM, dvd quality movies and TV shows.
release the TV show for half a dollar the day after it airs. You can even include a short ad or please dont pirate message at the start or end of the program. Using bittorent it would greatly cut down on your distribution costs making most of that profit. And since your releasing it to a global market and not a single country or region, you have a much large market.
For movies make it two bucks for an in theater movie, a buck and a half for a new DVD release, and a dollar for an older movie. Again, your distribution costs are a fraction of the cost of Apple or Amazon and your reaching a larger market.
Your a company, you have a fiduciary responsibility to maximize profits, not screw yourself over but not adapting new technologies and sue potential customers.
Heck if you want more money, do a little website with a few ads as the front end, and you can advertise transcoding applications and get a chunk of the sales of that too. In this case your making more money off of NOT using DRM. Its not hard.
Sure people are going to steal and distribute it, but could it be any worse then it is now? What do you have to lose... (besides more money if you don't do anything).- Bara, on 01/02/2008, -5/+17"You're" or "You are"
- iticu, on 01/02/2008, -1/+2Who want's to bet that if this was introduced they would charge the UK £3 per copy? =-
- Llanowar, on 01/02/2008, -0/+1But would it really maximize profits?
You will have to sell a lot more before you make the same profit. So unless you sell like ten times more I'm not sure if you'd actually make more profit.
- Spelvin, on 01/02/2008, -7/+3This appears to only be torrent activity and possibly only from one site, so all the other torrents and other ways to watch the show online are not even counted. I watched Heroes on NetFlix watch now and it F'In Rocked! How many more people watched it there, or on HULU or originally on iTunes?
- Mononuclear, on 01/02/2008, -0/+10Netflix and iTunes doesn't count as piracy so they wouldn't include those in the numbers even if they did try and include all means of piracy. This is only torrents from one site (although it is one of the most popular sites). I am sure the executives actually use a more comprehensive list of both legal and illegal means.
- makeupgirl015, on 01/02/2008, -4/+1Netflix Watch Instantly does ***** rock! My b/f and I watched the entire first season of Heroes from that, as well as Dead Like Me, and a few other shows.
- momsshizzle, on 01/02/2008, -1/+3I'm your boyfriend's boyfriend.
- kazamx, on 01/02/2008, -1/+20I'm from the UK and love Top Gear, but I am amazed that it is the second most downloaded show. I would have guessed that it was much too much of a British show to prove that popular world wide.
I guess that we need to give props to the three hosts. Between them, they have created a show that every station in the world wishes they had. GZ BBC.
EXTRA: While writing this, I am watching TV, and see that the BBC hare talking about the US election. They are talking about the danger of Huckabee in the election. The BBC are talking about how he could be the worst thing to hit the world since Bush.- arbulus, on 01/02/2008, -1/+13re Huckabee: anyone who thinks gays are a public health threat is a dangerous person. The only public health threat is the threat of infecting people with ideas like that. That man makes me sick.
- Tippis, on 01/02/2008, -1/+7Last I saw any information on the topic, Top Gear had a average "legitimate" (i.e. non-pirate) audience of 250 *million* viewers per episode, world-wide... so it most certainly has an appeal beyond the UK.
- ClunkClunk, on 01/02/2008, -0/+13Speaking as an American, Top Gear is so far beyond our domestic automotive shows it's almost appalling. Our automotive programs tend to either never tread on manufacturer's toes (every car is "great!"), or they're hosted by Jim Bob the Tennessee redneck who showered today because he was "gunna be on the televizzin!"
If they offered TG DVD box sets here in the US, I'd be the first in line to buy them. Instead, I have to pirate it. - innocentsinner, on 01/02/2008, -0/+10Top Gear is ridiculously amazing. I'm not even a 'car guy' in the least and I love the show.
- LemonHerb, on 01/02/2008, -0/+3Personally I put Top Gear up there with The Daily Show and Colbert as the best shows on TV. The hosts are insanely entertaining, even their other shows are great like May's 20th century, Oz and May's wine adventure, and the toys special was good too. Clarkson's documentaries are good, so was the inventions that changed the world series. Hammond isn't as entertaining, Brianiac is like a low rent Mythbusters, but the Grail and when he met Eval were pretty good.
Although, I am in the US and with the writers strike I am looking outside my normal box for new stuff that isn't going to go on some indefinite break because of greedy producers and what not. - boombye, on 01/03/2008, -0/+1It's much too much amazing, the appeal of sexy cars is universal.
- arbulus, on 01/02/2008, -1/+13re Huckabee: anyone who thinks gays are a public health threat is a dangerous person. The only public health threat is the threat of infecting people with ideas like that. That man makes me sick.
- addiktion, on 01/02/2008, -0/+4It just goes to show you that people are likely to go to the movie theater or rent a movie to see it versus pay 36$ dollars to buy 1 season of their favorite tv shows. Maybe if they lowered the price people would be more on the ball.
- solonGFX, on 01/02/2008, -0/+2One of the reasons there are so many downloads of these shows is that they are shown in one country months and months after they first air in another country.
E.G. Heroes. Why should I have to wait months to watch something I could watch now? I shouldn't, so I don't. - DJMajickman, on 01/02/2008, -1/+2What Jericho didn't make the list? I thought it was the least watched and most pirated TV show of the year and that was why they canned it. Guess CBS just doesn't know how to count it's viewers.
- cwestpha, on 01/02/2008, -8/+31They already use this data in support of ad pricing, judging over seas expansion, and measuring popularity of TV shows and movies.
- thomascirca, on 01/02/2008, -5/+144interesting to see that people download TV shows more than movies. maybe digital piracy isn't such a big threat to movie makers after all....
- dagamer34, on 01/02/2008, -6/+23Or maybe it's because it's generally considered "safer" to download a TV show than a movie. The MPAA and RIAA are after us, but TV networks have no such scary organization to fear.
- NathanielJ, on 01/02/2008, -1/+44Or maybe it's because TV shows cost $45+ for a single season, or it's impossible to legally find TV shows if you happen to miss an episode.
I've never had anyone I know personally come after for downloading music or movies, but I know two people personally who have received threats from NBC for downloading their shows.- rpgmaker, on 01/02/2008, -3/+9"but I know two people personally who have received threats from NBC for downloading their shows."
Then you should make a post about it because at this moment there's no precedents for a case like that. I don't believe you.- Mononuclear, on 01/02/2008, -0/+5ISP's forward letters from television networks all the time. I don't know about anyone actually going to court but all the major networks frequently send threats to users to tell them to stop.
- nirav72, on 01/02/2008, -0/+4HBO has been known to send out threats if you downloaded one of their shows. I have heard of people receiving such letters/emails from their ISPs when they've been caught downloading sopranos episodes. Could be because HBO is considered premium content. While NBC, ABC, CBS and Fox is aired for free.
- manova, on 01/02/2008, -0/+5I got a letter through Cox from NBC for downloading an episode of The Office. I was told I have two more strikes before they cut me off. It happens.
- rpgmaker, on 01/02/2008, -1/+1So you're actually telling me that your ISPs hand your data to some television networks? that's only way they could know that you've downloaded some of their shows.
- ryan83189, on 01/02/2008, -0/+2@rpgmaker , they just tell your isp your ip, and to send you a saucy threat letter.
- rpgmaker, on 01/02/2008, -3/+9"but I know two people personally who have received threats from NBC for downloading their shows."
- NathanielJ, on 01/02/2008, -1/+44Or maybe it's because TV shows cost $45+ for a single season, or it's impossible to legally find TV shows if you happen to miss an episode.
- Atomic1fire, on 01/02/2008, -0/+1if tv studios pooled their resources in to something like hulu and allow the users the option of a prepayed cheap download I think they would fair off better
- jmpeagle, on 01/02/2008, -1/+14also, you can legally view many of the TV shows online for free
- TrevorBradley, on 01/02/2008, -0/+10...In America. Many of US network sites block video viewing outside the country.
- isunktheship, on 01/02/2008, -0/+5or maybe because some people still have slow internet, so they'd rather go for a 20min show than possibly a 180 min one, like pirates.
- bdbr, on 01/02/2008, -2/+35I can thing of a few reasons:
1. People don't mind watching a TV show on their PC, but they want to watch movies on the big screen.
2. A series of TV shows is very expensive to buy or even rent. If you don't live in the country where the show is produced, it will be outrageously expensive. Movie rental is relatively cheap.
3. The delays for international release of movies are bad, but for TV shows its often more than a year (or there's no international release at all to many countries).
Networks still see content as territorial, even though the internet makes it no longer the case. If the networks disregard a market, someone will usually step in and fulfill it...in one way or another.- kkkkk, on 01/02/2008, -1/+4Dugg for good logic.
- ccheath, on 01/02/2008, -0/+5don't forget that tv shows have episodes... so less people watch them, but there are more downloads because of episodes
now that's logic
edit: just saw downthread that SystemicAnomaly posted the same reasoning as I did an hour earlier... not sure why other people can't figure it out... kinda simple if you ask me - RobotBuddha, on 01/02/2008, -0/+3"People don't mind watching a TV show on their PC, but they want to watch movies on the big screen. "
I'll nitpick a bit on this one. A lot of people hate watching TV on their computers, but have media centers which can just stream it to their TV. And an increasingly large amount of people prefer their home media center to local theaters, though they're still the minority. - kevyn, on 01/02/2008, -0/+2most people I know now have PCs hooked up to their big screens, and if they don't they can wait till someone releases a DVD version of said film and download and burn to DVD...
I personally love surround sound, so I would never watch a big action film thats in stereo, so always hunt out the full DVD rips
- SillyDigger, on 01/02/2008, -0/+11I'm not paying to download TV shows regardless of the pricing plan.
- SystemicAnomaly, on 01/02/2008, -0/+4or maybe it's because TV shows have multiple episodes and different seasons whereas movies are a one time thing.
- Omicron, on 01/02/2008, -0/+1agreed. if 200,000 people download the 11 episodes from heroes, that's gonna give you over 2 million downloads for Heroes. those same 200,000 are only going to download Transformers once. and that's only counting episodes from this season.
- Koookie, on 01/02/2008, -0/+3I'd like to add that TV episodes suit the busy/lazy/low attention span lifestyle; there is no need to reserve 2 hours of uninterruptible time, but just 25-50 minutes or so.
- dagamer34, on 01/02/2008, -6/+23Or maybe it's because it's generally considered "safer" to download a TV show than a movie. The MPAA and RIAA are after us, but TV networks have no such scary organization to fear.
- Homoomo, on 01/02/2008, -35/+26A little surprised at Knocked Up. I thought it was a terrible movie, but other than that the lists seem pretty accurate.
- poiuytrewq44, on 01/02/2008, -14/+6I'd be willing to bet it was BECAUSE it was such a terrible movie. You don't feel as bad about it if you don't feel adequate effort was put into making the movie a masterpiece.
- TrendyTim, on 01/02/2008, -4/+2I agree, i waited till it was $2 tuesday at the video shop to hire it ... and i didnt care enough to watch it then. The problem isn't just the distribution methods of the studios it is;
Quality, Cost and Distribution Method (in that order for me), if its really good i will pay AU$15 to see it at the cinema, or i will wait till its the discount movie or wait till rental DVD/Discount purchase DVD or even free to air TV depending on the quality. I do not download movies, but TV shows are a real PITA because we have to wait for sometimes years for a show to make it here and when it does its on in a ***** timeslot and its not advertised so no one knows its on then it gets taken off cause no one is watching it.- alexforcefive, on 01/02/2008, -1/+7You can't agree with someone's opinion about a movie if you didn't watch it, jackass.
- TrendyTim, on 01/02/2008, -4/+2I agree, i waited till it was $2 tuesday at the video shop to hire it ... and i didnt care enough to watch it then. The problem isn't just the distribution methods of the studios it is;
- DoTheFandango, on 01/02/2008, -3/+6And TRANSFORMERS is so much better? Jesus Christ.
- Optimaximal, on 01/02/2008, -1/+3Transformers had a built-in fanbase who were pretty much ready to grab it out of the starting gates. That and it had one of those oh-so-pointless staggered releases meaning europe got it about 2 months after the US...
Knocked Up was just another frat pack movie that lacked members of the frat pack... People just downloaded it out of curiosity to see if it was worth seeing in the cinema.
- Optimaximal, on 01/02/2008, -1/+3Transformers had a built-in fanbase who were pretty much ready to grab it out of the starting gates. That and it had one of those oh-so-pointless staggered releases meaning europe got it about 2 months after the US...

- VIPAccess, on 01/02/2008, -17/+197Seems odd The Office didn't make the list, such a good show.
- AMACTASTIC, on 01/02/2008, -15/+7I just finished watching all the episodes of The Office online yesterday.
- frostw, on 01/02/2008, -1/+31Golf clap
- penguinomint, on 01/02/2008, -4/+9I like turtles.
- frostw, on 01/02/2008, -1/+31Golf clap
- ericdano, on 01/02/2008, -32/+6No, it is not. Really. It tries way to hard to be funny. And fails. And this last season really sucked.
- Trav3133, on 01/02/2008, -17/+6The office sucks but Heroes is about 3x worse. Downloaders have bad taste.
- Wartz, on 01/02/2008, -0/+6they just want to oogle at the cheerleader's boobs.
- lukas88, on 01/02/2008, -2/+13The humor in the office is relatively subtle compared to most comedy shows on television. Your comment about it "tries way too hard to be funny" makes me think that you are missing the jokes entirely.
- fergl, on 01/02/2008, -3/+0Actually, he's more sensitive to the subtleties than you are. You're saying "no, no, it's just fine" and he's saying it's way too much.
It's like when someone puts salt in soup. He is saying it's way too salty, but you're saying it's just fine. His tastes are more refined than yours.
- fergl, on 01/02/2008, -3/+0Actually, he's more sensitive to the subtleties than you are. You're saying "no, no, it's just fine" and he's saying it's way too much.
- Jak08, on 01/02/2008, -3/+6Yeah I don't get it everytime I voice my extreme disdain for the Office I receive considerable flack for it. It isn't that I don't like that genre of comedy as I do. Huge fan of colbert btw with his book sitting nicely on my bookcase. But the office seems dry and intelectially deficient.
P.S. don't make fun my misspelling of intelectially.- Trav3133, on 01/02/2008, -4/+3colbert is not funny.
- Jak08, on 01/02/2008, -0/+3Everytime you say Colbert is not funny god kills a kitten. I hope you can live with yourself after just killing snugglepuss
- HonoredMule, on 01/02/2008, -0/+1I kill snugglepuss 3 times a week anyway.
- tech42er, on 01/02/2008, -0/+7Yeah, if you like Colbert, it' not surprising you find the Office dry and unfunny.
- Trav3133, on 01/02/2008, -4/+3colbert is not funny.
- bubba9999, on 01/02/2008, -1/+3To add to Lukas's statement, it also means that you could be mentally retarded in some fashion.
- arbulus, on 01/02/2008, -11/+2The Office didn't need to be remade and Americanized. It was fine the way it was.
- gnslngr1919, on 01/02/2008, -0/+14The US Office is not the same as The UK Office. Get over it.
- Trav3133, on 01/02/2008, -17/+6The office sucks but Heroes is about 3x worse. Downloaders have bad taste.
- dose, on 01/02/2008, -0/+36I thought the same thing but I remembered that NBC offers all of the Office episodes online for free to stream. It's a perfect way to offer content to viewers without having people resort to downloading the show through torrents.
- mcool119, on 01/02/2008, -0/+2And still make money while doing it :D
- ckny, on 01/02/2008, -1/+5People are probably actually buying it on DVD.
- bubba9999, on 01/02/2008, -0/+4I actually bought season 3 twice after I loaned it to a friend 3 months ago and never saw it again.
- JoshuaH, on 01/02/2008, -0/+8I do both.
- bradkovach, on 01/02/2008, -0/+2I torrented all of the Heroes Season 1, and then, since I love the show so much, I bought the DVD. Can't wait for the prematurely ended Season 2 DVDs to come out.
- mistergosh, on 01/02/2008, -3/+5I think that's because the kind of humor in The Office isn't well received by other cultures, while shows like Heroes can have bad-ass scenes almost everywhere in the world.
- Pelapp, on 01/02/2008, -1/+7You mean that an american version, of a british show is too sofisticated for the rest of the world ?
- ccheath, on 01/02/2008, -1/+4yeah... i see what you did there... did you see it too?
- Pelapp, on 01/02/2008, -1/+7You mean that an american version, of a british show is too sofisticated for the rest of the world ?
- gklitt, on 01/02/2008, -4/+5Take cover! The British version vs. USA version debate is probably imminent.
- lazyeyesam, on 01/02/2008, -0/+4Both are excellent (I'm from the UK)
- krz9000, on 01/02/2008, -0/+1dont forget the germany version called "stromberg" . its excellent acting and writing just like the uk and us version. im not sure if there is a subbed version. but the humour is spot on (catches german office-life perfectly)
- BrokenVisage, on 01/02/2008, -2/+1no it's not
- AMACTASTIC, on 01/02/2008, -15/+7I just finished watching all the episodes of The Office online yesterday.
- KevinRoseMustDy, on 01/02/2008, -14/+71I downloaded The Bourne Ultimatum and felt bad for downloading it.
Such a good film.- Chaoticfist, on 01/02/2008, -4/+124I did to. Then i went out and bought all the Bourne movies. If you like it, buy it!!!!!!!!!!!!
- KevinRoseMustDy, on 01/02/2008, -4/+18I agree, sir.
- spidoman, on 01/02/2008, -0/+35I also agree. I was going to just digg up his comment, but then I realized I could make a comment and make this page load even slower.
- Mononuclear, on 01/02/2008, -2/+13I agree with your comment but none of the above ones. I think we should all comment on our agreement or disagreement instead of using those stupid digg up and digg down things in the top right corner. I didn't digg you up or down but I am letting you know that I agree.
- jedi851508, on 01/02/2008, -0/+3I concur with your assessment of the validity of the previous poster's comment. Forthwith, I have verily dugg you up. Good day to you sir, I say, good day.
- HonoredMule, on 01/02/2008, -0/+1I can't top these previous comments. Just wanted to let you know that.
- Jugalator, on 01/02/2008, -0/+1Care to join me over a cup of tea, gentlemen?
- spidoman, on 01/02/2008, -0/+35I also agree. I was going to just digg up his comment, but then I realized I could make a comment and make this page load even slower.
- mca7, on 01/02/2008, -0/+5I wish people would do the same with PC games. Sure, I pirate games, but most games I like, I go and buy them eventually. I can't believe people that pirate a lot of games, but complain about developers not making any good ones. Go support the good games then!
- Insomnya3AM, on 01/02/2008, -0/+1That's why I support good multiplayer - If I pirate a game and I really enjoy the single player, I'll usually go out and buy it to get access to the multiplayer. If the single player just doesn't feel right or isn't at all what you've expected, I've wasted nothing but time.
- KevinRoseMustDy, on 01/02/2008, -4/+18I agree, sir.
- rockstarkate, on 01/02/2008, -19/+40I paid to see it and wished I had downloaded it.
- CaviMike, on 01/02/2008, -11/+3I did and I didn't.
- gerry, on 01/02/2008, -15/+5I downloaded The Bourne Ultimatum and felt bad for downloading it.
Such a bad film. - mictester, on 01/02/2008, -17/+6It's NOT a very good film at all. There's little plot, it's disjointed, and it has to have a shooting, explosion or chase every few minutes to keep the slack-jawed, short attention-span Americans watching. It's everything that's bad with modern cinema.
- boogie606, on 01/02/2008, -1/+2your mama
- bejayel, on 01/02/2008, -0/+4try watching the other two first.
- Outdoor83, on 01/02/2008, -1/+4Right. It's an American's fault for taking pleasure in some things rather than posting on Digg about how other countries suck. I'd say that you were a racist, but you're accusing Americans of being entertained where you are not. Looks like the problem's with you.
- boombye, on 01/03/2008, -0/+1Yeah I'm not entirely sure that the crew that worked on the movie was comprised of all Americans either... In fact a lot of ***** movies we get are from British directors or film crews but we don't complain about their country and it's depressing dark rainy cold ***** look.
- boombye, on 01/03/2008, -0/+1Oh please my favorite shows are Lost and Battlestar Galactica and he says Americans have a short attention span....Try watching Lost with a short attention span.
- jeuhrn, on 01/02/2008, -0/+5How freaking right you are, good sir, and at the same time, what a scary handle you're using.
I saw the Bourne Ultimatum on the worlds biggest THX-cinema here in Oslo ;D and I can tell you the goosebumps didn't retreat until it was released on HD-DVD. What a mancrush a guy can have on Matt Damon after seeing him whoop an entire room of CIA spooks in 0.43 seconds.
- Chaoticfist, on 01/02/2008, -4/+124I did to. Then i went out and bought all the Bourne movies. If you like it, buy it!!!!!!!!!!!!
- Schneckehaus, on 01/02/2008, -3/+18Hah, well I think the market will naturally adapt to this not-so-new trend in time.
Change is a good thing, It's fascinating to watch these lumbering giants attempt to cope with the lighting paced world of technology that has engulfed and metamorphised their market into something totally alien.
It's probably something like a Christian parent having a kid who eventually converts to Buddhism, haha.- gpageau, on 01/02/2008, -4/+15Or a Digg user who eventually converts to Christianity.
- MacEnvy, on 01/02/2008, -13/+9False. That would not be considered "progress".
- fergl, on 01/02/2008, -1/+1Change is indeed good. Outsourcing of jobs; monitoring email and phones. Warrantless no-knock searches. Tasing. Waterboarding. Teens being classed as sex offenders for the rest of their lives for consensual sex. Eminent domain, having your home stolen from you after you've worked your whole life to pay for it. Voting machines that were gamed. Oil going from $65/bbl to $110/bbl. Our country going from a massive surplus to a massive massive debt. The dollar being abandoned globally.
Stop me when I get to the parts where change is a -bad- thing, ok? Because change is a good thing.- Schneckehaus, on 01/06/2008, -0/+1Well, if they changed, they would be, wouldn't they?
Also, good is relative. I bet someone thinks those are good.
- Schneckehaus, on 01/06/2008, -0/+1Well, if they changed, they would be, wouldn't they?
- gpageau, on 01/02/2008, -4/+15Or a Digg user who eventually converts to Christianity.
- CountryTime, on 01/02/2008, -9/+21i'd figure that one of the top movies would be a porno
- Link459, on 01/02/2008, -5/+41) Big Breasted Asians 11.

- GeneralFailure0, on 01/02/2008, -0/+17There's just too much porn. All the downloads are distributed among a huge selection of titles and not one porno is able to rack up enough downloads to be noticed in these top 10 lists.
- chungmaster, on 01/02/2008, -4/+1Pirates? So many of my friends downloaded that film. One of my friends even downloaded it twice after his sister found it on his computer and deleted it. Hope he doesn't get caught again.

Luckily, the companies involved realise that fansubs HELP sales of their products when they are eventually licensed in country as it generates a built-in market as true fans buy to support - as a thank you, genuine subbers stop their work once the series is licensed.
Unfortunately, most dubs are done on a shoestring budget by the same 2-3 groups who express as much emotion and attachment to their work as a concrete donkey. That and Manga/ADV take 99% of the profit... Nobody likes Manga or ADV. As a result, fans snub the crappy dubs and continue downloading the subbed version from the shady subbers who jeopardise the entire fansub genre.
It's a strange & vicious circle...- Lythium, on 01/02/2008, -0/+2Many people prefer subtitles to dubbing, period. Even if it's done by a high-end, "official" cast, dubbing is frequently obnoxious. Anime in particular tends to have exaggerated pathos in the text to compensate for the more deadpan nature of (for example) the Japanese language. It works out okay if you read the words while hearing, in the original language, the emotions behind them.
English is naturally more expressive in and of itself, so when you combine the added pathos in the text with the vocal tendencies of English-speakers, the result comes off as over-the-top and hokey. The only way to make dubs work is to re-tool the text entirely (as was done with Princess Mononoke, though I suppose Neil Gaiman's involvement in the project also helped). Most studios don't do this, opting instead for a straight translation. The result is piteous. - boombye, on 01/03/2008, -0/+1Well not to mention every character in an Anime dubs sounds like some white surfer dude just waiting to yell out cowabunga, and the female voice actors sound so annoying that it seems their only friends in life will be cats.

- EXreaction, on 01/02/2008, -0/+5Ok, I'd have to say there can't be too many people who watch more anime than I do, but I don't think it is possible for an anime movie to be in the top downloaded movies, even if they are a billion times better than the ***** coming out of any other movie studio.
Go ask everyone in the US what anime is, 95% would probably say something about kids cartoons, or some kind of porn.- bagboyrebel, on 01/02/2008, -0/+8well besides a few movies, most of th anime that gets aired in the US is intended for kids.
- Onyxblaze, on 01/02/2008, -1/+2It may be aired for kids... but it can have some pretty adult themes
- Lythium, on 01/02/2008, -0/+1....many of which are cut out to appease conservative audiences.
- boombye, on 01/03/2008, -0/+1I woke up early one morning, turned on the television and KidsWB was on, and it was showing some Anime which I'm sitting here trying to think of the name of for a minute and I can't, but regardless, this show had the most sexual innuendo I've ever seen on a Saturday morning.

- Anonymously, on 01/02/2008, -2/+81I find it amazing (and am very glad to see) that a BBC car show, Top Gear, is the second most popular television program. It's a fantastic show. I hope the BBC appreciates what it has on its hands.
- tmbrwolf19, on 01/02/2008, -0/+38I think that ranking has a lot to do with the abroad fan base of Top Gear. There are lots of fans in North America for example, where the show isn't available on any channel. This leaves downloading as the only option. I for one, know that this is the situation I find myself in. I am pretty certain if a American or Canadian network picked up the show, you would see a huge drop in the download rate.
- Catbert107, on 01/02/2008, -2/+3I get it on BBC America
- imac12, on 01/02/2008, -1/+8Sure, you get last seasons episodes in standard definition...
Or I can download HD versions on mininova. - mooninite, on 01/02/2008, -0/+4The show is not shot in HD. Only 480i (or 576i to be exact). It's a shame it isn't shot in HD.
Another thing, BBC America's version is commercial filled and 20 minutes *shorter* because of it. You miss out on some stuff. The real TG episodes are a full hour long.
- imac12, on 01/02/2008, -1/+8Sure, you get last seasons episodes in standard definition...
- Catbert107, on 01/02/2008, -2/+3I get it on BBC America
- imac12, on 01/02/2008, -0/+15Maybe if BBC America or another US station would get their act together and show the current season, we wouldn't have to resort to downloading it.
I'm one of those people that wait for the torrents to pop up Sunday nights so I can catch the latest episode. I can't get enough of this show.- vypergts, on 01/02/2008, -2/+1I don't know what you've been watching but I've caught a couple of the current season episodes on BBC America recently. That and watching Kitchen Nightmares with the swearing is awesome.
- thebairyhum, on 01/02/2008, -0/+3I also snag the latest episode on Sundays. I can't understand why the BBC would air billiards or whatever over Top Gear those couple of weeks. Is billiards that big in the UK?
- thomashauk, on 01/02/2008, -0/+1Not one bit.
I think its just the head of BBC 2 is a snooker fan... - kazamx, on 01/02/2008, -1/+2Pool (what we call billiards) was VERY VERY popular in the past in the UK. Today not so much, but it still gets good viewing figures. there are a few players such as O'Sulivan that everyone likes. On the whole though, students tend to be the biggest fans. Darts is also popular. When I say popular, I don't mean people going crazy and street parties, but enough people watch on TV to mke the paper devote a column or two.
- HenvY, on 01/02/2008, -0/+2When Clarkson said billiards, he's joking, it's snooker because the world championships were on. I don't know what Kazam is on about but billiards is a completely seperate entity from pool, no pool is televised terrestrially in the UK and O'Sullivan is a snooker player.
- baldgye, on 01/02/2008, -0/+1lol, its snooker, and no, no its not
- neocr0n, on 01/02/2008, -0/+1Despite what people think it actually gets good viewing figures. It can pull in numbers of 8million in the UK quite regular and has been seen as high as 10million. It terms of viewing figures in the UK its second only to football. It's also getting quite big in Germany, Belgium & Holland. Over 300 million Chinese tuned in to watch the 2006 Star Dragon Woods Villa Cup China Open.
Anyway it has nothing to do with the games viewing figures compared to Top Gears. Its more about the BBC being public funded and therefore obligated to screen a wide variety of sports and shows.
- thomashauk, on 01/02/2008, -0/+1Not one bit.
- bdbr, on 01/02/2008, -0/+7It probably has a lot to do with BBC America only being in the more expensive cable packages.
- aflaks, on 01/02/2008, -0/+3they have quarter billion viewers world wide, i'm surprised they are #2
- ours, on 01/02/2008, -0/+1Not in the list but I highly recommend "Spooks" from the BBC as well. The last (6th) season was somewhat of a mixed bag but the 1-5 are awesome. Smart witting and more credible approach to spy-drama then say "24".
- IndigoMoss, on 01/02/2008, -0/+1Is that the SAS show?
- ZigVicious, on 01/02/2008, -0/+2yeah.

- boombye, on 01/03/2008, -0/+1My only complaint about BBC is they need to give the Doctor a better budget, and stop wasting ***** on stuff like Footballers Wives.. I've been embarrassed to show a few episodes to my friends because they were too ridiculous in storyline and special effects, like a bad home movie.
- Norinaway, on 07/12/2008, -0/+0Footballers Wives was made by another company and is cancelled! Furthermore in Britian it was actually broadcasted on another channel, BBC in america only had permission to broadcast in america obviosuly and anywhere else it was seen on BBC channels outside UK. I agree with you the program is utter rubbish, I managed to sit through half a season and got bored. However, I don't agree with you about Doctor Who. In Britain it is the best TV we have and obviously you enjoyed it enough to show it to your friends. You have to understand that Doctor Who was made in the 70's and so alot of the story lines originate from that time.
- tmbrwolf19, on 01/02/2008, -0/+38I think that ranking has a lot to do with the abroad fan base of Top Gear. - Blackthorne, on 01/02/2008, -4/+27I watched the entire first season of Heroes for free on the network's website. Not sure what else they would have to do to satisfy the linked websites' plea to "embrace technology". Maybe they should deliver the entire DVD set to the poster's door in a wrapped christmas box, perhaps with a nice moist cake?
- morgrar, on 01/02/2008, -0/+8People would still download it so they can stream it across their media centers and various devices, instead of having to do all the ripping ;)
- ianzu, on 01/02/2008, -1/+11They could start by paying the writers. That would rock.
- ckny, on 01/02/2008, -0/+14I don't want to watch it on NBC's website with my girlfriend and I huddled over the laptop. I want to be able to stream it on my equipment and watch it on the big screen.
- vdgmr1213, on 01/02/2008, -11/+5The cake is a lie.
- bdbr, on 01/02/2008, -0/+3I've watched several episodes streamed from NBC. The quality wasn't always great, but the new download thing works great. All the Linux & Mac users won't be able to watch it that way, though.
- Uranium118, on 01/02/2008, -0/+4I don't thing they offer it in 720p or 1080p quality like some torrent sites do.
- Stavrosian, on 01/02/2008, -0/+7International viewers generally can't use the services offered officially unless they have a good proxy, torrents are the only way for them.
- tyywebb, on 01/02/2008, -0/+5Just moist or moist and delicious?
- shaun1018, on 01/02/2008, -0/+5They need to deliver this stuff as a video podcast. I wouldn't mind a few commercials then.
- gingerchris, on 01/02/2008, -0/+5Make it available to people outside of the US. I understand that this is complicated due to syndication rights/money, but get the shows to other countries quicker so we don't have to wait for months to see something new
- rstarr, on 01/02/2008, -1/+63If they could just throw out the episodes on BT now with commercial breaks in them and make it legal I honestly would do it. That way we get it free, legal, easy, and fast. They could set up a small network of dedicated seeders to start off fast and then keep the catalog online until the DVD release. I just don't understand how an adevertiser would rather pay for a Heroes ad spot that only airs on it's first run and not on every single run it will have (sans DVD release). It just makes too much sense I guess.
- BigBallistix, on 01/02/2008, -4/+5Commercial breaks? And we're going to just put up with them out of goodwill? What's to stop us skipping them?
- bdbr, on 01/02/2008, -0/+16What's to stop you from skipping them now? There's an entire DVR industry built around that.
- ttamshadbolt, on 01/02/2008, -1/+1commercials aren't that bad... especially if you decide what you watch, when you want.
- lolwutpear, on 01/02/2008, -0/+4If that was my ONLY option, I guess i would do it. It's better than streaming from their website and they know damn well I'd never pay for a DVD. But currently, if I miss the broadcast, I'm going to keep going straight to my commercial free torrents.
- IndigoMoss, on 01/02/2008, -0/+1Your idea would be kick ass. It'd be even more kickass if they'd release all of the old shows in the same way. I just the ***** Wonder Years Boxset already!
- paisleyplace, on 08/20/2008, -0/+0I know what you mean. There's some old program series I'd like to get my hands on that simply do NOT exist out there except in pirated form or from someone's private collection from way back in the early early vhs days. I want my youngest watch the old Hardy Boys series that used to come on TV. I think if she watched the show, then perhaps the book series would interest her too. At least it would get her out of anime crap for a little while now and again...
- BigBallistix, on 01/02/2008, -4/+5Commercial breaks? And we're going to just put up with them out of goodwill? What's to stop us skipping them?

- lukas88, on 01/02/2008, -0/+5It probably didn't have time to get downloaded as much, as you can see, most of the movies on the list are from the first and second quarters.
- tidu, on 01/02/2008, -0/+5dvd came out in december... had i come out earlier it would probably be on that list

- Happytired, on 01/02/2008, -0/+22I find it interesting that the movies and shows listed were very successful in ratings and box office. It shows that a good product will succeed regardless of piracy. Crap is crap.
- timusca, on 01/02/2008, -0/+1That doesn't show anything except that advertising works, regardless of the viewing portal.

- Bahimiron, on 01/02/2008, -4/+12I tend to DL shows that I miss for whatever reason.
I no longer DL shows that show on NBC, ABC or CBS. Why?
NBC, ABC and CBS allow me to go to their website and see recent episodes of their show. Fox does too, but they hang on to it for like a week before releasing it. Idiots. The CW? Not much of a network, but *****, a man's gotta get his Supernatural. - latrosicarius, on 01/02/2008, -0/+53I justify it to myself -- not that the courts would care... I do pay for the cable TV where all these shows are shown for free anyway. BitTorrent is just my form of TiVo.... so deal with it MPAA.
- Protoss, on 01/02/2008, -0/+5Thats my justification too. If I have class during the show or just don't watch it for one reason or another that week, I download that episode, yet still tune in next week and sit through their ads.
- chrispr, on 01/02/2008, -3/+3The problem lies with using bittorrent to download the episode. If you upload, then you're technically distributing it to others. It's illegal to distribute TV episodes, unless you're an authorized distributor.
- Flame500, on 01/02/2008, -0/+3then stage6 is a nice solution no u/l required
- timusca, on 01/02/2008, -0/+1You can justify it all you want, but you're still not sitting through the advertisements that support the show in the first place. Then again, why aren't DVR's attacked by the MPAA?
- rivalius13, on 01/02/2008, -0/+105I only downloaded one of the movies and none of those shows. I'm a failure!!! *throws eyepatch on the ground and runs off crying*

- Jonttu, on 01/02/2008, -1/+1"Availability" in terms excluding the matter of "Price". I think availability includes cost. Besides, for companies actually willing/making their media available, a little too late ehh? Torrentz FTW!
- bluemist, on 01/02/2008, -0/+8Despite rampant piracy, the movie industry achieved the highest gross in history last year (2007), in terms of pure raw dollars. DVD sales are breaking records too.
- coolboy0286, on 01/02/2008, -12/+4Buried for inaccuracy of title/information. This list doesn't account the downloads of other trackers and sites, including private and internals.
- lolwutpear, on 01/02/2008, -0/+4FTA: "The data used for these lists is provided by Mininova and considered to be a representative sample." - It is one of the most popular BitTorrent sites in existence, after all.
However in terms of total download numbers, I think we can all agree that only looking at one site gives us an incomplete picture of what's going on.

- aurorion, on 01/02/2008, -1/+2I don't thing the problem is that DHW is a women's thing. I think DHW is too much of a grown-up thing. Not really targeted at the digg age group. What's interesting about a show about the lives of 40-year olds in a small town??
That said, I love the show. And I am not a woman, and I am not in my 40s. (No offense to women or people in their 40s.) - IndigoMoss, on 01/02/2008, -2/+1When I used to skate all the time, a dude in our group would head out from the skatepark early to watch it. We used to rip him pretty hard. Seriously, a 18 year old skater punk watching that show is kind of *****.

- DanInAUSTRALIA, on 01/02/2008, -0/+2this just shows that piracy cant be stopped but instead should be seen as a wake up call to the industries to change the way they are doing things because its clearly not working.
- jmpeagle, on 01/02/2008, -0/+3this is just going to lead to massive product placement within shows. Basically TV and commercial will merge more than have already.
- buckrogers1965, on 01/02/2008, -0/+2They could also put a single high quality funny or informative commercial at the start of each episode and provide a single high speed seeder for others to download the episode from. That way they can change the commercial at the front on a weekly basis. Auction off the time to advertisers.
These leaders could be movie trailers, and maybe throw in a short ad for other similar shows on the network.

That way they can change the commercial at the front on a weekly basis. Auction off the time to advertisers.
- jmpeagle, on 01/02/2008, -0/+3this is just going to lead to massive product placement within shows. Basically TV and commercial will merge more than have already.
- SiNN4R, on 01/02/2008, -14/+7Transformers? Shooter? People who use bit torrent have awful taste.
- F3nwick, on 01/02/2008, -1/+3kind of have to watch the movie first before having an opinion...
- Mononuclear, on 01/02/2008, -3/+2Many people only download the movies they don't think are good enough to see in the theater.
- solidus636, on 01/02/2008, -1/+1I download movies because I'm poor...
- anchorman, on 01/02/2008, -5/+11I can't believe The Office is not in the top ten. Come on guys.... get crackin'.
- TurboBeard, on 01/02/2008, -0/+4It's free on NBC.com...
- Malchus89, on 01/02/2008, -1/+3The Office is too good to pirate...it's in the CODE!
- Vector713, on 01/02/2008, -1/+1Heh, I didn't think Desperate Housewives would be on the list... They really need to give into the writers' demands so the strike can end and I can get my weekly dose again... :(
- GokuSoul, on 01/02/2008, -7/+0No Sherk and no Office?!
- BigBallistix, on 01/02/2008, -0/+6In Australia, we're supposed to get our Heroes fix a week after the Americans (that's why their webisodes are a week late). Even though its only 6 days by the time its uploaded, I say **** it. If they don't get with the times and show these things simultaneously around the world, they can bloody-well put up with piracy. WE LOVE YOU MININOVA
- Gizza, on 01/02/2008, -1/+4At least its an improvement on getting it 18 months late like most other shows. I mean, the other day I saw an ad for "all new That 70s' Show" and I'm sure the shorts were from like season 6 or something.
This is the reason Australia is the largest user of Bittorrent in the world. It's hard to feel guilty about downloading a show that doesn't actually have a legal way of getting it.- lcarsdeveloper, on 01/02/2008, -0/+3No no no! You should do the legal thing, switch off the internet entirely so you don't see any spoilers (very difficult when you're a member of the fansite) and wait a year or two to watch it with commercials, during a timeslot that will change 3-4 times during the course of the season, and will most likely have old and new episodes mixed together **cough**Channel Ten**cough**. Ah screw it, torrent away!

- merdiesel, on 01/02/2008, -14/+10I will never understand why people liked Knocked Up. What a piece of ***** film that was.
- 5wallace, on 01/02/2008, -0/+1You sir, are retarded.
- xdvx, on 01/02/2008, -6/+5I am watching 5/10 TV shows from list. But really hard to believe that Battlestar Galactica is higher than Lost and PB.
- Protoss, on 01/02/2008, -0/+6BSG runs on SciFi, and at least at my dorm, we don't get that channel for some odd reason, so that may be why.
- marker80, on 01/02/2008, -2/+5Maybe just because it's much better then Lost and PB?
- aurorion, on 01/02/2008, -1/+3Nothing's better than LOST. ;)
- vermax, on 01/02/2008, -2/+1LOST is a joke, what a contrived pile of spiralling *****. BSG is brilliant.
- aurorion, on 01/02/2008, -1/+3Nothing's better than LOST. ;)
- MeNorski, on 01/02/2008, -0/+2Battlestar Galactica is the best series on Television IMHO. The story is very well written, and very engrossing. You forget your watching a sci-fi television series because the story line is deals with emotions, and character flaws we can relate too. This show isnt your typical Star Trek sci-fi by any means. This is a show that doesnt know its sci-fi. When did Picard, and Will Riker ever do something wrong like real humans? You dont need to be a sci-fi fan to enjoy this show.
- nmcvicke, on 01/02/2008, -6/+2Wow, so this shows that people who pirate things have no taste
- ohhoe, on 01/02/2008, -7/+8Save the Cheerleader, Save the World!
- Malchus89, on 01/02/2008, -1/+4By logic...
Screw the World....Screw the Cheerleader!
- Malchus89, on 01/02/2008, -1/+4By logic...
- Simtech, on 01/02/2008, -0/+2I only download TV shows that my PVR doesn't catch. Because of bad program info by Bell. I figured that I have paid for them and deserve to watch them. Download movies mecilessly.
- Haiz, on 01/02/2008, -5/+11***** the RIAA!
- lukas88, on 01/02/2008, -0/+10Do you mean the MPAA?
- overkilpro, on 01/02/2008, -2/+3both
- Jugalator, on 01/02/2008, -0/+1***** them all. ALL OF THEM!!!
- lukas88, on 01/02/2008, -0/+10Do you mean the MPAA?
- noizeuk, on 01/02/2008, -1/+8I think i have a right to download my BBC programs, I pay for them so why cant i watch them at my own will? TOP GEAR FTW.
- fandyboy, on 01/02/2008, -1/+0You know you can use the BBCs iPlayer?
- digitallysick, on 01/02/2008, -3/+1So if someone created a decent pay for download service with no DRM people might actually use it? what an amazing business model idea ...
- iupetre, on 01/02/2008, -1/+7No one mentioned Doctor Who? Because the BBC releases it late in the US, that's how a lot of people watch it.
- lcarsdeveloper, on 01/02/2008, -0/+2I think from now on I'll be torrenting that show. Last season I accidentally saw a page on Wikipedia that said "the Master". The whole season was spoiled! Well I exaggerate, but the internet is designed for everyone to see everything at the same time, and if you're a true fan of the show you'll usually try to get the DVDs anyway. I've downloaded every Stargate episode for the last 3 years, but I also have every DVD that's been released. It's better quality, it's got extra features and commentaries, and it's supporting the talented people who make the series. Why should I have to stay up until 12:30am to watch it with commercials, 6 months after the season ended?
- Link459, on 01/02/2008, -2/+11Wait wait wait wait wait
Desperate Housewives was downloaded more than 24?
What the hell...- ours, on 01/02/2008, -0/+4I don't watch Desperate but last time I watched 24, it was going ape ***** in terms of script.
Damn thing turned from cool to nice to bloody ridiculous. It had it's time so I'm not surprised some other shows are casting shadows on this once "star" show.
Repeating the same terrorist plots will only bring it so far.
- ours, on 01/02/2008, -0/+4I don't watch Desperate but last time I watched 24, it was going ape ***** in terms of script.
- isunktheship, on 01/02/2008, -5/+1It would be interesting to see how much money is actually being lost here.
570k dls for transformers, I know I wouldn't buy that Michael Bay piece of crap, but I'd dl it... even if only half of those people would normally buy it, and a DVD is roughly $20, that's still 5 million bucks gone!- sloonark, on 01/02/2008, -0/+4There's no way that half of the downloaders would otherwise purchase the movie. I'd guess less than 5%.
- hitokiri808, on 01/02/2008, -0/+0I think most people that download crappy movies have no intention of buying it, and if they were unable to download it, they still wouldn't buy it.
- undy242, on 01/02/2008, -2/+2I'm surprised American Gangster isn't on there. That leaked way before it came out in the theaters and I saw a TON of people downloading it pre-release.
- sponeil, on 01/02/2008, -13/+6I would have to say that anyone who downloaded Heroes illegally should be fined for being a dumbass.
1) NBC makes it free at nbc.com, with commercial breaks so short that it's even better than watching it taped on Tivo.
2) The video isn't DVD quality, but it's better than I get on my TV.
3) I don't have to wait for the download to finish to watch it. I can start watching it instantly.
4) Pauses while viewing have been very rare for me.
5) It was not easy, or cheap, for NBC to set this up.
So NBC goes to such great lengths to make every episode available to almost anyone anytime (not sure about international), and it's still the most pirated show? You just killed any plausible argument that ANYONE EVER MADE about why people download pirated shows (i.e. broadcasting companies being unreasonable). You just told them "I don't care how much of an effort you make to please me, I'm going to steal it anyway because I can." If I'm ever serving on a jury for one of you, you're screwed.- Phlosten, on 01/02/2008, -0/+5Maybe free for you, but not outside of the US afaik.
- Gizza, on 01/02/2008, -1/+7OK, here's a few rebuttals:
1) Not available outside of US (well at least not here in Australia, and as you can see here http://www.digg.com/tech_news/Top_10_Most_Pirated_ ... Australia is the largest user of Mininova in the world)
2) 720p downloads
3) Even on Australias crappy internet I can get an episode of heroes in 720p in about 15mins. I can find something else to do for 15mins.
4) Obviously no pauses once you have it on your comp. Can also stream to a media extender and watch it on my TV rather than computer monitor. - packman86, on 01/02/2008, -0/+4Torrent download is a must when you live outside the US. Everything else is blocked. NBC.com / iTunes(movies) for example..
Content should be avalible to everyone. Not just the US.
- fani, on 01/02/2008, -6/+1Desperate housewives ?
- Schmapdi, on 01/02/2008, -0/+8Hmm, I'm not a big movie downloader, but I will download TV shows that I've missed out on. For instance a few years back I didn't watch any of the first season of Arrested Development. Then I caught a rerun of it during the summer or something - so I d/l'd the entire first season and loved it. Not only did I watch seasons 2 & 3 (like doubling it's audience) but I bought the DVD's too.
Thanks Piracy! And Fox owes you a big thank you too!- djAnakin, on 01/02/2008, -0/+1Same thing for me and The Office.
- Sabretou, on 01/02/2008, -6/+15Thank God so many people didn't pay for Transformers.
- Ymeg, on 01/02/2008, -8/+0Ya, that movie must have sucked... I mean that's the justification for the pirates, right?
- 4Paws, on 01/02/2008, -2/+11Transformers was so ***** stupid.
- Ymeg, on 01/02/2008, -4/+0Heh, I was going on pure assumption... I've actually never seen it. :D
- 4Paws, on 01/02/2008, -2/+11Transformers was so ***** stupid.
- Krpano, on 01/02/2008, -4/+1Transformers wasnt that bad, actually i really liked...not a great screenplay, but the action and that hot girl did the job for me......there is much worse movies out there.
- undy242, on 01/02/2008, -0/+3No one is arguing that there are worse movies. But Transformers was pretty disappointing.
- Ymeg, on 01/02/2008, -8/+0Ya, that movie must have sucked... I mean that's the justification for the pirates, right?
- someone173406, on 01/02/2008, -1/+8~300k copies for 300. Nice.
- Phlosten, on 01/02/2008, -0/+1And don't forget those that download and pass onto friends. I would probably double or triple that number for people who end up watching the torrented movies/tv shows.
