- VIPAccess, on 01/02/2008, -17/+196Seems odd The Office didn't make the list, such a good show.
- thomascirca, on 01/02/2008, -5/+144interesting to see that people download TV shows more than movies. maybe digital piracy isn't such a big threat to movie makers after all....
- Mononuclear, on 01/02/2008, -6/+129Is digg going to be full of "TOP 10 *** of 2007" lists for the next month?
- Chaoticfist, on 01/02/2008, -4/+124I did to. Then i went out and bought all the Bourne movies. If you like it, buy it!!!!!!!!!!!!
- rivalius13, on 01/02/2008, -0/+105I only downloaded one of the movies and none of those shows. I'm a failure!!! *throws eyepatch on the ground and runs off crying*
- n0c0ntr0l, on 01/02/2008, -4/+98Well, to me, it looks like piracy is on the up. I mean 2 million downloads on Heroes, that says a lot about how well the current system is working.
- Anonymously, on 01/02/2008, -2/+81I find it amazing (and am very glad to see) that a BBC car show, Top Gear, is the second most popular television program. It's a fantastic show. I hope the BBC appreciates what it has on its hands.
- rstarr, on 01/02/2008, -1/+63If they could just throw out the episodes on BT now with commercial breaks in them and make it legal I honestly would do it. That way we get it free, legal, easy, and fast. They could set up a small network of dedicated seeders to start off fast and then keep the catalog online until the DVD release. I just don't understand how an adevertiser would rather pay for a Heroes ad spot that only airs on it's first run and not on every single run it will have (sans DVD release). It just makes too much sense I guess.
- KevinRoseMustDy, on 01/02/2008, -14/+71I downloaded The Bourne Ultimatum and felt bad for downloading it.
Such a good film. - latrosicarius, on 01/02/2008, -0/+53I justify it to myself -- not that the courts would care... I do pay for the cable TV where all these shows are shown for free anyway. BitTorrent is just my form of TiVo.... so deal with it MPAA.
- dealseeker, on 01/02/2008, -0/+45Don't be so hard on yarrself.
- NathanielJ, on 01/02/2008, -1/+44Or maybe it's because TV shows cost $45+ for a single season, or it's impossible to legally find TV shows if you happen to miss an episode.
I've never had anyone I know personally come after for downloading music or movies, but I know two people personally who have received threats from NBC for downloading their shows. - Porch, on 01/02/2008, -1/+41TOP GEAR!!!!!
- tmbrwolf19, on 01/02/2008, -0/+38I think that ranking has a lot to do with the abroad fan base of Top Gear. There are lots of fans in North America for example, where the show isn't available on any channel. This leaves downloading as the only option. I for one, know that this is the situation I find myself in. I am pretty certain if a American or Canadian network picked up the show, you would see a huge drop in the download rate.
- dose, on 01/02/2008, -0/+36I thought the same thing but I remembered that NBC offers all of the Office episodes online for free to stream. It's a perfect way to offer content to viewers without having people resort to downloading the show through torrents.
- spidoman, on 01/02/2008, -0/+35I also agree. I was going to just digg up his comment, but then I realized I could make a comment and make this page load even slower.
- KLowD9x, on 01/02/2008, -5/+38Scrubs was beat by Desperate Housewives!?
What kind of fruits are downloading from mininova? - bdbr, on 01/02/2008, -2/+35I can thing of a few reasons:
1. People don't mind watching a TV show on their PC, but they want to watch movies on the big screen.
2. A series of TV shows is very expensive to buy or even rent. If you don't live in the country where the show is produced, it will be outrageously expensive. Movie rental is relatively cheap.
3. The delays for international release of movies are bad, but for TV shows its often more than a year (or there's no international release at all to many countries).
Networks still see content as territorial, even though the internet makes it no longer the case. If the networks disregard a market, someone will usually step in and fulfill it...in one way or another. - frostw, on 01/02/2008, -1/+31Golf clap
- Blackthorne, on 01/02/2008, -4/+27I watched the entire first season of Heroes for free on the network's website. Not sure what else they would have to do to satisfy the linked websites' plea to "embrace technology". Maybe they should deliver the entire DVD set to the poster's door in a wrapped christmas box, perhaps with a nice moist cake?
- cwestpha, on 01/02/2008, -8/+31They already use this data in support of ad pricing, judging over seas expansion, and measuring popularity of TV shows and movies.
Here is an idea:
Release no DRM, dvd quality movies and TV shows.
release the TV show for half a dollar the day after it airs. You can even include a short ad or please dont pirate message at the start or end of the program. Using bittorent it would greatly cut down on your distribution costs making most of that profit. And since your releasing it to a global market and not a single country or region, you have a much large market.
For movies make it two bucks for an in theater movie, a buck and a half for a new DVD release, and a dollar for an older movie. Again, your distribution costs are a fraction of the cost of Apple or Amazon and your reaching a larger market.
Your a company, you have a fiduciary responsibility to maximize profits, not screw yourself over but not adapting new technologies and sue potential customers.
Heck if you want more money, do a little website with a few ads as the front end, and you can advertise transcoding applications and get a chunk of the sales of that too. In this case your making more money off of NOT using DRM. Its not hard.
Sure people are going to steal and distribute it, but could it be any worse then it is now? What do you have to lose... (besides more money if you don't do anything). - Happytired, on 01/02/2008, -0/+22I find it interesting that the movies and shows listed were very successful in ratings and box office. It shows that a good product will succeed regardless of piracy. Crap is crap.
- rockstarkate, on 01/02/2008, -19/+40I paid to see it and wished I had downloaded it.
- kazamx, on 01/02/2008, -1/+20I'm from the UK and love Top Gear, but I am amazed that it is the second most downloaded show. I would have guessed that it was much too much of a British show to prove that popular world wide.
I guess that we need to give props to the three hosts. Between them, they have created a show that every station in the world wishes they had. GZ BBC.
EXTRA: While writing this, I am watching TV, and see that the BBC hare talking about the US election. They are talking about the danger of Huckabee in the election. The BBC are talking about how he could be the worst thing to hit the world since Bush. - GeneralFailure0, on 01/02/2008, -0/+17There's just too much porn. All the downloads are distributed among a huge selection of titles and not one porno is able to rack up enough downloads to be noticed in these top 10 lists.
- dagamer34, on 01/02/2008, -6/+23Or maybe it's because it's generally considered "safer" to download a TV show than a movie. The MPAA and RIAA are after us, but TV networks have no such scary organization to fear.
- bdbr, on 01/02/2008, -0/+16What's to stop you from skipping them now? There's an entire DVR industry built around that.
- tidu, on 01/02/2008, -1/+16make it your new yarrrrs resolution to be able to proudly wear that eyepatch again
- Schneckehaus, on 01/02/2008, -3/+18Hah, well I think the market will naturally adapt to this not-so-new trend in time.
Change is a good thing, It's fascinating to watch these lumbering giants attempt to cope with the lighting paced world of technology that has engulfed and metamorphised their market into something totally alien.
It's probably something like a Christian parent having a kid who eventually converts to Buddhism, haha. - imac12, on 01/02/2008, -0/+15Maybe if BBC America or another US station would get their act together and show the current season, we wouldn't have to resort to downloading it.
I'm one of those people that wait for the torrents to pop up Sunday nights so I can catch the latest episode. I can't get enough of this show. - gnslngr1919, on 01/02/2008, -0/+14The US Office is not the same as The UK Office. Get over it.
- ckny, on 01/02/2008, -0/+14I don't want to watch it on NBC's website with my girlfriend and I huddled over the laptop. I want to be able to stream it on my equipment and watch it on the big screen.
- KevinRoseMustDy, on 01/02/2008, -4/+18I agree, sir.
- SRSco, on 01/02/2008, -0/+13Not on the list.
- jmpeagle, on 01/02/2008, -1/+14also, you can legally view many of the TV shows online for free
- ClunkClunk, on 01/02/2008, -0/+13Speaking as an American, Top Gear is so far beyond our domestic automotive shows it's almost appalling. Our automotive programs tend to either never tread on manufacturer's toes (every car is "great!"), or they're hosted by Jim Bob the Tennessee redneck who showered today because he was "gunna be on the televizzin!"
If they offered TG DVD box sets here in the US, I'd be the first in line to buy them. Instead, I have to pirate it. - Bara, on 01/02/2008, -5/+17"You're" or "You are"
- CountryTime, on 01/02/2008, -9/+21i'd figure that one of the top movies would be a porno
- arbulus, on 01/02/2008, -1/+13re Huckabee: anyone who thinks gays are a public health threat is a dangerous person. The only public health threat is the threat of infecting people with ideas like that. That man makes me sick.
- gpageau, on 01/02/2008, -4/+15Or a Digg user who eventually converts to Christianity.
- Mononuclear, on 01/02/2008, -2/+13I agree with your comment but none of the above ones. I think we should all comment on our agreement or disagreement instead of using those stupid digg up and digg down things in the top right corner. I didn't digg you up or down but I am letting you know that I agree.
- lukas88, on 01/02/2008, -2/+13The humor in the office is relatively subtle compared to most comedy shows on television. Your comment about it "tries way too hard to be funny" makes me think that you are missing the jokes entirely.
- inactive, on 01/02/2008, -0/+11I'm not paying to download TV shows regardless of the pricing plan.
- Mononuclear, on 01/02/2008, -0/+10Netflix and iTunes doesn't count as piracy so they wouldn't include those in the numbers even if they did try and include all means of piracy. This is only torrents from one site (although it is one of the most popular sites). I am sure the executives actually use a more comprehensive list of both legal and illegal means.
- innocentsinner, on 01/02/2008, -0/+10Top Gear is ridiculously amazing. I'm not even a 'car guy' in the least and I love the show.
- ianzu, on 01/02/2008, -1/+11They could start by paying the writers. That would rock.
- TrevorBradley, on 01/02/2008, -0/+10...In America. Many of US network sites block video viewing outside the country.
- lukas88, on 01/02/2008, -0/+10Do you mean the MPAA?
- 4Paws, on 01/02/2008, -2/+11Transformers was so ***** stupid.
- Link459, on 01/02/2008, -2/+11Wait wait wait wait wait
Desperate Housewives was downloaded more than 24?
What the hell... -
