Im not sure if theres a numbered list, but its in order of the twelve ***** pages filled with ads. - slapded, on 05/21/2008, -7/+85pc world's web developers - flop
- inactive, on 05/21/2008, -5/+5612 pages and popups? Yeah, ***** you, PCWorld.
- luisnarvaez582, on 05/21/2008, -2/+42Even if they have a big failure ratio adsense probably backs up any screw ups they do,
- WaveyRavey, on 05/21/2008, -5/+38Orkut has a traffic rank of 11 (Alexa).
Just because it isnt big in America, doesnt mean it failed. There are other countries in this world besides America. - warrior007, on 05/21/2008, -14/+43content is decent , but multiple pages sucks
for submitting all in one page they had not gave printable version for this article
if any one find all in one page , please post the link - rootsm3, on 05/21/2008, -3/+32nice way get in advertising pc world...piss off haha
- bjstiktrix, on 05/21/2008, -8/+36"***** It! It's not on one page."
- domfosnz, on 05/21/2008, -6/+32I wonder what their fail/success ratio is. I bet they had more failures than successes ... so perhaps we should be failing more!
- prezzy, on 05/21/2008, -14/+40buried, ***** pcworld
- geekchic, on 05/21/2008, -2/+27An old saying goes along the lines of "the difference between a sucessful businessman and a failed one is that the sucessful man got up off the floor one more time than the failed one".
In essence - most business ideas are failures - you just have to keep working away at it until you find the one which actually works. - uggidi, on 05/21/2008, -3/+26I wouldn't call Google checkout or Orkut as flops. Google checkout is still in its early stage, though it has a long way to go to match ebay's paypal and Orkut is a huge success in Brazil and India.
- warrior007, on 05/21/2008, -4/+23Google Orkut's may lack of popularity in the U.S but in INDIA it is huge hit , almost every one who use internet few times a week has Orkut account
- thedzigner, on 05/21/2008, -3/+16Dude...TOTALLY agree!! I couldn't be bothered flicking through all that!
- djs71a, on 05/21/2008, -1/+13Get the repagination extension for FF. After installing, right click the "Next" link, select Re-Pagination --> All. Poof, all pages on one screen:
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/209 ... - P5ycHo, on 05/21/2008, -4/+15NOT DUGG due to the ridiculous paging.
- ElbertF, on 05/21/2008, -1/+11Orkut means "ear *****" in Dutch. Maybe that's why it isn't a hit over here.
- CasaMan, on 05/21/2008, -0/+9According to Alexa Orkut is the #11 ranked page worldwide..
http://www.alexa.com/site/ds/top_sites?ts_mode=glo ...
I think both Orkut and Google check-out will increase in popularity when Android turns out to be a success. - binarysemaphore, on 05/21/2008, -3/+11Orkut is a big deal in India. Almost everyone I know and their dogs are on Orkut
- XeXers, on 05/21/2008, -0/+7"If you are not failing, you are not doing anything"
- Mononuclear, on 05/21/2008, -0/+7Same in Brazil. I can't remember the exact number but it is an insane percentage of the population of the country who have an orkut account. I have an account just to keep in touch with my friends in Brazil.
- cowsgonemadd3, on 05/21/2008, -0/+6Falling is still forward motion....
- warrior007, on 05/21/2008, -0/+6i agree with lack of popularity in the US , but they said it was huge hit in Brazil only
what i'm saying is it was huge hit in India also
http://www.alexa.com/data/details/traffic_details/ ... - TheClassic, on 05/21/2008, -3/+9we shouldn't be failing more, just attempting/trying more
- noahhoward, on 05/21/2008, -0/+6Google X, the OSX homage page was probably only up for a day because it was just an homage. I don't think that counts as a failure.
- danielsamuels, on 05/21/2008, -2/+8I used Google Checkout recently, and I think that if enough websites adopt it, it will be great - no more needing to type in your credit card details into every website you buy things off, just enter your Google username and password and your info is there.
It took me about 2 or 3 clicks from basket to bought.
I was very impressed, and will use it again. - scoreboard27, on 05/21/2008, -1/+6You can add these near disasters and security breaches to the list: http://www.itsecurity.com/features/famous-google-h ...
- inactive, on 05/21/2008, -1/+6Or maybe I don't want to be bombarded by banner ads and popups?
- abhiroop, on 05/21/2008, -2/+7The article said BRAZIL
- BoneStamp, on 05/21/2008, -1/+6Thx
- SSCrow, on 05/21/2008, -2/+7I use Google Checkout. Its pretty awesome. I was impressed with all the links it gathered for me as well as the simplicity of the process.
imo, its much better than paypal. - pathfinder2, on 05/21/2008, -0/+5How much did these failures cost Google in terms of money spent? Peanuts I suspect. They can launch hundreds of these little projects at virtually no cost, if they fail no big deal, if they succeed, then they've got another massive channel to pump adsense into.
Then you have Microsoft, who basically pump billions into things with a similar success/failure ratio. How many billions for Yahoo do they want to pay?
Google have got a fantastically cost efficient strategy with these small internal projects. - BoneStamp, on 05/21/2008, -1/+5It's now known as shopping and it's right on the homepage... can't be that big a flop.
- felix21685, on 05/21/2008, -0/+4who in their right mind at PC World thought it was ok to put that on 12 seperate pages?
- davidxavier77, on 05/21/2008, -5/+9it just shows that the way to success is through failure.
- srodolff, on 05/21/2008, -3/+7This is like saying you're a failure for burning your toast 15 years ago.
Most of these are things that were Engineers playgrounds or content not fully deployed.
Do these people even realize how much effort was put in to get Google working in the first place??
How would you like it if google didn't deploy anything until it was completely ready? - Filipp0, on 05/21/2008, -0/+4PC World is so ***** stupid. Orkut is probably the #1 site in Brazil, so it's a great success for Google. Also, they say that one of the reasons that Orkut has lost in America to competition is due to "an absence of video features.". However, as you can see from the screenshot on that very damn page, under Flavia's name: scraps, photos, VIDEOS, fans...
- danlowlite, on 05/21/2008, -0/+4Wow, that worked surprisingly well. Thanks!
- legendxx, on 05/21/2008, -1/+5Anyone who succeeds more than they fail isn't trying hard enough.
- rockrapdude, on 05/21/2008, -0/+4I can't see any ads but the clicking is annoying. People please bury this crap. Who the hell diggs this crap actually?
- BlackholeStorm, on 05/21/2008, -2/+5What's wrong with Google Talk? Plus they did IM in Gmail way before anybody else did.
- kalleanka, on 05/21/2008, -8/+11Wait, they had ads on the page?
- ToastPop, on 04/17/2009, -3/+6I wouldn't call most of these failures. These are mostly projects created in the 20% spare time the employees get, and are offered as nothing more than beta products. They are just tests and cool products to play with that are never fully advertised by the company. Many companies have these sort of things, only they usually restrict the access to employees while Google lets everyone in on it.
- arjung, on 05/21/2008, -2/+51 article, 1 page.
go die PCWorld. - ElBeh, on 05/21/2008, -1/+4Damn PCWorld can't put everything one one page...
- warrior007, on 05/21/2008, -0/+3http://www.customizegoogle.com/
use this plug in , with this u can make normal google in to google suggest and it has some other good features also - WaveyRavey, on 05/21/2008, -1/+4When other people do it, it is usually vaguely relevant.
- sheebz, on 05/21/2008, -1/+4Amen, I got to page 2 and said ***** it. PCWorld sucks.
- kaniz, on 05/21/2008, -0/+2PC World isn't saying Google is a failure. Last page:
"Failure Will You Get You Everywhere
All employees at Google are supposed to spend 20 percent of their time working on personal projects of interest. Google says that the policy encourages creativity. And without Google's willingness to take risks and not be afraid of tripping, stumbling, and sometimes falling flat on its face, the company might not be what it is today. Perhaps Google's greatness can be measured by its failures as well as its successes. "
I wish more companies/industries as a whole would be willing to take more risks and suck up failures.
The aversion to failure is what leads to watered-down sugary pop music, block-buster hits and unoriginal ideas. Instead of taking a risk, and risking failure - companies rather bank on 'sure bets' that have been re-hashed a zillion times before. - iFrikkenR, on 05/22/2008, -0/+2no but each page you have to scroll down to next. You might not really care and just want a quick glance, scrolling quickly through the whole page instead of clicking page after page, waiting for crap you may not care about
pcworld articles suck so hard for this reason -
