- cbenard, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13I have two pairs of those Sony earbuds. One for my portable needs (psp/mp3) that is black, and one set that is white that I use to listen to music at work while coding.
I'd say for the money, they're the best ones out. I did a lot of research before buying them, and I was willing to spend about $50, which is what these retail for. I ended up getting them through my Dell rep at work for about $36, IIRC.
I wholeheartedly recommend anyone looking for earbuds give those a go. The bass response is AWESOME for such cheap earbuds.
Edit: Buy.com has them for $30 now it looks like. ( http://tinyurl.com/78qjd ) - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12Had a pair of the Sony MDR-EX71SL and they broke very quickly with normal usage. The sound quality was decent however.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Odd. I can't afford ANY of these.
- headzoo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6How about the top 10 gadgets under $50. Some of us like our gadgets, but can't drop hundreds of dollars every month for this kind of stuff.
- Cippy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Yes, any mp3.
You can get a holster clip for it. These things have tons of accessories.
I think the shuffle is worth the price. Seriously, it's not much. It's a quality product, much better than getting some no-name-brand mp3 player that will crap out after a year of use.
If you're that concerned with the price, you can save $10 and grab a refurbished one from Apple's Store, or possibly save more elsewhere.
I'm a proud owner of a Shuffle, and I'm very happy to see it on the top 10. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7too bad none of them are appealing to me
- sokz, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9I may be alone in this but I find the article pretty lame.. I can pick my own low grade gadgets..
- radu79, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5"In addition to the discs most players can handle (DVD, CD, MP3-CD, JPEG), this supports DVD R/RW and discs burned with DivX and MPEG-4 video, meaning you can watch those 100% legal video downloads on your big-screen TV. Price: $55"
That made me smile (the 100% legal part).
P.S. I wish there was a way to use Bold tags.. - Migdilio, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I have the Logitech Z-2300 speaker system (purchased after reading the glowing CNET review), and let me say: they're worth every single penny. They are - by far - the best possible speakers you can buy in their price range.
- balognytts, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6http://blog.scifi.com/tech/archives/top_10_gadgets_for_the_filthy_rich.html
The companion article 10 gadgets for the filthy rich (in case you cannot read HTML). - wai_xing_ren, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Stupid question: Can I load ANY mp3 onto an iPod Shuffle?
I've considered buying an mp3 player for some time, because my CD Walkman skips during jogging. It would be much more convenient for me to rip my CDs to mp3 and use something like the iPod instead. I don't know anything about these things, though. I don't really listen to music or collect music and music gadgets.
The iPod Shuffle looks great. Just need some kind of "holster" or clip for it. Hmm...maybe I should start wearing a bra underneath my gym shirt. - catastrophee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I bought my mom the Philips 642/37 DVD player for christmas and it's amazing for the price. It plays everythign ive thrown at it from SVCD to DVD(I think +)R. It's also very slim so it fits right on top of the cable box.
- ahawks, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6$50 for headphones is a lot. Luckily you can find them on Amazon for $29. (and free shipping)
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000092YQW/sr=8-1/qid=1148609817/ref=pd_bbs_1/002-6203704-2681635?%5Fencoding=UTF8 - Hydroxyl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3For number 3 on the list:
"...this supports DVD+R/RW and discs burned with DivX and MPEG-4 video, meaning you can watch those 100% legal video downloads on your big-screen TV."
hehehehehe. - radu79, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Try looking on eBay for that. I got a 256 MB MP3 player for 1 dollar (the battery doesn't charge). Pretty cheap, considering that what I want to use it is for a system to scare the birds, so they will let me sleep at night.
- 7of7, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3The 6400 is pretty cool, but how is $50 for a pair of headphones not for the rich?
- electronicmaji, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2dont spend money on earbud headphones those 50 dollar ones dont sound much better then the 10 dollar sony ones walmart sell which are actually pretty decent and sound a hella lot better than the stock ipod headponhes
the money lies in the proffesional dj headphones the sony MDRs I beleive there called the MDR-80 or 50 something like that is the dj standard..costs from 80 to 120 dollars but theyre quality...better than any damn pitiful earbud thingies..
also if you look on ebay people sell the left over headphones from the concorde which are really hight quality happauge headphones i beleive ...you can get them for like over 100 dollars less than the price for the consumer version with the same quality..
edit: actually there the Sennheiser hd25 ...search ebay for those.. - Haqur, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Yeah. I'm not understanding the shuffle nor the portable DVD player. Who uses those things? I'm not even sure I know anyone in the market to toast $500 on a DV cam. This is quote a 'random' list of kinda cheap end stuff.
- Bender, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3No way I buy that Dell laptop. I've seen too many Dell Laptops that thier screen has broken some way or another in less than a year. One of them the hinges simply broke. Another developed a red line down the middle of the screen. Give me a IBM/Lenovo anyday.
- jamesvaughn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It's sad that with all the cool technology out there today most people even on this supposedly high tech site when they think of gadgets envision boring consumer knick knacks like mp3 players, digital cameras, dvd players, etc. The media companies have you all thinking cutting edge equals a better pipeline to their goods. There are equally affordable infrared goggles, vertical climbing suctions, 1-man vehicles, handheld pcs that figure interesting things out, body composition analyzers, various do-it-yourself electronics/mechanical kits, plus plenty other amazing things out there.
- theotheragentm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I own a pair of these, and the wires are slightly flimsy. Sound only comes out of the left earbud as I have slept with them on one too many times. These are great for the price, which should be closer to $30. If you want to get to the $100 range, get Grado SR80 headphones. They're not earbuds. They're over ear, open air headphones, and the quality is superb. I thought the MDR-EX71SLs were good, but the Grados are incredible.
- wilf_brim, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'm putting my vote in for these Sony's. They really are the best you can find for the price. Yes, the wires are a bit sketchy, but so are the wires for my Eytomotic ER-6i s. They have very acceptable sound, and do provide some sound isolation.
I am now on my third pair, but not Sony's fault. Pair one got eaten by the dog, and I lost one of the ear covers when the earbuds got ripped from my head while I was working in the yard (happens alot). For some reason, the cords to earbuds seem to be very tasty to dogs and cats. Don't know why, but they love to chew on them whenever they can. - ThinkBox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+250$ for qualit headphones is very cheap, seriously, you dont have to be rich to spend 50$ on a computer part.
I mean, come on, this is a tech forum. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5unless you can't afford the Nano, don't bother with the shuffle.
as per fuseenmuse's comment, unless you use itunes there are plenty quality flash based players out there other than buying an overpriced apple product. - rnelsonee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2FWIW, the 6400 Duo Processor is $750, not $700. Dell's lead-in page to the 6400 line is a bit misleading - they say "from $699" and "Core Duo", but the lowest end model doesn't have a Duo processor...
- Fett101, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Were fantastic earbuds. Got them at a decent price off eBay. Too bad the rubbery wire coating melted off about 6 months in. Seems to be a common problem if you check out Amazon. Supposedly the latest ones have been fixed of the problem though. Let's hope.
- fronta1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2i have them too mig...they are nice
the only trouble is...they all sound different, ive purchased 3 prs of these puppies and each one sounded different
tru-best for the $ - GliTCH82, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2RCA makes some crappy TV sets by the way. They can't even get CRTs right so I would steer clear away from their projection systems. But don't take my word for it, hit up google for reviews and you'll find complaints of the tube blowing out in about a week.
- quanticle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2BugMeNot: The service is $16.95 per month. Doesn't sound like a whole lot, but it adds up. On the other hand, it is only slightly more expensive than World of Warcraft and it doesn't need an additional hardware upgrade to work.
- ant1832, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I've had the 71's and the 81's who's price has dropped to just over $30 as well (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0007N55LE). Both are a great buy for that price. If I had to pick between the 2, I'd probably take the 81's.
Just be sure to keep the extra buds. I lost mine twice and have only found one place online to get replacements. The problem is that after shipping its like $15. May as well get a new pair for that price. - Schda, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@quanticle
I have a question about that Tivo. If I decided to hook up an antenna to it, how many TV streams could it record and does it have a problem switching channels? Right now I pay about 40 bucks a month for local channels and DVR service from my cable company. If I had this I'd be free of my cable company and would be very very happy. I need to be able to record at least two channels and schedule them. If this does it I'm sold :) - Llan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Could you elaborate your unnecessary flaming or is your username meant to give you enough expert credit to listen to your wise words?
- Permanent4, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1There's a lot to disagree with in this piece.
1.) A 1GB iPod nano can be had for $150 or less. I think that's worth the premium over the Shuffle, and it's not that expensive for what you get.
2.) That Olympus has gotten panned in some reviews. You can find a decent Canon digicam for the same price or less.
3.) You can find Samsung DLP sets for $1200 to $1500, and they would deliver much better picture quality than that RCA. (A friend of mine got a 46" Samsung DLP for less than $2K, and HD looks AWESOME.)
4.) Spend the extra $30 on the dual-tuner TiVo, you cheapskate. The subscription fee is still the same.
On the other hand, the Philips DVP642 is a great call. I've had a DVP642 for a few years, and it works great. - chesterjosiah, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I also bought the Sony earbuds. I bought 'em because my ears are too small for the original Apple iPod earbuds, and these come with three different sized pairs of buds. When my boss saw me rockin' these, he bought a pair too. The sound quality is great! I'm jammin' to 'em now. :-)
- Eccles, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1$50 for a shuffle from the Apple Outlet store, and you know it will work reasonably well with iTunes, which is a decent music library program. At that price it's worth it for the low hassle.
- rishdeep, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I think I'm the most experienced in these Sony headphones. I have actually gone through 4 of them. No joke, and I ALWAYS have had to replace them for the same reason everytime - the sound in one of the earphones always cuts out due to a loose connection or whatever. At £30-£35 a pop, thats a lotta cash.
As much as I love the portablilty and great sound of them, I've gotten to the point that I'm pissed off with having replacing them. Anyone know a pair that I can get that provide the same comfort and sound quality (if not better) and more durable wires. I use an iPod (compressed music) so I don't need headphones that are TOO 'audiophilic'. - ronaldhennessy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I can afford an iPod shuffle, but I can't afford a $1,000 HDTV projection TV...and most importantly, how in the hell do I get that up to the second floor without professional help?
- gmerin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1At first I thought the 6400 looked interesting, but then I noticed the CPU is a dual-core 32-bit cpu: I really don't need a dual core to run multiple 32-bit apps slowly. I think I'll wait for the next generation of the Intel CPU (Core 2) or get one of the AMD dual core 64-bit machines.
- fishbert, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yeah, credibility went right out the window when I saw an iPod Shuffle at the top of the page.
- nodnarb24, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1$50 isn't a bad price for a decent pair of headphones. I spent $100 on my Sennheiser headphones and they are worth every penny and I'm far from rich. Then again, if you don't have the ears to tell the difference, then it can be a bit pricey. If you are really hardcore, you can easily spend $500 on a really high-end pair of headphones.
- colinmhayes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1$50 for any stereo component is cheap as hell
- wilf_brim, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Agreed with you both. I am somewhat happy, as I have 5 of the 10 products on the list. I am listening to the Logitechs right now. You simply cannot find a better set of 2.1 speakers for the price anywhere. These dogs have 200 watts of THX certified goodness.
Oh, and the price is wrong, though, way high. Here they are at Newegg, for $93.99, there is a $10.00 savings going on now. The shipping is somewhat expensive, but that is because the speakers (and especially the sub) are very heavy. If you listen to lots of music on your computer, get these. Right now.

I don't WANT any of these. - seattle98104, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1no nintendo ds? no mac mini?
- kolop1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1 They said LCD. Not plasma. Get it right. They said LCD screens are not worth mentioning.
- Cheeseness, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2HTML?
lol
The page won't even load if you don't have flash installed. - Continuum, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I know they might not have the best sound out there but I love my RCA headphones. I can treat them like ***** (which i do anyways) and replace them 3 times before I would spend the $50 for the sony ear buds. Then again, I hate ear buds. Here is a link to the RCA headphones I am talking about.
http://tinyurl.com/ohusj - OBKenobi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1
The 6400 is pretty cool, but how is $50 for a pair of headphones not for the rich?
Yes, the 6400 is pretty cool, but they claim it is good for gaming, when in the config they listed it is unsuitable for most AAA games released this year. It will be completely obsolete for gaming next year. Unless you like old games. - ummagummas08, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Woah did I just read a Best Buy Advertisement, or was it an article worthy of front page digg material?? I'm thinking its more along the lines of the first, with uber mainstream gadgets that no one can actually afford. So this should be categorized as lame, innaccurate, spam. 'Nuff said mofos
- Haqur, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Not to digress but I went through quite a few Dell laptops before I actualy realized their impecable ability to fall apart.
