White flight is an observed social reaction wherein the white community leaves the city to dwell in the safer, newer, higher income, more stable (and just plain more desirable) suburbs surrounding the city. This happens a lot in places like Detroit where mainly the black population flocks to the inner city and crime rates rise by extreme amounts.
Detroit used to have over 2 million people, and it's now down to less than 1 million. That's because of the white flight to the surrounding 'burbs. The jobs are still there since people commute to the city, but the population is down. How does this account for the decreased crime rate? Fewer white middle-class victims sticking around the city to be victimized. - IronChef, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1They have to smuggle books into Tennessee.........
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Detroit # 37 least safe......maybe they should take another look."
Detroit's actually gotten a lot better with crime recently. It was at one point (I believe) the most dangerous city, and has since improved a lot, thanks mostly to white flight to the 'burbs. Well, if Warren and GP count as the 'burbs.
Anyway, Detroit's a great city. And in case of the draft or any other crap US thing, Canada's right next door. - redb369, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@ berean
There is no "white flight" from Detroit. There are very few white's left in the city, its been that way for years. Detroit was once a great city and could be again if they would just stop bringing race into everything. Every problem in the city is blamed on the "white" burbs, its never the mayor, city council, or the voting citizen in generals fault. It's just sad really.
Oh and not all southerners are "absolutely retarded"....just most of them :)
- mikelly, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The "Top 100 Safest Cities" practically translates to "anywhwhere in Massachusetts".
- Arramol, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Site needs an update. San Antonio passed Dallas a while back. Although the D/FW Metroplex is still much larger than San Antonio and its minor satellites.

Perhaps? - redb369, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Detroit # 37 least safe......maybe they should take another look.
- zenkenobi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The weird thing with these stats is that so many define city as "population 5000+" or "population 2000+" - how is that a city? I think that's why the big cities don't pop up much. It's easier for small populations to have statistical anomalies.
- RadicalBender, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Holy crap! McKinney, TX is the fastest growing city in the U.S. over 50,000? Whoa. That's suburban sprawl for you. The privilege of a 90 minute commute.
(That's the county seat of the county directly north of Dallas, TX, for those who don't know.) - Guano, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Wow, California is a pretty dumb state.
- sanmarcos, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Wow, california is a pretty dumb state".
It is because of the latino culture (predominantly mexican central american) (not race) of non studying. Generations of bad educated people. It will take decades for that to change.
Some souther cone countries, Argentina, Chile, Uruguay, Southern Brazil, in contrast are WAY more educated, but the US spectrum of Latino is a burrito eating mexican. - Jakelshark, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I didnt see my city of Memphis on anything but 'least safe' where it was ranked way bellow what it has been in recent years....not even its population was listed (roughly 650,000 in city and 1,000,000 in metropolis)
- PhantomBantam, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0zenkenobi, I completely agree. I live in a town of 3000, and I can tell you right now that it's not by any means a city. I think only cities with a metropolitan population should be included on such lists. For example, kingston, RI is really a part of Providence, RI. Afterall, rhode island really is just 1 city.
- LexisNexis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hawaii has 27 out of 100 of the most racially diverse cities, we dominate the top four spots too!
Aiea (#42) is where I live woohoo! - ladyflux6, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Those that wish to go live in the cities with the largest females population, beware!rn68% female isnt normal! It must be some sort of sect that sacrifice human males, maybe they eat them too who knows!
- osxmusic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0That site is awesome
- manfrin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0My tiny little city of Orinda is number 66 of median income. :)
- Deputy_Doodah, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The reason so many California "cities" fall into the Least-Educated category is because of all the illegals who live there. Most towns that are listed are in the agricultural areas. The rest are in the desert where there is no population to speak of...."Earl and his wife didn't go to school" would gain a "city" a rating of 60% uneducated.
Earlimart, Arvin, et al can be found by looking for the grain silos and the smell of fertilizer. It's also a given that if you stop for gas there, you'll be the only English speaker in a 20 mile radius. Most of the residents grew up in piss hole-type countries where they never had a chance to go to school (or were denied the chance) and where picking lettuce in California's central valley is considered a good career move. - IraqManiac, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm loving this list! good information to be used when I probably move
- fredgarvin1138, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wierd, the city with the highest house cost to income ration (people who paid way too much for their house) is in California (Isla Vista): Average income $16,000, avergage house price $400,000 WTF?
A few REALLY expensive houses, and a LOT of low-paid servants? - edicttree, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0these lists are totally inaccurate. miami fl, with 3 million people, doesn't make the population list, but hialeah fl, a small suburb of miami, does. had no idea that little old hialeah was where all of miami actually lived.
- knokoutned, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0why is this on digg, i used this site last year for a school project, lol
- sec6502, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hmmm... St. Joseph seems to be getting a little crowded. Maybe I should pick one of the towns a few places down...
How about Lima, Pennsylvania? That ought to do fine.
...
ARGH! Perhaps I should have checked the Median Age they so thoughtfully provided... - akamia123, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0awesome... Florida dominates the cities with the most retired people. 63 of 100 are in Florida.

http://test-help.org/praxisii.htm - cmykx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0No digg. This list must be outdated. Newton, MA has been indicated as the safest city in the USA for the last couple of years and isn't even on the top 100 list.
- riskable, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I call BS on this list. It seems to have loads of errors and the errors are surprisingly selective. Why isn't Jacksonville, FL in any of the city lists? It certainly would make the top 100 in at least ten of them!
For instance, "Jax" has a population of 735,617 as of the 2000 census data (which this list seems to be built off of). That would place it at the #13 spot. It would also take the #1 slot for the "most racially diverse" city.

Not sure why you think there's no white flight from Detroit. Every social scientist I've met will tell you as much, and Wikipedia says, "The effects of white flight have been significant for the cities that have been affected by this phenomenon, especially in Detroit...."
I'm not saying Detroit's problems are caused by white flight. In fact, I'm saying that's one of the reasons Detroit's crime rate has gone down (and it's also had significant impact on the rebuilding process). There are plenty of reasons for Detroit's problems, but that in no way negates the extreme white flight event that's been witnessed in Detroit. - AUGTRON, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0this year, Detroit was voted #2 safe city (after somewhere in NJ) #1 most dangerous for women and #1 fattest. Man, im getting sick of detroit... if they included some smaller 'cities' under 5000 then places like troy and bloomfield hills and franklin would be on there.
- jumjum, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0To berean, New Englanders far more than southerners are retarded. You couldn't give me all the money in the world to live in a chowd's/Taxachussan's/Crackmorian's shoes. Plus that region elected Chuck Schumer, Patrick Leahy, Ted Kennedy, Howard Dean, and John Kerry into office more than once - they might as well secede. They also are by far the least charitable of the other regions of the nation, while they make the most money.
Their politicians are so stupid that they are actually fighting against the NSA wiretaps: the left's very belief core is infringing on personal liberty and penalizing the American Dream by using the Communist Manifesto as a supreme reference, the wiretaps are the greatest thing to happen to the left in the history of this nation and they're -fighting- it, legendarily betraying their own beliefs to the absolute extreme in the process. Don't get me wrong, I'm -glad- they're fighting the wiretaps because it's a police state cornerstone being laid, but the reasons they're fighting it are light years away from mine.
They also don't seem too confident in their political futures, as on their position on the war in Iraq, if they did well at the polls and became the majority again, they would be able to install any 'hate America' regime they wanted that match their own "Blame America First" protocol. If you took the terrorist talking points and matched them up with the left's, you would not be able to tell the difference. Because there aren't any.
The blatantly obvious and damning stuff aside, that citizenry live their lives in such a way that their ancestors were probably criminals fleeing their homeland and came to the U.S. to escape punishment. Like it or not, those sorts of traits pass down from generation to generation. - leftfoot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Sweet, I live in the 15th largest city in the US, (Austin, Texas)

wtf - scotsman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0St. Joseph, Minnesota - most women
I'm moving there! - redb369, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Im not saying there hasnt been white flight out of Detroit, that's not even open for debate. What I am saying is there is none now for the simple reason that there really is no one left to flee. The line has been drawn....in the concrete of 8 Mile. However the burbs are starting to suffer the same fate as Detroit. I personally know at least 5 families who have moved from Warren, Eastpointe area out to Richmond, over 20 miles away. Detroit is divided and its not getting better. At this rate there may not be a Detroit in the future. Nobody seems to care about it anymore.
- umterp09, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0good story, +digg
- Arramol, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Oops, didn't mean to sound like a troll. Site is still interesting. Wow, six of the hundred largest cities are in the D/FW Metroplex (Dallas, Fort Worth, Arlington, Garland, Plano, Irving).
- anchondo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i dont know about all the stats on here but on the biggest cities i think it is about right on...Those of you wondering why memphis and other cities arent on the list or arent on top. It is probably because it looks like the stats are for actual in city pop. Ex. My city omaha is #41 on the list. St. louis is lower than my city which when you think about it , you say how can that be. St louis's pop. is mostly suburbs and werent counted, cuz if they were they would be a lot bigger than omaha. So for in city stats i believe they are correct.
