But why wasn't it just named "First 100 Registered Domain Names?" - stklaw, on 10/10/2007, -2/+31That's right.
The internet's first web page is a 404 page. - Bricks, on 10/10/2007, -0/+29Let me get this straight. 100 domains, but no trace of the following words: "busty," "amateur," "donkey," "webcam."

- shyanbelle, on 10/10/2007, -0/+17I had a problem loading this link so I just went right to their forums from the main page and the technology section and it worked fine that way. Here is the direct URL
http://forum.popuplace.com/showthread.php?t=338997 - 11Heather, on 10/10/2007, -1/+18Cool! If only I had a time machine...
- yomamaisfat, on 10/10/2007, -0/+12I'm surprised porn names aren't at the top of the list. The porn industry is like the Nostradamus of new technology.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+11Apple in 87, but where is Microsoft?. Damn, Tandy even came in before Apple and MS.
- ApplCmptrDood, on 10/10/2007, -1/+11My dad had the chance to squat NYSE.org, .com, etc. He didn't take it :(
- nysus, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10In the first few months of the Internet, no one but the technical elite knew how to even register a domain name, let alone figure out that they would someday be worth money. The first 100 domains were certainly registered by the actual companies.
- sleeknerve, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9the second one
- elvisjulep, on 10/10/2007, -1/+10Mentat.com. Score one for the Dune fans.
- BJNK, on 10/10/2007, -4/+12I swear between Digg and FARK, they just keep recycling each others stories. On Digg Monday, on FARK Wednesday.. On FARK Tuesday, on Digg Thursday..
Or maybe I just spend too much time wasting time online..... - MagicCake, on 10/10/2007, -2/+9He got "liar "wrong, but he got "lose" right... I think he breaks even.
- nymphetamine, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8http://duggmirror.com/tech_news/Top_100_List_of_the_internet_s_First_Registered_Domain_Names/
- crushfan, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6LOL, the Internet.
- DiggDugglas, on 10/10/2007, -7/+13Interesting stuff. It should be noted that few of those domains were actually registered to the companies they're named after. Most of these were domain squatters.
- buddamus, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7wish i bought Microsoft.com and made a porn site
- CubiX, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Technically it's not 404. It's a database error, so it's more like 505 (internal server error) or something like that.
- kjcdude, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5You could say the funniest thing in the world, but if you spam you will be dugg down.
- Psyber1an, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5...you'll find The Wayback Machine over at archive.org...
- counterplex, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4He might not be a lier (sic) but you're an idiet (sic).
- ummmmm, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Those sites don't pass the XHTML validator!
- The0, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5Thanks for saving us the time and effort by identifying your biggest personal failure all by yourself.
- nakile, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Wow. Symbolics still works. Wonder if it's the same company from back in 85?
Here's a better question: What was a .com domain name even used for back then? I have no clue. - inkswamp, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3I'll probably get buried for pointing this out despite it being a fact, but Microsoft's execs around the late-80s and early-90s are on record with their collective doubts about the future of the Internet. There was a general sense that the Internet was not where computing was going. I have no idea how they could have possibly thought that, but once things like AOL and the WWW/Netscape started becoming household words, MS reversed course pretty quickly.
- ummmmm, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Wow check out the source code of those sites!
- grbruner, on 10/10/2007, -0/+32.5 years to register 100 domain names...I bet we do 100 new names a bit faster these days.
- Kitsune818, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3I think it's important to point out a bit of context regarding these domains. They were probably not intended for the public at large to find them. At the time, there was very little public with access to the network to be an audience. A lot of you are looking at this like they registered their company names to provide a public "point of presence", such as hosting a website, but I don't even think we had gopher in 85. Domains were not PR, they were just so things could get routed more efficiently.. probably mostly email and FTP traffic between colleagues. I'm pretty sure we were still using bang-path addresses then, too.
- Kitsune818, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Because ASCII didn't have the same impact.
(_o_) - Urusai, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3They didn't have pictures on the Internets back then. All of the pictures were still on BBSes.
- crazzy88ss, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2hey my dad worked for Mentor back in the day.
- jamangold, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Symbolics.com is still as simplistic today as it was in 1998 (the earliest archive that exists for it).
- mcmullet, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3How did you register a domain name in 1985 or 1986 anyway?
- skav, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2
by BJNK 28 minutes ago
Biggest personal failure? That's awfully presumptuous of you.
Yeah! Homeboy's got some WAYY bigger failures, oh BELIEVE ME GIRLFRIEND
-BJNK's wife - skuk, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2sco.com what a shame what happened to them.
- resplence, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Interesting to note that Apple (was) registered before Microsoft.
- Kitsune818, on 10/10/2007, -0/+21) The webpage which you apparently loaded says that they are not the same company in almost the first sentence.
2) .com was (and still is) intended for "Commercial" entities, which were somewhat nouveau and rare at the time. ~85, the majority of the people on the network were still government, educational, and research staff. It's around 85 when people were starting to get pissed about the commercialization of one of man's greatest intellectual achievements, and tried to section them (commercial types) off with their own domain. It didn't work. - rss2pdf, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2What, no triple-hyphen-umlauts ?
- tetfsu, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1SYMBOLICS.COM
The first .COM domain, looks like it hasn't changed the site's look in 22 years. This web page is older than the average age of Digg users. - yorxs, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I am confused, what is the purpose of registering a domain name in 1985 if the World Wide Web was not invented until 1989 IIRC? How did some view contect pre WWW?
- Kitsune818, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Tandy had a somewhat lucrative Aggricultural text service around that time, whose terminal eventually became the Tandy Color Computer. Some claim the original specs for the CoCo line included an ethernet port.. could have been related. However, I doubt they intended to do much with the domain for home users. At the time, very few end users had access to the network, so most likely it was something internal. There was no "public presence" paradigm like we associate with a .com today.
- wassim2k, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2DatabaseError.com
- LeapFrog, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1The article misses the point that hundreds, if not thousands of .mil, .edu, and .com domains were registered in the Domain Name System after its creation and well before the transfer of management responsibility of the DNS registry to the private sector. That is why you don't see names like "honeywell.com" in the supposed '1st 100' list. Honeywell produced many of the Internet Message Processors that were among the first network nodes on ARPANET, and honeywell.com was in the DNS in the 1970's - long, long before the date shown on the current registry.
http://cyber.law.harvard.edu/icann/pressingissues2000/briefingbook/dnshistory.html
Buried as inaccurate. - findhostcoupons, on 03/21/2009, -0/+1Great list, very interesting to know!
- darthmoonman, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1again with the list, is it that time of the year again?
- Kitsune818, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1You called up InterNIC, which handled things until about 1999 IIRC.
- duck_oil, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1You shouldn't get bured, it's true. MS can thank J Allard for alerting them to this thing called the Internet.
