A better question is why does Direct TV hate Tivo? - roy182, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1***READ THIS***
I just cancelled Tivo since cable provides PVR for 4.95/mo. When I called to cancel Tivo, they offered to lower my subscription to 6.95/mo. from 12.95/mo. I still cancelled but for you guys who are still on Tivo, take advantage of this if you haven't done so. - TheGSRGuy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It's a bit cumbersome to use. I'd like the weather displayed right in the channel banner or something like that. Frankly, in the time it takes me to pull up the weather or traffic, I could've just walked over to my laptop and clicked the bookmark for NOAA.
- JAWA, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Tivo needs to stop messing with these garbage features and make a standalone two tuner High Definition Tivo that the average Joe can afford. I preached Tivo to everyone I knew until I got an HD TV. Now, I pay less for the cable company's dual tuner HD DVR. It may not be as user friendly as the Tivo, and it isn't hackable (needs more hard drive space), but you know what, it reliably records my shows in High Definition, and that's all I really need. In my book a beautiful picture trumps user interface.
I actually still use my Tivo for non-HD content, but I find myself going back to it less and less. - fudgebrown, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1press releases:
http://www.tivo.com/5.3.1.asp - timefreeze, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I love Tivo, but I'm not sure why you'd need this stuff on Tivo... don't we have computers with Internet for this already?
- shiftless, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Great! Glad I finally ordered a compatible wireless adapter. x_x
- TeChGuRL19, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0You Got the update already GSRguy?????
- vypergts, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Sorry that should say:
"Just applied for the update! Can't wait!"
Stupid FF update messed up Greasemonkey... - TeChGuRL19, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0very cool. Lookin' forward to the update!
- alt3r360, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Not all good news...
Dierctivo users are still screwed.
"""This feature is for TiVo Series2 Digital Video Recorders only!
DIRECTV DVR with TiVo, and TiVo Series1 DVRs are not eligible for this update."" - StarDal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yet one less reason to get Digital Cable / Satellate with only generic DVR funcionality. I wonder if those cable partners that have signed with TiVo (ex: Comcast) will be able to provide these services via their Cable Boxes. If so, then more power to them.
- DRawkus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0this. is. awesome.
- Eschel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"'Why does Tivo hate Directv?'

That's exactly it. DirecTV doesn't want to include any of the features, for their own arcane reasons. - johnhummel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Sweet - I'm actually looking forward to this. If the podcasts rise in popularity and financing, we could start seeing a real competitor to "standard TV".
And *that* would be cool. - maverick999, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0+digg, but who really wants to listen to a podcast on their TV? I'd rather watch my TV...

http://www.caseypicker.com - ezalis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Since you can sign up for Flickr with a Yahoo ID I wonder if they'll have support for that too.
- kevbryant, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Stock Symbol: TIVO. All Im gonna say.
- vicsmith, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Tivo is the greatest thing. I'd rather give them the 12.95 a month than to give extra $ and power to comcast directly. I have on-demand too. It's called Tivo. I also have a DVD Recorder, thus giving me permanent, unlimited on-demand.
>>>"It's a bit cumbersome to use. I'd like the weather displayed right in the channel banner"
I usually just look out the window. The thermometer is right outside it also, killing two birds with one stone. A third bird, the coffepot, sits right next to that window. Trifecta. - rajkalex, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Why does Tivo hate Directv?
- kirk06, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Well, since it is released finally, the NDA can finally go out the window! I was happy to see Diggnation listed in the Technology section of the Podcaster application. Sure, you can manually add any podcast's RSS feed to listen, but Diggnation is actually one of the default podcasts Tivo provides. Thought it was kind of nifty.
- archer75, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Probably because the Direct TV software is a bit different. And I think Direct TV is also dumping Tivo. Why upgrade that software if it's just going away?
- buckdog05, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wow, that is pretty cool, and I love the interface, but it won't sway me from my PC with Azureus.
- Allanon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Galleon already provides many of these features plus more but Tivo's implementation will not require my computer to be on which is a plus.
- darkmane, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I dug this, but I don't think this makes a huge difference to me. I don't use Yahoo's services. I might look up movie times via Fandango, but I don't like giving them money unless absolutely necessary.
Podcasts: Ok, this sounds like a great feature, but 1) I'd need to be able to get it to my music player (An iPod), so that wouldn't really work for me, 2) with vidcasts coming out, most targeted towards the iPod video, I think that TiVo needs to make the formats they accept more flexible so that I can use the content on my TiVo.
I'd really like to see more dual tuner TiVos, a slightly better UI (Really the current one is great, but I could make some tweaks that would improve it) and a way to look at my todo list and show all the conflicts so I could optimize my rankings. - CPedison, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Too bad Tivo is bowing down to the RIAA/MPAA demands of a broadcast flag. Even without the government imposed broadcast flag in place, Tivo is implementing it for them.
- HIPAA_Notic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Sweet. . . if only TiVo would support WPA.
- AirShark, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0kirk06- "Well, since it is released finally, the NDA can finally go out the window!"
If you have ever participated in a TiVo Beta, you would know that the NDA is NOT void after the release has gone public. You may talk about the new features publicly, but not about how you learned of them or of any involvment you had in their testing or development...including the fact that you even saw them prior to public release.
Or so I hear ;-) - jjhawkins, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Have to agree with you timefreeze and I'm an owner of a Tivo and Tivo stock. I want the company to prosper - but I don't think these flurry of "enhancements" are going to do much to bring in new subscriptions which should be priority #1 since the partnership with DirectTV went kaput and subscriptions will continue to plummet.
People need to be convinced they NEED a Tivo. Weather and movie ticket purchasing, etc. are great additions for us current subscribers - but the guy deciding between his cable companies generic DVR and Tivo isn't going to run out and grab a Tivo because he can now play pai gow poker on his television. - TheGSRGuy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I am a TiVo beta tester, so yes, I've had it for a while.
- timeshifter, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Agree that TiVo needs to get off their ass and release a HD TiVo NOW! Just got an HDTV about a month ago and then the crappy Motorola DCT6412 from my cable company. I think their only hope is to get more cable companies to build TiVo service into the cable company box. The DVR I get from my cable company costs about $14 per month, but that includes the basic HD channels. TiVo will have tough sell at $12.95 plus a $500 plus HD box.
- siouxmoux, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I am glad I Never got DirecTV Tivo or PVR from Comcast. Unfortunately I am stuck for my TV with Comcast and Just raise their rates an whopping 8%. With their business model, to get this functionality from their PVR I would have folk over another $3 to Comcast! With Tivo they include these great new enhancement with their normal mouth service fee. Since I really paid for the lifetime service plan. They could raise their rates but the would be shot in the foot for tivo.
- angrybulldog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0When is Tivo going to realize that us "longtime" Tivo fans, I mean serious fans, I have 3 DirecTV Tivo units, ... when are they going to cut us in on the fun? This sucks ... I want my web2.0 Tivo ;)
- rautox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Very cool. I keep thinkin' that the time is nearly right to roll my own dvr. This'll keep me thinkin' while doin' sumthin else.
- gay_as_xmas, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It's cool they added features but I have Tivo SeriesII with WiFi and almost never use the non-TV internet features. That's why I have a PC.
- peerk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Looks cool, but it doesn't do my 4 year old series 1 Tivo or my parent's DirecTV tivo any good.
- calculus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0+digg... Forcing an update now!!
- macslut, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This has potential. I like the idea of being able to set up my parents to see photos I send to them, though the process for going through the signup seemed rather slow. Also, maybe it was just me, but I couldn't figure out how to "subscribe" to podcasts. It was easy to find and play them, but I didn't like the idea of always having to navigate to them as opposed to iTunes which lets you subscribe...and since TiVo lets you play iTunes playlists, it seems easier to do it through iTMS which I synch with my iPod anyway. I also couldn't seem to find RocketBoom which is a pretty popular video podcast on iTMS.
The games weren't too spectacular, but good time killers I suppose if there was really nothing on...or had been recorded. - vypergts, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0
