- Sparkhead, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7It does not make a group picture from single pictures, the summary is wrong.
What it does do is let you take several pictures of the same group at the same time. So some people will look ok in one shot, some will look ok in the other, etc. but you might not get one pic where everyone's eyes are open or looking in the right direction. This lets you take the faces out of several different shots and merge then into one composite of the multiple images so you get one good group shot.
It's also old news. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4why are you using Photoshop as a verb? Does Photoshop have the official patent on grouping pictures?
I guess everytime I add graphics to a web page, I'll say, "Man, I totally Dreamweavered my website today." - fa_pa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2what does that tool do? the screenshots don't give me a picture of what the tool is doing and the description pretty much sucks.
- CritCol, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I think it's a rather cool toll and if anything a reason to finally use the multi-shot function and a majority of the space on a 1GB SD. Think about it. Every picture you want, you take 3 images in close precision and when you get home composite them together to make the perfect image. Not a bad tool.
- MrMysterious, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Installed. Disappointed. Uninstalled.

It would fit in perfectly! - super_structure, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Provided you have two (or more) photos of the same group, you can pick the best elements from each to composite into an improved product. Note they are able use use the photo with girls eyes closed and the photo with people in the background together to remove those elements.
It's very common to take several pictures of groups in a row that you could use this with. Now, it doesn't matter that someone blinked in this or that photo, as long as they didn't blink in all of them! - Battlecry, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I don't think submitter realises what this tool does. Let's say you're on the beach, and you and your woman are having your picture taken together. As long as you have multiple shots of yourselves taken around the same time frame, this program will allow you to take elements from the other photos and combine them into one good photo. One without redeye that doesn't have you squinting and no miscalleneous people walking in the background ruining your shot.
- theone3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Dreamweavered "
Surely you mean dreamwove? :P - Larakin, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2I just tried it out on exactly what it is supposed to be used for: 4 pics of my fam and I, all from the same location, all from the same camera, all taken in quick succession. I used it to pick the best face of each of us and it failed miserably.. I could have done it just as quickly in Photoshop with a 100X better outcome. Sorry guys, good try, but get back to work..
- kwreid, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1Tried it on exactly a scenario that this tool was built for. A series of about 10 photos of a bunch of moms and kids lined up. I knew I was going to have a problem with finding a single photo that had everyone looking forward at the same time, and I looked forward to having to do my own manual cut&paste in an image editing tool.
Then I remembered I saw this on Digg. So I downloaded it and tried it out.
Man does it suck.
I don't know what it thinks it's doing, but whenever i select a region of a picture that's good and tell it to use that region, it undoes the last region I did this for. Go back to the research lab and finish it off. Heck, I'll get my own intern/co-ops to do it and they'll likely finish in an afternoon. - t3hX, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Tried it on VPC. It sucks. Lame.
- rhyno2000, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Dupe (I was going to submit but refrained when I *saw the original post*)

Misleading and inaccurate headline

Kinda lame software (looks like a neat idea, but there's a reason it's still in "research")

What's wrong with Digg...
C'mon people! I'm not trying to flame here, just trying to make it a better place. - nstern2, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Or I could launch photoshop and do the same thing and actually say I photoshopped it.
- spacemonkeyx, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0This is what I imagine the planet Solaris in the sci-fi novel looking like. Very cool stuff.
- djhifisi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Looks cool. Don't know how useful, but kind of fun.
- accidental, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Sort of misrepresent what the tool does. You make it sound like you can take pics of 4 people, run this tool and it makes them look like they were all in the same pic. They actually all HAVE to be in the same picture for it to work.
- SpacemanSpiff, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Screenshots are here: http://research.microsoft.com/projects/GroupShot/GroupShotHelp.htm
I am thinking it was not a random choice to use two people who both have long blonde hair. - Jolene, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Note to submitter: Its not "photoshopping" unless your using Photoshop. ; )
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0cool, but i'm not sure how it'd perform in real life
- kodek, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0"It's also old news."
What a retard. It's only 2 days old. How can this be "old news"? - jjustice, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0This gets a digg purely for the fact that the name of one company's product has become so prevalent that it's used to describe another company's product :-)
- miker71, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Anyone who's watched the extras on The Phantom Menace DVD knows that this was done waaay back then, and on moving images.
no digg. - lgc90, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0This is sort of related to those cameras that have the built in facial detecting feature to make sure everyone in the shot is smiling, not blinking, etc, except that is in the camera.
- lazyguy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Used it on a old picture, loved it.
- minitechnik, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0oh wait - its on the front now because of the words TOOL and PHOTOSHOP including MICROSOFT - i understand ! so let me summarize the words FREE and MS only doesn't do it, alright ? :
http://digg.com/software/MS_Freeware_for_manipulating_group_photos - replica, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Tried it. Loved it. Thank MS.
- aoeu2, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Somebody spank this fool. Mis-leading Digg article titles are one of my top pest peeves of digg.com. Where is the option of reporting this story as "Bad Title?"
- capajc, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Wow, this post had a bad description.
- supergwiz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0dugg b/c Google has forced M$ to be pay more attention to their research areas
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0whats a photoshop?
lamesky - Randude, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I used it on two shots of my sons and it worked great! I wonder what other interesting things are to be found in the downloads section...
- wirjo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Awesome stuff :D
- MrMysterious, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Wait, I can't find the uninstall, where the hell is it?
- Udon, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Mr. Simpson, I don’t know what part of that sentence to correct first.
- GamerSmurf, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Thanks for a free tool, Microsoft! (Don't complain at free stuff dumbasses)
- thehank, on 10/12/2007, -5/+3Leave it to Microsoft lemmings to rave about this POS.
- snapya, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0This is cool!
- JAWS, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1I just tried it. It sucks. I completely agree with Larakin. I'd produce a MUCH better result had I used photoshop. This tool is cumbersome and leaves terrible artifacts all over the screen.
- seanzo, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Really useful if you have a series of shots that look exactly the same except for 1 thing in each shot that you want to remove. I find myself in that situation *all* the time... microsoft innovating again.
- JAFFA, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0Surely ANY graphics app can achieve the same results? Even with a limited knowledge! ............ And Gimp is free!
- StevePJobs, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1Install Microsoft software on my computer? You must be joking.
- Thujone, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0Wow.
- joel.smith, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0neat
- REpler, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0Do I need to own PhotoShop for this to work?
No? You're just an idiot, submitter? Thanks. - TomP, on 10/12/2007, -6/+2Wow that tool sucks :S As if I am going to have 2 pictures exactly the same
No digg
- Tom | http://www.tomwrote.info - dextroz, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2reel-life is a fukin bitch!
I wanna go home! :-( - OandA, on 10/12/2007, -5/+0Anyone want to post a screenshot of what this does. I'm on a mac so its not i can try this out.
Thanks.
