Unless you plan to hurt your eyes really badly, I don't suggest to replace all lighting with LED. LED is the reverse operation of solar cell. One thing you might not know about solar cell is that they can only convert visible light into electricity (ie. the frequency of light wave is fixed); LED on the other hand, can only emit light at a fixed frequency. That's why most LED has only one color, and that's why (well.. not entirely) LED is energy efficient. Recall from high school physics: white color (ie. the thing you want for lighting).... is a mixed color. A common way to produce white color is actually to place 3 LED (Red, Green and Blue) very closely, and put in one package. So, basically the energy consumption is roughly tripled. Also, obviously, when looking at spectrum of the "white" LED, you see 3 spike (that is, essentially there's only 3 color) along visible spectrum, which is far away from true white. There're tones of other problem with LED, that I personally wouldn't wanna use them for lighting. (light angle being one of them)
There're some research worth waiting though. From what I heard, some Phd dude put a laser on quantum dot solar cell (state-of-art new solar cell, seems it can be sold in bottle and spary on any surface), and it gives pure white light. - LewsTherin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I love the block/report button

Happy New Year, everyone - uthaman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0You would think Digg could block all the spam they have been getting lately.... But, I do love the block/report option!
- kungfustickman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yeah, so do I. Good thing digg is developing more anti spam features.
- jumjum, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm glad Bloomberg is a billionaire, because those bulbs seem to cost around $20 each, compared to $8 for CFLs & 50 cents for incandescents. At one time LED bulbs were $65 each. (the energy savings justify buying a CFL {I have 20} but $20 is too "high-end").
- ipodman715, on 10/12/2007, -0/+05 hours left here in the east! :P

lol ditto - Bloc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0happy new year. i think london officially pwnd sydney.
- wilf_brim, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0CFLs save energy, but good god, they are hard on the eyes. I'd happily change my entire house to LED if I could.
- Gargot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I guess they skipped the CFLs (compact fluorescent lights)...
- Gargot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0wilf: Have you tried recent CFLs? Old one had pretty crappy light quality (either red or green, etc). But I find the new ones (with electronic ballasts - they light immediately) to be better on the eyes than incandescents.
- Bostonsox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"LEDs are part of the growing solid-state lighting category, which is set to revolutionize the lighting industry, offering dramatic reductions in both electricity consumption and costs."
How much did is cost to light the ball for 1 night a year? - Bloc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0at fireworks that is.
- Detour, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wow, this is the very first newstory of the year that should be filed in the "I don't give a *****" category.
- iakie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@forgeflow
1. I never said ALL white LED are produced that way.
2. one example of red green and blue LEDs would be here. (http://www.nichia.co.jp/specification/led_lamp/NSPL500S.pdf) ya, I know it's a Full color one instead a white only.
3. True, I used a bad example there.... but you can't say all of my statment is 100% incorrect. So, the statement that my statement is 100% incorrect is in fact incorrect.
- forgeflow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0white LEDs are actually ultraviolet LEDs with a flourescent layer over the emitter. It is this layer that actually produces the white light. The poster who said it was red green and blue LEDs in one package is 100% incorrect.
- eclectro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Back at you all digg buddies with Happy New Year :D :D :D
As another poster pointed out, the vast majority of LEDs are bright blue/near uv ones coated with white phospher. The problem is that they are not full spectrum like sunlight. Incandescents can be hard on the eye to read by because of the large content of red. Halogens are a little bit better. Newer flourescents are probabley easiest on the eyes i.g. the happy eyes reading lights. Bell and Howell makes a perfect knockoff that you can find at Shopko for $70 or less and uses standard bulbs that the newer Happy Eye lamps don't. I spent twice as much for a Happy Eyes lamp.
There really needs to be more full-spectrum light bulb developments. But I do not think it will be LEDs as they have a number of shortcomings.
Also, it is not clear in the article if they are going to use just LEDs or something else supposedly "solid state." - bubba9999, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0too bad your mom didn't say the same to your dad.
this is cool! - thewordwasgod, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Philips will light the New Year's Ball with solid-state or LEDs. "
hmmm solid-state or LEDs
poor quality writeup - linker3000, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I am surprised it isn't all LEDs already
- n0other, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Happy new year!

Well, gee, Phillips is an international corporation worth billions of dollars. I'm sure they'll scrape the money together somehow. - Victr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Neat.

- oldcyborg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Personally, I love the Halogen lights. You know, the ones you can't get the bulb for. The bulbs are nearly $7.00, and they self destruct due to giant heat output. They turn the ceramic ends brittle, and they finally just fall off, shorting the bulb out. They also char the copper contacts so that eventually, you have to take a nail file to them to get contact.
BUT!!! The light is phenomenol to read, or work on computers by. Very little shadow, and almost no distortion.
They just never conquered the Heat, and burned down a bunch of peoples houses, dogs and all. Cats knocked them over, but that usually breaks them. hehehe
LED's. In my view, the jury still out. Altho I love the lower power drain...
Cyborg
Phillips is still my list over tv tuner programs... - nannerla, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0most people say cfls hurt theyre totally wrong. CFL's only hurt ure eyes if u use the ***** ass 1's u get from a hardware store if u use 1's designed for aquuariums and mix up the color spredtrum it look amazing ive got it in my room and I have a pattern of them it look real nice ive got some actinictics some full sprectrums some 50/50s 12000k and some others and it looks like a sunny day
- hdherndon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0RE: forgeflow, iakie
Modern cheap white LEDs are BLUE emitters covered with a phosphor that converts some of that blue to yellow, giving you a pretty good white light.
The main problem with LED lighting is once you consider the narrow emitting angle, they are in fact less efficient than most halogen lamps and all florescent lamps for general illumination.
However, for focused task lighting, and in applications where you would use an incandescent lamp behind a colored filter, hence filtering out most of the light it produces, an LED solution can be much more efficient.
Back to this story: I can't see the LED lighting actually saving an appreciable amount of energy, since, as 'Bostonsox' said: "How much did is cost to light the ball for 1 night a year?" -- but it may open possibilities for a more vibrantly colored Ball... or something. - TheNik, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Does Digg have an email auth thing? I can't remember.
Also--This is cool, now the ball will look like a bugzapper. :O - Half-Fast, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It would be nice to win one of those bulbs they're giving away. Ebay, here I come.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Led is the future :)
