- mewp, on 01/11/2009, -0/+29You know what would be funny, if Google joined the recorded TV business.
- anubis2night, on 01/11/2009, -3/+25If TiVo really wanted to be the "Google" of T.V. this is what they need to do:
1. Make it free
2. Feature rich and simple
3. Find a way to make it profitable without an assload of ad's littering the screen. - crazlunatic, on 01/11/2009, -2/+22Google's doing so much now. I'm surprised they haven't fallen into the trap of expanding into too many areas too quickly.
Does anyone know how they make money other than Adsense and possibly enterprise solutions for search? - sparkplug890, on 01/12/2009, -0/+10just like Cuil wanted to be the Google of the Internet?
- SpykerSpeed, on 01/12/2009, -1/+9Someone make an Adblock Plus for TV.
- ChinezePanda, on 01/12/2009, -0/+8is and already happened on my TiVo
- ChinezePanda, on 01/12/2009, -1/+7Suweet. I have been waiting for an update to the swivel search for a long time. Good to see they are working to improve an already good system.
- Jrr6415sun, on 01/12/2009, -0/+6or a pause button....
- inactive, on 01/12/2009, -0/+6This Video has been removed due to a DMCA notice.
- donkeyqong, on 01/12/2009, -0/+6Most of those are premium content AND the "swivel search" in mind numbingly slow. You can't save YouTube and to find something is tedious at best. Tivo is the best there is available and there is a TON of room for competitors to move in and replace them.
- drtitanium0, on 01/12/2009, -0/+6Too bad Google is already the Google of everything.
- MikeFromAmerica, on 01/12/2009, -0/+5TV Guide? You're hilarious. TV Guide is the AOL of TV (or at best, the Yahoo).
- datacowboy, on 01/12/2009, -1/+6DVR technology has completely disrupted the TV advertising business model. How can you accurately place a value on any time slot, aside from live sports events, and then expect companies to just line up and pay whatever the broadcasters ask for that slot?
If the content is not extremely popular, or it's not a live event, you can bet a big chunk of viewers are TiVo'ing or DVR'ing that content and then blitzing through the commercials. So what is the real value of that time slot during Grey's Anatomy, or whatever?
I find it very interesting that TiVo wants to be the Google of TV. TiVo is the only DVR maker that is actually developing and marketing advertising solutions that work in a DVR world. Interactive tags, showcases, order pizza through your TiVo. They are working on repairing what DVR usage has broken. But don't get me wrong. I've owned TiVo units since 2000, and would never consume TV without one.
I think if Google has an ambitions at all in taking their ad business to TV, they will have to work with TiVo in the least. At the most, they could just buy TiVo. As one poster wrote, this would 1. enable it to be free, 2. feature rich and simple, and 3. keep the ads from being intrusive.
If I was on the broadcast side of things, I'd be pretty concerned about the generic DVRs out there that offer NO advertising solution. All DVRs are not TiVo, but all DVR usage behavior is equivalent. The generic DVR is a downstream business tool that is starving the upstream, content producing business. - ObamaYouth, on 01/12/2009, -0/+5I have 70 channels and nothing is on them.
- ehaugan, on 01/12/2009, -5/+10Tivo wants to be the "Google" of TV but can't even figure out how to turn a profit without completely bombing my Tivo with ads.
I just paid $700 for my TivoHD plus lifetime service and the bastards still bombard my Tivo with ads to order a Dominos pizza or join the army all from the comfort of my own living room.
And can someone please explain to them that the "popup ads" they place on the brinks and other commercials are the worst idea ever? Asking someone to press thumbs up to view a SECOND COMMERCIAL of the current commercial you are watching is hardly a way to get new customers.
/rant. - donkeyqong, on 01/12/2009, -0/+5Tivo has NetFlix. Works just fine.
- ronmojohny, on 01/12/2009, -4/+8HD Tivo rocks, the cable companies DVR's don.t compare

Tivo 2 Go
Let's see the other boxes do all that stuff - bkemper, on 01/12/2009, -0/+4Seriously? You've just helped me decide to never get a Tivo. When I pause, it is often in order to see something in the freezeframe. I hate it when there is a bunch of crap covering it up.
- Anpheus, on 01/12/2009, -1/+5They do, I find all my recorded television on Youtube ;)
- nbcaffeine, on 01/12/2009, -0/+4@TheSabre
Oh yeah, it happens during prerecorded shows too. That's all I use my tivo (S2dt) for, and it pisses me off. It has only been around a month or so, must've been a new update. Thanks for the new "features" tivo. - TheSabre, on 01/12/2009, -1/+5I have a Tivo Series 2, so I'm not sure if you get this or not. But I really hate when I pause a show and they put all kinds of "Learn more about 24" links all over the screen and stuff like that. I didn't mind the ads when they were limited to the Tivo screens or when they were integrated with the commercials... but now that Tivo is putting ads onto the screen during the show (even if it is just on the pause screen), that's just not cool.
- inactive, on 01/12/2009, -0/+4It's called "the inter-torrents"
- krakelohm, on 01/12/2009, -0/+3yea... just somewhat.
- SusanCopp, on 01/12/2009, -0/+3we need ads so we can go get a snack :)
- pe5t1lence, on 01/12/2009, -0/+3Isn't TV guide the google of TV?
- rubbish86, on 01/12/2009, -0/+3Either way step 3 is always profit
- zbeast, on 01/12/2009, -0/+3I use to be a tivo user, I really see no reason to own one anymore.
I can put that $14.00 dollars a month to better use.
I have tv over my internet connection.. U-Verse. I get a free pvr from them.
I have a HTPC hooked to my big screen for everything else. Usenet, torrents, emule, netflix, veoh... etc.
More functionality, no drm and more function for less money. - inactive, on 01/12/2009, -2/+5TiVo is never going to come back. The only real reason I had it was for DVR, and now since I have FioS, my multi-room DVR is all I need.
Plus I have Netflix on my 360, and let me tell you, "Watch Instantly" is amazing. - Lazydriver, on 01/12/2009, -0/+3They sell professional version of their products. IE, Sketch UP Pro which goes for about $600 and can be used by architects. They can also make money from G-Mail for Corporate Clients, who wish more then 7GB of space. Let us not forget Picassa - the photo albums there rake in subscription fees. We finally have Google Earth Pro, used by clients such as CNN or likely your local news stations.
That's how. They reel in their clients by offering a good free experience and then having them tell their friends that the product in question was good, and efficient, and they end up eventually working their way to being used in entire businesses with nifty features businesses would find useful. - pak314, on 01/12/2009, -0/+3It doesn't help that there is nothing to watch on TV anyone.
- dandonia, on 01/12/2009, -0/+3You say that without even seeing a product. What if it were totally *****.
- MikeFromAmerica, on 01/12/2009, -0/+3I think this might be cable system-dependent because very few of the shows I record are copy restricted. In particular, The Daily Show is not restricted for me.
- tolerant, on 01/12/2009, -0/+3Want a DVR that *YOU* control, not the media companies? It's not TiVo and you can not get it from your cable company. It is 100% legal, handles HD, multiple tuners, multiple locations, your video, your music, has no advertising (paused or otherwise), has no DRM what-so-ever, performs automatic commercial flagging (and skipping), has no monthly fee (optional low cost schedule download available), completely free, supports themes and plugins, etc, etc, etc.
MythTV: http://www.mythtv.org/
I have a TiVo with a lifetime subscription but am also a very happy MythTV user. While TiVo's moves over time have been more and more self-serving, closed and bent on appeasing media companies, Myth has evolved into an extremely powerful DVR focused solely on what you want. You can add it to an existing PC, build a dedicated DVR box, or even buy it preconfigured. - consciousman, on 02/23/2009, -0/+3Internet is the future of TV, so, I''m not surprise on the move by TVO part
- MikeFromAmerica, on 01/12/2009, -0/+3You do realize that MythTV (and anything other than TiVo, cable company DVR, or Windows MCE) is not CableCARD compatible. All you will get is Clear QAM channels (which is usually just your local broadcast stations) and possibly some of the old 480i digital channels. (Well, and anything analog but those will be gone from even cable soon enough.)
BTW, I'm assuming you're in the US. - rukkyg, on 01/12/2009, -0/+3Technically, you have to pay $20/yr (not month) for schedulesdirect.org.
Also, there are plenty of HD cards for linux. Check the pc 5500 HDTV from http://www.pchdtv.com/, which I've been using for over a year.
I'm waiting for the drivers on the Hauppauge 2250 to be supported. It's a dual tuner supporting ATSC and NTSC as well as analog support (with only one coax connection required, like tivo and cable boxes) - 2uantuM, on 01/12/2009, -0/+3Can you give me some links to a tuner that works with HD from a cable company (not over the air!) that works in linux.
There are very few cards out there that support this. - Scott2, on 01/12/2009, -0/+2Thank God I got rid of my Tivo before that all started.
- TheSabre, on 01/12/2009, -0/+2It might only be if you pause during the actual showing. I don't know if it does it on a show you watch later.
- UselessTrivia, on 01/12/2009, -0/+2I don't have access to FiOS, but even if I did, we'd probably have to hack it to install a terrabyte hard drive. Also we occassionally record 3 shows at once.
- inactive, on 01/12/2009, -2/+4It will never happen because...
Google = fast
TiVo = so goddamn slow - ehaugan, on 01/12/2009, -0/+2I haven't seen that yet but I will keep an eye out for it. I watched 24 about an hour after it started and didnt notice any extra- annoying ads like you just described.
- inactive, on 01/12/2009, -1/+3I just hope they can expand it to where if a commercial for a show comes on, I can hit thumbs up and it will schedule to record it. That would be awesome.
- Murdats, on 01/12/2009, -1/+3why? google owns its successor.
- krakelohm, on 01/12/2009, -0/+2I just recently got a Tivo HD with cable card and I have not had any problems, so YMMV.
- inactive, on 01/12/2009, -0/+2Not enough channels with Myth.
- jamshid, on 01/12/2009, -1/+3Tivo2Go is USELESS, folks, stop advertising that as a Tivo feature. Almost every show is copy-protected (not just HBOHD, even the Daily Show on Comedy Central), so it can't be downloaded. Also downloading is extremely slow, even over ethernet.
- dalesmatrix, on 01/13/2009, -0/+2I found that there's 70 channels with nothing on them when you sit down to watch...but there's usually something in the last 24 hours worth watching somewhere on one of those channels. Thats where Tivo comes in.
- ptm1, on 01/12/2009, -0/+2would not surprise me, and i would totally go for it.
- frieddonuts, on 01/15/2009, -0/+1This is why I use Windows Media Center.
