- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -8/+26If your little sis is over 18 then I got a little unsecured wifi camera you could use... Hell, if you don't want her I could find loads of stuff to do with her.
- pavelich, on 10/12/2007, -0/+17Well that's nice that the microphone is small but it is attached to a GOD DAMN AA BATTERY. That's like saying you have the greatest hair piece in the world and then the guy turns around and there a midget on his back holding it on. It just doesn't make sense.
- rickbar, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11not to be too picky but 1x1mm aint no where near "microscopic", how bout we just say its small...
- BESTenemy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Having this tiny mike run off an AA battery is like having a car battery powered iPod.
- mwebb1984, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8They might as well have named it XSDE? xtra super damn expensive
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -9/+16uhh that's ok call me when she's 18
How hot is your mom? - cheesy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7and it's definitely not microscopic once you slap a AA battery on it...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9Its 499$ and when the Battery Dies you have to throw it away?
Just buy a PS3 and leave the drug dealers alone. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5These have been in the back of popular science and popular mechanics magazines for YEARS.
- TomRitchford, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Uh.... guys.... it's a hoax. "The transmitters have two models, differing on the battery that it uses. The XSDT-ALK runs on a single AA alkaline battery for 38 minutes. On the other hand, the XSDT-LITH runs, as you may have already guessed, on a lithium battery. This second version has a longer operational time of 1 hour and 15 minutes.
While the unit’s name renders approvingly on its size and function, you might curse it for another reason. Due to the fact that the unit is soldered on the battery, the unit becomes another item on your trash bin once the battery runs out.
The XSDT-ALK sells for US $499, while the XSDT-LITH is priced at US $699."
A one-use microphone that records for 90 minutes for $700... must be a prank. (Particularly considering how the power is bigger than the mic -- of course, in a real unit, there'd be a *plug* and a cable you could replace...) - greenbox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5yeah, if an undercover cop was wearing that thing on himself a drug dealer could probably still see it in his pocket or something. still it be nice to get one of those.
- ocbeta, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I don't know how useful a tiny microphone is. The CIA have been doing things a bit better for years. They can actually detect sound through glass.
"The American intelligence agencies have used lasers to detect conversations. From a distance outside, they would shine a small, invisible laser spot on a window of a building where secret conversations where being held. The reflected light off the window would be distorted due to the subtle vibrations of the glass from the conversations inside the room.
The device would detect the reflected light and convert it into electrical signals."
http://www.school-for-champions.com/science/sounddetect.htm - Bifurcati, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Honestly, that's really impressive that we can make a mic that's only 1mm x 1mm, but when it's attached to a whopping big AA battery - who cares? I could just as easily use a mic bought from Radio Shack/Dick Smiths which has about the same diameter as the battery. Yes, I guess it's useful for poking through holes or something like that, but it seems kind of over rated!
- ween14, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Hahaha. If you go to the company's website for this product, http://www.lectrosonics.com/PressReleases/xsdt/xsdt.htm, you will see that this product was "released" on Saturday. Funny how everyone else seemed to miss that so far.
This was one of the best April Fools jokes I saw this year, mainly because it was subtle enough that people fell for it. :) - pavelich, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2ahah yeah i like your analogy better than my hairpiece/midget one.
- burke, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I would say more like a diesel-generator-powered iPod, but yes, I see your point.
- lilazndrumrboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2well, if this was an actual product and not an april fool's joke, then this would actually be perfect for a DIY mod turning an acoustic guitat -> acoustic-electric guitar.........versus electrostatic but at least those have easily replacable battery slots..........just a thot.......
- stokestack, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This is absolutely asinine. The mic is the size of a AA battery, DUH. And you're supposed to throw away $500 every hour?
What a crock. How tough would it have been to make a .2mm-thick metal clip to attach the mic to the battery instead of soldering it? Not tough at all. - jaybones1515, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2A 1x1mm mic soldered onto a huge battery? I just invented a "microscopic" 1X1mm spy cam that solders to three D-cell batteries. It runs for 15 seconds (full color!) and then you throw it away. By the way, its only 1500 dollars.
Why didnt they use a watch battery instead? - Stopher, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2You should just submit the laser mic. It's a much better digg than this lame one.
- Megamo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This was a april fools joke guys.
http://groups.google.com/group/rec.arts.movies.production.sound/browse_frm/thread/fea6f076a389c151?hl=en - theman8631, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I called april fools as a guess. I win stupid
- enveloop, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It´s undobtedly a joke, but it was taken for real in many sites. I wrote an article about it (I myself thought it was a real microphone for a while!):
http://www.envelooponline.com/nan/archives/the-worlds-smallest-microphone-for-sure - nanoage, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3A person could easily desolder the microphone from the battery and solder it to a new battery but the price is still outrageous.
- kd5ftn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Response down to 5hz huh? I bet.
For a real small microphone that definately doesn't sound like crap, check out the Countryman B6. It's a pretty sweet mic that's tiny.

This mic is a common choice for film/television in situations in which a regular microphone just can't be hidden. - knoxindy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i dont think it would be to difficult solder a new battery on. but i dont have one so i could be wrong.
- Virg, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2... no digg, no buy, no mic - NO REAL PRODUCT!
sometimes it's just amazing how fast people want to comment on something and therefore miss out the whole progress everybody else made (such as discovering that this anouncement was an April fool's joke).
but just for the sake of it; it sounded like a really crappy idea... - mpeters13, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1funny april fools, but did anyone else find the name eXtra-Super-Damn-Stupid? Because i'm sure we're bound to see some company rip this awesome idea :p
- sapo916, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Better luck next time designers.
- Justus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2They want me to spend $499, use it for 38 minutes, and throw it out? No thanks, no digg, no buy, no mic.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Um, it's dated April 3. But it might as well be April fools, it's retarded and way too expensive.
- namit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Think of the possibilities
- kd5ftn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Lectrosonics is actually an awesome maker of tiny microphones and wireless transmitters. Best known for their SM (Super Miniature) digital-hybrid wireless mic: http://www.lectrosonics.com/hybrid/sm/sm.htm
It can actually be remotely configured and there's even a model that sports a SD-based "backup" recorder. - sambeau, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0$500 for a disposable microphone???
Spying ain't cheap! - scinju, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0The mic is incredibly tiny, and while not "microscopic" as stated above, it would definetely serve its purpose for a cop or something. This, concealed in a button or a hidden pocket or something is definetely going to be more subtle than a wire and a mic taped to your chest. But the soldered in battery, is that really going to stop that many people? All its causing them is bad publicity to anyone who knows how to use a soldering iron.
- sourcemonkey, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0"oh she's 7 but I'll let you mess around with her don't worry about that."
HAHA! very funny, arsehole. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1You have to throw out the unit once the battery runs out? What kind of retard designed this thing? I think the only people who will buy this will be the CIA
- Lightguy911, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0A much better choice than the countryman mic would be a mini by DPA
http://www.dpamicrophones.com/
this is the high end of mini mic for stage a screen at about 500 USD - ntrsfrml, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Pricey....
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -8/+6I would so like to use this on my little sister she always listens on my phone conversations without me knowing
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -17/+12oh she's 7 but I'll let you mess around with her don't worry about that.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -16/+10you dirty little boy
I'd do the same :x
