- GarethSaxby, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Really interesting to see how poorly some countries implement web filtering systems. I guess we should be glad to have access to everything... Well, to an extent.
- Mysk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That's just horrible, and this is the nonsense that they want to make the entire Internet into. I shiver at the thought.
+digg - ZerozenOnes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yeah, sorry to brake your bubble folks but the current climate of galvanized patriotism in the US is not exactly the best kind of soil for freedom of expression. When people think through the filters of God and Country, well anything they say or do has very little chance of being rational. Still, so far its going pretty well, I can't say that I feel any limitation whatsoever in my cyber meandering.
Anyway, what I was actually wondering is whether it would be technologically possible to remove the very possibility of such filtering for a government.
My knowledge of the superstructure of the Internet is quite limited but wouldn't there be a way to thinker with "the system" so that such censorship could not be imposed, even with significant resources investment ( like say, US government kind o' resources ). Now THAT is something that would be a significant contribution to "freedom and democracy" worldwide... better than tossing bombs at people anyway...
Or, alternatively, how easy would it be for some well determined hacker group to attack the computer system of a country like Tunis and "free the people", if only temporarily. I also don't know squat about computer hacking as you can see... - azar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I used to live in Tunis, Tunisia. What a beautiful place :)
- Boondoggle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"The country is TUNISIA not TUNIS."
Tunis is the capital city of Tunisisa you arrogant smartass retard... sigh - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If you actually look in to the facts, Orange, you'll find that Mr. Gore had more to do with getting the internet to where it is today than most people know.
It was because of funding that he helped push through that got the internet to be this public thing, instead of only for the government.
Make sure you know what you're talking about next time, m'kay? - MaggieL, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1A 404 page doesn't imply a server doesn't exist, by the way. After all, something had to serve it.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1this has absolutely nothing to do with the us controlling the internet. read this:

please let's not all shout "god bless america" in chorus. - Ejay, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"This happens in the UK where BT censors the internet."
"Er... What?"
BT's motivations are a little more honourable:
"Pierre Danon, chief executive of BT Retail, added: 'You are always caught between the desire to tackle child pornography and freedom of information. But I was fed up with not acting on this and always being told that it was techically impossible.'"
http://technology.guardian.co.uk/online/news/0,12597,1232506,00.html - unknownsoldier, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0In the UK BT ONLY censors pedophile related sites and nothing else I believe
Nothing else atm. Why would they bother censoring http for pedos if it wasn't for other things. Think about it: usenet is still available as is p2p. They are using the pedo line to have an excuse to create the infrastructure. - Nik420, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0funny - there was exactly 404 diggs when I saw this
- shiftless, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Er... What?"
BT is a big broadband provider in the UK. - ForbesBingley, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"god bless america."
I wouldn't go that far.
American press is also answerable to a degree with regards to what's permissible via reporting and coverage.
From what I've been reading, there has been some high-handed, government-sanctioned censorship to certain disparaging articles on Curious George over the past two / three years... - puny_midget, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Surely there cant be that many pedo's in the UK to give the government an excuse to censor the net? I mean...thats just crazy...and sick.
- ZerozenOnes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"wouldn't there be a way to thinker with "the system" so that such censorship could not be imposed, even with significant resources investment ( like say, US government kind o' resources )"
Quoting myself here but just wanted to specify that what I mean is: would the US gov. have the resources to restructure the Internet in such a way as to make it censor-proof( not that we should protect the net from the US gov... ) ? - npiv, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0ah yes, but that wouldnt be sensational journalim now would it ;)
- johnsto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I look forward to seeing Government-controlled whitelists, such that access to only certain sites (as approved by the Government) is permitted. If you want your site to be accessible, or a new page on your site, you will need to fill in the appropriate application form.
Only that way can we protect the world from the obscenities and human suffering the WWW forces upon its users. - CaptSnuffy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I think its good that a ISP is filtering pedo sites, I just dont think governments should be able to filter, and i don't think ISPs should filter anything that isnt illegal to look at. Anyway plenty of hax0rz deface pedo sites for moral reasons, so you can help out and join the fight too.
- npiv, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0zerozenOnes, youre understanding of the problem is limited. You don't need to tinker with the system, the internet is made as a web so there are always alternative routes. The problem arises when you as a 'small fry" access the internet via an ISP. They are your single connection to the internet and have opportunity to place a filter.
- davidmccabe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If you know anyone in a country that implements Internet censorship, do a noble deed and give them access to to the Circumventor program available here:
http://peacefire.org/ - Raisin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0how do you know we're not looking at fake pages that our governments set up so we can't know the Truth?
- unknownsoldier, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This happens in the UK where BT censors the internet.
- TopDog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0In the UK BT ONLY censors pedophile related sites and nothing else I believe
- jacksbox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I can't decide if the internet would be in worse shape with US control or UN control.
As it is, we have the ??AA org's who have a lot of power over the internet, not to mention whatever Hilary Clinton is spewing. And then the UN could do equally silly things like software patents... - orangetiki, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0God Bless America? Wern't you the same guys who were getting on the DOJ for not prosecuting Sony?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0There is no feasible way to fight a good censor(for a good reason, since they are being developed by Microsoft and Google). I have been trying to fight the censor in China. It can't be done. When you use proxy servers, the "word censor" kicks in. Whatever proxy server you are using, you are still going thru Chinese network backbone, they will censor words at the backbone level. As soon as they catch a forbidden word, your proxy server is blocked for at least a few weeks before your ip range can use it again. Of course when you do not use a proxy server, then the questionable website is just blocked to your ip range. Then there is the "black-list" of thousands sites that are permanently blocked to the whole country, which includes CNN and BBC. The only way I can think of to fight censor, is that every single website should use 128bit SSL secure mode for every single page, I don't think they can filter encrypted webpages. But apparently only e-commerce related websites use SSL.
- ZerozenOnes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0npiv. My understanding of this matter is admitedly very limited, hence the question: Is there anything, technologically, that we can do about this from out here ?
- ifonly, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0cool proxy site .. will get past filter:
http://www.hidemyass.com - Eyot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Uh.. Whats the point in doing that?
- genrebusters, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Which internet are they censoring? Because the internets we use here are not blocked at all. Maybe those Tasmanian Devils should use our internets?
- freonchill, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0but i already get 404's on a lot of sites...
hehe - davidmccabe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0kokojie:
Because of the word censoring you mention, and because cryptography attracts suspicion and may be illegal in many countries, Peacefire uses simple content scrambling. - orangetiki, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Immagine then then internet at the hands of The UN, Although I would trust Annan over Bush any day. Or more yet that one ex president who claimed he made the internet. Who was that again?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Do you think if the US gov ever were to block websites they would tell you about it...
- Yoshi39, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Avoding filtering by anyone is as easy as 123 all you need is a proxy or if your to lazy to find one just use http://hidemyass.com/
- jumjum, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It will never cease to amaze me how dumb and morally bankrupt some foreign leaders in this world system are. For God's sakes, get educated and listen to your conscience.
- lampy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0We still have a giant filter problem in the US in regards to libraries and schools. A student with a computer at home won't have to worry about filters when doing research, but at school the filters are pretty bad. I remember in high school, that doing research on breast cancer was impossible, but I didn't really have a hard time breaking the filter for when I wanted to have fun and show my friends sick or funny pictures. So we do have government filters, but in our case it prevents those in our schools or libraries from getting the real content they are looking for.
- Kriz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Scary.
- cyran0, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yes, god bless the US. I'm an American, but you should be aware that google, yahoo and msn filter results for the United States. We don't get the same results that google.ca or foreign search engines provide other countries. But we can still get to those sites... that's something at least.
here's an explanation http://www.sethf.com/anticensorware/general/google-censorship.php - Vektuz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0actually, they just add hidemyass to the filter and you're back to square one.
gotta start to learn to use tor nodes. Although, those are added to the filter list too.
in the end, you just gotta learn to use a satellite dish, pointing at a non-country-that-is-filtering satellite...
And then they come to take your dish away. - Pooavenger, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1god bless america.
- kinobe, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0The country is TUNISIA not TUNIS.
*sigh* - gregcotten, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Ughh.... God Bless America
- gregcotten, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0^^ By that I meant that I'm thankful the US doesn't block websites from us.
- thisnameisfake, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Just be thankful the US is still in control of the Internet. Unless you like UN branded filter software.
- fani, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0USA Rocks !!!!
God bless America.
