- kylerk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This could be one of the next big things, just like digg cloud makes the important stuff evident, this make the important stuff really clear. Amazing
- kawai, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Sotta similar to Google news visualizer:
http://www.marumushi.com/apps/newsmap/newsmap.cfm - isasusinfinite, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Mengus: Surely I like the idea.
In the current incarnation (ie. the page we're in the comments from) it seems to be only major news outlet's news that is aggregated. Also, the resolution is pretty small, with each dot being far larger than ideal. (Well... the whole thing has a certain aesthetic 'feel' about it, and the large dots surely contribute to the coolness factor)
Having people/blogs associated with location and showing pop-ups on something like google earth would be absolutely heaven, allowing people to communicate about their with location inherent in the medium (as it is in RL.) Of course, we'll need some sort of filter/moderation system, with each blog entry being 'tagged' with content, purpose, and category metadata (and some way to block explicit/defamatory/griefer comments.)
A slider to allow you to advance/back-up the temporal state, and, of course, a real-time mode, giving you an overview of the entire world with new entries popping up in some fashion.
I love the idea of a globally connected news medium.
Make it so.
. . . . . . . - mengus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1this is like an idea I've proposed to google but they have implemented it very poorly or didn't care and found their own ideas and implemented them [which were poor :)] to google earth. the idea was "collective history".
the main thing was, you connect rss feeds from supporting sites to the map and see things as they happen as placemarks on google earth. moreover, you can add historical data too. i thought it could be fun to see the places that historic wars or events took place.
and one more thing, apart from the news sites' news, there can be something like wikinews, where users blog on things that happened near them. like, you see a car accident, take a picture, scribble a few lines and put it on the map for everyone to see.
do you know anything like this? if not is there anybody interested in developing this kind of stuff? or just basically, do you like the idea? :) - isasusinfinite, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Whoa! This is some awesome sheeyat.
This is to national distances as The Clock of the Long Now is to temporal consideration. It automatically makes people consider places they'd never otherwise consider.
This kind of unified, instantaneous, global communication of cultures is what will bring human thinking to the next, fully-integrative level. Considering all of humanity/terra when making decisions will soon become the norm, rather than the selfish, myopic world-views used by those in power at the moment.
Please spread memes of this type, and with it will come harmony, peace, and greater understanding to all. (... one day...)
. . - palillont, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1dugg! This is super cool stuff. Bet Google wishes it thought of it first, eh?
- johnmacintyre, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Very cool ... wish I had've thought of it.

- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wow, that's pretty damn awesome. Bit too random as it is... I still would prefer news I'm interested in first, location/time is kinda secondary.
And what the hell is that red dot above Alaska? Tried clicking on it, and nothing shows up ~:o| - CanuckMakem, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Friggin awesome find
- Waylander, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Amazing, nice find.
- ConEEE, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0That would make a pretty decent Dashboard/Konfabulator widget.
- ubuntuist, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Dugg to death already.
- theonlybigboss, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0good find corky!
- leodavinci, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Cool, only thing I didn't like was the Red Balloon that would pop up, but that was taken care of by simply hitting "off" on the radio button on the top left of the page.
- Cossins, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is cool. Too bad it's already really slow.
- Simon - muffutz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Pretty neat. But i think it would be even cooler to see that map on my desktop or screensaver.
- ProfHognutz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It seems healthy now, if slow.
Very cool. - frizzipazzi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It seem they had some problem in shaping the mediterranean regions...
- reets, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0never mind, it came up with something now that I refreshed a few times. looks neat now :D lol

its all ***** - peepott, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I assume it picks the most "relevant" article by the one that's hit the most per area. None the less a great idea. But still, you only get the selected big picture. But if that's the intent good stuff.
- DiggX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Great but is already dead
- flamingmonkey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0pity its dead, sounded interesting

- apotropaic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0hm... I'd like to see this with a better map! Maybe even google maps. To give you a satalite visual! That would be awesome.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0it's not doing anything for me, :(
- flyinpc, on 02/10/2009, -0/+0http://www.flash-video-mx.com/web-player-lite/
- zelig, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Interesting, worth a Digg, but is anyone else having problems getting some of the links to work?
- dreamkatcha, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0That's pretty slick. Am I right in thinking though that if you turn off the bubbles, nothing happens? I just get a red dot every so often that can't be clicked on to get to a story.
- reets, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1no digg. site does nothing but show the world and timezones for me. some wierd red bubble in the top left that also does nothing. where is the news?
- dreamkatcha, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Oh I see, it's working properly now.
- jla1987, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Definitely not working. I'll still digg it. Sounds cool.
- knightblade2oo4, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0That site has officially been Dwned
- SinnFeinster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Thank god for Morrie B. Longo, AKA Tyler Williams, star of Google video's "get me out of the attic" and "what osama bin laden does in his spare time"
- fiv3isaliv3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0http://www.jeroenwijering.com.nyud.net:8090/whatsup/
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Doesn't work in Firefox ... I've got the map in IE, but no news.
- kevets, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hmm all these google mash ups are cool for 30 seconds but as soon as a decent amount of people start viewing it, goes to crap. Yay.
- mdalurzo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Muy bueno!!
- azGFX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is an excellent way to keep up on current events.
