- Bricks, on 10/25/2007, -15/+694NEO: Whoa. Deja vu.
TRINITY: What did you just say?
NEO: Nothing. Just had a little deja vu.
TRINITY: What happened? What did you see?
NEO: I read a blog post, then at the end, I read the same post again.
TRINITY: How much alike was it? Was it copypasta?
NEO: It might have been. I'm not sure. What is it?
TRINITY: A deja vu is usually a glitch in the Blogosphere. It happens when you eat noobsauce. - stevealford, on 10/25/2007, -0/+78Just check out the history of bought items for the winning bidder of the $500k auction (from his feedback page).
http://feedback.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewFeedback2&ftab=AllFeedback&userid=v00d004sc0re&iid=-1&de=off&items=25&page=1
Am I the only one who thinks this is total *****? I'm basing it mostly on the facts that the guy who won it for $500k only bought metal/oldschool rap lp's and a boombox before this, the account was relatively new, the bid history was full of id's that look incredibly similar (no names or nickname id's like MOST ebayers have), and most importantly: the final auction had a starting bid of $1. Seriously, if the guy knew what he had there and that it was so valuable, why would he not have a minimum starting bid of AT LEAST a reasonable value? This is a ***** blogger who sold an item to himself as a typo'd listing, then resold it to himself at an astronomical price (which he won't have to pay since he won't report himself for failure to pay) all so he can plug the typo-checking site that he probably runs himself and make some money off of people who are too lazy to do multiple searches. Shenanigans has been called. - treelovinhippie, on 10/10/2007, -7/+75Best Digg Comment. Ever.
- Calculon, on 10/10/2007, -5/+72Sounds fishy... the original seller and the "finder" could be the same person and sold himself a 500k bottle of beer to get famous. Seems odd that someone would sell "the rarest bottle of beer" in the world by accident. But people get Picasso's at garage sales too.. who knows.
- wiifm69, on 10/10/2007, -3/+57I can almost hear his keyboard being smashed
- Sithely, on 10/10/2007, -7/+51Hmmm... I call BS on this one.
- Trax91, on 10/10/2007, -5/+47If I were the bidder, I'd quickly close down my eBay account, cancel my credit cards and move away. Just to avoid sending the bottle. C'mon its half a mil...
- azninvaznxx, on 10/10/2007, -0/+39i call shenanigans. this is probably some marketing ploy for page hits or to get us to use that auctionintelligence site that got plugged
- ZogDog, on 10/10/2007, -2/+41Comment dugg for clever reading before I read the actual article, then I read the article, and wished I could give your comment another digg for straight up being spot on... word.
- TypeEE, on 10/10/2007, -2/+40It sound fishy.
- people with rare collectible items usually sell it through online auction houses
- You would almost never expect yourself to receive a payment over $10k through paypal. It does all kind of background check with you if you have a transfer over $2k
- I have seen typos and usually, people will be able to find it, the price will be lower, but not that low. - wolphkaat, on 10/10/2007, -0/+32The 500,000 dollar transaction never went through. The original buyer still has the bottle.

- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -3/+34The seller was an idiot for sending it out
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -7/+37take a look at the bid history you cretins

every one is fake. - DefaultGen, on 10/10/2007, -1/+24It's very easy to not send an item on Ebay, you just get a negative feedback and probably will get suspended for a couple weeks. The seller obviously had no idea what the thing was worth or he'd double check his spelling.
- subtle, on 10/10/2007, -2/+22Did any of you actually read this "post" before digging it?
- eatsushi, on 10/10/2007, -0/+18WILL DO BUSINESS AGAIN! A++++++
- stev3, on 10/10/2007, -2/+20No what he should have done is take some non expensive wine, put in it in a bottle, then send it to the guy with a label he made saying ALLSOP.
- xmkatx, on 10/10/2007, -1/+19Anyone read this article? http://www.tulsaworld.com/news/article.aspx?articleID=070828_1_A2_spanc46672
- suprchunk, on 10/10/2007, -0/+17You are absolutely 'write'; How can they do that?
- socalrob, on 10/10/2007, -7/+24Here are the links to the ebay auctions as provided from http://www.metafilter.com/64320/eBay-Arctic-Ale-Ouchy
First Auction : http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=270132264843
Second Auction : http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=260145824374 - qualish, on 10/10/2007, -1/+18How the ***** does someone misspell "PS2"?!?
- mrASSMAN, on 10/10/2007, -5/+21$500,000.. man that's insane. I think I would jump off a building if I were the first guy. Aw well, he didn't even put any effort into the auction, I bet he thought that the $400 he got for it was a great success.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -3/+18I wouldn't care if it's a legally binding contract, I'd simply not send it out . . . . . try and take me to court, I'd make sure he got a bottle of the misspelled item.
- shunpike, on 10/10/2007, -1/+15This is what they guy who bought it for $400 wrote in feedback for the other guy: 'STELLAR bottle! Rarest bottle ever sold on E-Bay...BAR NONE! EXC SELLER! EXC!!!'
Wonder when the guy worked out there had been a mistake? - qualish, on 10/10/2007, -0/+13Good find. There needs to be a feature to "promote" posts like this closer to the top of the comments sections. Too bad it is relatively obscured in the commenting system.
- Bricks, on 10/10/2007, -0/+13Sorry, I wouldn't have posted if I knew you were on your period.
- adrianmonk, on 10/10/2007, -0/+12Thanks for posting that. It's clear by looking at the first auction, where the item went for $300, that the person listing it not only made spelling error in the heading but also in general didn't put much effort into the listing at all. It's short, not very descriptive, doesn't highlight the value of the item very well, is formatted poorly, and in general it is clear that not much effort was put into it.
Meanwhile, the listing that garnered $500,000 for the same item is well formatted, highlights the value of the product well (including making the assertion that it is museum quality, which would appear to be true). And it has multiple photos, all of which are composed decently and are in focus.
This backs up my theory that people judge the value of the item partly based on the level of professionalism and effort put into the listing. People want to feel they're getting an item that the seller thought was important enough to spend some time on. Would you buy a million dollar home from a real estate agent that described it as "some house or something, I think in the west part of town, and it has like 3 or 4 or 5 bedrooms or something?" Nope, because even if the house was awesome, you would not have confidence you were not getting ripped off due to the uncertainty created by the seller's behavior.
Basically, to a seller, eBay is a marketing tool. It exposes your product to potential buyers. If you fail to make the most of it and you lose out, whose fault is that? - Moriya, on 10/10/2007, -0/+12mmm...copypasta
- PARAPA, on 10/10/2007, -1/+13So that's the idea behind digg...
- CaptSolo, on 10/10/2007, -0/+12Perhaps this is a "digg" to get author's blog more popular or drive traffic to that "bid misspellings" site.
- revenge7, on 10/10/2007, -4/+16Hey, want to hear something bad? I sold a first print edition of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone for less than $20 on ebay. The winner turned around and sold it for about $2500.
- TaleSurovi, on 10/10/2007, -2/+12Quite possible. Besides, even if this is no "get famous" scam, there's NO WAY the seller will ever see his half a million dollars. Just take a look at the bidders.
- adrianmonk, on 10/10/2007, -4/+14I get $400 for beer bottle on eBay. Is great success! My neighbor sell it again for $500,000. He's pain in my *****.
- Lewie, on 10/10/2007, -1/+11I was blowing my nose while reading your comment; I laughed so hard I almost blew out my eardrums!
Dugg
noobsauce...lol! - lirem, on 10/10/2007, -2/+12Surely if you were putting up an item that could fetch half a million dollars you'd put a bloody reserve on it?
- xerosis, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9For *****'s sake, this is clearly spam.
- madkapitolist, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9All fake, I think ill report him actually...
- undetected, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9The people willing to pay 500k for a bottle know what they're buying. The problem of the seller here is, by listing his item under a misspelled name, that he didn't present his item to those people.
- tallymebanana, on 10/10/2007, -1/+10Who's the cretin? "eBay has changed how bid history information is displayed for higher-priced items. To help keep the eBay community safe, enhance bidder privacy, and protect our members from fraudulent emails, only you and the seller of the item can view your User ID in bid history. Other member will see anonymous names."
- titorTT, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8oh this is so fake. buried (and the buries should have more power to bring this crap down)
- willis77, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8FLAWLESS VICTORY
- lemonstardust, on 10/10/2007, -2/+10You should have at least given Bricks credit for posting it...
- kilroy0097, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7Indeed and I agree. Shenanigans supported.
- kahlessreborn, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8I think this is spam because the ebay auction doesn't look quite right all this is a brand new submitter/profile. Will no other diggs comments or anything.
- vertinox, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7Well, considering all the bids are fake and that fake bidders were increasing the price... I really doubt anyone saw any money for anything.
- Mouser58907, on 10/10/2007, -2/+9rofl i logged in to digg it up too.
- modifiedbears, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8This is such *****. 492 suckers and counting.
- MikeonTV, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7I read this article two times and still don't know why the original seller would not have known the value of the bottle.
- elcaminos, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7Wait, wouldn't he still have to pay astronomical seller fees to ebay?
