- monkeyflingpoo, on 10/10/2007, -1/+30I like how Toshiba doesn't even need to be named in the title to know that they are simply the third iteration of the only HD DVD players on the market...
- harrypl0tter, on 10/10/2007, -2/+27LOL who else makes hd dvd players?
- spoiled1, on 10/10/2007, -2/+173rd gen already .... it's not even a year yet!
- Area51mafia, on 10/10/2007, -7/+20If only Blu-Ray and HD-DVD could merge somehow. Use the Blu-Ray hardware/discs, and the HD-DVD name.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -19/+29The format war is already over. It was over before it began with Disney agreeing to use BD as its high def optical disc format. Now that Denon has announced that it will be bringing 2 Blu Ray players to market after CEDIA this fall, you can stop buying your 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th or any generation player no matter how cheap they are. The format has already lost in the home theater market.
- cyrix, on 10/10/2007, -5/+14Not to mention many retailers stocking more Blu-Ray discs than HD-DVD discs. All movie rental places in my town switched to BR only. Our Wal-mart stocks BR over HD-DVD at a rate of about 6-1. I'm neutral on the formats tbh. I don't like either due to their schemes to limit how I enjoy my media. And I don't even have a HD player yet (not even a PS3 or HD-DVD add on for my 360.)
- digason, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8The official abbreviation is BD as in "Blu-ray Disc"
- chocobomog, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8Kids ages 0-10 are still raised on the classics like Snow White, Pinocchio, Jungle Book, Lion King, etc. Not to mention all the Pixar movies which are a part of Disney now. So yes, a lot of people still care about Disney.
- lesty420, on 10/10/2007, -4/+11How is HD-DVD better. The only advantage is its region free
- mgrest, on 10/10/2007, -2/+9>because NEVER will a DVD ever reach 50GB!
Yeah, and 640K ought to be enough for anybody... - felman87, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7Won't happen. The most Toshiba can hope for is for both formats to co-exist. MS is in it because their want their digital download to be the next big thing. The longer the "HD war" plays out, the better it is for them. Although one can only wonder what would happen when Sony enters digital download. I mean, they do have their own movie studios.
- felman87, on 10/10/2007, -2/+8Though their track record is against them, I don't see them losing this one.
- streak, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6October is when the true 2nd generation BR players also arrive. (The current generation is more like version 1.5).
- readme, on 10/10/2007, -4/+10Universal and Weinstein are going multi-format Q1 08. This war is over. The funny part is people call Blu-Ray a Sony format, when the BDA consists of about 15 companies, Blu-Ray is exlusively backed by five studios, and 10+ CE manufactures are making BD drives. Over in the HD-DVD side, only two studios back HD-DVD and Toshiba is the only CE maker manufacturing stand-alone units.
- writh3n, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7You fool, how dare you question the pro-ms hd/dvd stories and anti-ps3/blu-ray stories on digg. You shall be punished accordingly.
- chocobomog, on 10/10/2007, -4/+10Wrong.

For the week ending in 7/22/07 Blu-ray outsold HD-DVD 3:1
Since the beginning of 2007 Blu-ray averages outselling HD-DVD 2:1
And even though HD-DVD had a 3 month head start, Blu-ray now has 60% of the entre HD market and continues to grow (especially since each week it outsells HD-DVD 3:1 or more).
HD-DVD is not selling better. - chocobomog, on 10/10/2007, -3/+8The HD-DVD name is actually hurting them more than it is helping. Consumers on confused because they think they can play the HD-DVDs in a regularly DVD player as long as they have a HDTV. Their thought process is "I have a DVD player, and I have a HDTV, therefore I can play HD-DVDs!". Look at the comments for big HD-DVD movies on Amazon.com (like Planet Earth). You will have numerous negative comments from people who bought the dvds only to realize they don't play in their regular player.
- M4tt3r, on 10/10/2007, -2/+6What is this you call, "remember"?
- MidnightWatcher, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4But it's true though. Blu-ray players are nowhere near the spec-complete HD DVD players. This isn't going to happen until BD profile 2.0, which is probably a year or two away (if ever).
- AARGH2K, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Sony and Disney didn't want Managed Copy for one. They want control of what you do with the media you purchase. #1 reason why I do not support Blu-Ray. The only version of managed copy they want is where you pay a fee. I'm voting pro-consumer here, not for the evil overlords of media control. Rootkits and perpetual extension of copyrights, yeah they got the public interests at heart.
- felman87, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5You're not forced to buy a PS3 either, so I don't see what the problem is.
- 808kick, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4So does Dell
- MattBlackCat, on 10/10/2007, -3/+7Samsung has a dual format player that fully supports both formats coming out in the Autumn - it's the way forward while studios waste their time trying to piss higher up the wall than the next guy.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -4/+8*Yawn*
- acid0426, on 10/10/2007, -2/+6But then you lose it after two weeks and have to watch it within 24 hours after starting it.

What they say doesn't mean a whole ton. What's going to matter is Walmart. I'm waiting for them to chime in with something, but once they do don't figure on any studio staying exclusive with a format Walmart won't sell.
- MidnightWatcher, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3I think it is helping quite a bit. People know what HD is. People know what DVD is. You'd have to be a vegetable to not know what HD DVD is. As for people confusing HD DVD as able to work in a regular DVD player, that's very few. Some of those who 'claim' to have made a mistake on Amazon are known to be Blu-ray fanboys.
- frogman54, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3BD? That is stupid. That sounds like a disease you get from one too many trips to the "ladies of the evening."
- X18999, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4this is NOT about consoles, you don't have to buy a 360 or PS3 for HD-DVD or Blur-Ray.
That 'Choice' argument is crap anyways. - JohnnyXmas, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Blu-Ray and HD-DVD CAN merge, you'll just never, ever, EVER see it. hence the term "Competing technologies." It'd be like McDonald's and Burger King merging.
- scorpokat3, on 10/10/2007, -3/+6and your reasoning...?
You fail to convince me with your pointless post. - mr804, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4only 720p...
- jordanlund, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3The last time I checked (a few days ago) Blu-Ray had around 370 titles either out or with firm dates compared to around 340 on HD-DVD. The difference is negligible despite the fact that Blu-Ray supposedly has more studio support.
The interesting thing is that when I compared both lists to my own DVD collection, there were about 30 Blu-Ray titles that I thought were good enough to buy on DVD, but about 50 HD-DVD discs in the same category.
As long as they keep churning out garbage like Ultra Violet and Underworld on Blu-Ray it's still going to be the weaker of the two formats. - smhTheory, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5hehe, "raises the bar".... except for the whole disc capacity thing, haven't raised that bar....
- nnscott, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4Everything I read, heard and have seen points to Blu-Ray. With that said I bought a Playstation 3. Now if for whatever reason the distribution companies and studios swing towards HDDVD I'll buy a reasonably priced player for that as well... For me just being on the cutting edge of technology is fun.
Also, there is already a multi format player available, you just have to pay $1000 to get one... - JayD16, on 10/10/2007, -3/+5Isn't it obvious? Until they become totally unprofitable. Lost cause or not they will churn out as much product as they can until no one buys them.
- mrgreen4242, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Thanks for mentioning one of the most important things in this "war". Managed copy is mandatory in HDDVD and optional on BD. That alone is enough to make me root for HDDVD. Even a DRM locked SD copy of a movie is a pretty decent deal when you consider you can't (legally) copy a DVD at all.
- mrvociferous, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Considering Disney owns ABC and ESPN...yeah, I think people still have an interest in them...
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4I blame limited options on the HDDVD rack vs blu ray. When i go to bestbuy, they have twice as many blu ray movies as HDDVD titles. I own an HD DVD player and i enjoy it, but we need more movies!
- JayD16, on 10/10/2007, -5/+7What do you expect from the ridiculous spin on engaget? "just when the Blu-ray camp thinks they're going to catch up with HD DVD's full featured players" What the hell is this?
Total BS is what... - realdeal83, on 10/10/2007, -3/+5Sorry man, the war is over. The studios picked Blu-ray and that gave them the advantage, Blockbuster put the final nail in the coffin a few months ago. Only a moron would buy a HD-DVD player at this point.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Not to mention Microsoft, a perenial favorite here in Digg.
- JAC34, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4As of today Blu-ray is still not as mature as HD DVD. The hardware that first came out cannot playback some of the content released on the newer BD disks. In some cases doing a firmware upgrade doesn't even solve the problem. The only way to fix the problem is to buy a new player. A first gen HD DVD player can playback all the content that was released on a brand new HD DVD such as the new 300 title. Blu-ray couldn't even include all the extras for that title because of limitations or immaturity of it's technology. Plus, have you ever seen a dual format BD + DVD on one disc? No, what an extremely handy feature available only to HD DVD. Sony has just made a bunch of hollow promises to all these manufactures and movie studios. Eventually they will realize that and will slowly start to migrate over to HD DVD. You just wait and see!!
- lesty420, on 10/10/2007, -4/+6Can't wait until this is over and blu-ray is the winner.
- felman87, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2hardware. (not counting PS3s of course) Software sales go to blu-ray. If toshiba is breaking even on the players then everything's good, if not then...well..
- MidnightWatcher, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2It's actually over a year. HD DVD players came out in April 2006 iirc.
- MidnightWatcher, on 10/10/2007, -0/+21st Gen April 2006 HD-A1, XA1
2nd Gen October - November 2006 HD-A2, XA2
3rd Gen October 2007 HD-A3, A30, A35 - Kwipper, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Third Generation? What happened to the 2nd generation?
- Ajajadude, on 10/10/2007, -10/+12Yes, because Sony is the only one supporting Blu-Ray.
