- synystar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1agreed. as I said once already in a comment today why bother commenting that you aren't going to digg something? Silliness. if you think it's old, a dupe, or for whatever other reason, don't digg it. Getting upset and accosting a poster about something so trivial is little more than evidence of a lack of self-control. of course, surely someone would point out that I am equally as bothered by something trivial. Where's my self-control!? =)
- grantmiller, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1A must read for anyone who has ever been interested in Search Engine Optimization. The slide show provides really interesting information about how page rank is determined (including the idea that a link transfers page rank depending on how many links are outgoing from the original page). Very cool.
- ralphmalph, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1and some more ... note the last sentence (this is taken from dictionary.com)
Usage Note: The verb author, which had been out of use for a long period, has been rejuvenated in recent years with the sense “to assume responsibility for the content of a published text.” As such it is not quite synonymous with the verb write; one can write, but not author, a love letter or an unpublished manuscript, and the writer who ghostwrites a book for a celebrity cannot be said to have “authored” the creation. The sentence He has authored a dozen books on the subject was unacceptable to 74 percent of the Usage Panel, probably because it implies that having a book published is worthy of special lexical distinction, a notion that sits poorly with conventional literary sensibilities and seems to smack of press agentry. The sentence The Senator authored a bill limiting uses of desert lands in California was similarly rejected by 64 percent of the Panel, though here the usage is common journalistic practice and is perhaps justified by the observation that we do not expect that legislators will actually write the bills to which they attach their names. ·The use of author as a verb in computer-related contexts is well established and unexceptionable. - ralphmalph, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1since you seem to be too lazy to look it up youself:
tr.v. au·thored, au·thor·ing, au·thors
1. Usage Problem. To assume responsibility for the content of (a published text).
2. To write or construct (an electronic document or system): authored the company's website.
since it's an embedded ppt presentation on a webpage, the word usage is correct, and authored btw is a real word. - saluki1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Haha - Larry Page's office at Stanford? Gates 360!

- jamms, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0site works fine for me. that slide show is awesome. nice to see where they came from.
lets all welcome our google overlords.... - Nick_Circosta, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0the algorythems it shows are preaty cool i gotta say that ...
- Gavin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wow i did not know that.
- cyberprashant, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0hmm...I thought the pagerank algorithm was supposed to be secret
- ratlhead, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Would you like to elaborate on that, ratlhead?"
Sure.
Aside from a good search platform that generates billions (and maybe Google Analytics), I'm still trying to figure out what makes Google so "cool" and so much better than all the other internet biggies...
-Gmail is no better than the other webmail clients out there. The new Yahoo! Mail Beta is way better. Keep up'ing the space...but who the hell will EVER need 2 gigs for email?
-GMaps is nice, but the others are catching up. Aside from the satellite views, it will not be any better than other map sites out there. Keyhole was BOUGHT to make Google Earth.
-Google News doesn't touch My Yahoo!.
-Google Talk is a JOKE.
-They have no solid user database of users aside from those who have signed up for GMail.
-Now we have talk that Google's Classifieds is gonna march on it and top eBay/Craiglists which have been around for years developing their technologies.
-Oh let's not forget Google Payments...that's gonna instantly take over PayPal as the leader in online payment systems? PayPal has years of work ahead of them in working with other countries and developing their platform to make it useful worldwide.
All I can say is, gimme a break. Google is around here in the Silicon Valley trying to suck up every possible developer they can, and have been a number of years now. And, what have they done?
It's all hype people, and I say that makes them "evil"... It's as if they can do no wrong in the eyes of many of you, and that's just ridiculous. - el_jefe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"as I said once already in a comment today why bother commenting that you aren't going to digg something?"

Thats like saying you shouldn't comment on someone running for political office if you are not going to vote for them. Perhaps a commentator wonts to point out there are better things to digg than this article. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Sadly the poor guy still hasn't been granted his PhD from standford. Shame on Stanford.
- chriskelley, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I stumbled onto a public access channel late one night and saw a presentation of something similar to this being explained to a lecture hall full of college students. Very interesting, and I thought very cool for Google to contribute to the community like that.

""Thats like saying you shouldn't comment on someone running for political office if you are not going to vote for them. Perhaps a commentator wonts to point out there are better things to digg than this article."
Of course, but it's closer to someone who doesn't care enough to vote at all complaining about the candidates. It's like bitching to the guy next to you at the magazine rack that the article he's browsing in National Geographic is old news, YOU read about it 6 weeks ago in SA. You might think it makes you look smart, he probably thinks you're lacking social skills.
If every digg user commented each time they saw an article they thought was old, or not digg-worthy, the comments would quickly become to cumbersome to bother reading. I happen to like seeing what other people have to say about the articles I'm interested in, but I have to wade through "this sucks, no digg. that's so last month" etc. to get to those comments. Some of us may know everything and have the time to keep up to date on every last bit of news. Others are grateful someone submitted an interesting article that we missed."
How is it like somebody who doesn't want to vote? We don't have the chance to vote "no" if we want to. We can report that there is something wrong with a submission (guess what, "old news" is considered report-worthy by Digg, so this should be reported off whether or not you have seen it), but that's not really a negative vote.
Besides, why shouldn't we say that it's old or not diggworthy? If it's old, then it shouldn't be on Digg anyway (digg's opinion on this one, not just mine). If it's not Digg-worthy, how is a well thought-out, well-written comment about why it shouldn't be on Digg worse than a simple one that just says "Cool, I digg"? Perchance you should just use the moderation pull-downs.
@ratlhead:
"-Gmail is no better than the other webmail clients out there. The new Yahoo! Mail Beta is way better. Keep up'ing the space...but who the hell will EVER need 2 gigs for email?"
Well, a friend of mine used the 2 gigs fairly quickly, and she deletes regularly. Obviously it has use if you actually do something with it beyond "dude, concert tonight?". And why is Yahoo! Mail even improving itself? Gmail was good enough that it had to get better to compete.
"-GMaps is nice, but the others are catching up. Aside from the satellite views, it will not be any better than other map sites out there. Keyhole was BOUGHT to make Google Earth."
I use gmaps before anything else and it never fails me. Why are the others catching up? Because they are forced to in order to keep up with Gmaps.
"-Google News doesn't touch My Yahoo!."
I don't use either, so I'm not qualified to comment.
"-Google Talk is a JOKE."
Simple frill-free IM system? Quick and easy integrated VoIP? If more people used it, it would be my sole IM client. If and when they support file transfers it'll be even better, but gmail accounts are working just fine for transfers.
"-They have no solid user database of users aside from those who have signed up for GMail."
Relevance being...?
"-Now we have talk that Google's Classifieds is gonna march on it and top eBay/Craiglists which have been around for years developing their technologies."
Point being...?
"-Oh let's not forget Google Payments...that's gonna instantly take over PayPal as the leader in online payment systems? PayPal has years of work ahead of them in working with other countries and developing their platform to make it useful worldwide."
No one said instantly. Besides, if they do away with the giant transaction fees, it won't be long before it upseats PayPal.
Now, I won't even attempt to claim that everything Google does is perfect (Web Accelerator, anyone?), but they are generally good. They are fostering improvement everywhere, and many of their services are superior in many ways. Where's the evil? - Chtiwi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0voici une bonne explication en détail http://www.xcess.info/fr/comprendre_le_google_pagerank_en_detail_afr.aspx
- Bromskloss, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'll have to agree with you, ratlhead, that the services you mention aren't something that makes Google great. In fact, I use none of those you mention, apart from Maps, and I _still_ think they are really good.
It seems to me that you, but not I, are looking at them from an economic perspective. You say "They have no solid user database" while don't see how a user database would do me any good.
"Now we have talk that Google's Classifieds is gonna march on it and top eBay/Craiglists which have been around for years developing their technologies."
This further illustrates that you, as far as I can see, are more concerned with their profit than with how you are benefiting from their services. Well, OK, if no one is accepting those Google payments, it will decrease your use for it, I admit. On the other hand, I cannot really say I think that makes them evil. Newcomers are always welcome, aren't they?
What I like about Google is that they, mostly, seem to think before they create stuff and make sure they provide a nice, clean, user interface wich allows you to do the things you actually want to do. They are not pushing ads as violently as many other places and they have been showing a nice attitude towards free software. Oh, and working at one of their offices seems to be a pleasant experience. You know, the dogs and all.
I thus think they are so far living up to their motto "Do no evil.". - jaggyg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0hear hear thiknjuicy

I suspect ratlhead works for Yahoo! they were the evil ones making you pay for their mail to get any decent features out of it. i think you still have to pay if you want POP access and 2GB. Google's web client is the best I've ever used - their spam blocking rocks - and it's all free. Google is the bomb and the haters be damned.

Was it someone from Google giving the presentation (and contributing to the community)? I have too attended a similar lecture and that was just given by an in-house teacher. It's not like the principles behind Google's ranking have been secret until now or anything. - TarryTops, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0To ratlhead
You Said: Aside from a good search platform that generates billions (and maybe Google Analytics), I'm still trying to figure out what makes Google so "cool" and so much better than all the other internet biggies...
Then you just have to wait and watch what's coming.
You Said:-Gmail is no better than the other webmail clients out there. The new Yahoo! Mail Beta is way better. Keep up'ing the space...but who the hell will EVER need 2 gigs for email?
Really? Back in 90's Bill gates too said "who the hell will ever do business on internet?
You Said:-GMaps is nice, but the others are catching up. Aside from the satellite views, it will not be any better than other map sites out there. Keyhole was BOUGHT to make Google Earth.
Agreed. But it IS nice, ain't it?
You Said:-Google News doesn't touch My Yahoo!.
Agreed there.
You Said:-Google Talk is a JOKE.
I want a simple textual chat and no msn crap.
You Said:-They have no solid user database of users aside from those who have signed up for GMail.
Where did you get that info.
You Said:-Now we have talk that Google's Classifieds is gonna march on it and top eBay/Craiglists which have been around for years developing their technologies.
Wait on this one too.
You Said:-Oh let's not forget Google Payments...that's gonna instantly take over PayPal as the leader in online payment systems? PayPal has years of work ahead of them in working with other countries and developing their platform to make it useful worldwide.
Usurpation. Google might buy paypal.
You Said:All I can say is, gimme a break. Google is around here in the Silicon Valley trying to suck up every possible developer they can, and have been a number of years now. And, what have they done?
OK you may have a point there.

You know, there's already a perfectly good verb for "written". It is, guess what, "written". If someone can explain to me the difference between "authored" and "written", I'd be delighted to hear it. Otherwise, can we just use the real word?
[/grammar rant off]
(interesting article, btw) - Dellitron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0oh i forgot .. Yahoo .. there are far more spam pages to be found on Yahoo .. Yahoo is also LOADED with home made spam directory web pages .. yahoo does not act on these web pages .. Google on the other hand is very aggressive to take spam pages off their servers FAST.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0google kicks ass
- Dellitron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Google has been a godsend for millions .. it picked up where the others failed - i have used it as my library for years now.
* the dead beats that do not get it are still using dogpile :-) - ConEEE, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I've never seen this before. I'm sure 90% of new digg users have never seen this before. Stop complaining about goddamn reposts people!
If you've seen it before: report it as lame... - jcs_goog, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Getting back to the link that was posted, Larry Page deserves to be commended for spearheading the effort to create Backrub/Google. It was an aggressive effort that has clearly helped people use the internet. What is amazing is that Google became great with only a few hundred employees.
Despite what some people may say about being "evil", the majority of internets care more about search results and aren't even aware of the "evil" argument. - Bromskloss, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0"Google = evil. They can go to hell."
Would you like to elaborate on that, ratlhead? - BugMeNot2, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Site isn't working for me.
