The new 100 most useful sites by Guardian
technology.guardian.co.uk — Two years ago most Britons didn't have broadband and Web 2.0 was barely a twinkle in a developer's eye. Things have changed - as our cream of the crop for 2006 shows
- 861 diggs
- digg it
- PayneX, on 10/12/2007, -36/+7Pah! this Top 10 list is unworthy of digg.
- mytea, on 10/12/2007, -2/+31@PayneX.. OK, well..
1) It's a top 100
2) They big up Digg so more power to them
3) It did have a couple of sites (if only a couple) I was unaware of..
4) Why so negative? It's christmas after all.. - OnymousHero, on 10/12/2007, -16/+7Yechh its from the Guardian ... so take it as "actual content coincidental"
- Dundasbro, on 10/12/2007, -12/+2@mytea
Christmas... Bah humbug... - markdr123, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5@OnymousHero - No, the Guardian's actually quite reliable. It's the Sun you gotta watch out for.
- mytea, on 10/12/2007, -2/+31@PayneX.. OK, well..
- mrjames, on 10/12/2007, -2/+25Great list, read this in thursday's Grauniad and wondered whether it might turn up here (with at least two references to digg, it had to).
- allancorbett, on 10/12/2007, -7/+23Dugg your comment for the misspelling of Guardian
- Bloc, on 10/12/2007, -1/+26http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Guardian
"The paper is sometimes known as "The Grauniad". The term was coined by Private Eye on the basis of the paper's frequent typesetting errors, for which it became infamous in the era before computer typesetting. Many mistakenly believe the paper misspelled its name in its masthead; it only actually misspelled it on the header of one page."
- kalphegor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Where is Netvibes?
- Ramble, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Ahh, two years ago I must've been on my 600k connection.
*sniff*My first broadband connection...- SuperNick, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1My first broadband connection: 256k (and that was downloading!!!!)
All because the local telephone company has monopoly over Internet service in my neck of the woods (to this day!)
Ridiculous pricing for ***** speeds.
Where is broadband across the US?
- SuperNick, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1My first broadband connection: 256k (and that was downloading!!!!)
- utcursch, on 10/12/2007, -9/+3Probably a better title would be "The new 100 most useful sites for Britons". I found the list somewhat UK-centric. Anyway, it was informative in the sense that it had a few sites I was unaware of.
- Psych77, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17Why should it specify? I don't see any links specify that they're aimed at US readers, even when they are almost exclusively for US readership. Oh yes, I forgot, Al Gore invented the internet so it's owned by the US....
And it does say it's from the Guardian - a UK broadsheet. - troydoogle7, on 10/12/2007, -14/+3I think they should rename this as top 1 retarded newspapers. The list is incomplete, poorly written and generally sucks a lot.
There is some uk centric stuff in there but most of it seems as though the reporter wanted to go to the pub early that day so just copied other peoples "incomplete" lists. They should get some real journalists to work at the guardian. Not just R*tards who learnt how to read digg and use google.
Ladies and gentleman, this article is what your lame button was made for! - jeremynicolas, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Actually I dugg this pretty much because it had the Guardian in the title. But I'm sad like that.
It also gives a mention to VideoJug.com - which doesn't get enough attention anyway.
- Psych77, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17Why should it specify? I don't see any links specify that they're aimed at US readers, even when they are almost exclusively for US readership. Oh yes, I forgot, Al Gore invented the internet so it's owned by the US....
- SOAB, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1So so list. Nothing new or earthshaking here. Yawn... No Digg.
Happy / Merry whatever you celebrate folks. :-) - searchjerkdotco, on 10/12/2007, -11/+1where is http://www.searchjerk.com
- taxonimous, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6It would have been ok if it wasnt for that mention of web2.0. "Web2.0" just winds me up, sorry. The technologies used in "web2.0" were around two years ago, heck outlook/exchange web ui did most of what these so-called "innovative" interfaces do *years* ago they just didn't give it a lame AJAX monicker.
- jezbooker, on 10/12/2007, -14/+3I have one immutable law in my life which is: If the Grauniad says something is good, avoid it.
- allancorbett, on 10/12/2007, -1/+19I go by the opposite.
And I only tend to look down/ignore the following papers:
News Of The World
Daily Express
Daily Star
Daily Record
The Sun
Daily Mail. - Bloc, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7like digg.com?
fail. - BarriedaleNick, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2I tend to agree - gave up read the Grauniad a couple of years ago - got feed up with being told how useless men were by useless journos..
- gamesector, on 10/12/2007, -6/+4The Independent is the UK's best paper :)
- allancorbett, on 10/12/2007, -1/+19I go by the opposite.
- trak2, on 10/12/2007, -4/+0Lack of http://www.eioba.com ( http://www.eioba.com/about_en.html ) - big mistake for me...
- eigenweasel, on 10/12/2007, -7/+5The 7 most useful sites for Grauniad Journalists:
1) dictionary.oed.com
2) www.marxismforbeginners.org.uk
3) www.mycocainereviews.net
4) www.islingtonpropertywatch.co.uk
5) www.whichpolishaupair.com
6) www.arentthosenorthernersfrightful.org.uk
7) www.whyihatetheenglish.net- mrjames, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8You obviously know nothing of the paper. "Until 1959 it was called The Manchester Guardian, reflecting its provincial origins." Go back to Daily Mail Island and pretend it's 1947.
- BarriedaleNick, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1MrJames..
That was 47 years ago - there's just the possibility that things have moved on a little since then. Also why assume that just because someone doesn't like Grauniad that they are a flag waving, spittle mouthed Mail reader. A bit of a bigoted point of view. I can't stand the Grauniad but - god on a bike - the Mail makes me retch..
- Splutterbug, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Very cool list, it's nopt going to have everything but has a few links I've never heard of.
- inlove, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Bah! No spot for GameSpot in gaming websites?
- mriegger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Thats because The Guardian is pissed that Gamespot only gave Zelda an 8.8
- LesbianHam, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0Wait, what? I've had broadband since 2001! I live in London, UK. I am teh r0xXorz! ;)
- Fanboy88, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1They did not mention www.fark.com. This site is very popular with interesting news articles. It is more popular than reddit.com. Personnally, I do not see what the big deal is about reddit.com or http://del.icio.us/. Hmmm,...I guess I don't get it...haha!
- megaman2005, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0This is good info. Thanks for posting
- SSCrow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Gametrailers > Gametab
- hiPpymIck, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3the Guardian is far & away the most well written uk newspapr....the only other reliable ones are Independent & Times
just remember GIT...... - rjani57, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1some of the anti-Guardian comments here surprise me. I am not a regular reader, perhaps because it does not deploy flamebaiting and sensational journalism to attract or keep readers as many of its competitors. But when I do choose to pick one, its is a good intelligent read. Leads me to think that the anti-Guardian comments are from those who simply want to say something for the sake of it (mebbe to get dugg).
IMO, the list reflects the evolution of the web and is a good reference point by various categories.
