solar powered battery chargers - springboks, on 09/10/2008, -1/+20Past tense. I think the "Meek" are already controlling the internet and mobile phones. Long gone are the days when you could sport your fancy toys. Globalization has made this stuff so cheap.
I was in Dar-Es-Sallam Tanzania (Very poor part of the world) and went to the beach to get a coconut (fresh coconut juice). I handed my money and the guy picked up a phone. Called his guy who was ready to climb a palm tree to get a coconut. He returned to me with the coconut. This little shack of a shop couldn't print me a receipt but had wireless technology by the Indian ocean. - geekchic, on 09/10/2008, -1/+18They were too meek to reply.
- voyage34, on 09/10/2008, -1/+14In 2112.
- BXRWXR, on 09/10/2008, -0/+13Has anyone asked the meek what they think about this?
- silviupostavaru, on 09/10/2008, -1/+13WAP is pre OperaMini and SafariTouch era => obsolete.
- tempusrob, on 09/10/2008, -1/+13I'm not sure why this gets brought up every time people talk about tech in developing countries. "Developing" doesn't mean "impoverished." There are plenty of places where basic needs are met but infrastructure is immature or otherwise lacking. That's where stuff like this can help.
- serif69, on 09/10/2008, -1/+13Expect a wave of innovation. And new 419s.
- inactive, on 09/10/2008, -1/+11I know right, how dare they try to improve upon multiple facets of life.
- inactive, on 09/10/2008, -0/+10People got bitchy about Gates because he was using that whole thing to slag off OLPC, just because they snubbed him for Linux.
It was sour grapes, when he should have just kept his mouth shut and done his own thing anyway, without ***** on a project to help the worlds poor.
Coming from someone renown for his altruism, it all sounded a bit rich... - SiliconRain, on 09/10/2008, -1/+9A wave of innovation and a tsunami of phishing scams involving Nigerian dignitaries looking for a bank account to rest thier money in...
- Rotzooi, on 09/10/2008, -1/+8That means it was dugg by 34 very diverse diggers (and probably wasn't shouted).
Now shut up. - scoot2006, on 09/10/2008, -1/+7obviously this is srs bsns
- mrgreg, on 09/10/2008, -1/+6We've taken care of everything, the words you hear, the songs you sing...
- pyroglass, on 09/10/2008, -0/+5You hear that? Blessed are the Greek.
The Greek?
Mmm. Well, apparently, he's going to inherit the earth.
Did anyone catch his name?
Oh, it's the meek! Blessed are the meek! Oh, that's nice, isn't it? I'm glad they're getting something, 'cause they have a hell of a time. - DreKor, on 09/10/2008, -4/+8A wave on innovation and fully WAP compliant pages.
- meruru, on 09/10/2008, -1/+5Less important but no obsolete. Even with OperaMini on my phone I use WAP pages when they are available. A well done WAP page is much nicer to browse then having to constantly zoom in and out and readjust the viewing window.
- superabe420, on 09/10/2008, -0/+3...come and join the brotherhood of man
- arjie, on 09/10/2008, -0/+3Ha ha, I'll believe it when I see it. My government here in India is just beginning regulation for 3G, and that means we're a few years away from high speed internet. That's okay, we have EDGE after all. Wait, no, we don't. We have GPRS! That's awesome! And we get EDGE _sometimes_ when the tower gods have mercy.
Bloody internet, so ***** slow. - Buckwyld, on 09/10/2008, -0/+3I am expecting a bunch of email spam asking for my bank account number to wire me millions of dollars.
- jasoninoakland, on 09/10/2008, -1/+3It's already happened. Some of these innovations haven't made it to developed countries yet.
- crimson117, on 09/10/2008, -0/+2Even if most new internet users will use mobile phones and be in developing nations, most of the buying power will still be in developed countries on regular computers or advanced phones (iPhone, etc), so I doubt this will lead to significantly more WAP development, for commerce at least.
- alamedaman, on 09/10/2008, -1/+3oh the meek, blessed are the meek! well that's nice, cause they have a hell of a time.
1 point to whoever gets this reference. - scarwars, on 09/10/2008, -0/+2c'mon lets haggle
- colasrtney, on 09/10/2008, -1/+3Didn't the meek invent it?

-- Love the life experience explanation attached to your post, +1 to you sir! - alamedaman, on 09/10/2008, -0/+2Well obviously, it's not meant to be taken literally; it refers to any manufacturer of dairy products.

Wimax is the answer. - dondara, on 09/10/2008, -0/+1Where are you from? Nose city?
- sbaysem, on 09/11/2008, -0/+1This is really taking the internet or the world wide web at the palm of the hand. However, I hope internet penetration across regions be that prominent, stable, and secure coz I believe this kind of advantage or perk would only be available to few.
- mrBitch, on 09/11/2008, -0/+1Agreed, Europe has had 3G for years, and recent stats have almost 50% of 3G calls are dropped in mid conversation.
Looks like 3G is ***** everywhere. - Cyclone, on 09/10/2008, -1/+2Bumper sticker I saw: The meek shall inherit *****.
- djfang, on 09/18/2008, -0/+1The article mentions Mobile banking in these developing countries. Seems like many other nations such as South Korea and Japan are ahead of the U.S. with embracing new technology. "U.S. merchants and mobile device makers have been slow to catch on to the pay-by-cellphone concept, although the technology has been in use in Asia for over a year." http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/artic ... I think it's too early to say, but it would be amusing to see it catch on in the developing countries first.
- flannerus, on 09/10/2008, -0/+1Zappa says "the meek shall inherit nothing", so whaddaya do? Eat that pork, eat that ham, laugh till you choke on Billy Graham.
- farfromok, on 09/10/2008, -0/+1blessed are the cheesemakers for *they* shall inherit the earth
- shaherazad, on 09/10/2008, -0/+1Blah Blah Blah, I'll believe it when I see it.

- JasonCox, on 09/10/2008, -3/+3And last year when Bill Gates said this when referring to the OLPC project you guys got all bitchy. Amazing.
- luap119, on 09/10/2008, -2/+1Isn't this expected? Nothing new to me.
