- kyleh, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16looks like Kevin couldn't go a whole day w/o the internet!
- MagikOvenMit, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8New? It's been around since August of 2005.
- str3ama, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Well video is the big thing of 2007, IPTV for 2008 if net neutrality laws pass.
Until then you still have http://www.joost.com http://www.youtube.com http://www.aliveinbaghdad.org http://www.freetube.us.tc http://www.peekvid.com http://www.vodcasts.tv http://www.bleep.tv http://www.current.tv
With all those, you really have no reason to be bored or have any need to shell out $100+ dollars for expensive cable or tv packages. I know that my ISP is already ape ***** over IPTV and video sites, they actually sent a mass mail to all subscribers stating that net neutrality is Bogus, and they already admit to packet shaping torrent downloads. And the worst part is that competition is limited, so they have free reign on deciding what can and can't be done with their service. - crawf061, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7after he invented the internet, it is only natural that he would be responsible for this
- ericeman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3TV, net, blurrier... intentional pun?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Current is pretty cool, it's also not new in the U.S. (U.K. Maybe) I've been watching it for a while.
- spinchange, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4You and this article have your finger on an important topic that is finally coming to fruition, and yet has been talked about by MSM futurists for at least 20 years -- digital media convergence. See also the interactive webcam integration on one of CNBC's prime television shows. The lines are indeed getting blurrier!
Now it's just time for...
"I want my free IPTV" - steelmaverick, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Done. Its called TVUplayer.
Personally I find it kind of slow, but it gets the job done. Slowly.... - ronmexico, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Frightening thought isn't it?
- carpespasm, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3well i for one like currentTV, and though it's pods get repeated more often than i'd like (2-3 times a day) the content is usually pretty interesting.
- b-dizzle, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Personally, I find the pods on Current far more watchable than most TV. I'd watch interesting, independently made pods over reality shows any day.
- remlap, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Its new here in the UK.
Gore launched a UK Centric Current about a month ago. - mb3581, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3its new compared to almost any other network you can name.... also some outlets are just now beginning to offer it
- synaesthesia, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3The day someone finds a way to stream media which is simultaneously uploaded and downloaded by the users ala bit torrent is the day traditional television's death begins.
- diggdong, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2We would all be wearing blue helmets.
- hobophobe, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Let's be honest, there's no such thing as 'TV' as a medium. TV is merely a distribution method for video+audio. As we move forward the goal is to make the TV distribution technology behave more like the computer/internet already does. That means time-shifted content and interaction/configurable viewing.
As a post I read on Slashdot pointed out, the old paradigm only existed due to technological restrictions of the times. Although it allowed certain revenue models to dominate, the new technology makes those models obsolete. Change is inevitable and the companies that embrace it will fare better than those that resist.
The law needs to change as well, but it will inevitably play catch-up to the market and the technology sector. The lobbyists that are today calling for Congress to erode network neutrality and calling for tighter leases on copyright will tomorrow be calling for the opposite. The irony is that in most cases the lobbying efforts are driven by the companies that are paid to lobby and not by the RIAA/MPAA. The latter groups don't stand to gain anything from the efforts, while the companies and people that have convinced them otherwise stand to make a lot of money. - infra172, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Current TV is crap. The title should read "The line between TV and Toilet bets blurrier."
- ThankTheCheese, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Between this and everything he has done for climate change, Al Gore really seems very switched on. I don't live in the USA, but I can't help but wonder how different the world would be had he become president.
- nrfx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Actually, the only live (not dvred) tv i watch anymore is current.tv As for accountability, the only programs that make it onto the network are the ones that the viewers have voted for on the website. Its very very watchable, the format is just odd and takes some getting used to. The independent news pieces are phenomenal, they offer a unique perspective far subtracted from the entertainment news from any of the major networks. Hell, even most of the commercials they run are independently created.. You like a product, say something good about it in a creative fashion, and even the most amateur of amateur artists have an outlet to sell their wares.
The only problem i have with current is theres no real schedule. As they're very fond of saying "Its tv, set on random" - spinchange, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Google has a Current witch, now? She's not a wicked or evil witch, I hope.
- a1programmer, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Wow!!, It's from the same guy who invented the internet!
- MrColdheart, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2I didnt DIGG this but I will comment...
This line between TV and NET has been blurred for a few years with me at least.
If it wasnt for the occasional Law&Order/AdultSwim/Colbert Id be in front of the computer 100%
honestly how many shows do you guys now watch online. - mb3581, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4I used to watch current about a year and a half ago, sometimes there is some pretty interesting "Pods" on there. But I stopped watching as soon as I found out Gore was in charge.
- Spinfusor, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2I watched Current when Comcast added it in my area a few months ago, and the network really sucks.
The content ("pods") wasn't interesting and the hosts were horrible. - Korrigan, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1The only Internet TV "channel" I watch is http://tomgreen.com - dude built a friggin television station in his living room. It could go bad when it gets sponsors though.
- Atomic1fire, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1and for the kids
http://cartoonnetwork.com/video
http://disney.go.com/dxd/ (the dxd stands for disney extreme digital)
http://kids.discovery.com/beyond/ - TheBlackNinja, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1I prefer the web, quality might not be as great, but it's a great way for me to waste my days.
http://www.ovguide.com/ - bozboyku1, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1First off this is not new, you may of just gotten it from your provider but it has been around for a couple years. It had also changed names in that time. The only interesting shows on there are "joe gets" and google current witch is on every half hour
- audiowizard, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Does Al Gore's show feature loops of the sky falling upon our heads?
I liked the facts of Inconvenient Truth, and the overall message that earth is sacred, let's take care of it, but beyond that I think he's somewhat too doomsdayish. - dudad, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1The line was blurry a long time ago when bit torrents first came into existence.
The links in that article absolutely stink (besides youtube) for streamed content. Try the station websites themselves.. like
toonamijetstream.com
nick.com/turbonick
abc.com
comedycentral.com
alluctv.org
google.com
and on and on...
All free.. and with episodes updated almost every monday. - sideshowRAHEEM, on 10/12/2007, -12/+9My cable company just picked up this channel instead of calling it Current TV they should call it OCD TV, 3 to 8min segments on on topics that are almost interesting it's pretty much unwatchable witch doesn't really make it that much different then the other 300 some odd channels that I pay for.
- heythisismyname, on 10/12/2007, -7/+4ADD TV?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -8/+4lame article
- glock22ownr, on 10/12/2007, -8/+3Damn it ! Why wasn't Al Gore this cool like say .... 7 to 8 years ago ...
- VaporBro, on 10/26/2007, -11/+4...?
AHH!!
WITCH!!! - drgruney, on 10/12/2007, -10/+2I was at a television programing convention in January and was on a panel with their news director.
I simply do not understand how the channel can sustain itself.
Where's the accountability? Where's the credibility? It's like a youtube channel but with self proclaimed journalists.
Not saying that a lot of amateurs aren't as good/better than professionals.
