- Kragnerac, on 09/09/2008, -1/+78Congratulations, you've won two free iPod Nanos!
- Smokes, on 09/09/2008, -9/+70Not news.... many of the free "lite" versions of apps already include banner ads that are easy to ignore except for the hypersensitive individuals that will always find something to whine about with free software.
- Paranormalized, on 09/09/2008, -6/+43"this is still very sad"
No, it really isn't. I do have an iPhone, and the headline had me freaked out until I read the article - this isn't going to be pushed out in an update, it's going to be bundled with certain free applications. As long as they tell you up front which apps come with ads, I don't see the problem.
Just don't install ad-supported applications. It's that simple. - volatiledebacle, on 09/09/2008, -6/+39Even though I don't have an iPhone, this is still very sad. :[
- anthonybruno, on 09/09/2008, -6/+37Two words.. Adblock Mobile
- thelab101, on 09/09/2008, -4/+22To all the people who complain about ads: Stop digging top ten creative advertisement articles.
- Radan, on 09/09/2008, -1/+18Also, many of these apps got an adfree version which costs a little money. Nothing is free in this world.
- ronin691, on 09/09/2008, -0/+15Location aware mobile advertising, with its potential multi-billion dollar revenues...it helps the guilt ridden carrier execs sleep at night. ;P
- GetItBuilt, on 09/09/2008, -2/+17As an end user, I hate this type of 'free' ware. As an inventor/investor these types of ideas are awesome. It's a double edged sword for me. On one hand I'd rather just shell out the clams and bypass the nagging. Then with the other I'd love to be able to get my content delivered directly to millions of users.
Good job AdMob. AdMob you suck! (damn it they have made me bi-polar) - inactive, on 09/09/2008, -2/+16"advertisers are likely to view as iPhone as platform worth supporting"
customer however are a different story. ***** that *****. - Pattyo13, on 05/14/2009, -5/+18wow, i never saw this coming
...not - Lionhart, on 09/09/2008, -3/+15There's a simple solution to this. Don't download adware apps.

Three blocks down on your right. - inactive, on 09/09/2008, -1/+10"Ads are everywhere, and I haven't paid attention to a single one ever"
*****. You believe yourself to be impervious to the power of suggestion of advertisments?
You poor deluded moron. So everything you've bought you've bought because of some independant review you read somewhere. Food, clothing, electronics, vacations etc.? Nothing to do with ads?
You are are a consumer-zombie, at least most people know advertisements influence their decisions. - 1RandomNickname, on 09/09/2008, -1/+9One word: Jailbreak
- SurrealDream, on 09/09/2008, -0/+8Has anybody here ever actually willingly clicked through a banner ad? And then, moving forward, has anyone ever actually bought something through that method?
I can't say I've ever done either. Makes me wonder who does actually click on this stuff. - Radan, on 09/09/2008, -0/+8Aright, I don't want ads either but some people are just tiring. You don't want to pay for the apps and suggests that the developers try different ways of earning money, but when they start releasing their apps for free but with ads you scream about that instead. Are developers even allowed to make money on their applications anymore?
- Darkaged, on 09/09/2008, -1/+8Congrats.
- holyreality, on 09/09/2008, -2/+9I'd go ***** crazy if I had to deal with ads everytime I started an app.
- macaca, on 09/09/2008, -3/+9And it sucks to have an iPhone, as I do :(
- bbtweb, on 09/09/2008, -1/+7***** ads.
- enntee, on 09/09/2008, -2/+8How is this Jobs' fault? If the developers want to put ads in, that's their choice, just as it's my choice to delete any app with ads I find too intrusive.
- xsecretfiles, on 09/09/2008, -1/+7Where !! where!
- wiiittttt, on 09/09/2008, -3/+8Ads are everywhere, and I haven't paid attention to a single one ever, so i doubt ads on my phone will have much impact on me.
Keep wasting those dollars trying to make me get your product! - enntee, on 09/09/2008, -0/+5I think saying the iPhone experience is about to be "destroyed" is a tad sensationalist. No one is forcing you to install applications with intrusive ads. Don't like it? Don't install it.
We might start to see more apps that have two versions: one ad supported and one you have to purchase. The ad-supported version may be a good way to try out an app before paying for the "premium," ad-free version.
I hate ads too, but the user still has control over what goes on their phone; Let's not freak out, OK? - britblogger, on 09/09/2008, -4/+9it's not going to destroy anything.
look at it from another angle. many apps that would have once been sold for a price, can now be given away for free with some advertising to cover their own costs in developing better apps. How is this going to cause problems?
you can't visit ANY website these days without confronting some kind of ad/banner/product marketing.
it's called business marketing. we live it with it every day, on television, radio, even console video games these days.
I for one would welcome a little advertising if it means better apps come to iTunes.
again, this will get dugg up from the ***** whiners out there, and I'll get dugg down - but like it or not, I'm right. - xsecretfiles, on 09/09/2008, -0/+4I seriously hate this crap.
the problem is that games like tap tap require you to tap on the screen, and I can see how we can accidentally click on that crap. - ironhide, on 09/09/2008, -7/+11Don't want ad-supported software? Don't download it. You already bought an expensive phone, ***** buy the software and you won't have a problem.
- blogosphear, on 09/09/2008, -4/+8"No baby I'm not cheating on you or talking to anyone, that's just the snorg tees girl, its an ad!"
- Gorgonzola44, on 09/09/2008, -0/+4"already high click-through rates"
The only times I click on the ads that are already on some apps are on accident, which seems to happen a lot for some reason. - danj321, on 09/09/2008, -1/+5me neither
...psyche - inactive, on 09/09/2008, -0/+4Oh ***** I can see that happening to me.
- inactive, on 09/09/2008, -0/+4Yeah way to advertize your sugar water here man. That makes me so angry. I need to cool down with a nice cool refreshing Pepsi. Ahhhh...
- inactive, on 09/09/2008, -0/+4oooohhh
...burn! - JackGrinnan, on 09/09/2008, -2/+6Linux?
- smashingmonkey, on 09/09/2008, -1/+5C'mon, "not" jokes are no longer funny
...not! - TheKorn2, on 09/09/2008, -0/+3...and then there are submissions by MrBabyMan, which are ads disguised as content.
- Septimus, on 09/09/2008, -0/+3I certainly won't download any ad supported apps. Rather pay for a decent app (already bought 20) than get one blazoned with crap I don't want to see.
- timdorr, on 09/10/2008, -0/+3I'm an iPhone developer and have an app in review right now (Scavenge, for what it's worth) that's going to offer an ad-supported and ad-free version. The ad-free version is $0.99, which is the lowest I could make it. It will be interesting to see how much the ad-supported version pays, but it should cover the costs of the servers I need to help run the app. It's one single ad on the main screen of the app and nowhere else in it.
I spent a good amount of time on this and I need to pay for the servers I'm running behind it, so I think it's reasonable to throw one ad in there. - inactive, on 09/09/2008, -0/+3@neFariou5
"I am also impervious to advertising, I don't watch tv, nor radio, and browse the web with adblock."
They have no newspapers or magazines where you're from? Ads on the side of buses and cabs? Trailers on before movies? Signs in shop windows? Billboards? Label logos on peoples clothes? etc. etc. etc.
Well good for you Grizzly Adams, you are an infinitesimally small and insignificant minority. - inactive, on 09/09/2008, -0/+3If it makes apple money then no.
- bluesdealer, on 09/09/2008, -0/+3This is what happens when you take power away from users and give it to companies.
- tobikow, on 09/10/2008, -0/+3No, but i did read the tile as AIDS, and that was pretty lol.
- inactive, on 09/09/2008, -0/+2@Zyphron
So you're saying it IS convenient for users who want to avoid ads?
Try to stay on point. - mediamaker, on 09/09/2008, -2/+4upsides: Developers can produce ad supported killer apps and games for no charge to the user a la battlefield heroes; marketing and digital media specialists like myself can engage our audience via an effective medium. Advertising isn't going anywhere and mobile advertising will be the most important form OF advertising. I wonder if the digg username don_draper is taken?
- TheKorn2, on 09/09/2008, -0/+2"I see you're walking by Mike's Tire & Lube. Would you like a free sample of KY personal lubricant?"
It's coming. Just you wait. - ironhide, on 09/09/2008, -4/+6Oops, I made the mistake of suggesting that Digg readers actually buy software. Silly me.
- timdorr, on 09/10/2008, -0/+2No, it's not. You can advertise as much as you want in the application. As long as it follows the HIG, it's all good.
- spoonchucks, on 09/10/2008, -0/+2This suit is NOOOOOOT black...
- locojones, on 09/09/2008, -0/+2But if your application truly is quality that people want, then you already have a means to monetize it -- by selling it through the app store.
