- Dynamoo, on 10/28/2009, -3/+46"Genius" doesn't necessarily equate to "useful".
As the article says, they had difficult describing Wave.. and this is the main problem. It's so complex and different that people don't "get it".. and I don't think many people ever will. Google Maps on the other hand is easy to understand and a compelling idea. - inactive, on 10/29/2009, -6/+45I still don't understand what Wave is...
- stoanhart, on 10/28/2009, -1/+20What's wrong with a wavy, Google colored W? Seems perfect to me.
- DoodleMaster, on 10/29/2009, -0/+18It wont replace e-mail, but it will compliment it. Sometimes a message left just needs to be a message left. Maybe I don't feel like having an active discussion. Maybe I don't necessarily want someone to read what I'm typing before I've finished etc
- franklymister, on 10/29/2009, -7/+22Google Wave is waaaaay too complex.
It crams dozens of features in where one or two would have sufficed, and overwhelms new users with an interface that's familiar enough to fool you into thinking you understand it, but alien enough that you don't actually know what to do at all.
I'm sure a lot of the ideas are "genius," but it's such a convoluted mess that if it came from any company other than Google, it wouldn't get any attention at all.
If they put it through a serious slimming down and redesign for usability, dropping about 90% of the features; it could be huge. I doubt they'll do that, though. - kahlessreborn, on 10/29/2009, -1/+10I just want it already
- bouche, on 10/27/2009, -6/+15The instant translation feature blew me away. Now, if they would just design a better logo for Wave.
- insomniacal, on 10/29/2009, -1/+10Still waiting for my invite. Where's the love, G?
- inactive, on 10/29/2009, -0/+8Well, sure. If you consider a television to be "Cave Drawing 2.0".
- protodon, on 10/29/2009, -1/+9I still don't get what google wave is. It's just looks like email/im aka gmail. My main problem with gmail is no one else I know uses it, so I can't chat with them, only send emails. I'm sure I will have a similar problem with google wave. This is what happens when you don't have any tech savvy friends.
- saranagati, on 10/29/2009, -1/+8after reading the comments for this article, i think i may just return to slashdot after 3 years of not using it.
- franklymister, on 10/29/2009, -0/+6No, because I've been using Wave for a couple weeks, and it's never simpler. It's always more complex and messy.
- yarg, on 10/29/2009, -0/+6The feature of both parties seeing the conversation being typed in real time reminds me of old-school ICQ. After reading the article I'm not completely buying that Wave is a big innovation, other than it's cloud based.
- fissionignition, on 10/29/2009, -0/+6Nor do I, and I've been "using" it for about a week...
- 6minuteabs, on 10/29/2009, -1/+6And I use dogpile, but my datapoint of 1 doesn't make it a successful search engine.
- MacTyler, on 10/28/2009, -3/+7Extremely well written article. God I love technology.
- inactive, on 10/29/2009, -0/+4Think of an email turn into an IM conversation only add video, audio, cam, spreadsheets, maps and whatever plugins get created along the way. Then, once all the collaboration is done, you can review every edit if you wish to and make sure you like how you got to the end point, not just that you like the end point itself.
It takes time for the invite to arrive by the way. Just so you aren't wondering where it went if it doesn't show up within a few hours. - chicagospur, on 10/29/2009, -1/+5It's really SharePoint with IM built in.
- yarg, on 10/29/2009, -1/+5People can "dig" articles without leaving comments.
- swagv, on 10/29/2009, -0/+4Wave? Are we enumerating semi-famous solutions in search of problems?
- inactive, on 10/29/2009, -0/+4So familiarize us.
- muzzy, on 10/29/2009, -1/+5Why would the instant translation feature blow you away? I'm not knocking on Wave, I think it's a cool idea, but of all the features to be impressed by?
There have been machine translators online for years and years, this simply runs them for you instead of clicking a "translate" button. I've had a Widget that's done that for at least 5 years...
Just saying, y'know... - pklall, on 10/29/2009, -0/+4I'm impressed because it runs 100% in the browser.
I used gobby (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gobby) for collaborative editing a long time ago, and it was a pain to get it installed on everyone's windows machines (although easy for those of us with debian).
I can imagine using google wave would be much easier even if I had to convince some people to get a better browser to use it. - 6minuteabs, on 10/29/2009, -0/+4Except the purpose of sharepoint is crystal clear.
- bsonline, on 10/29/2009, -0/+4Lies! Foul stinky lies! You are a product of the machine!
On the other hand, whatever.
Liar liar pants ABLAZE in a sea of agony. - bsonline, on 10/29/2009, -0/+4I love generalizations, except for the fact that I hate them. I've used a variety of project management and collaboration tools. Wave blows them away.
- MMaster23, on 10/29/2009, -0/+4Great now tell what the ***** it really really does. Nobody gets it.
- txballer, on 10/29/2009, -5/+8This is just another failed project like Google Checkout
- SohailKhanifar, on 10/29/2009, -0/+3I want it and I want everyone I know to have it.
- saranagati, on 10/29/2009, -0/+3you do realize that you can use IMs through gmail right? even to people who aren't using gmail. Wave also isn't limited to only google, anyone can create/install a wave server which can communicate with other wave servers.
- pimpofpixels, on 10/29/2009, -1/+4I get touchy when I see people getting labeled as huge innovators when they're really only incremental innovators and prolific executors.
Google maps was literally Keystone, in-browser, with a map system similar to map quest.
This looks a lot like Skype in-browser, with the natural next step to publishing.
It looks cool, as Skype is cool, and there's a lot of reason to be excited about it.
Still, Let's not pretend they're inventing a 'Whole new form of communication'. Really, they're making a variation on an existing form of communication, and they'll very likely bring it to the masses. - FormerBabby, on 10/29/2009, -4/+7I'm sure wave is cool but that doesn't catapult them into genius stats. Lets try to tone down the fanboism a little bit.
- 4rp4n3t, on 10/29/2009, -1/+4I don't really understand your point, as most of the examples you give are hugely popular...
- carlosabs, on 10/29/2009, -0/+3A nice explanation:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rDu2A3WzQpo - MrSteamTank, on 10/29/2009, -0/+3That was a horrible and way too lengthy explanation. I had to spend time searching as to what the hell Google wave was. From what I understand it's essentially streaming communication.
It sounds interesting in the way bitorrent is. I don't think it will replace e-mails but it could easily substitute msn and skype. - Twinnie, on 10/29/2009, -1/+4I agree, it really just seems like an excuse to get people using Google's maps and stuff even more, since they can't easily get them integrated into emails. Beyond that it just looks like a threaded conversation in Gmail, and that playback feature wouldn't even be necessary if the waves weren't so cluttered.
I think that if it does take off it won't be because of any kind of user experience, it'll be because of the extnesible technology driving it. - GiJoeBob, on 10/29/2009, -2/+5I actually use Google Checkout frequently.
- TSCheredar, on 10/28/2009, -1/+4See also, Google's Favicon...
- pimpofpixels, on 10/29/2009, -0/+2Well, my company never uses email anymore, so regardless of it's intent, that's what service skype serves for us.
Wave, looks interesting, and I'd love an invite.
I won't put my email in, but here's a link to my youtube:
http://www.youtube.com/user/PimpOfPixels
My email is my full name (at top of youtube profile at at the beginning of every video) with no spaces at gmail - endgame, on 10/29/2009, -0/+2Maybe you need to be a systems engineer to appreciate & use wave? I guess that cuts out like 90% of the populace...
- inactive, on 10/29/2009, -0/+2If it doesn't now, it will.
- pimpofpixels, on 10/29/2009, -0/+2Great. Thanks.
I'm really interested in seeing how usage habits might evolve around it.
To what extent will a conversation eventually evolve into a finished document?
Who knows, but it should be interesting to see, and I imagine, a very useful tool. - pimpofpixels, on 10/29/2009, -0/+2Well, Having a email, turn into an IM conversation, turn into a group discussion, turn into a conference call, is pretty sweet.
Thanks for the invite. I look forward to receiving it. - MWeather, on 10/29/2009, -0/+2It's simpler than Facebook. I think people will be able to grasp it.
- 6minuteabs, on 10/29/2009, -2/+4+1. IMO, the root of the problem to me is that a conversation tool and wiki have no business co-residing in the same interface. You can tell me that a service should be able to support wiki/doc editing with a conversation around it, but that's not what this is. What it is is a mess.
- pimpofpixels, on 10/29/2009, -0/+2Does it have a good sketch-book style collaborative drawing system?
- 6minuteabs, on 10/29/2009, -1/+3Thanks schmich for giving the classic G fanboy response- that if you don't understand why it's so great, it must be because you are an idiot. It couldn't possibly be that Google never stopped and asked themselves if cobbling all these things together gave you a sum greater than the parts.
- iwodaveh, on 10/29/2009, -1/+3wAvE WaVe
- inactive, on 10/29/2009, -0/+2A finished document won't always be the end point. It might be just a sandbox in some situations.
What you are quite right about is that it will take time and some creative minds to really make this blossom (which is all but inevitable). It's a blank slate that responds to the person rather than the person molding themselves to the format. - inactive, on 10/29/2009, -0/+2When people go to download Skype, they don't do it thinking "This is going to be an email alternative". They do it because they want VoIP. I mean, Yo Yo Ma might be good at Sudoku, but it's not what he's known for.
I gave you an invite cause you seem like a reasonable guy and will see why the Skype-Wave comparison doesn't work... but I think you wont' see that unless you get hands-on. There's a lot I didn't really understand until I tried it out. -
