- xDynaBlade, on 08/31/2008, -19/+283Why is this important? So other people are using the internet. Who gives a *****?
- lacreme, on 08/31/2008, -4/+174this is new?
i've always regarded the internet as international - jeffness, on 08/31/2008, -3/+132This is retarded. Not only is this the expected conclusion of global adoption, but it is a GOOD thing.
Foreign traffic shouldn't ever go through the US as a matter of efficiency. Why should all traffic pass through the US? If it never has to pass through US routers, that leaves more bandwidth for domestic traffic.
I'm confused as to why this is interpreted as a bad thing. - whereisian, on 08/30/2008, -12/+91It's the logical conclusion of expansion and adoption. The more things the US does to keep control of the internet, the more other countries want no part of it. The Patriot Act forced people to pay attention to where their data lives and what laws govern it. DNS will be next to decentralize, and there is not much the US can do to stop it.
- muffinking, on 08/31/2008, -16/+62Let me tell you something about professors: any time they write something that gets into the popular press, and it isn't some kind of important scientific breakthrough, they're just talking out of their asses.
- andy787, on 08/31/2008, -6/+49The only reason this is on the front page is because the word "America" is in the title. This isn't news; the Internet by its very nature is the most universal technology in the world. It isn't ours no more than it is anyone elses, nor has it ever been. I think Diggers just love to see anything with the combination of the words "end" "era" and "America" in a title.
- Zcott, on 08/31/2008, -3/+45I guess that whole thing about Tim Berners-Lee (an Englishman) creating the web as we know it (in Switzerland) is is largely irrelevant to most Americans.
- Pinkertinkle, on 08/31/2008, -4/+45Its because if data doesn't flow through the US our wonderful telecom companies can't screen it and send it to our wonderful benevolent government to help protect us from terrorists.
- dagr8tim, on 08/31/2008, -0/+40The internet is a distributed, redundant system. Data should only run through the US if it's destination is in the US or the lowest cost (metric) is to route the data through the US.
- norman619, on 08/31/2008, -3/+39“We discovered the Internet, but we couldn’t keep it a secret.”
Ummm... no. We didn't "discover" it. It wasn't some undiscovered land. The US military created it. Reseacrh and education institutions used it till it became popular in the late 80's early 90's. - sockpuppets, on 08/31/2008, -15/+43Then the terrorists have already won.
- inactive, on 08/31/2008, -1/+30Isn't complete decentralization the entire point of the Internet?
- JBmtk, on 08/31/2008, -0/+20actually, its quite the opposite
- Pinkertinkle, on 08/31/2008, -20/+39The era of ... America ... is ending
- nytel, on 08/31/2008, -6/+25HANDS OFF MY INTERNET!!!
- CandidateZero, on 08/31/2008, -3/+21Yeah! *****' NY Times, writin' about stuff that's dumb...
- juliandunbar11, on 08/31/2008, -9/+27Buried for lack of importance.
- Kral, on 08/31/2008, -0/+17@legendxx: Isn't the first step in making a better country identifying and complaining about what's wrong with it?
- christianboutin, on 08/31/2008, -1/+18Nah, that would be porn.
- Sfenton, on 08/31/2008, -4/+21Who would of thought as technology became more affordable for others to have that more people would be connected to the internet?
- EtherGnat, on 08/31/2008, -4/+20"It isn't ours no more than it is anyone elses, nor has it ever been."
Actually at one point it was ours, at least if you go back to the old ARPANET days. Then we gave it away to everybody. That was nice of us. - Asheis, on 08/31/2008, -0/+15I agree.. when I saw this headline.. it confused me a bit. I suppose initially the internet may have been occupied by a majority of american users, but now-a-days, i'd say that it's definately an international kinda place.
- 5xSTUN, on 08/31/2008, -0/+15And really, really lowering your expectations.
- ShadowofAres, on 08/31/2008, -0/+13You can't discover something that doesn't exist.
- squ1sh, on 08/31/2008, -2/+14American companies are afraid of the Asians. They also are not thinking as forward as they should be, but since the Asian nations had to play catch up, they invested with more of the future in mind.
I curseth the internet companies, I want FIBER OPTIC CABLE. - 16777216, on 08/31/2008, -1/+12The same holds true even when it doesn't make the press.
Hell, the person doesn't have a professor for your statement to be true.
- cadmiumpaint, on 08/31/2008, -0/+9and i quote from the book of schnoogins....
"Jay: What the fu@k is the Internet?
Holden: The Internet is a communication tool used the world over where people can come together to bitch about movies and share pornography with one another. " - init100, on 08/31/2008, -0/+9@KibibyteBrain
Reminds me of many diggers, who seem to assume that most or all diggers are Americans. At least I'm not, and I'd assume that I'm not the only one. - 5xSTUN, on 08/31/2008, -3/+12Obligatory: "Ooh, they have the internet on computers now!"
- sockpuppets, on 08/31/2008, -2/+11Vaginanet
- inactive, on 08/31/2008, -2/+10There are some decidedly ***** comments in this thread. Moreso than usual.
- roodammy44, on 08/31/2008, -1/+8Hmm, that's strange.
I thought the american way was criticizing what america is currently doing wrong and trying to fix it. That's what makes the system so great, because things change for the better.
Obviously you must be following bush's american way "Nothing we do can be wrong, as we're america" - Macskeeball, on 08/31/2008, -2/+9It's "would have," not "would of."
- lemur, on 08/31/2008, -2/+9According to the article, it's important because people can communicate with each other without the United States spying on them, and somehow that is super dangerous for the United States. o_o
- Acglaphotis, on 08/31/2008, -0/+7That's pretty much the internet + other irrelevant sites.
- KibibyteBrain, on 08/31/2008, -0/+7But the thing is, are modern day Italians better off for not having to worry about holding needless or even artificial rule over the region? I have a feeling that the "fall" of America, after the adjustment period, will be the best thing to have happened to it so far, especially in the cultural department.
- MrFurious2k, on 08/31/2008, -1/+8I see this as ultimately good thing. There is no more empowering force for individual people than being able to share ideas and converse (even if it turns into a digg flame war). At least we're still talking and can see what other people are thinking. In a more political sense, it helps to curb governments from controlling everything the populace sees or hears. In a sense, it's a great check against totalitarianism.
- ShadowofAres, on 08/31/2008, -0/+6It only takes once.
- inactive, on 08/31/2008, -7/+13Without the world wide web, which was not invented by Americans, the internet would still consist of 3 computers hooked up together in some underground lab.
- RogerStrong, on 08/31/2008, -4/+10>> The more things the US does to keep
>> control of the internet, the more other
>> countries want no part of it.
"The more you tighten your grip, Tarkin, the more star systems will slip though your fingers." - po43292, on 08/31/2008, -1/+7Spy's sappin' my internet!
- x00x, on 08/31/2008, -5/+11It's like everything else about America and the American way of life America has dominated the world like no other civilization, society ever. In the next few decades economists have projected China to eclipse the United States as the world's largest economy. and so it goes with the internet. But the fact of the matter is that it is cause for celebration and not dismay or sadness because after all, isn't this what America wanted all along, what America has yearned for in spreading the ideals, concepts that have made America so great? I believe that in the final analysis, it's the greatest news in a long time.
- ShadowofAres, on 08/31/2008, -0/+6Internet is a subset of Vaginanet.
- Myonosken, on 08/31/2008, -2/+8Dude, gay.
- asunesara, on 08/31/2008, -0/+5Just cause non-Americans are using it doesn't mean that America does not "control" the majority of what the Internet has to offer. Being in South America for 2 months and being from India, it is quite interesting to see that EVERYONE uses Google, Microsoft(not just windows), Facebook, Ebay, PayPal, and slowly...Itunes as well...just to name a few.
Plus, we are at the forefront of Internet innovation and entrepreneurship. Its like saying that Great Britain isn't dominant because they do not have a lot of landmass. - Greanbeens, on 08/31/2008, -0/+5Australia is much worse, you are luckier than you think.
- crossmr, on 08/31/2008, -1/+6"The Japanese “are on a rampage to build out across India and China so they have alternative routes and so they don’t have to route through the U.S.”"
Heads up America...
When a country would rather send their traffic through China than the US, you have a problem.. wake up and smell the coffee.. - strictnein, on 08/31/2008, -1/+6To the genius who already buried me:

There is ***** for bandwidth heading east out of Europe. - jakem1, on 08/31/2008, -0/+5It's a bit sad if you think that the US is the most dominant force in human history. America has less direct international power than former empires (i.e. Britain, Spain, France, etc.) and their cultural influence is fleeting at best. I seriously doubt that Desperate Housewives will be replayed and studied hundreds of years from now (let alone decades from now). America has a great deal of control over the world economy but that is waning and once again I would question the extent to which it rivals former empires.
You may be able to dispatch armies around the world faster than any other power but you don't even wield direct control over the majority of countries in which you have soldiers garrisoned. - inactive, on 08/31/2008, -3/+8Memo to New York Slimes: Stop lying. America did not try to keep the Internet a secret.
