The Austin, TX facility is. That's all. Still, certainly makes me want to use AMD processors even more. - bobo7795, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I am in the Air Force, I heard about this on my way to work on NPR this morning so that's were I got the idea to post it. I am on a base that just put up two wind turbines this year. I am computer geek by trade in the Air Force.
- Evic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Knowing how the "higher-ups" think, I doubt self-preservation ever crossed the USAF's Chain of Command when pursuing these "green" sources. The USAF is one of the most environmentally conscience organizations I have ever been a part of. We know we burn a ton of fuel with our normal daily operations, we know a lot of what we do causes hell to our environment, and a lot of that can't be changed - but a lot of it can be offset.
If you visit any office, at any AFB, you will notice two items at every desk: a recycle bin and a trash can. If you look at ever light switch, there's an orange faceplate sticker that reminds you to "conserve energy, and turn off the lights when you leave." Airmen are even given a 3-hour block of instruction during Basic Military Training on Environmental Protection.
I was going to compile a list of all of the AFB's that are recognized by the Arbor Day Foundation's "Tree City USA" program. Needless to say, I don't have the time right now, but going through the states alphabetically I made it to Florida and here's what I found:
- Maxwell AFB, Alabama
- Eielson AFB, Alaska
- Elmendorf AFB, Alaska
- Luke AFB, Arizona
- Little Rock AFB, Arkansas
- Beale AFB, California
- Travis AFB, California
- Buckley AFB, Colorado
- Peterson AFB, Colorado
- Schriever AFB, Colorado
- Dover AFB, Delaware
- Hurlburt Field, Florida
- Macdill AFB, Florida
- Patrick AFB, Florida
Nearly every base is recognized, and many of the USAF's smaller properties (Fields, Air Force Stations, etc.) are as well. - cheebsmoker44, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4this is just another example of how corporations are suffocating american culture. the money needs to be redistributed. we need a limit on earnings.

- officecamel, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Go Air Force! There is a reason that the US Air Force is the number 1 Air, Space, and Cyberspace Force in the world--that is because we are smart, and using the most advanced technologies available.
Is it really a surprise that the US Air Force is the number one Green Power user in the USA? We have some bases that are 100% powered by Green Power.
"USAF using green energy means that in case of an oil crisis the military wont be hobbled..." I think that statement is BS though--jets still run on oil based fuel. It is everything on the ground that is becoming more Green in its power consumption.
Once again, GO AIR FORCE! www.af.mil - breakneckridge, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1USAF using green energy means that in case of an oil crisis the military wont be hobbled. I imagine that's the reason they do it.

Using High Tech For Conservation http://reno.broowaha.com/article.php?id=4327
We Love Sunlight Spills. In this article, How American Energy Independence Was Won, http://www.broowaha.com/article.php?id=3907, the author wrote,
“Voila, 4,641,748,800 megawatts a year. America’s heir and a spare to American energy independence. The Feds lease this land to U.S. Solar, Inc. (a strong, proud and patriotic USS for the stock exchange with We Love Sunlight Spills as its’ slogan) for The Nevada Solar Plant. U.S. Solar, Inc. is a red-blooded true blue American capitalist mega-corporation. U.S. Solar, Inc., through it’s Nevada division, Nevada Solar, Inc., gets the usual Federal and State tax subsides and contracts awarded to mega-corporations. A new breed of lobbyist is born, one driving electric cars with a solar panel on every roof. U.S. Solar, Inc. immediately pays it CEO $100 million a year plus perks and bonuses. U.S. Solar, Inc. hires illegals, has zero retirement and health care coverage, is non-union. It charges its’ employees for plugging in their electric cars, and each car has a solar panel on its roof. Ownership of electric cars is a condition to employment and the power generated by the solar panel on each car’s roof belongs to the U.S. Solar, Inc. electric grid. For those just not getting it :-( more ;-) tongue-in-cheek sarcasm going on here. Nevada Solar, Inc pays it CEO $50 million a year plus perks and bonuses. Within two years Nevada Solar, Inc., replicates itself in Montana and other American states, then goes global. It’s Another Great American Story. Brings a tear of patriotic pride to my eye, ‘cause boy, we really won that American War for Energy Independence. “ - hordak, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1> The list is directly from the EPA and is current of January 10, 2006.
The EPA isn't very trustworthy these days. That's not to say that all people within the EPA are bad, but the really good people who were dedicated to what the EPA's true meaning have been forced out. - Dirk7589, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Personally I would like to know what the US Air-force is doing with all the renewable technology it is investing in.
- jpyun, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Dugg. Good list.
- OsakaWilson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Black is white, war is peace, the air force is the greenest of all organizations. Do you laugh or cry that so many people can't see through the most basic spin. I'm beginning to believe that over half of the people are of below average intelligence, its possible in this world. :P
- phidong, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm surprised the EPA isn't 100%, but Whole Food Markets is. LOL
- Refrag, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This really shows that the Air Force uses a ***** of electricity.
- Rodalli, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0woot, woot. Go AMD!
- JaggedEdge, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0was about to say ...AMD #13 on the list running on 100% renewable....amazing.
- blhack, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2how could the airforce be the #1 Green energy useR!?
Michael Moore told me that bush wanted to come into your house and steal your tv and rape you girlfriend, doesn't he REPRESENT THE ENTIRE UNITED STATES!!?1?!?! - Izanagi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Great to see.
- tgelston, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Cool beans - my county is a suprising #22 and yes my wife and I opted for a 5% energy from wind - so we are a small, small part of that total. There is some small hope for the future.
- punisher18, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0but that crunch shouldnt exist at all wit hthe technology we have today, if only wed put forth the darn effort to use it . i mean we can make oil people !
- bryan8m, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Great list. Each of those companies gets a plus in my book. It's a good example for others to go even farther.
- cheese06, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@hordak,
can you give me some sources as to when the "good people" were "forced" out? I'd like to see solid proof before making remarks like these. - tburke261, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Go airforce!
- m4ff3w, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I used to work for Austin Energy :)
- beeswax, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0A couple of points.
First about Whole Foods, in response to marktwen. Most stores are actually pulling off the grid. However, what Whole Foods did is bought wind credits for all the energy they are using in all of their stores, in the US, Canada, and England, as well as all of the regional offices, bakehouses, distribution centers, AND central headquarters in Austin. Check here for the official press release: http://www.wholefoodsmarket.com/company/pr_01-10-06.html
This doesn't mean that the stores are using the wind power directly, but rather the power they use is being pumped back into the grid from a green source. This was an easy way to generate green power for the entire company, rather than attempting to find 100% local solutions, which I'm sure would not be possible.
Also, don't go being completely fooled by AMD's good choice to buy wind power. I applaud them for purchasing wind power for all of their Austin power. However, I would point you to http://www.moveamd.com to see what they are attempting to do to some precious land in Austin. Basically they want to put their office on top of an environmental recharge zone for an Aquifer. While you are there let them know that this sort of thing is not okay! - anthonares, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Those aren't necessarily the top 25 purchasers of green energy. It's a list of the top 25 purchasers from a list of their partners. So it's not representative of all US companies, just those that are part of the EPAs "Green Power Partners" program.
- LiquidNight, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wow, I'm a student at AISD (#16 on the list),
I had no idea that they used renewable energy. - sparsely, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0cool article!
not really surprising to me though, seeing as the US Government probably funds & operates in some way a large portion of such power producers - gotpaint547, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0never new the place i live (SD) used that much reusable energy
- marktwen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Whole Foods...I think that's just for their Austin headquarters and probably some (all?) of the Austin, TX stores. I worked there for a couple of years and I *know* that our location in Evanston, IL was not renewably powered. We took right off the Commonwealth Edison grid in Chicago, which actually is about 20% nuclear. It's possible that they buy "credits" from somebody like 3 Phase to balance their non renewably-powered locations with "green credits", but I really don't think so. I'm sure it's Austin-only. Not that it's a bad company, more or less. Knew someone there with "Hole Foods" tatted on his arm....after a year or two working there, you'll know why, too.
- rm999, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0One thing that impressed me when I came to san diego is that they run their buses with natural gas. For such a conservative city it's cool that they made #11 on this list.
- Bretso, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Nice!
I like AMD even more now.
13. Advanced Micro Devices / Austin, TX Facilities, 100%, Biogas, Wind - ledavee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0You would think companies like Starbucks would be playing this up a bit more. Seems like it would be great advertising for them.
And it's very cool that the US Airforce is being so green conscious. In the end, it's all about self-preservation though. They realize we can't subsist on oil for too much longer. They also realize that green energy will soon be more effecient, cheaper, and better for homeland security - danimal247, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Sure, "go Air Force", but look at the percentage of their total usage:
Air Force: 11%
Whole Foods: 100%
The amount is impressive, the percentage is not. - bossm4n, on 10/12/2007, -0/+013. Advanced Micro Devices / Austin, TX Facilities - Another reason to go with AMD. Props to everyone else on the list. Those huge wind turbine farms are an awesome site. I was up close and personal with one last weekend in Lubbock and they are impressive.
- jerbaker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I like that AMD's Austin Fab is on the list and there isn't even one Intel listing.
- Gflat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0USAF = Crap load of Jet fuel ... nice to see that they try to balance the books by using clean energy!
- 4answer2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The Sacramento Intel complex gets their electricity from SMUD. SMUD gets 88% of their electricity from either natural gas, hydroelectric or another category called "eligible renewable". So it looks like one Intel campus is doing OK.
I use AMD chips myself though.
http://www.smud.org/about/power/index.html - neelm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0When I was in the Air Force, 1994-1999, we were in the process of converting all of our on base trucks and cars to an alternate fuel. I can't recall what the fuel was, but they were able to retro-fit gas engines to use it so it didn't require new trucks. The Air Force also maintained several wildlife preserves and went though huge lengths to make sure any area we tested out jets in didn't disturb the land below.
I think this helps moral (along with the other benefits)... sure, at the end of the day we kill people for a living, but we keep it to just people. - dschn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@junto
I was following you up until you brought up something completely unrelated (CIA) and then I realized it was just another Amerikkka post. - Rggoalie3, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Wow, I'm impressed by "Whole Foods Market"
Here is a company using Renewable energy at all of their location in the US, Canada and the UK. :-O There is one here in Phoenix and I think I just found my new grocery store. I search high and low on their site for a mention of this listing and found none. It's refreshing to find a company doing this not for PR, but for the core-issue. - HeroicLife, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Unsurprisingly, the list is dominated by government agencies and enviro-nut oriented companies - that is, organizations that either feed off enviro-hysteria, or can simply steal more of your money to make up for their waste. If you are looking to avoid investing in companies that waste your money, this is a list to watch.
- doctorwhen, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Oh, so few liberal universities...
- fridge2k, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1@ cheebsmoker44 (0)
LOL so you can work less? God damn. - ZrO-1, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I think the percentages are more telling than the total wattage. I say support the companies that are 50% or more. They are the ones really making strides.
- Junto, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Are we not supposed to be *cough* an intelligent bunch here on Digg? May I please refresh your memories to the now quite infamous line, "Lies, damn lies and statistics". Please read the list carefully once again.
The USAF is top because of the the way in which the data is skewed and biased. It is at the top simply due to the sheer volume of electricity it uses; actually twice as much as the number 2 spot! It uses just 11% renewables, which doesn't compare to well to 100%; a slap on the back for using any though - very noble. Hence it is still pumping out 89% of nasty carbons into the atmosphere, so let's not all kiss each others asses quite yet.
Really the list order should be changed to be sorted by percentage and the USAF would be near the bottom. Common folks, is it too early for ya-all? The website is sponsored by the EPA for god's sake.
Have you Americans still no ability to see through your government's thin veil of constant propaganda? Face up to it, you're being suckered on all levels. I know it feels bad to admit it, but at some point you're gonna have to. Mr George Bush is laughing at you.
If you're still looking at this comment blankly, saying to yourself "that British fool has got the wrong idea about our country", then try reading the less than glowing history of the CIA on Wikipeda.org: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cia. Now that makes for interesting reading in my book *cough* drug dealers, sorry did I say that out loud?
Maybe they should start a list that estimates the number of civilian deaths caused by countries (directly and indirectly) over the last century (Indochina, Middle East, South and Central America, to name but a few). It probably wouldn't match the UK government over a longer period (we used to be good a slaughtering heathens you know), but we'd still be up there too. I wonder if Germany would be top or the USA. Interesting thought.....
I'll leave you all to ponder on a favourite quote of mine:
Government is instituted for the common good; for the protection, safety, prosperity, and happiness of the people; and not for profit, honor, or private interest of any one man, family, or class of men; therefore, the people alone have an incontestable, unalienable, and indefeasible right to institute government; and to reform, alter, or totally change the same, when their protection, safety, prosperity, and happiness require it.
