- Benjigga, on 10/28/2008, -2/+26So we're going to see a "Top 10 Android Apps" front page post every few days now?
- sloppychris, on 10/28/2008, -0/+11Locale looks badass. From the article:
"A simple, yet savvy idea: Locale alters your phone's settings based on environmental or geographical criteria. For instance, if your battery goes below 20 percent, it can turn off your Wi-Fi. Or it can turn off your ringer if you're within half a mile of your office, for example."
Of course it isn't polished yet, but it's a great example of the power of open source. - Aitese, on 10/28/2008, -0/+8As an iPod Touch 2g owner, I find it hard to find that many useful apps. I mostly have games, and a quick look in the app store will show you by far games are the most represented.
- oblique63, on 10/28/2008, -11/+17I don't think people would like apps taking away their 'copy-paste' privileges...
- coldskool, on 10/28/2008, -3/+8Yes, two actually. The first one is called "Downgrade" and the other is called "Fanboi"
- kenshin128, on 10/28/2008, -1/+6There is more than 50 now, the Android Market just open to the public on Monday(10/27), a lot of new apps were posted.
- mintblogger, on 10/28/2008, -1/+5Its just the beginning. In next few months, the war between iPhone and G1 will really heat up.
- marshallpeck, on 10/28/2008, -6/+9The iphone is a really great device. The G1 is a really great device with a keyboard, copy paste, a nonstandard headphone jack and less gayness.
- marshallpeck, on 10/28/2008, -1/+4I'm getting one tomorrow!
- PrometheusZero, on 10/28/2008, -8/+11Wait, what? Apps install on the phone's 70MB internal memory?
- LukeBeaumont, on 10/28/2008, -2/+5I've got to admit, Locale looks REALLY good. Wish there was a version for the iPhone. :(
- yetAnotherCroc, on 10/28/2008, -0/+2Shocking as it may be I was among those who laughed when the first iPhone was released. No third party apps, no 3G connectivity, ***** camera, no cut and paste, no exchangeable battery. It was a joke to anyone who had lived in the modern mobile era any length of time. The only thing it had going for it was multitouch and a nice UI. Add to that the ridiculous pricing, the lock-in and the spread out release dates. Apple made a crap job of getting it out there on the non-US markets. Of course you Americans were all over it as your cellphone technology and adoption has been lagging behind the rest of the world for years.
I usually read about your crappy service providers with no small amount of amusement at the fact that you let yourselves be ripped of like that. But then I remember that you don't know any better since its unfathomable for you to imagine someone else doing it better. So in the end you have your semi-crappy over-hyped iPhone and I have my cheaper data plan, cheaper phone and above all: Freedom to use it as I see fit.
Oh did I mention that my provider lets me run Skype on my TouchDiamond using the dataplan flatrate? Or that I can thether it to my laptop and use the dataconnection for surfing on that smae dataplan, no questions asked? Thats what freedom means and thats why I would never get an iPhone under the current conditions.

not this week - znicket, on 10/28/2008, -1/+3But given the Open Source community... shouldn't this figure be in the hundreds if not thousands?
Or may it just be the case that Open Source isn't this magic bullet that certain geeks think it is? - 0260, on 10/28/2008, -2/+4I hate the word "app"
- dajuggernaut, on 10/28/2008, -0/+2buried cause everyone know that xkcd comes only 3 times a week
- znicket, on 10/28/2008, -0/+2True - for free apps. And according to popularity not according to "top ten must haves".
- Aitese, on 10/28/2008, -2/+4OK...so what "amazing" iPhone app did you get on the first day? Having access to the app store I have yet to be amazed.
- gkskillz, on 10/28/2008, -0/+2@Soragon
Pandora might be better than imeem, except I can do other stuff while listening to imeem. With the iPhone and lack of background processes, that's not possible. For me, that means the imeem trumps Pandora. - bearcat8543, on 10/28/2008, -1/+2please elaborate on why the software arent comparable
- Soragon, on 10/28/2008, -2/+3Pandora > imeem
- yetAnotherCroc, on 10/28/2008, -4/+5well there were 1.5 million preorders so there are probably a few.
- Proctor, on 10/28/2008, -4/+5AppleApp store still had killer apps the day it came out.
- GTanaka, on 10/28/2008, -0/+1If you look at App Store's top 25 free apps, Pac-Man just dropped to #2 as of yesterday, and that was Pac-Man Lite.
- Proctor, on 10/28/2008, -3/+4I've never used shopsavvy and imeem blows.
- marshallpeck, on 10/28/2008, -0/+1Not an all to great a job picking apps, either. I've seen better ones than PC world decided to highlight there.
- ptsuk, on 10/28/2008, -1/+2Sorry buddie I've showed the G1 to three of my iphone using friends and two said they've "backed the wrong horse" and the third is actually breaking his contract and going with the G1as he is a developer as well.
Your right the two phones can't be put side by side as the iphone completely looses against the g1.
sorry there is a new kid on the block. - webkami, on 10/28/2008, -0/+1... wait till you will start seeing one every morning.
- dbradman56, on 02/26/2009, -0/+1yes, I have the same question too :)

http://talismanclick.com - passedoutghost, on 10/28/2008, -0/+1It'll become the new xkcd.
- jeffburton, on 10/28/2008, -1/+2Of course the first comment would be iPhone related. Because spoiled children from whom attention is diverted for even a second will immediately start crying. Thank goodness one third of all posts in this section of digg are related to Apple products, else the whining would be deafening.
- waspinator, on 10/28/2008, -1/+2Now that Android is open source, does this mean that it can be installed on any device with compatible hardware?
- viksmaester, on 10/28/2008, -1/+2pacman
- KibibyteBrain, on 10/28/2008, -1/+1I don't want to get into the "Who's Cellphone can run the beer app better?" war, but that was in 2007. Comparing Apples to oranges...or Googles? Now, because of the iPhone, quality(well, to appease the users) application lineups are an expectation of this class of smartphones. Not having them, regardless of the quality of the excuse, is definitely not a good thing.
- oblique63, on 10/28/2008, -7/+7not to sound like a fanboi, but Android has only really been out in the open for like a week or two...
- kenshin128, on 10/28/2008, -6/+6Considering that the Android Market has only be open to the public for 1 day, those apps are amazing and the G1 only launch the Android Market only like not even a week ago(Oct.22) .. Much better selection than the iPhone at launch.
- d1a1s1, on 10/28/2008, -1/+1Thats your best argument?? Looks like somebody couldn't afford an iPhone.
- ultmast, on 10/28/2008, -1/+1Pretty much the biggest positive I took from that article, was a nice innovative idea like that. I wish I knew if devs on the iPhone side even had access to that same number of preferences, however.
- ultmast, on 10/28/2008, -3/+3No. Aside from Locale, there's nothing in there close to "amazing".
Developers have had the SDK seeded for quite a while now, so the "open to the public for 1 day" argument is pretty bunk.
And maybe it's better than the original iPhone at launch, but not better than the launch of the iPhone app store. The app store selection at launch day puts this to shame. There's no comparison.
Let's be honest about this. This platform has tons of promise if you're willing to demand better of it. - ultmast, on 10/28/2008, -6/+5I'm sorry, but there's no way you can put those 2 devices side by side and think the G1 is (currently) in the same class as the iPhone. The software is just not there yet, and I don't just mean apps.
Maybe a few months from now, who knows? Only the true fanboy can equate the 2, at present. - Aitese, on 10/28/2008, -3/+2Oh yes...the "bury but don't reply" tactic. Fox news viewer are you?
Any chance of an answer to back up the red thumb bashing? - MirandaJanell, on 10/28/2008, -2/+1marshallpeck: Don't be a 16 year old boy with a cheesy mustache.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sWS0GVOQPs0 - noogymmij, on 10/28/2008, -5/+4imeem and shopsavvy make it better than the iphone already since those apps will never show up in the app store.
- ultmast, on 10/28/2008, -7/+5I've been rooting for some genuine competition in this space, but reviews like this seem to more _showcase_ Apple's lead, than present something to challenge it.
No way to tell what apps might or might not be open? Just 70 MBs of space for apps? Only 50 apps available, none of them even slightly innovative ("Locale" is perhaps an exception)? _One_ crappy, third party video player?
A lot more is needed for this to be taken seriously as any sort of competition to the iPhone. - znicket, on 10/28/2008, -7/+5Only 50 apps available?
PacMan is in the top ten? Those are some slim pickings.
I would have thought that the marketplace would be buzzing with new apps what with all the open source community uniting behind this phone. Why hasn't that happened? - mikephimikephi, on 10/28/2008, -16/+14sorry to sound like a fanboi, but these apps kinda suck compared to what is available in the Apple App Store.
- gplpedia, on 10/28/2008, -3/+0Discover , Share and Contribute information on Android
http://www.gplpedia.com/index.php?id=88&did=16 - yetAnotherCroc, on 10/28/2008, -7/+3what are you on about? The iPhone didn't even have applications its first year (unless you jailbroke it)
- inactive, on 10/28/2008, -5/+1And we're accepting this? Androids? We're all going to die if we allow the creation and development of dangerous robots...don't you people SEE? CAN'T YOU FIGURE IT OUT? WE'RE ALL DOOMED!
- moredown, on 10/27/2008, -30/+26is there one that turns it into an iPhone?
