- SixSider, on 10/12/2007, -5/+46You realize of course that stiletto heels are named after the knife...
- Urusai, on 10/12/2007, -1/+26Is the primary contractor Wayne Industries?
- MikeSD34, on 10/12/2007, -4/+19They call it that because it's a High K(h)eel
- DisposableRob, on 10/12/2007, -3/+16"too much hooker connotation associated with stiletto for it to be a cool name for a military machine."
As opposed to the word's original connotation referring to a dagger? And looking at the boat's profile, I can see why they went with that name. - SixSider, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12http://www.darrelralph.com/assets/knives/newdesign/stiletto-stag1.jpg
- antron, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9The ship from "Tomorrow Never Dies" was based on the Sea Shadow
http://www.fas.org/man/dod-101/sys/ship/sea_shadow.htm
It was only a research vessel. So it really wouldn't have been "commssioned" for active service.
...no Mr. Bond. I expect you to die. - theonlybigboss, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Actualy it reminds me of the boat in that james bond movie, i think it was world is not enouh, but i can't remember. Still this is really cool.
- ersnyder, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10Good call. Guess I should put my beer down and actually read.
- tomkelleher, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6This is interesting, it reminds me of the boat from James Bond, Tomorrow Never Dies. I have a friend who is a Commander in Royal Navy, stationed in San Diego; he told me once that they actually made the "stealth boat" but decommissioned it because it was too costly and such. Like I said, interesting.
- SixSider, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7From the blurb on the page, it appears this is just a proof of hull design, not engines or props or anything else.
- ersnyder, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Im surprised there are actually pictures of the props...in my exp. the military guards the prop design to it's ships very close.
- Osjpr, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5when i hear the word stiletto, i think of the word as it relates to dagger. The last thing on my mind...wait, it's not even on my mind, I completely forgot the shoe existed... is the word stiletto.
- Daem0nX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3That boat is real - I even have a micro-machine model of it from when I was a kid :)
It is the IX-529 Sea Shadow. Pics / Info at http://www.globalsecurity.org/military/systems/ship/sea_shadow-gallery.htm
The IX-529 is neat, but I like the new ship much better.
Damn Antron beat me too it... - Troff, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3... not much of a stealth ship if everyone know what it looks like now, does it?
(note to the humour impaired - that was a joke)
Miles32: so was the Millenium Falcon, what's your point? :-) - bbatsell, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3It looks like you don't know what stiletto means.
- bytefoo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I don't see anywhere in the article mentioning the fact that the Navy SEALs are purchasing these ships. LIke...no where...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yea, I can't believe the Navy would permit pictures to be posted for a new stealth boat they were working on. The pictures were even taken inside the factory which makes me very suspect. Nothing that is done for spec ops is advertised.
- Hagelin, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4There's a Swedish stealth ship that's in production and doesn't look like something from a comic book ;)
the Visby Class corvette:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/in_pictures/3770969.stm - mkoko, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Wouldn't mind taking that for a joyride.
- Wamzlee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It looks...um...hmm...
Why does this remind me of Street Fighter the movie? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2These would make for great stealth duck tours around Boston: http://www.bostonducktours.com/
- Osjpr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2sixsider that is a flick knife, not a stilleto...gg
- zediker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2But that boat does exist. The movie just used mock-up and footage of the real ship. It was an experimental ship testing the feasibility of stealth on open water. While it was a success, when people started asking what that black figure was on the water late at night off of the san-fran bay area, and when pictures of it taken by various people started showing up, the navy decided to disclose its existence. Since then, its been shown as one of those neat experimental craft.
- willcode4beer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2When I first saw how the hull is supposed to reduce wake, I thought hey, this would be a great hull design for a sailboat. The drag from the bow wave is the major speed impediment for a sailboat.
Then digging deeper, I saw this same company produces a sport sailer with the same hull (and no centerboard/daggerboard), the "Wahoo".
I wonder how long before we see this replacing alot of the trimarans out there.
The whole concept of compresing air under the hull to generate lift is just freaking awesome. I bet this could really lead to some cheap fast sailboats. - systimax, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Does anyone undersand how much 6 million can help our schools, water, and other word issues.
Im so glad I pay 10k a year in taxes. - BrianPuccio, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'd rather see SVG charts than flash charts.
- osbjmg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Only $6 million? All carbon - pretty sweet. Very slick insertion vessel. Looks to have minimal offense :(
- cntp, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2nah, it's legit. It has Arneson surface drives on it, and the boat is also on thier website
btw....arneson drives kick ass - got a friend with a little 22 foot boat with one - unfortunatly he's been too cheap to buy the proper propeller for it.
oh yeah - arneson site: http://www.arneson-industries.com/ "M Ship 80' Quad ASD14 Drive Units with Rolla Propellers" - carbontwelve, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1at $6m its cheap... those things they drive about iraq cost a lot more than that... so infact this is a lot better for tax payers =|
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Link to original story:
http://www.defenseindustrydaily.com/2006/02/stiletto-stealth-ships-look-different-ride-different-buy-different/index.php - MoFoKeR, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4maybe i read wrong or its becouse its late..wheres the weaponary g.i.joe ?
- Guder, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Sea Shadow was designed and Built in the Bay Area... I remember watching sail out in the San Francisco bay. And yes it was only a test vessel. That design has bred a whole series of ships of which the Stiletto is only one.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Actually, I found this story linked to a website that tracked military procurement spending. I will post site if you are interested.
- buck09, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I saw this ship a few weeks ago when I was visiting Perl Harbor. It was pretty far away, but I noticed it because of how odd it looked. Unfortunately, you're not allowed to take photos on base...
- ersnyder, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yep, that's it, I've actually seen that in dry dock.
- meatypuffs, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I was under the impression that this was Batman's new boat, to kind of go with his new "ass-kicker" Batmobile from Batman Begins. Truthbetold, this boat would certainly kick ass if it came in black.
- Brak710101, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Looks like the bat-mobile to me.
"Sir, the charges are set!", " Everyone to the bat-moblie!" - ahhell, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2First thing I thought when I saw the pictures was....Is that thing for Batman Begins 2?
- oldcyborg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I think the engines were just added to the rear to give it go, and probably won't be on the final model. At least no more than one, for manuevering. The Hull design lends itself to the proplusion system, as shown on Captain Nemo's ship, Nautilus. (see the League of extraordinary gentlemen)
This is a silent running system, that does not show up on radar except as a big fish. :)
Now all this is speculation on my part, since I don't know anything about it...
Yep
Cyborg - mike_p, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2looks like they've expanded on the idea of SWATH ships (which are fare more stable in the water using twin hulls and a gap between them for waterflow)
Check out SWATH @ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SWATH - PeterMeh, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Not very stealthy... they got pictures of it.
(smile) - einfeldt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1C'mon guys. Isn't this too much attention to be paid to a war machine? Sure, it's a cool-looking machine, but just think what the US could do with this kind of cool design if it were put to civilian uses. Of course, the Internet itself grew out of a military project, and that's the kind of military to civilian conversion that I am talking about. Let's talk about how we can shorten that conversion cycle, and then eventually flip US budgetary priorities so that cool thinks like this get started out of civilian-oriented projects from the word go. In the meantime, this thing isn't cool enough for a digg, IMHO.
- ericesque, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I have to agree with petarch. These do look uber photoshopped. The consistancy of the gray for each angled panel is unrealistically similar in value. Also, in the pic of the back-- the shadowing on the rails are not consistant. The more I look at them, the more certain I am that they are fake.
- hd95, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1$6 million seems cheap. The Stryker Armored Personnel Carriers they cruise the streets of Iraq with are $4 million a pop
- MacGyver2210, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2there's not a whole lot about these pictures that doesn't surprise me. This must've been around and in use for some time if they're just showing us now...there's no way they'd show us their current and most technically advanced SEAL ship on a publicly accessible website. Maybe I'm just paranoid.
- carbontwelve, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1hopfully, its a good design
- carbontwelve, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1it would probably cost $6million to make one as a prop in a holywood film lol
- MoFoKeR, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2yea me to thanks for remembering that awfull movie lol guiles mising on the stern
- Elohir, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1"What's next? stealth hummers?"
Don't knock it til you've tried it. ; ) - Heiliger, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Thunderbirds are Go! Dyna-therms connected!
