Not that there's anything wrong with that. ;-) - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+31Anyone know what #1 and #2 are?
- Neticule, on 10/12/2007, -4/+32Great news! As I always say,
"Digg makes the gigantic mediciney tasting pill of life, go down a little easier."
No, seriously, I always say that... - tdkme, on 10/12/2007, -6/+32This is why I love the Internet! We are deciding what is good and Digg rules.
- meefman, on 10/12/2007, -2/+22Were it not for TechTV being raped by G4, none of these websites like Digg, or twit.tv would've come to fruition. The hardest part is staying on top.
- kpw1179, on 10/12/2007, -5/+22"The rise of Digg marks the growing maturation of online news audiences"
Guess the poster hasn't heard of the "comments" section yet. - dmron, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18Sweet, another story about how awesome digg is! Wow, keep em coming guys! Not only does it make for REALLY interesting reading, it also doesn't make us looks like pompous ***** at all! Oh wait, I'm being totally sarcastic, *****!!!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+22Now if there was only a way to prevent dumb articles making the front page in such short time.
- JQP123, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15"We" being defined as "digg users"? As with many things, this is both good and bad. It's good in that it at least gives you the impression that your input is significant. It's bad in that it can actually work against diversity by always allowing the most popular opinions to dominate. For example, anything involving Ubuntu has a good chance of making it to the front page even if it's redundant and not particularly newsworthy, simply because lots of diggers are Ubuntu fans.
At some point, it starts to take on more of the look of propaganda rather than news. It's like tuning in to ESPN for baseball news and all you get is in-depth coverage of the Yankees over and over again. - ericnmu, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13let them thank us... they're making the fortunes
- 5thfreedom, on 10/12/2007, -4/+14This one got dugg because it has a *GASP* more interesting title!
- fixyourthinking, on 10/12/2007, -9/+18Thing is ... it's not really controlled by the users here ... often stories are manipulated to the top. If your not a well known here ... it's hard to get a good story to the top. DIGG is just as much of a high school geek clique as Slashdot is. I still like it!
- heman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Forrester Research analyst Charlene Li said. "It's not the technology on Digg, it's the community that is really hard for others to duplicate."
now that's a compliment....good job diggers - rhettnyedotorg, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11I totally agree, there's some magic to getting a story to the front page, some comspiracy-ish somethings going on. All too often the front page features lame Apple stuff, stupid Google crap, or for the love of god those idiotic articles regarding the Gaming industry. yawn!
It will be very interesting to see what happens with the new version of digg, will there be categories that we can auto-ignore (like SPORTS?!???!!)
and will i be able to go back to the front page after submitting a comment without hitting "BACK" TWICE? - Arramol, on 10/12/2007, -6/+14Can't be Slashdot, Digg passed it a while back.
- reversial, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9My experience over the last couple months with Digg vs. Slashdot is that Digg tends to get a lot more stories and of greater variety which I find nice. Slashdot on the other hand tends to get much higher quality posts, wither it is because of the moderation system and or an older and more knowledgeable audience or some other reasons I am not sure.
- klacour, on 10/12/2007, -6/+13Are we nerds or geeks. I have always been a bit offended by the nerd term, but relish in geek-dom.
- Dotnetsky, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Well that's all wonderful and warm and cozy. I just wish the mean IQ of all the Diggers were a bit higher. It's not personal or anything, just that some of the most IDIOTIC nonsense gets Dugg to the front page. Stuff that is clearly NOT newsworthy.
- rhettnyedotorg, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9I was thinking Wired and /.
- dosle, on 10/12/2007, -6/+12mmm, relish
- G33k0ft3chz, on 10/12/2007, -5/+11Wow Digg went from 8th to 3rd! Congrats to everyone who manages Digg!
Yey! - nickj6282, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Well foo, it seems that those same jobless, bored people are intent on burying your comment (and probaby my reply), but I agree with you wholeheartedly.
It's the same reason I don't want to play Halo 2 online anymore. Being 24 with a son and two jobs means I can't find more than an hour a week to play, but when I get there it's filled up with jobless (and it's summer so no school) 14 year olds who have nothing better to do. I get pwned in about 5 seconds straight.
Any social network is the same way. It's completely owned and run by those who devote their entire lives to it. Much to the disgust of others. - heydigital, on 10/12/2007, -8/+14Or countless Apple articles praising their system.
- Angostura, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Digg is great for a quick news fix. The comments on Slashdot are, however an order of magnitude more informative, or insightful, on balance (if you set your threshold to +3)
- fooplex, on 10/12/2007, -5/+10Yes the problem with Digg is that the news is slanted toward the interests of those few with a lot of time on their hands. People who are technical in nature, (therefore they use the Internet a lot), yet they're more likely to be either unemployed or working in jobs where they're not very busy. Therefore, naturally the news that makes the front page is slanted toward stories that are either techie, irresistably interesting, or political with a disgruntled, angry-at-The-Man bias.
I don't know about you, but an occasional comment like this is about the only thing I have time for.
What kinds of people do you think actually have time to spend hours and hours promoting and Digging stories for free on Digg all day? What kinds bias would that group be likely to have? (And don't say none--everyone is biased.) - cerisaac, on 10/12/2007, -8/+13I agree. Digg is very much a clique. Still good, but has it's flaws.
- dmron, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7It already does happen. What, you think anyone actually reads techcrunch besides Michael Assington? Why does his crappy site get front page stories every day? Hmm, I wonder...
- scott1, on 10/12/2007, -7/+12@BloodyRids
Digg expanded it's theme form tech realted to anything that diggers would be interstead in. - AggieTales, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8@BloodyRids
Haven't you heard the news for Digg v3.0? its no longer going to be just tech stuff. I openly welcome the redesign. - rhettnyedotorg, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8dupes are discouraged by the submission system, but ignored by people that don't want to play by the rules. i guess that's why the last button is 'submit anyway'
- superhands, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7Excellent stuff, moved from slashdot to here a while back and rarely look at slashdot now.
Well Done Digg:) - Xoligy, on 10/12/2007, -5/+9Yeah some commenters are so stupid they reply to other comments completely off topic just to get their comment higher.
- caldroun, on 10/12/2007, -6/+10Growing Maturation? We can't even get teh Dupe police to stop with all the "Mine was First" or "Look at Mine too"..Pfft.
- poipoipoi, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5AUTO-IGNORE would be awesome (esp. for sports).
I also wouldn't mind the ability to digg up or digg down individuals (as opposed to or in addition to the current block system). - chetanw, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6Yeah - if you are in a select group you can manipulate stories a bit I guess. All said though, as the number of users increases, individual influence will decrease automatically and things will get straightened out.
Way to go, digg!! - eggo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4now with extra dryness protection...
- internbrian, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5According to the Alexa.com list of top 500 English language websites digg.com is listed 57th overall. In terms of other tech news websites above that CNET.com is ranked 37 and the only other 'tech' related site above digg I guess is SourceForge at 45 (maybe someone else knows what the other tech site is). Wired.com is not in the top 100 and Slashdot is ranked 86.
Also, if you look at the top United States sites digg is 35! - newevilmind, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Although all s of these words (Geek, Nerd, Dork) are used in a somewhat interchangeable way, in my vocabulary the usage of each is different.
A geek is someone with an interest in technology, with an emphasis on intelligence.
A dork is someone that is very uncool.
So when I say "I am a geek", or "Tom is a dork" all of my friends know exactly what I mean by that, within the context. - 15charmaxwtf, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Yea, an excelent way to bash celebrities.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4what "right wing biased algorythym [sic]"?
- dc2447, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Why can't they fix http://digg.com/mobile
- TylerDurden0, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I disagree with the author that the studios need only flood the shelves with titles and roll-back DVD production.
This is not necessary for a format to prosper. A user has to feel some sort of value and worth from the technology and the same titles that are available on DVD is not the answer. I want to know what I am getting in return for upgrading. These little plastic discs are costing the studios $5 including all the box art and *****. Try setting the cost at a 200% markup and then maybe I will pony up. I'd pay $15-20.
The players. Why are they so damn expensive? What's the reason for all the delays? That does not exude confidence especially considering the major pusher of the format cannot even get their player out the door. $500 is a lot to ask, $1000 is just telling me you don't want me to bother. DVD players can be found for $20. Try setting the price at $200 and watch me come a-running. Until I am thoroughly impressed, don't come around sniffing at my wallet at those prices. - Mace37, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6I've always prefered nerd to geek. Nerd implies intelligence, geek just implies a tech interest. But I don't know if that's accurate. I think Milhouse said it on the Simpsons once.
- TylerDurden0, on 10/12/2007, -0/+23 blades now?
- wonderboy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Wasn't it suppose to be like different sections of the site for different categories? Like tech.digg.com and sports.digg.com.
- cerisaac, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3The "Buried Stories" container needs to get here quick too.
- rhettnyedotorg, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3new versions of digg will keep this from getting too crazy. i'm sure there are controls in place, and that they change from version to version. don't they?
- deepsub, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Whether or not Digg remains strictly technical is a moot point with the advent of Digg 3.0.
The point, is, they took the concepts originated by sites like Slashdot and Fark and turned into a slick, AJAX based meritocracy that does away with alot of what makes Slashot and Fark stink.
It allows the the thinking individual and collective to be heard loud and clear by a wide audience in ways that /. and Fark cannot.
Go Digg! :D - eryx, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3so who is # 1 and #2 ?
- mobius8, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Or for that matter, who comprises the top 10 technology news web sites?
