- Puppetfunk, on 10/10/2007, -20/+151Why would Kevin care? All he cares about now adays are Pownce and his other side projects.
- Teaboy, on 10/10/2007, -4/+87The ROGUE page about The ROGUE Digg Pictures page! How it only took 7 diggs to overload the server!
http://www.duggmirror.com - Speed, on 10/10/2007, -11/+79I know I'm gonna be buried for this, but whatever.
Just because one user managed to make a standalone site for pictures doesn't mean it's that simple to integrate into Digg. Yes, they should be working on it, but which is more pressing: a pictures section so we can all look at lolcats on Digg or fixing the damn comment system? How about lolcats vs. people gaming the system (which EVERYONE bitches about)? We always say they aren't doing anything and expect them to fix things as fast as big companies and such, when Digg only have like 14 employees. And honestly guys, Digg is supposed to be a news site, not the next Flikr.
And no, I don't think the picture section is going to be used for much more than lolcats. - GMorgan, on 10/10/2007, -6/+58Crashing IE isn't a bug, it's a feature.
- Hedgehogboy, on 10/10/2007, -1/+51http://digpicz.com/
- paulajohnw, on 10/10/2007, -6/+51Resubmit everyday and digg it to the front page.
- jmpeagle, on 10/10/2007, -10/+48Whose right? His constitutional right? I am confused by YOUR possessive in front of "right".
- esotericguy, on 10/10/2007, -3/+40LOL!!!!1!! HES RYGHT! WE DONT NEED NO SPELING AN GRAMAR OUT HEAR IN DA INTERWEBS!!!
- DocHoliday22, on 10/10/2007, -2/+36"...they're going through many cycles of design and testing so...", only to end up getting it all wrong? How many months have people been complaining about the comment system? It causes Browser Crashes (NO more need for Internet Explorer - Digg will crash it for you). You can't even reply to someone without scrolling down to find "their" reply link- IT'S FCUK'ed.
- mr1337, on 10/10/2007, -2/+34The blog post about how he did it is down. The actual site - http://www.digpicz.com/ - isn't down.
- Nobiting, on 10/10/2007, -4/+28This article describes the code behind the scenes, next time read.
- vatechtigger, on 10/10/2007, -4/+25The Code He Has, The Server He Has Not........
- shawnz, on 10/10/2007, -0/+20neither does your comment, apparently
- 1ofMany, on 10/10/2007, -1/+19Digg has ads?
(turns adblock plus off)
"Oh my!" - PhairOh, on 10/10/2007, -1/+19More than a pictures section, what I want are the descriptions for videos. Where did those go?
- bairy, on 10/10/2007, -2/+19"I know I'm gonna be buried for this, but whatever."
I hate people that say that. It runs along with teenagers who put "I know I'll be banned for this but.." on forums. Stop assuming the worst and just say what you're gonna say dammit!
That aside, I agree with you... mostly. Yes on a site this size with all the factors involved, 7 hours is probably a fantasy. But then there's another side... this site is mostly inhabited by geeks, some of whom can program very well. It's bizarre to think that digg can't get access to coders who can build such a system in less than the several months it's already taken.
As for the comments system.. If they've designed it well they could change that code within a day or two. Again, it's taking weeks.
Websites like this are high maintainence, true, but come on, it's not like there'd be a shortage of volunteers who could help out. - ttfadia, on 10/10/2007, -13/+29There's alot more that goes into rolling out a new feature (however simple it seems) on a high-profile site like digg. If they're doing it right, they're going through many cycles of design and testing so it's going to take a bit longer than someone hacking the functionality together.
- mentor972, on 10/10/2007, -0/+15Oh really, try clicking on it, dumbass
- rootstyle, on 10/10/2007, -3/+18Do people not learn? Diggs == a good representation of traffic received
Its a snowball effect, more diggs means more people will want to click it. Few diggs? Either it really sucks or nobody has visited it yet.
P.S. Caps lock is not cruise control for cool, the motivational image lied to you. - pkrumins, on 10/10/2007, -0/+13Hey guys! I finally managed to make the post statically cached! WHEW!
Working on a server with load 300+ is no fun. Whew, I am happy that the site is back.
For all the others wondering what I made. Digg's picture site: http://digpicz.com
Have fun and tell me what more you would want me to make for Digg :) - MavRevMatt, on 10/10/2007, -4/+17Read the article "bitch".
- RadiantBeing, on 10/10/2007, -3/+14This is the sort of thing that should be going up on Digg Labs. Also, a new comment system.
- mydickhertz, on 10/10/2007, -2/+12No much to worry about since the server already tanked.
- hiPpymIck, on 10/10/2007, -1/+10id like to see good photos of something interesting or funny - same as a video
but i dont think id want to just see loads and loads of (admittedly well executed) technical shots...
if they included voting on comments on Flickr - itd probly be better than using Digg - civperc, on 10/10/2007, -2/+11Because is makes sense for everyone with a little blog to have a dedicated server, right?....... Get off your tech nazi high-horse already
- tempusrob, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8Copyright issues? Digg would only be linking to images, no? The same way it links to any other content.
- mr1337, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8Creating a thumbnail for a link is considered Fair Use in most, if not all, cases.
- kenvsryu, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8I need a photo section so that I can avoid them. I've emailed the dude to make a ron paul/spam section also.
- MavRevMatt, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8'Cause you know exactly how many hits he's gotten right?
- BESTenemy, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9The site brings back memories - Digg with one section and no ads! Ahh, those were the days!
- civperc, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8it's not a friggin' double post
- skyfire1, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7Digg doesn't need a pictures section. Digg needs a MrBabyMan section.
- viewdrix, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8That's all well and good, but isn't the outcry about a picture section about getting pictures out from cluttering the news section more than people wanting a feed of only pictures? It seems like an impractical placeholder in the meantime.
- blazes816, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7But see, on Digg, they have more than 2 users.
- pault107, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Nice poem.
- Fhwqhgads, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6would take less than 7 hours i would think. this comment system is manure straight from a horse's rear end.
- Slacker1031, on 10/10/2007, -5/+10I'm sorry but a section dedicated to lolcats and porn isn't what digg needs. thats fine if your a prepubescent 12 year old boy, but thats not the audience digg caters to.
- toxicvarn90, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Rose doesn't program this site, what's he to take notes on?
- ilkeryoldas, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5better comments system please
- WaterDragon, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6All this talk about Kevin Rose...
Has it occurred to anyone else that he should be a guest on the Colbert Report? - elpepe, on 10/10/2007, -2/+7Just like "alright" / "all right" can be used to spot retards.
Way to fail. - Atomic1fire, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6and its not blog spam
this is the guy who created it's blog
your just another idiot who thinks every blog is that stupid overused word....
blogspam
this is not the following
stupid
pointless
annoying
so by all definition
its not spam - DivineLackey, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4You are 100% correct. That's what I do for my site when I want to add new features, and it is a scalable site. I won't name it so I don't get dugg down for self promotion lol. CODE REUSE. It's not only legit, its the only smart thing to do.
- Atomic1fire, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Imo
if they made the source open
they could increase the features but with other problems to factor
such as licensing, hosting the source and maintaining it and a strong increase of competitors who use the source
but then again they could always license it to prevent money making,,, - theprez, on 10/10/2007, -3/+7YOU'RE!
- IllBeBack, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5No.
- Onyxblaze, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5They still show up in the RSS which I don't like.
- MavRevMatt, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4And if not, tough ***** to the copyright holder.
- MavRevMatt, on 10/10/2007, -6/+10Of course, the server will be down before anyone can see it... Wordpress?
