- Popdmb, on 10/12/2007, -1/+98Don't confuse me with facts. I'm still convinced they bought it because Sergey Brinn had a crush on lonelygirl15 ...
- junkking, on 10/12/2007, -7/+100Perfect Digg Article
- PepperMinty, on 10/12/2007, -8/+79Amen.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+37Dugg for simplicity and the bottom line. Thanks.
- optimus_maximus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+31Perfect way to express facts instead of an opinion.
Now in regard to profits, is there a graph for that? And does this mean YouTube will charge for copyright protected videos (instead of letting us create new profiles and uploading it again)? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+31Google Video was better in that you could increase or decrease the size of the video on the fly. It was better in that there was absolutely no lag between clicking on the video link and starting to watch the video, with no re-buffering. It was better because the interface was cleaner and less cluttered.
YouTube, on the other hand, was better because it created a true community. It allowed you to track uploaders and other users very easily. It allowed anyone to comment on the videos very easily. It had features like private messaging, far superior video organization options (channels, etc), and always encouraged you to rate videos and sort by rating, whereas Google Video included the rating option as an afterthought.
So, which was better? Clearly it was YouTube. If they now allow you to scale their video sizes as easily as Google and increase their bandwidth, then it'll be really great. - DASH, on 10/12/2007, -2/+23Right no name... just all the ads!
- somerandomdude, on 10/12/2007, -8/+27Well, DUH! Who here thought that Google Video was doing better than Youtube? Show of hands? Anyone? No? Didn't think so. Thanks for the graph though. It goes well with my other pc games, like clock.
- UrlorJkron, on 10/12/2007, -1/+19While YouTube definately had more viewership than Google videos, I can't help from think that this is skewed a bit. Why search for google videos when you are already at google?
- dylanwalker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13I think there is a lot of misinterpretation going on here. Its dangerous to look too much into google trends plots.
For example, who is going to google the term "google video" when they can click the button above the query form? Google queries such as "____ video" that (successfully) yielded google video hits will not show up in this trend comparison.
You can be sure the trend of the term "youtube" had an impact on the decision, but this is likely not an apples-to-apples comparison. - burnt1ce85, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14Take that JOHN C DVORAK!
- FishyJoe, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11Ah yes, the tried and true internet bubble method of extrapolating current growth into long term growth.
- lrdscruffybttm, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11Yeah but we all know that YouTube should buy your mom.
http://www.google.com/trends?q=youtube%2C+your+mom&ctab=0&geo=all&date=all - Zoids, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13I thought google video was better, maybe just for the fact they let you download psp compatible videos without having to encode them.
- Graeleight, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9That reminds me. I need to pick up some beer on the way home.
http://www.google.com/trends?q=me%2C+beer&ctab=0&geo=all&date=all - ScottMitchell, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12The REAL reason is because the founders are two savvy, well-spoken, attractive business men with steel sharp minds and phenomenal salesmanship skills.
http://youtube.com/watch?v=QCVxQ_3Ejkg - cuzican, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11very true.. google knows that getting your name out there is worth the price tag alone..
- TargetDigg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Could someone explain how this is cromulent?
- Lord_oftheTrons, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6You need a space between the comma and the second string to get those to work. Just FYI.
- Uruviel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Typical. And a perfect reason if popularity of search terms was an absolute indicate of profitability. But it's not. And right now, despite google having major advantages in infrastructure, I do not see how ad and banner campaigns on googleTube would make up for the tremendous amount of bandwidth. Not to mention the possible lawsuits in copyright violation. Because unlike peer-to-peer networking hosting something on a server is in fact your responsibility.
- milkmage, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8@junkking - yeah, especially since so many 'readers' don't actually read - the graph sums it up.. if you can beat them, buy them.
@scott1 - then click on the links on the left of the graph - tehnico, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I think they just don't like spain. So they rebel.
- mattvogt, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6Or perhaps Bob Barker should by Your mom.
http://www.google.com/trends?q=your+mom%2C+bob+barker - afreytes, on 10/12/2007, -5/+8It's clear that Microsoft should buy Google(http://www.google.com/trends?q=google%2Cmicrosoft&ctab=0&geo=all&date=all), and Slashdot should buy Digg! (http://www.google.com/trends?q=slashdot%2Cdigg&ctab=0&geo=all&date=all)
/ducks - weareglass, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5I think it's a good match, if anyone can figure out a way to monetize YouTube, it's Google
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This graph, although a good representation of the number of people searching for google video vs. youtube, does not accurately represent their popularity. There would be no reason to search for google video on google when there is a link to video.google.com right there above the search bar. Obviously, youtube is more popular than google video, but I'm just stating a point.
- nofxjunkee, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3And youtube's player has sync issues which are really annoying. Being able to just download for iPod/PSP is also sweet, and you can jump anywhere in the video using Google's player. I hope they improve that POS youtube player first.
- thenewmadmax, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3another intresting one:
http://www.google.com/trends?q=warcraft%2C+paris+hilton&ctab=0&geo=all&date=all - hostilefreak, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Not to mention that Google will get a real big userbase for their other services.
- nixdoctor, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4"We're sorry.

Holy diggers dugg Google down! - Sparks123, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I liked the way you stated your article!!!
- samgab, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1hahaha, to the thought of some exec at google sitting at his desk googling youtube vs google video on google trends, and then saying to his exec peers: "Hey guys, let's buy youtube."
- HonoredMule, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Do I detect a hint of sarcasm?
- shamitpatel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1this is just a good marketing campaign that google is persuing. GOOGLE ROCKS!!!
marketing locus, inc.
http://www.marketinglocus.com - author20, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Google video was simply not supported. Google has already degraded to the point that they can't manage their new departments. If the president and founders had cared to audit their own site they would have seen remarkable omissions and shortcomings.
For example, they don't tell you that you must upload the videos to make them work, and they don't have a single example of embedded video. They have convoluted instructions and when you get an email back from support it seems like you are talking to a dumb robot. The shame of it is -- they are human. Silicon Valley arrogance has captured Google and I"m hoping that ASK or somebody offers better search services so that the monopoly ends. - shamitpatel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Video link was a part of google labs for a long time. The link for video just started recently.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Who'da thunk it?
And the award for best thunk digg ever goes to... Knio. - virologydustin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1My thoughts exactly
- wingnut21, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Google plans to not put their label on youtube. That's not saying they won't, but surprisingly, that's the plan for now.
- totorototoro, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Whats up with Lisbon?
- xcrypt, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3o rly?
- rabidg00se, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Hehe. Cromulent.
- waveslam, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Everyone brings my mom to the prom?! The bastards. Still, explains why she is never home when I call her.
- krakkinem, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2This is a smart move because Google Video sucked, in my opinion, even if just for the fact that it was visually boring. The layout was way too plain. It felt like a fleamarket, whereas YouTube felt like a real community.
- foolfromhell, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Netscape outstrips Digg by a bit since a lot of stupid people dont realize that Netscape sucks
- SulFuRus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Just Add sense I guess. And I don't care. Is not like MySpace adds.
- valehru, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Well to be honest I think Google are not catering to a global market right now with Google Video. Perhaps you are unaware of this but Google video is completely unavailable in China! Anyhow, it doesnt make much sense to cut 1.4 billion people out of the equation, however when you make a deal with China it often kicks you in the ass later.
I wonder if youtube.com will now suddenly not be available over here. gah, now where will I get my daily show fix? - J3Holaday, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Actually, she was what finally made the deal.
- SulFuRus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1dude, I'm happy for those guys.
- saska, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I predict it'll take approximately three more acquisitions of competitors.
Less than three if they manage to dilute YouTube into something people no longer love. -
