- paulyj1124, on 10/11/2007, -6/+88I thought the worst part was USA threatening Sweden with a WTO ban. Who are we to force another country to do what we want it to do? Sorta like what were doing in another country....=]
- limpits, on 10/11/2007, -4/+53foreigners? i was born and raised here and i steal ***** all the time. welcome to the internet buddy. sue me.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -3/+40pshh if i owned that island i would try to get the U.S. to declare war on me. single handedly gain the support of 5.7 billion people.
- tomarocco, on 10/11/2007, -2/+26Sue me, too. It's the MPAA/RIAA that are stealing America's families' hard-earned dollars.
- slugicide, on 10/11/2007, -1/+23That's basically the primary function of the WTO. The WTO is, by definition, anti-democratic.

You've got the right idea and I respect you for it. ***** the RIAA. If you make music, distribute it yourself and take charge of issues like sales and DRM. If your favourite musical artist releases via one of the RIAA big four labels, they are advertising their support of suing their fans. I write my own music and distribute it online for free as well (www.demodulated.com).
A while ago I found the website of DJ Amber from San Francisco (http://iamthedj.com/). I downloaded a bunch of free mixes from her site and absolutely loved them. I loved one (Live with Family and Friends) so much I bought a CD from her for $10. It arrived in my mailbox in just one week, autographed!! You wholeheartedly get my digg.
It's okay to ask for money for your music, but it's not okay to demand it. I say Amber and you, jakkukun, represent the music industry of the future - an industry of artists, not businessmen. - scottykempf, on 10/11/2007, -2/+20Drink up me hearties Yo Ho!!
You know, the other day I had an interesting thought. The three Pirates of the Caribbean movies glamourize the lives of pirates. Disney has made Billions of dollars off of these movies. But arent Disney being hypocrites when they go after someone for downloading Pirates of the Caribbean????? - xXShadowstormXx, on 10/11/2007, -3/+20Arrrr.
- lukeo, on 10/11/2007, -3/+20put people in jail for using bit torrent? thats the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard on Digg... and I hear a lot of ridiculous things here....
- Radan, on 10/11/2007, -3/+17Look it's sergeant America who has absolutely no clue about the mere existence of anything outside his oh so beloved continent. We Swedes steal as much from ourselves as we do from everyone else, including the all mighty U.S of A.
So lots of love from the country with the chocolate without cacao, and the utterly worthless crap of furniture.
Snälla, gå och gräv ner dig någonstans, din inkompetenta, nationalistiska idiotjävel. - Radan, on 10/11/2007, -0/+11Yeah, I was really pissed when I heard about it the first time. Though, something that I really don't get is that someone in Sweden is doing something which technically legal in that country, but is illegal in some other country. Now how does that make it our (the Swedes) problem?
I mean isn't the actual problem not that TPB is sharing files, but the fact that someone in a country where it is illegal, gets his hands on the files?
This is like if a country where it is illegal to wear blue T-shirts starts threatening another country for selling such shirts to its own people.
Or have I misunderstood the situation completely? - tomarocco, on 10/11/2007, -4/+14I pirate, therefore I am. That is the only justification I need. The moralists and rationalists can walk the plank.
- Z_Man, on 10/11/2007, -4/+13It's really been a year? I didn't realize. Wow, time flys when you're pirating... :)
- nogami, on 10/11/2007, -3/+12I think it would be more accurate to say he "infringes on copyrights", and "no, he's not a 'potential customer', or a 'lost sale' because he never would have purchased the product in the first place".
I sometimes wonder what the effect would be of a major publisher (say, Adobe) dropping the price of a product (say, Photoshop) to $79 instead of the $650 it's listing for now. I'm willing to bet they'd make more money selling at lower price and at a higher volume... - iPoodz, on 10/11/2007, -1/+9http://static.thepiratebay.org/dreamworks_response.txt
This is one of the funniest responses by the Pirate Bay staff.
These people who complain are not smart enough for the cunning minds behind this great site :D - Kookami, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8I loved this quote from their blog explaining the event posted shortly after they got the site back up:
'Just some stats...
... here are some reasons why TPB is down sometimes - and how long it usually takes to fix:
Tiamo gets *very* drunk and then something crashes: 4 days
Anakata gets a really bad cold and noone is around: 7 days
The US and Swedish gov. forces the police to steal our servers: 3 days
.. yawn.' - killerofkiller, on 10/11/2007, -6/+13kudos for someone to find the original story from last year about the raid

B) A Troll - someidiotinnj, on 10/11/2007, -2/+8and paying 18$ including tax for a cd that has one good song is justifiable?

- kitwaites, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4@FatDog789
If the artist was paid a fair amount from a CD sale, then I'd buy CDs.
If the record companies invested in interesting artists rather than crap sugary pop, I'd buy CDs.
If I wasn't treated like a criminal with DRM restrictions, I'd buy music downloads.
As it is, if I pay for music the money goes straight into a record exec's pay packet. I'd rather save the money to go to concerts, where the artist gets a fair share. - saltmiser, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4http://www.flickr.com/photos/saltmiser/527133895/
that's some pretty 1337 news :D - specialK16, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3*music*
Do what you want cause a pirate is free,
You are a pirate
*end music* - MWeather, on 10/11/2007, -2/+5Theft involves depriving someone of something they own. Music and software piracy doesn't not deprive anyone of their music or software.
- Travelsonic, on 10/11/2007, -4/+6Obviously you can't completely take it like a man since you are only making your point with a non-sequitur, "stealing is stealing," which is true, but is in this discussion, irrelivant as piracy is not theft, is not rape, is not vandalism - they are different, maybe in wrongness one can have them on similarities, but this is not absolute, people think severity different, but please, don't confuse fact with opinion.
- isleshocky77, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3Hey, it's messed up and it goes both way with the US. Ever heard of the Bounty Hunter? His story is really messed up.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Duane_Chapman#2006_arrest_and_extradition_proceedings - waterdrop, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I didn't know Digg had ads either until I booted up my old PII system which doesn't have Adblock for Firefox or IE7pro installed.
- QuimZ, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1When I need a creative suite for professional use...yes, I do purchase it with my hard earned money...
When I see something I want that I'd never buy with my money...bt bitch. - rulezgetbent, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1painters often don't have a lot of money. real artists usually don't have a lot of money.
why? because they are usually more public with their work, and don't always get paid a lot.
likewise, the work of these kind of artists are usually much more impressive then the ones who have "sold out" so to speak.
same with music. Musician are artists. if you are going to be true, and make quality work, you cant expect to get rich off it. Then the music becomes soul-less. your "art" becomes artless. You are now more entrepreneur than artist. - Travelsonic, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1scratched, you provided absolutely no substance to your statement... please elaborate.
- ThDecider, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1YArrrgh Long live the pirate bay! May all who oppose them be sodomized with retractible batons! YarrrRgh

"i'm an artist that tries to make a living playing music."
My advice to you is...stop trying to make a living playing music. The whole scene is in the process of shedding it's old skin and becoming a new creature.
The internet is making it possible for everyone to become an instant entertainer. The days of spending alot money on entertainment are coming to a close. - Smokerillo, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0don't forget about the odd things that aren't available anywhere..can't order them.. had they made these things available to me I might have bought them before i thought about downloading them...some record company crying about not making enough bread could have made a few bucks off of it. guess they've got more important things to do...
http://www.mininova.org/tor/689677 sure helps with that :)
long live tpb cheers! - cassmith, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0"Unless the major labels give up their obscene profit margins, triple their artist royalty rates, and stop defrauding the consumer with unnecessarily high cd prices, anyone with half an ounce of sense in their heads will continue downloading their music for free, and who can blame them. "
'nuff said. - scarwars, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0i'm a hoodlum and proud of it
- everfalling, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1as interesting TPB's story is, and how they've survived such attacks, it still isn't a terribly good torrent tracker. i use demonoid, isohunt and torrentspy because the selection is far superior. TPB's community needs to get some content going or something, cause it's not one of my first sites to check for new, or obscure files.
- ipwnfaces, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0wtf is with the font color on these articles??
- MavRevMatt, on 10/11/2007, -3/+2The Bay is awesome namely for telling the MPAA/RIAA/whatever to STFU. I'm not for stealing money from the artists, for they don't get much to begin with, but I'm all for making the record companies realise what they're doing to the artists is totally wrong.
- chiggah, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1Problem is though, MPAA is constantly monitoring trackers on TPB. From what I know, the waves after waves of DMCA letters you receive from your ISP are majority from them.
- kalrhael, on 10/11/2007, -15/+14mikecampbell is right, if you're going to pirate, don't come up with excuses to justify it, stealing is stealing. Hell I admit, I pirate games, music and programs. Do I try and justify it? No, I take it like a man and admit it for what is is.
I don't care if you do nothing but pirate your entertainment, just please don't try and justify it. - woyo, on 10/11/2007, -1/+0wow@people saying distributing content or downloading content is stealing.
wow.
i like going to an area sandwich stand, they give free samples of their sausage, good stuff (nope, i'm not vegan).
i can take that sample and give it to someone else or my dog. Dominick's of NY.
by saying that i am advertising for them and it helps them. now whether or not Metallica think they are a household name worldwide and the only way you should get their product is by buying it from them... i put forth that lots of people in china have never heard of them.
anyone who downloads content or uploads content is part of the whole distribution schemata, if they like what they got they are more prone to talk about it. the more people that merely know of something, without even experiencing the content... (only hearing about it secondhand) ...that content is in wider distribution, if only in knowledge of the content. the more people that merely know of some content, the more likely it is that people will buy it. i myself have probably bought 4 copies of dark side of the moon over the years, i wanted THE CD with the prism and spectrum and the case and cover. ever had a good knife? lost it? dulled it? bought the same knife again because you liked it? (nothing lasts forever)
sharing music or movies or apps (or god forbid (gasp) text files) makes whatever content more widely known, you think it is a bad thing for CocaCola that the name of their product is one of the most known words/phrases (if you count it as 2 words) in the world? i think that would tend to ensure that cocacola will be a viable product for years to come, people knowing about your content's good qualities will not hurt your content in the marketplace. people Selling bootlegs is entirely different than people getting the content for free. worst case scenario: everyone in the world downloads the new album by the band flubububork (made it up) wow, everyone in the world just downloaded flubububork, and they didn't get a cent! those poor guys! gosh they are hard up! man it sucks to be them! gee, those poor guys, everyone just downloaded their stuff and didn't pay, everyone seems to like it though, They rAwk! those poor guys, man it suck how they got ripped off, unless, ...maybe... wow, you think they have a chance of booking a gig anywhere? a tour? hmmm, household name, they should do alright playing any venue they want. in fact, maybe now they have a chance to sell a few cd's. i think what QuimZ was poking at is that good content will sell and crap is crap; lots of people will try crap they haven't heard of to see if it is good and if it is, they are more prone to rave about it and spread the good word that it isn't crap.
i am afraid the guild of glaziers may be after me for illegally replacing a window pane without being a guild member.
it is already illegal to take a sh*t wherever you want, if the riaa had their say it would be illegal to give a sh*t.
i like sharing good stuff and promoting others to enjoy the content i enjoy.
Soulseek! Bittorrent! Opennap! (ya know, like WinMX, Lopster, Xnap, etc; serverlists at gotnap site)
if you think downloading something freely given, and increasing the fan base of whatever content in question, ...is stealing... then you should Seich Help!

We're behind you Pirate Bay! - mcfedr, on 10/11/2007, -4/+1what a rubbish thing to say...as if all the things people copy come from america, as if your taxes fund music/tv/film companys
and why should your idea's about how law should be, be inforced in a county where these laws dont exist, for whatever reason...can you not respect the right of other people to have there own laws, there own ideas, in there own country, and not be scared of america walking around with its over funded (yes thats where all your tax dollars are going) army trying to force the world into its 'democracy'...which is somewhat flawed allowing people like george bush to be president... - dxred, on 10/11/2007, -3/+0Time goes by fast..
