The reason is having lots of smaller files it's much easier to resume a file transfer if one fails. This is no longer an issue with newer file transfer protocols like torrents, but older things like ftp and irc required it.

- hansonc, on 07/31/2008, -0/+2In this age where everyone is using torrents to distribute large files and is using high speed internet access to do so, it doesn't even remotely make sense to cut a file up into a bunch of archives. As for 7-zip I tend to ignore those files too. Every modern operating system supports good old zip out of the box, the minute space savings of the archive isn't worth the hassle of installing and the space taken up by rarely used program to extract them.
