- Havs, on 10/10/2007, -7/+194Remember all the donations people made when they were going to buy an island? I'm sure this report makes anyone who donated feel a little gullible.
- mablco, on 10/10/2007, -7/+146I always forget about ads. I never see them. firefox adblock plus!
- agent888, on 10/10/2007, -1/+111Real Pirates would have just taken an Island by force!
- SteelChicken, on 10/10/2007, -5/+88I couldn't believe people were stupid enough to fall for that.
They *are* pirates after all! - dmobley, on 10/10/2007, -3/+77this is a one-sided perspective...
Maybe they haul in that much money per year, but how much does it cost per month to actually operate the site? I know most people think that servers and bandwidth are made of magic and that no companies actually spend money to keep their operation alive, but the reality is that they may spend a few hundred thousand dollars on datacenter hosting and bandwidth. If they seriously had 300 servers taken hostage, rackspace and bandwidth for 300 servers could easily be in the hundreds of thousands of dollars per month in hosting.
And on top of that, they're going to need plenty of money for their impending legal defense when they eventually get hauled into some court somewhere or extradited to the US for execution or whatever horrible fate awaits them at some point in the near or distant future. If you're gonna help them dig their own graves, you shouldn't be too pissed about helping them out a little. - lilbitmoreslyk, on 10/10/2007, -1/+65"There are a lot of bit torrent sites. They all work the same way."
How do you think these torrent sites fork the server/bandwidth bills?
I'm not surprised at all, everyone wants to make money. - weeeezzll, on 10/10/2007, -0/+45Pirates Bay isn't in the US, so our constitution doesn't apply to them...
- st3vo, on 10/10/2007, -1/+38Not me, I use adblock.
- jakswa, on 10/10/2007, -2/+38save a drug addict. get rich through piracy instead.
- osc1882, on 10/10/2007, -14/+48"
The police will investigate how ad revenues are managed and if tax is paid. If the prosecutor can show that the site is being run commercially the suspects risk a harder punishment than if it's just a hobby project.
"
Wow, so because they make money it's illegal now? But if they didn't make money it would be ok? Copy right laws are a joke. - tobaa, on 10/10/2007, -4/+36lol, if we made millions of dollars I wouldnt work my ass off as an electrician every day. if we hired a bunch of people to sell ads we could probably make more money than we do now but please, do you think that the people who have ads on our site pay as much as the companies that have ads on like cnn and stuff? cause thats how this ***** calculates. take a look at our ads and go figure :) /toba from tpb
- carbon12, on 10/10/2007, -6/+36I say they deserve the money consider the fact that they host about half of all the public trackers and that they have to deal with the constant harassment from the Swedish police/ RIAA.
- KalleK, on 10/10/2007, -3/+32FYI this is from last year... (2006-07-08)
Follow up: http://rixstep.com/1/20060715,00.shtml - kopimi, on 10/10/2007, -2/+31It's a year old article - and the guy who claimed that ads for that amount of money was sold got fired from his position at Eastpoint.
He told the prices to the press so his customers would feel they got a REALLY GOOD DISCOUNT!
The most expensive ad on the bay (20000 EUR) was never sold to anyone. The price was set that high so that noone would even think to buy it since the bay crew never wants to put ads on the front page. - JonnyTrombone, on 10/10/2007, -3/+28I don't have a problem with filesharing, but $9 million is a little ridiculous... Maybe if they gave some money to the EFF or someone to combat the RIAA?
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+23if you cover the stereos with ads, then no.
- dcbebop, on 10/10/2007, -3/+24They're pirates. Thats what pirates do: steal.
- DigTheDoug, on 10/10/2007, -5/+26You have a problem with them making money? Don't support them or visit the site.
- areric, on 10/10/2007, -0/+20"Some tax protesters, conspiracy investigators, and others opposed to income taxes cite what they contend is evidence that the Sixteenth Amendment was never "properly ratified."..."These and similar arguments have been universally rejected by the courts.[26]"
Also isnt TPB a swedish company. Something tells me they don't fall under the U.S. tax code so debate about our constitution is moot. - rauz, on 10/10/2007, -1/+21Ditto, at least they're not making any money because of me :)
- kazamx, on 10/10/2007, -0/+18I am pretty sure that TPB does pay all Swedish taxes. Remember TPB is 100% legal in Sweden. If they didn't pay taxes then that would be against Swedish law, thats how they got Al Capone
- runningguy84, on 10/10/2007, -3/+20Only if you copy the radios, so the original owner can still enjoy theirs.
- lilbitmoreslyk, on 10/10/2007, -10/+27If you're making MONEY, an INCOME and you are NOT PAYING the income TAX associated with it, then there is justification for legal prosecution.
- Niz1, on 10/10/2007, -3/+19Strange i always assumed that most Pirates are more than the average surfer, so they would either be blocking ads or plain simply not clicking on them. The only adverts ive ever clicked on is the ones with free o2 sim cards, that's not even on pirate bay, well i don't even use pirate bay!
- civperc, on 10/10/2007, -5/+20One word guys... BANDWIDTH. Those who think the figures are all profit, are fools.
- LucasKane, on 10/10/2007, -4/+18I find this VERY hard to believe
- Error601, on 10/10/2007, -11/+24So, if I steal car stereos and sell them to people...that's cool?
- merlingen, on 10/10/2007, -8/+21SHOW ME THE LAW WHERE IT SAYS YOU NEED TO PAY INCOME TAX!1!1!!
- mahler, on 10/10/2007, -0/+13Not true... blocked adds are _not_ downloaded.
- shuffle2, on 10/10/2007, -0/+12at least someone is observant.
bury this FUD story! - sloppychris, on 10/10/2007, -1/+11Unpopular as it may sound, I would say it's the actual producers of the content who deserve to be compensated accordingly.
- VSLOATHE, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10Man there are a lot of idiots in these comments. All websites have ads, why shouldn't TPB try to offset their hosting bill?
- CAPSLOCKISCOOL, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9How did your "i" jump over 9 characters?
- x0nIMIn0x, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9I don't know, I think that the generation of profit is a pretty good delineation between piracy and fair use.
If I buy a album or a movie, and I copy it to make a backup or to shift the information to another playback device, I think that should obviously be recognized as fair use. The same goes if I use the material in some kind of collage, or parody, or for educational purposes. If I share it with another person (making a mix CD, for example) I think you could make a compelling argument about that being fair use too, particularly as the recipient of the mix is a potential new customer for the creator of the content.
If I copy something and begin selling it, or generate revenue based on the distribution of the copied material, I think that might be an unethical infringement on the rights of the creative artist (who deserves the compensation I'm generating) and outside the boundaries of fair use.
Why should someone receive financial reward for distributing material for which they have not entered into any agreement to reward the original creator? If money is going to change hands, the surely some of it should go to the party responsible for the material being exchanged. - jer2eydevil88, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9Adblock plus acts as a filter blocking your browser from loading anything from a set of urls its like a host file inside of just your browser. It removes that line of code from the html you download before it displays anything.
- kazamx, on 10/10/2007, -1/+10I bet it was for torrentspy, but they are on their way out.
Remember guys and girls, Torrentspy lost its court case and now has to store data on those who use them, PLEASE don't use them for anything that isn't free (linux public domain etc.) - Suplyndmnd, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9Silly rabbit, our US Constitution applies to everyone everywhere! Well, except where we deem it in our best interests that it doesn't.
- vawksel, on 10/10/2007, -4/+12That amendment was never properly and legally ratified, so, sorry, you lose.
- Elranzer, on 10/10/2007, -6/+14Pastey white skinny Swedish pirates who could never kick even a little girl's ass, but pirates nonetheless.
- Salgat, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9Why did they attempt to raise money ($20,000) for an island? Thats chump change to them.
- akinder, on 10/10/2007, -5/+13Nice, but now if it's an evil CEO of a corporation, or god forbid, a non-open source software company, they don't deserve the money. But these ***** make $9 million a year from offering stolen software/movies?
Now I finally know why Digg sucks. Hypocritical ***** like this.
And please, mod me down, I don't want to disturb the delicate middle school lunchroom quality of this site. - Renton, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9Maybe if you made a search engine for where you can steal car stereos easily and only sent the address, then yeah.
- Kazanoe, on 10/10/2007, -2/+9This is BRILLIANT.
Man, someone should TOTALLY make a music service where you see a couple of ads, and get to download a song for free, legally. I mean, how many ad's does it take to make $1? 30 seconds worth? Who wouldn't spend 30 seconds of their time for a free, legal song?
Pirate bay will never work like that, granted. If someone made an ad based music service like that, they'd get rich quick.
(make sure to put me in the credits for the idea D:!) - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -2/+9so? they are not above stealing money off mugs stupid enough to donate. the guys ARE criminals ffs
- fuggo, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7I'll make it easier to not believe. $25000 per day is the rate for the most expensive ads on the site. If you multiply that by 365 days a year, you get $9 million. Except they haven't sold 365 $25k ads, they've sold 4. If you read the article and do the math, it seems as though they're topping $1 million USD/year.
- mcmlxxii, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8haha but selling advertising space is actually legit no?
- raada, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7They haven't broken the law or distributed a single copyrighted file. They only point out where you can find it.
- LastDitchHero, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7Yea, I also like how they use so many shell corporations to hide profits. So your heros are pulling the same thing that you fight against, Corporations hiding profits through shell companies in different countries.....
- spyrochaete, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6The US constitution valid in Sweden now?
- TimoP, on 10/10/2007, -4/+10So those ***** make 9 million a year copyright infringing other people's stuff? that's messed up.
