- gohoos, on 12/21/2008, -2/+93Hmm, the Pirate Bay guys are pretty smart. One more step to legitimacy - create a tool everyone can use - pirate or not - and give it away for free.
- etaubeneck, on 12/21/2008, -2/+65windows only
- Danny3528, on 12/20/2008, -5/+68Finally, I can watch the porn I download from The Pirate Bay on my iPod.
- alapoet, on 12/20/2008, -1/+56Careful, you'll get your click wheel all gummed up.
- mickstephenson, on 12/21/2008, -7/+42Hypocrites! They act like they stand for a cause, flouting copyright law as they see fit on the one hand, then not releasing the code of their app (which they are legally obliged to do considering their use of GPL'd code in xvidcore) on the other.
- mrm3x1can, on 12/21/2008, -1/+34What were you doing with your iPod before?
- holyskeleton, on 12/21/2008, -0/+32I nominate this as 2008 makes-most-sense thread
before whoever comes next ***** it up. - mickstephenson, on 12/21/2008, -4/+25Are you some kind of moron? do you even know what the GPL is?
Have you been on the digg before?
There is a major idealogical and legal difference between FOSS and freeware, and you cannot take an open source library licensed under the GPL and make a closed application, its illegal and immoral, even if you release it for free.
GPL violations are something alot of diggers take very seriously. - jannefoo, on 12/21/2008, -2/+22Meh, it's just rebranded ffmpeg+x264 wrapped into some .exe: http://lists.mplayerhq.hu/pipermail/ffmpeg-devel/2 ...
- camintmier, on 12/21/2008, -11/+31The only thing bad about it is that, during installation, it asks to install a "Vio Toolbar". You can tell it not to install the toolbar, so that makes it okay I guess.
- HyperJack, on 12/21/2008, -1/+20@macbookhair
WOOOOOOOSHH!. . . . . - benburned, on 12/21/2008, -0/+15vlc can play anything.
- Raingwc, on 12/21/2008, -0/+14Awesome tool, missing only One thing. A queue. I want to be able to select multiple files to be converted in a queue and it'll be done automaticly. With VIO you have to do them one by one. Still, it converts by far alot quicker then videoras ipod converters.
- mickstephenson, on 12/21/2008, -0/+13As if they even included an EULA, why on Earth haven't the just released a source tarball on their website and licensed it GPL? What do they have to gain from doing this?
Very uncool indeed. - Steeple, on 12/21/2008, -0/+13handbreak is now a universal converter, not just dvds, it's pretty great
windows and mac full versions available free - Cerberus047, on 12/21/2008, -4/+16No zune love? :(
- McMaster88, on 12/21/2008, -2/+14nothing, I use it as an external HDD, but now I have a reason to use it again.
- cros, on 12/21/2008, -0/+11And, if true, that is actually quite lame of them to modify ffmpeg like that and not attribute the original authors.
- DaffyDuck, on 12/21/2008, -1/+12You named your son billions?
- TomKarpik, on 12/21/2008, -3/+13I'm sure you have no problems with violating licenses when you yourself pirate hundreds of gigabytes of audio, video, and software, but you bitch and whine when someone (maybe) violates the GPL?
Who's the hypocrite here? - AlanFang, on 12/21/2008, -0/+10L2R, optional toolbar.
- caller9, on 12/21/2008, -0/+9Hell, they could at least release linux binaries if they're going to crap on the GPL like that. Not like I would run a binary released by admitted pirates. In the long list of people that would know how to put a rootkit on your machine, software pirates has to be in the top 10 or you are an idiot.
- betheturtle, on 12/21/2008, -0/+9That's a special kind of stupid.
- mcphattySS, on 12/21/2008, -0/+9just tried to install it via wine on ubuntu linux. no luck :(
- pantalanaga11, on 12/21/2008, -2/+10of course they are. You have rediculously expensive software like final cut to do this.
- PhantomJM, on 12/21/2008, -3/+11Pretty fast converter but needs support for other popular devices like the PSP and Zune.
- cubicle, on 12/21/2008, -0/+8and Media Coder?
http://mediacoder.sourceforge.net/ - burrier, on 12/21/2008, -1/+9http://vio.thepiratebay.org
- inactive, on 12/21/2008, -1/+9Do you know how to uncheck a box *****?
- mickstephenson, on 12/21/2008, -0/+7The project they use is called vobsub
http://sourceforge.net/forum/forum.php?forum_id=46 ...
here is the dev from vobsub getting pissy about previous gpl violations on his project. - Typhoon2009, on 12/21/2008, -0/+7MPAA in this case.
- mickstephenson, on 12/21/2008, -0/+7"Anyways woot go TPB oneday tpb might have killed the software industry by helping opensource take off."
Riiight, and they are going to do this by releasing closed source applications? - franklymister, on 12/21/2008, -1/+8It's not open source.
- djrbx, on 12/21/2008, -3/+10Find a way to get visualhub. Best mac video converter out.
- computershack, on 12/21/2008, -1/+8How the ***** else do you think the transcoding is being done? Don't tell me you believe those two stupid ***** have the intelligence to code their own?
- doctordbx, on 12/21/2008, -1/+8I wonder if the guys at TPB can sleep at night.
Not with anything to do with moral conscience or that malarky... more so that someone might come crashing through the window at any minute to execute a hit on them. - spyderveloce, on 12/21/2008, -0/+7Can it play Crysis?
- konataXchan, on 12/21/2008, -1/+7The software compliments the movie and TV selection on the pirate bay completely.
- Mujokan, on 12/21/2008, -0/+6Looking at your comment history, what's up with Reverend Wright? Just out of very idle curiosity.
- breadfred, on 12/21/2008, -0/+5I am a Dutch bloke. I am on Digg to digg stories and comment on them. I keep my businesss out of this, and would recommend you do the same.
- lcmatt, on 12/21/2008, -0/+5No source then? Thats the spirit TPB take GPL'd work and not release the code.
- sexybobo, on 12/21/2008, -0/+5Shame visualhub is no longer being developed.
- BlueStarr, on 12/21/2008, -1/+6Mac users can use ffmpegX app. Does a hell of alot more than what PB app can do. Although it does ask you to register everytime you open the app you can simply click on the 'try it free' and use all the features of this app.
http://osx.iusethis.com/search?q=+ffmpegX - caller9, on 12/21/2008, -1/+6Actually the 48% or 50% consistent usage of your processor means you have a dual core system and it is using 100% of one of them. That just makes it a single-threaded converter. If the process has a priority of "lower" than normal, that is where it stops being a CPU hog. It is likely still a hog, it just doesn't know how to hog both cores simultaneously.
Sorry, I'm a nerd. - SchizoDuckie, on 12/21/2008, -1/+5I'm testing it out rght now. It's converting a dvdrip to PSP dimensions (480*272, too bad it's not an included format)
The interface is awesomely simple:
* select file
* select your phone / player
* press convert
There's an advanced button for who wants to tweak the dimensions themselves, which is layed out graphically. Then you press the convert button and it says it wil take 25 minutes on my 3ghz pc. Nice One TPB!
Oh yeah! it's not a cpu hog either. The process doesn't come over 48% cpu-usage here so you can do something else while transcoding! - franklymister, on 12/21/2008, -0/+4That sounds like either the most stereotypical Mac hater ever, or someone parodying one...
- peters1023, on 12/21/2008, -0/+4The point is that ANYTHING associated with TPB is obviously much cooler.
- SarahC, on 12/21/2008, -0/+4Hypocrites!
Anyone getting pissy about the (possible) infringement of the GPL license by TPB - what are you doing on TPB?
Double standards much? - inactive, on 12/21/2008, -8/+12The only thing bad about this comment is that it's dumb. I can ignore it, so that makes it okay I guess.
- franklymister, on 12/21/2008, -2/+6None of which are free without being overrun by spyware and adware, or which work across a variety of mobile devices in one package.
Any converter that works worth a damn (Xilisoft, iSquint, for example) is either one-device-only, expensive, or both. -
