- koregaonpark, on 10/12/2007, -0/+48Here's a direct link to the (lengthy) Vanity Fair article. It's 6 pages long, so don't say I didn't warn you!
http://www.vanityfair.com/ontheweb/features/2007/03/piratebay200703 - shiftt, on 10/12/2007, -5/+42Pirating is going to be ubiquitous within 10 years time.
a) It's gaining more publicity every year, because more TV programs and writers are talking about it.
b) It's becoming easier (better software, faster connections)
Not to mention that not everyone falls for the "pirating == stealing" message that RIAA and MPAA are trying to push.
a) That message is *****, because nothing is being stolen (copying bytes of data != stealing from a bank)
b) Reports from all around the world are showing that pirating is not causing any slowdown in sales. - bioskope, on 10/12/2007, -1/+36wonder if the torrent is available for the scanned pdf of that issue on TPB
- joach, on 10/12/2007, -0/+24Gottfrid Svartholm -can a name become more Swedish?! These guys are not Pirates, they are Vikings!
- Supernova36, on 10/12/2007, -0/+24Anyone else barely ever use Pirate Bay? I just think there are better alternatives, albeit without the cool-as-ice attitude..
- Attrition, on 10/12/2007, -1/+21It was very well written.
- mikepictor, on 10/12/2007, -2/+22@shiftt
To be clear, yeah I use torrents, I download copyrighted material, shame on me.
You are right, it's not stealing, however it *is* copyright infringement and a betrayal of intellectual property. Let's not make up words or names to try and justify it to ourselves. If you're going to do it, fine. I do it, I can't really criticize you for it. However I at least can call it what it is. If it becomes as ubiquitous as it is, it will definitely affect sales. It does already affect sales. I know if I download a movie, I didn't rent it or buy it, that affected sales in a small way.
Go ahead and get your content, but don't be so blind as to believe that it has no commercial impact. Call a spade a spade, and if you want to use that spade when you're done calling it, that's fine. - WiZZLa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+19Printable version, so everything is on one "page" : http://www.vanityfair.com/ontheweb/features/2007/03/piratebay200703?printable=true¤tPage=all
- OutcastJiob, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15Huh. And here I thought they were just featured in Vanity Fair. Oh well, you must be right.
- evilTak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15That's a myth. Check your facts.
- burke, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13They have their place. Most of these 'better alternatives' are either indexing sites (ie. torrentspy) that include TPB's torrents, or private trackers (therefore better seeded. As far as public trackers go, I think they're near the top of their game.
- Nekko17, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Not enough pictures for you?
I shouldn't be talking. I didn't even read it, and I only looked at the picture(s). Hah. - Elektriq, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9That guy really looks like a pirate.
- ahhell, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Sounds like LMControl needs a hug.
- catalysis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7TPB is for torrent noobs. An easily identifiable brand for the masses and pretty far removed from the real scene.
- teknobryan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6"self aggrandizement" lol
- euphemizeme, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7rofl... impish... what an incompetent writer. he obviously looks more like a subterranean drow
- davidsmero, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Or a level 57 dragon slayer with cosmic healing abilities.
- onionizer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I thought Vanity Fair was a fashion magazine for a female target. I should start buying it more often.
- bobcrotch, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Demonoid owns TPB for content, to bad their web server sucks.
- sachmul, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5"You must have read our article in Vogue...the Broodwich issue...our PR department is awesome"
- Nougat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3The Slashdot article, featured on Digg.
- darkamster07, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3He looks like he belongs in a Swedish death metal band.
- shortkud, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3That was a very good article.
- chess007, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I worry for Neij & Gottfrid. They are going against the RIAA and MPAA. They've told of people following them before and such. If one of them "mysteriously disappears" has a heart attack, or dies of a drug overdose (the last 2 are easy to fake) everyone here will know what really happened. :(
There's so much $ in that industry and money makes things happen. I would not put it past the RIAA or MPAA to have someone taken out. - G0DsB0NG, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I love how The Pirate Bay is getting attention. Its good that fellow pirate's are getting their voice heard. No way though is this the best torrent site. I have one word for everyone on the "pirate ship." FILELIST, by far the best torrent site ever designed. All i hear is how Pirate Bay is the "*****." They have barely scratched the surface, not to mention their having ISP issues, government problems. Which is the only reason their in the news to begin with.
- GorillaCowboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I found the article extremely informative and a great read. Not your typical analytical view from the outside as the author dugg into his past and admitted that he was turned on and obsessed with the bittorrent revolution for quite some time before writing the article.
Incredible how young Svartholm and Neij are and they are that adept at computers and running their own ISP business. - FunkyWitDaSysTm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2bittorrent is free, usenet services are not. unless they are, in which case list some, but i haven't found any that are free.
- thunderer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2First Rolling Stone, now Vanity Fair?
Has piracy finally become cooler than gossip? - bioskope, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i agree content wise demonoid has been owning TPB for a while. But in terms of mainstream impact nothing even comes close to it
Suprnova anyone? - NerdyNinja, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Well, assuming the article is accurate at all in some of its statistics, apparently iTunes only accounts for 2.5% of music purchases. I like the iTunes Music Store, and I feel like it's a strong addition to legal alternatives, but apparently it isn't enough. Otherwise, solid argument.
- nandabanaotakun, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Because they are frustrated that there isn't anyone else to sue with a p2p service (or more accurately, way too many people).
- protogenxl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I guess The Broodwich isn't the only one with an awesome PR department
- offspring06, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Why are the RIAA and MPAA going after the Pirate Bay. They are just one of many sites that host torrent files and don't actually host the copyrighted material.
- m3rkvry, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Jerigo: I understand your assessment, but I think it's a bit too simplistic. Is it stealing? Assuming the owner hasn't relinquished their copyright for this purpose (and many have) then yes, definitely. Is it draining sales? I could argue this point. First, many people have discovered new bands and televisions shows and software through peer-to-peer networks, and have gone on to purchase merchandise from them subsequently. Additionally, most peer-to-peer users would be happy to pay a reasonable fee for a convenient and legal method of downloading media - iTunes' wild success is evidence of this - and those that don't frequently can't afford what they're downloading, and so would not have made their equivalent purchase in the store - meaning no sales were lost as a result. Finally, most end-user media are not a primary source of income for copyright holders - rather, their money comes from commercial use (background in commercials, appearances on television and in movies) or merchandising ($39 for a t-shirt at a Madonna concert).
Publishers are certainly beholden to ensure that their copyrighted works don't become public domain just because they did NOTHING . . . but ultimately, I suspect they will have made more money in the long run. And if you don't believe me, ask any 80s or 90s band whose success was predicated on their fans trading bootleg tapes. - talkart, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I thought i knew the guy from somewhere.

Ever heard of 'biggulp'? Dude, http://*****.com/ ffs! Try "free NNTP servers" as your search term. Even better, google for 'Newsparrot'. Also, if you _can_ access a newsfeed, try news:alt.free.newsservers for further discussion on the subject.
Now if that's not the best information you'll ever get on free newsfeeds, be sure to dig me down - otherwise... - LethargicClam, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Interesting article, thanks.
I think it's time bloated Hollywood was downsized anyway. - Sneakydave, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Jerigo's got a fair point, it is stealing and is draining sales. Sure ive bought 3 albums which id previously downloaded since i was so impressed with them but thats from 4 yrs of downloading music, doubtless ive drained sales somewhat. I wouldnt be happy to pay for my downloads regardless of cost when i can go elsewhere and get them for free and im sure theres many like me.
@ the newsgroup guys: Dont get too happy up there on your high horse, better sources than newsgroups exist which don't cost £15 a month even if you cant find them yourselves. - xsecretfiles, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I dont know about you guys, but this caught my eye
http://www.vanityfair.com/magazine/toc/2006/toc200612 - iocc, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Yes, very interesting article. Vanity Fair knows how to write good articles.
- snotrokit, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Oh no! the secret is out about piratebay. Now everyone that reads Vanity Fair will go check it out and think that all of the pirates are perverts when the see all of the porn up there.
let the legislation fly when the boys in DC hear about this. They surely draft some new sweeping law banning the use of this so that we may better protect ourselves from ourselves. - meshman, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2I hear ya. It boggles the mind. Should I wait 1-3 days to get that DVD or should I spew it off Usenet in less than 2 hours? Since your comment is getting dug down, I assume the former for some reason. Whatever folks, suffer away. Saturate your uplink bandwidth. Yours, not mine.
- ANEPPT, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Arrr, matey!
- operand, on 10/12/2007, -5/+3You can have your Bit Torrents - I will stick with Usenet services such as Easynews.
- connor42, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Is it just me or is "The Pirate Bay" down because I can't get onto the site
- objc, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2"Sounds like LMControl needs a hug."
Nah, just bury him. :-) - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0i use both - no need to disparge BiTorrnet fans
- ifonly, on 10/12/2007, -12/+9http://oscartorrents.com
- LMControl, on 10/12/2007, -12/+8"They're no longer just Internet personalities, they're now mainstream celebrities. "
No..... no they're not. 99% of the world's population has no idea what the Pirate Bay is/was and a very similar percentage, if not more, could care even less than they already don't. Digg me down if you want, but this self aggrandizement of geek culture is becoming disturbingly pervasive here. -
