- bcochran, on 10/12/2007, -2/+22Simply amazing. And I really like that they're releasing HD versions and everything. Way to go on this one Sony.
- dclowd9901, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I remember seeing the creation of this ad on youtube a while back. Anybody got a link to that?
- mhockey14221, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2Divert some of that money from making this commercial into the "Get me a PS3" Department
- Shorties, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6Yeah its sad that Sony's marketing department sucks so bad at everything except for the Bravia division. (White vs Black PSP's Anyone?, or how about some cheese that you can play with outside...)
BTW dclowd9901: Do you mean this one? http://www.bravia-advert.com/paint/behindthescenes/high/ - Ireland, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5Arrgh!! The bloody screen saver is not a Universal Binary!!! I wouldn't mind but the ad itself was made on Mac's, just not intel ones, go figure :(
- joeydoo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"Yeah its sad that Sony's marketing department sucks so bad at everything except for the Bravia division. (White vs Black PSP's Anyone?, or how about some cheese that you can play with outside...)"
That's because this is through Sony UK.
If us Brits can do anything right, it's entertaining adverts and marketing which isn't (mostly) evil.
It's mainly because we are so dam untrusting and cynical. That means marketing departments have to work REALLY hard to actually get anywhere. - craftyshrew, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I don't find this one as interesting as the bouncy ball ad. I watched "the making of" a while ago and was pretty pumped to see the finished product. I don't know what it is...the editing, the song choice, the clown...
I feel emotionally attached to the bouncy ball ad for some reason, and not with this one.

i posted these links because the site isn't firefox friendly and i had to look at the html to find some of them - dognose, on 10/12/2007, -9/+1Anyone got a youtube or google video link? Why haven't other folks learned to put stuff online in flash?
- tpaine, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5@dognose .. because the flash movies are fine for videos where quality is a non-issue (ala: jon stewart) but for something where it's all about quality they absolutely suck! IMO quicktime are the best when it comes to these sorts of things.

- felchdonkey, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8He's just there to creep you out.
Very appropriate, as I couldn't stop thinking of Malcolm McDowell in A Clockwork Orange beating people up all through that song. - felchdonkey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1My bad. From the 'making of' mini-docu that accompanies:
"The clown, I guess, is the other interesting element to this. Because it's not paint blowing up, it's - it's sort of a human moment. The feeling at the end of the day was that if he could set up the big moment when the reverse demolition occurs, it would be quite powerful."
- felchdonkey, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8He's just there to creep you out.
- jackmeoffer, on 10/12/2007, -19/+3looks fake. but it isnt.... or is it.....
- stisaac, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10No, its not fake. Here's a homemade video of the building being color bombed - it was digg a while ago: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-5140747333056342775

You lose sir, good day. - Blobster2005, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Possibly going on about the original video footage of colour bombed tower block before it was turned in to this awesome advert.

edit: Blobster2005 beat me to it =) - JackHallows, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1Yes thank you blobster and dizzy, that's what I was referring to. I was unaware that it wasn't a Bravia advert at one time...
- spudnic, on 10/12/2007, -3/+32No. It's just been released
- ij00mini, on 10/12/2007, -17/+1As awesome as that was, were the caps necessary?
Still, though, thanks for that. It was quite cool, and I also watched the balls one.
(it took me a while to realize that many of the balls were not real)- Carteludo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5The bouncy ball one is all real. There was a "making of" video online with it originally.
- samster, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I think you will find that infact all of the 'superballs' were real. Read:
"250,000 'superballs' come flying, in slow motion, over the brow of a typical street in San Francisco, raining down on anything that gets in their way. And it was done without computer graphics."
The new Paint ad was just as good, nice work Sony! - t1t0, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Edit : OK got beaten to the punch... twice. Too many people reading digg! ;)
- MrBabyMan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@ ij00mini
Yeah, sorry 'bout that. Only the NEW is in caps for emphasis. The BRAVIA is in caps, 'cause like Sony's SIXAXIS, that's the official spelling...all caps.
- fugazi, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8I like the bouncy ball one much better.
- evilTak, on 10/12/2007, -10/+7Does it come with a rootkit?
- Stryke, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3I hope they cleaned that mess! ;)
- Zjm7891, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2FTA: it took them 5 days but they did!
- Azimuth1, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6I downloaded the HD version and watched it on my 32" Bravia.
Very nice. :D - drload, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1amazing! simple idea. great realization.
- jguy584, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I wish I was there when they were filming it
- glasgowm, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I was :D
- chickenut, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0wow. that's all i have to say.
- pr0cty, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Taste the rainbow
- Malicious, on 10/12/2007, -8/+1I don't know why they felt compelled to edit out the Barrels. Suddenly the pait is coming from no-where, when in the 'making of' video's, you can clearly see the barrels of paint.
It feels cheapened, because now it is fake. - felchdonkey, on 10/12/2007, -5/+3Beautiful ad, but I doubt it's enough to save Sony from their rootkits, exploding batteries, overpriced PS3 and Blu-Ray debacles.
Loved the ad, though.- theone3, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Hey, it's a big company, and their Bravia TVs are fantastic. Good work is good work, the brand is secondary. This is the home entertainment electronics department, not the media department or the gaming department.
- spudnic, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Most people don't even know what a rootkit is...
The vast majority of people don't follow tech news at all, Sony will carry on strong
Not saying I think they should, or defending them, but you have to realise your average digg-user-type-person is in a relatively tiny minority - joeydoo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Their phones are pretty good too. Had a few of them and never had a problem. They have good UI's as well.
- redrighthand, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2damn cool I like it even better than the balls commercial-
- cpbrown, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5its not quite as good / classic as the first. I think at points even if it is real, it just looked a little bit OTT to be classy.
and the clown? wtf. - glasgowm, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13I can see these buildings from my window! this was filmed about 2mos. ago and the paint is still there.
Btw, it's in Glasgow, Scotland for anyone interested - vagarach, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2That was so nice! It made me smile. Brilliant.
- DigitalDud, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1So this is why Bravias cost so much?
- distrbnce, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Bravias aren't very expensive for all the features they have.
- spudnic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2That's true, they're actually expensive because distrbnce gets $1 for every positive thing he says about them ;)
- allyourbase, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1I don't like it. The first one was great, though, as was the machinima version and the spoof by Tango: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CjHzS_twDVY.
@MrBabyMan: why the two exclamation marks? It bothers me when people use all caps and/or exclamation marks just because they think this is great news.- antdude, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1"The url contained a malformed video id."
- cpbrown, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-qRvXh_0HbU
- fjvwing, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Are the TV's any good?
- kagayaki1, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Put me down for liking the first one too - this one was cool, but the bouncy ball one was magical.
- antdude, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Agreed. Balls was cooler, but this one was good too.
- antdude, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1It reminded me of Blue Man Group for some reason. :)
- Cleanlyness, on 10/12/2007, -8/+1
- zaph47, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1This one's better:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a11wbSuEhqQ - kirashira, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2If i saw that on TV for the first time i'd think it was a paint commericial...
- andreascliment, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I was expecting something better. While it's a really cool concept, the editing and the music doesn't flow as well as the previous Bravia ad did.
- antdude, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Don't forget to check out the behind the scene on how this was done.
- doubleyoube, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1some of those explosions do look a bit iffy (edited/superimposed) and i thought they were meant to be real... but overall that was stunning.
- acurism, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Damn, I their Bravia line is nice!
- canyadiggit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Just dub Jose Gonzales music over this video, replace the clown with a pretty girl, and it's a keeper.
- theone3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Or a frog.
- m0ke, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2That's genius marketing, I can't imagine the kind of people they'd have to hire to get a campaign like that going.
- dragazis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Really cool video not only for the idea and video, but because it has Jonathan Glazer as the director, which is really badass.
- mediaphile, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4The guy that was director of photography on the super balls Bravia commercial is a teacher at my film school, and he came and substituted for my Cinematography class for a couple weeks. He got onto the subject of slow-motion photography, and casually mentioned the Sony commercial he had recently shot. Having seen the ad on the internet, I stopped him in mid-sentence and asked if that was the one. He confirmed that it was, then let us in on some of the inside info.
Typical slow-motion film is shot between 36-72 frames per second, but the camera they shot the commercial on was like 700 frames per second or something. The motor to power the camera took three people just to lift and mount on the camera. They used big dumpsters to hold thousands of those super balls, and they would just tip them over, gather all the balls up, and do it over, again and again.
The ad was for Sony UK, so when concerns were raised about damaging the local San Francisco property, the sentiment was basically "Meh, who cares, we'll be on a plane out of here tomorrow night." On the day of the shoot, they tried to let as many of the people know as possible, but obviously not everyone was home. The balls busted windows in cars and apartments, and other various things. When the residents came out irate and yelling at my teacher, he simply told them he was just the photographer, and directed them towards the producers of the ad, who would make deals to just give the people a couple hundred bucks in cash. Total marketing assholes.
All that makes me wonder how much damage they caused for their new ad.- joeydoo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Damage...On a Scottish housing estate?
They probably made less than none, or they would have gotten their legs broken..... That could equally be.. "as much as they like" because no one would have noticed. It was a game of risk.
Thanks for the info though. Most interesting.
- joeydoo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Damage...On a Scottish housing estate?
- edzieba, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Q: Where's the HD version? You'd think that with an ad for HDTVs, they'd release a HD version. The 'high' version on the site is 700x 394, which is LESS THAN A DVD (720x480)!
- mediaphile, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Um, the HD version is downloadable along with the rest, with a resolution of 1280x720.
- jmanlasman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'd hate to be the janitor in that complex.
