- jonathanbull, on 10/12/2007, -1/+82And there was me thinking he'd bought one of Leonardo Da Vinci's laptops...
- benijuana, on 10/12/2007, -1/+54i actually would have guessed it to be more expensive, not that 30.8 is cheap, but still
- arestme, on 10/12/2007, -6/+5230.8 million and i just looked at it for free.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+43"That little notebook will surely be inflating at an amazing rate over that purchase price."
Which is NOT why he bought it!!
Why can some people not get past the idea that everything one does is about money!! - spinchange, on 10/12/2007, -2/+31Yeah, He's owned it since 1995. Remeber the "Da Vinci" Desktop Theme in Windows '98?
If you're interested in the Da Vinci Manuscripts, Check out the following:

- allthewhile, on 10/12/2007, -6/+32I'm going to kill the diggmirror spam guy. Can we have him banned already? Please!
- 4NDr01D, on 10/12/2007, -1/+23yes, but Steve Jobs has hired Tom Hanks to steal it back!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+20Are you saying Bill isn't doing enough to help the planet already? There are many other billionaires keeping all the money for themselves.
- aaronm67, on 10/12/2007, -3/+19More then likely, it's about 500 years old and it's paper. It must be a pretty ***** blender that can't blend that.
- KSUdesigner, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12"the first bible ever made using a printing press"
Not just the first bible, it's the first book ever printed on a press. - TheXeno, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11If I were the richest man in the world, this is the kinda stuff I'd be buying as well. Next up, Benjamin Franklin's kite!
- music13, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9taken from http://www.rotten.com/library/bio/artists/leonardo-da-vinci/
"Leonardo collected his technological innovations in notebooks called codeci. One of the best preserved is the Codex Leicester, deals with everything from fossils to astronomy, included sketches of the how the moon's light is seen from earth, and the properties of water and rocks. For many years, the Codex Leicester was owned by Armand Hammer who called it the Codex Hammer from 1980 until his death; in 1994, it was bought by Bill Gates, who returned its original name." - scabbers, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Stuff like that is a very good investment... as well as being pretty cool to own!
- RomeyRome, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9@OMGWTFROFLMAO
Nuns do. You'll be the first to hit it. - jamend, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11Silly, haven't you watched Alias? There are tons of secret codes in there that can't be scanned or duplicated.
- electronaught, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6at monolith: it's not a news article, it's a whole interactive thing of the actual notebook with a guy who nararrates each page and you can zoom in to take a closer look. Still pretty cool and at any rate, it was news to me.

it says he bought the Gutenberg Bible for $30.8 million too. - darkyoshi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7*tappitytappitytappity*

you might want to check out http://www.gatesfoundation.org/default.htm He does donate a tremenous amount to "third world countries" - idean360, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7You really shouldnt be able to buy stuff like that, it should be in DaVinci's homeland museum
- music13, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I wonder how much he paid for that one. If da Vinci went for 30.8 I would think that the Gutenberg Bible would go for much more. Hmm, anyone know of the number?
- potterboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5This was mentioned in the DaVinci Code. It is written backwards and requires a mirror to read.
- Viremia, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5WOW @ thatlifestyle!!
Under what rock have you been living for the past decade? The Gates Foundation is on of the worlds largest charities and Bill is one of the most generous philanthropists in history.
Hate his company, but he's putting his money to more good than I'm sure 90% of the people here can say. - cielo23, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Maybe he'll design an ornithopter that'll crash every 5 minutes......or he'll implement DaVinci code++ into Visual Studio.......
- Veign, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9I would have sold him my notebook for only a million. He got ripped off.
- Ennoch, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Story in a nutshell: "Rich man owns thing! Thing very expensive, and rare!"
- zonk3r, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7Pretty expensive for a notebook that can't even run Windows 3.1... sheesh. ;p
- Dakusan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Thanks for the year :) saved me the trouble of going and finding out... I knew it was at least 10 years ago.
- jer2eydevil88, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I am to, he does have a passion for fast cars. Although his wife is rumored to hate his passion so that probably means he only owns a handful instead of what he can afford to own, which is probably one from every design ever built...
- Shivetya, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3at least he buys stuff that has value to others even after his passing...
- RyanChappell, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Money will only help a starving person in the present. What will help that person tomorrow? Economic progress of their country, over throwing the tyrant running their country, teaching them a trade these things are more important than money. Also, their are millions who choose to be bottom class by their decisions.
- n0xz, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Whatever amount of money he paid for it, the codex is considered priceless. There is no value attached to such work by the greatest artist/scientist ever. He was lucky to own it, since works by Vinci does not appear on the market any longer, even you have all the money to buy it.
On a lesser note, I hope Bill Gates will donate it to an American museum, so more people can come and see one of the very few works available to see by the greatest artist of all time in North American. I hope in time, he'll collect more and open a museum for all to see.
Like most of you, I duly hate Microsoft the company, but I do not hate the man himself. He has done more to the advancement of technology than anyone else at present time and now with his charity + the money from Warren Buffet, he can do more than anyone could ever do to help the unfortunate out there. - Toast1185, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4The only difference here is that the guy whose work it originally was had enough vision, at the time, to make the notebook useful.
- jake13jake, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2He's trying. Someone should release a shockwave for linux?
- jeffness, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Found an interesting article as a follow up:
http://www.businessweek.com/bwdaily/dnflash/aug2001/nf20010814_884.htm - GodHatesRap, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Does anyone know who had the notebook before Gates did? A museum or a private owner?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Difficult to take a bible out for a spin, especially one that would cost so much to repair after a crash.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -9/+10chicks dig gutenburg-ian bibles?
- Er0z, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Last I heard hasn't he donated as much money as his net worth right now?
- marinist, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If the story links to the notebook Gates owns, that's hardly the most significant DaVinci notebook, despite the $30.8M price.
Perhaps it's good from a historical/theoretical standpoint, but I see no significant drawings there.
Then again, Gates must still like it for the price. - sshack, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2He can buy all the creative artifacts he wants. It still won't rub off on him.
- jagtar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i wonder how much he's gonna make outa vista??
- andywirtanen, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4"Leonardo's Laptop" is actually a pretty good book by Ben Shneiderman...
http://mitpress.mit.edu/main/feature/leonardoslaptop/ - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I was reading about the Gutenberk bible in wikipedia. At the end theres a list of all current locations of the bible and it says "Bill Gates (Microsoft co-founder) owns a copy purchased from auction in 1994 at a cost of $30.8 million (USD)."
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gutenberg_Bible - zombieball, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If I remember correctly I thought I once heard something mentioned about Gates purchasing a very old carved stone tablet with what was thought to be one of the very first evidences of a binary like system, or something along those lines. The idea was that Gates would be able to argue that he owns the rights to the binary system if need be.
Who knows what Gates has planned for this though... - myFriendDerrik, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1ZOMG! TORRENT PLZ!
- wisie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+130M is church change for bill hey
