Q: How loud is the vacuum elevator ?
A:The vacuum elevator is 87 decibels
Pretty loud. - drewthaler, on 10/12/2007, -1/+24Seriously loud. 87 decibels is roughly the equivalent of a handsaw according to the chart. Now you know why the movies have music dubbed over the sound.
"Hmm, maybe I'll just pop upstairs to check on the baby. Let's take that new elevator."
RRRRRWWWEEEEEEEEOOOOOORRRRRRRRRRRWWWWWWEEEEEEEEEEEEEE.
"Oh no, he's crying again! Funny, I could've sworn he wasn't doing that just a minute ago." - mordain, on 10/12/2007, -0/+22I don't like the "virtually" part...
- handsomecrown, on 10/12/2007, -0/+20Haha... I like how the answer about the decibels is in smaller font than the rest of the answers.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14You know someone who has one, and you haven't been around to check it out for yourself?
- dclowd9901, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14Oh yeah, REAL neat. That's EXACTLY like the Jetson's elevator.
Talk about a hyperbolic headline. - nightmar3, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13i know somebody who owns one and they said it is pretty noisy. Maybe that explains why they put classical music for every video on the bottom
- fordistumley, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7"...it is virtually impossible to get stuck between floors, or freefall."
- boredzo, on 10/12/2007, -8/+14No digg for using MS Comic Sans.
- Satertek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5They've had that thing at my bank for a long time except it was smaller and I put checks instead of people into it.
- ZenMasterJG, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Nifty, but definitely not new tech.
The first subway in the US, in New York, worked on the same principle. This was circa 1870. - maiku00, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5It would be pretty fun to get stuck in one of those things.
- elShaggy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4The futurama vaccuum elevators are faster and dont have a place to stand on.
- konspence, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4After seeing the video, this looks more of a safety hazard than a regular elevator. What if someone say, shot a hole in the elevator, when it was up on a high floor. It would stop the vacuum, probably causing the elevator to drop at a rapid speed. Correct?
- cambrown99, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Okay, we've got the robot maids (roomba) and tube elevators, now get working on those flying cars, shrink rays, and apartments that can rise above the rain
- mikecx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Wrong. The site itself says if the pressure changes the electronic brakes fire within 2 seconds. Now, what if there isn't power... covered. The brake is "held open" by the power and closes if it loses power. Seems pretty safe to me but nothing is fool proof.
- mlerner, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I get "Service Unavailable" clicking the link, which will probably be the message I get when I try this vacuum elevator.
- dustko, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3That thing is 87 decibles, which, according to this chart http://www.lhh.org/noise/decibel.htm is somewhere in the vacinity of a lawn mower. A google search for 87 decibles brings up "If, in any particular area, noise exposure is likely to exceed 87 decibels, the employer must implement a 'hearing protection zone'."
And after all that, 87 decibels is most likely a conservative estimate (they're trying to sell the thing, after all) - EricJD, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Cool. I wondered if something like this was feasible.
- MattLat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3... like a bank?
- awoeonip, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5http://www.daytonaelevator.com.nyud.net:8080/Pneumatic%20Vacuum%20Elevator%20Main%20Page.htm
- thatcoolrushguy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4"Also, during a power outage, the vacuum elevator will automatically return to the bottom floor."
I'd imagine it would be heading towards the bottom floor at about 100 MPH. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3that would be equivalent to saying that what if somebody cut the cable in a normal elevator :p
- GuyHitByTruck, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Think of how noisy (not loud, but noise none the less) those tubes at the bank are! Can you imagine those tubes on this scale? It's a nice concept but the implimentation, at least for now, is just too impractical.
- micro506, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Yeah, I would be seriously freaking out on one of these. The fear of it just shutting down, even if unjustified, might be too much for me.
- Computer_Kid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I want one, time to get a house with two floors! :-)
- msbeckman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3http://fhnfilms.com/vacum.html
I tryed to make another mirror before this one shuts down again. Give me a few minutes to put all the files on. - nofxjunkee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Either way, I think I'd rather fall than be stuck inside that thing. At least then you'd have a chance of it breaking and IF you didn't break your legs, you might get out.
- Puttockc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Its the healthy option
thats always the better one - MrSidnet, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2holy hanna, I read this like...4 years ago. It was cool then, and its cool now.
Thanks for the digg - lovelei, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2LOL all the links are dead.
Digg effect > all - ghostaliaz, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Check out the little video's of the vaxuum elevator on the page by clicking on the picture on the page, I think near the bottom & then the video will give you an idea on how it works.
- JeffBoyaredi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Lisa: Where does that go?
Homer: Don't worry - the tube knows what to do with it - nofxjunkee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The first sentence: "Experts agree that continued exposure to noise above 85 dBA over time, will cause hearing loss."
Now granted this thing won't be running all the time, but that's still really loud. And what if you have kids? I can see them playing on that thing for weeks when it's new, and after that they'll still always want to show their friends. Then they get older, and come home late, drunk, and lazy and take the elevator, and wake everyone up. Really they should target this at older people, not people who want to be cool or stylish. - colincsl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2flying cars are already on their way
http://www.moller.com/skycar/ - streetblader, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2hmmm.. cool, still quite simple.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3The apple store uses a hydraulic elevator, hence no cables.
- penneyisok, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4http://duggmirror.com/technology/The_Jetsons_VACUUM_ELEVATOR_Is_Here.
- jkastan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3the apple store on 5th ave in nyc has a regular elevator that has a glass/plastic outer casing. if you look underneath it, you can see the shaft that extends a good floor below the actual store level.
http://www.appleinsider.com/article.php?id=1776 - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4So if the power does go out and you are halfway up, are you trapped, and do you suffocate?
- rayblasdel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2... a nice concept, but I does read like it would be quite a sound maker. I would rather just take the stairs. Or is that just too low tech of an option for some people.
- Osjpr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Easy! Keep a battery powered hand drill inside, a thin hacksaw blade and 3 bottles of water.
- goofy_goober, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Build one that works without the cab, then I'll be interested.
- Negyxo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+175 - 85 decibels = toilet flush
Guys, it's not THAT loud. It's a freaking vacuum elevator, what do you expect? I'm for the vaccum eleveator. - boredzo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Having it installed means I get to notice when a site uses MS Comic Sans.
I did think of one alternative: a font, set to the same family name as MS Comic Sans (so that it matches when the browser looks it up), that replaces every character with "THIS WEBSITE IS BROKEN". That'd be a fun screenshot to send to the webmaster. - infinium, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"DO NOT USE WINDEX OR ANYTHING ELSE CONTAINING AMMONIA TO CLEAN THIS ELEVATOR."
OMG what the helll is this stuff made out of. You can practically eat windex ala My Big Fat Greek Wedding. - Trekkie711, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1All we need now is some horzantal action and we have a TURBO LIFT!
- astrotrain, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2How about when power goes out?
Loose power, loose suction, your going for a fast ride.
Janitor: "Oye! that's the vacuvator plug you just unplugged!!!"
** faint sounds of screaming heard ** - nofxjunkee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yeah I noticed that they didn't list "because you're a lazy bastard" as a reason to get it. They got "to be high-tech" and "to look cool" as the first 2, but missed some actual valid reasons such as "you have trouble getting up and down stairs" (for whatever reason).
They'll have to do much better than 87 dB before anyone who wants this for looks & _style_ will go for it. At least, anyone with good taste (or just good hearing, that's really loud). -
