- raffij, on 10/12/2007, -0/+28Not really. It was only after YouTube removed the "offending" content. Same on you YouTube.
- JeffD, on 10/12/2007, -0/+25The title is inaccurate. The internet actually lost here. Turkey only allowed the site after the videos mocking their founder were removed. Freedom of speech -1 overreacting govenrmnet officials +1.
- Danial, on 10/12/2007, -5/+23Hey you morons, if it wasn't for Ataturk, Turkey would've been another Afghanistan.
You guys should read up on Mustafa Kemal Ataturk before coming up with ludicrous claims, especially you Greeks.
Ataturk modernized Turkey by abolishing Shariah, banning the veil and the fez, converted the Turkish language from Arabic to Latin script, adopted Swiss civil code, and other aspects of Western culture.
Ataturk also gave women in Turkey the right to vote before most European countries did, INCLUDING FRANCE!
That being said, while I'm a staunch admirer of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, I found the ban to be quite ridiculous and undemocratic, as well as very European-like, since France has banned Yahoo Auctions before due to the presence of Nazi memorabilia.
And before you all ask, I'm not Turkish. - latova, on 10/12/2007, -4/+20Here is an image to demonstrate how the block may have looked in the context of Senator Ted Stevens:

I'm no artist. It was made in about 2 minutes with google and gimp. - Koray, on 10/12/2007, -4/+15If Turkey has one rule, it's to never insult Ataturk. He is their hero. He is the founder of modern Turkey, freer of the people, enemy of oppression, etc. I do agree that this was an over reaction nonetheless, but I just wanted to put some perspective on the matter.
- kalidav, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11Really needs the next-generation of "internet-aware" judges who don't make stupid rulings like blocking websites. =P
- fremeer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11to turkey ataturk is like washington or lincoln. Cept some of the turks grandfathers were around when ataturk was alive. he is too close a memory to be left to the dust.
- Courthead, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9I highly doubt this will have a significant effect on their chances of joining the EU.
- dinosthegreek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7First of all, I respect Turkish people (and obviously, given my name, I am Greek), and do hope they one day join the European Union....However, this issue regarding Youtube, resembles a tactic a totalitarian regime would do, like China...where individual rights for freedom of speech and expression are given some boundaries and can be suspended at any time by the government. Do not think I don't understand the value of Ataturk's legacy in the modern Turkish nation, however I do not see why making fun of Ataturk would provoke a nationwide ban on a website....talk about a superiority complex. Hell I could care less if anyone made fun of my culture....Its their freedom of speech.....Would anyone in the U.S care if you made fun of Washington, Lincoln, Jefferson...etc? Yea, some would...but they wouldn't kill over it or ban an entire website because their perspective is different...
- Danial, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Easty, give it time and sooner or later you'll have reactionary morons blaming Islam.
Hell, you had tools blaming Islam for what happened in Utah, even though there was no evidence that the shooter was motivated by religion, so it's a given that morons will pin this on how evil Islam is roflmao - Danial, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8I agree with a lot that you said but one thing:
Who killed anyone over Ataturk being insulted? The biggest ***** who insult Ataturk are Islamic fundamentalist idiots, and this is coming from a Muslim.
I hold Ataturk in high esteem, but not enough to engage in stupid flamefests on YouTube. - rabidjester, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Google it - It's a joke, started during a US presidential debate :/
- BlackCow, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6lol, awh daddy took youtube away
- Danial, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7BadTastic, Turkish Cypriots were among the first to be enthusiastic about reunification and called for the resignation of Denktash, but the Greek Cypriots were being stubborn at the time back in 2002.
- karjala, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Yes but the video was deleted so who won really? Turkey or teh internets? Turkey
- DigitAl56K, on 10/12/2007, -7/+11If only Turkey had some perspective..
- doughboy334, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4pity south park wasn't able to capitalize on this. After seeing this week's it would be one hell of an episode.
- Easty, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Have we had someone blame this on Islam, despite Ataturk having actually abolished the veiling of women yet?
- xNIBx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4""""Who killed anyone over Ataturk being insulted?"""
How about the url=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Istanbul_Pogrom where 15 greeks died and thousands of greeks lost their houses/shops, greek women got raped, etc simply because there was a rumour that Kemal's house in salonica was bombed by greeks(which of course never happened, this was an organised plan by the turkish government to terrorize greeks in Istanbul and this lie was the excuse to do that).
There used to be hundreds of thousands greeks living in Istanbul, ever wondered why there are only couple thousands greeks now?
In any case, i am against any fascist decisions that limit freedom of speech. And most of Europe cant say "Omg, Turkey is barbaric cause they try to limit freedom of speech" because many european countries have laws which can put you into prison for just denying the jewish holocaust. Only stupid and nazi people deny the holocaust but by making the denial illegal, you automatically become an ***** fascist scum in my book.
As far as Kemal, yes if it wasnt for him, Turkey would have been just like other islamic countries. But thanks to him, Turkey is a semiwestern country. Many turks that live in instanbul/minor asia/western turkey are "westernised" but there are many turks who live in eastern turkey who are a long long way away from europe(culturally).
Turkey has 2 poles of power, the military and the islamic. Right now the military pole has the upper hand, which means that Turkey has a semidictatorship with limited human rights and few democratic procedures. On the other hand, the military pole keeps the fanatic islamists at bay. But if you weaken the military pole and make the country more "democratic"(meaning that the actual elected people will rule the country and not the military), the islamic pole will gain power.
Most turks are muslims. Although many of them are moderate muslims, its easy for fanatic muslims to gain power through the electoral process and then possibly convert turkey to an islamic state. This is exactly the reason why the military pole has so much power. It takes time to become democratic, you cannot simply enforce democracy to people. And Turkey slowly becomes more democratic. The more turkish people mature, the more they will realise that there is no need for fanaticism. And the more they realise that, the more democratic will become.
""" Shouldn't you be out aiding the PKK, as the Greeks have done previously? And you wonder why Turks don't like Greeks when the Greeks have no problem sheltering Kurdish terrorists such as Abdullah Ocalan. """
First of all, i doubt the official greek government had knowledge of Ocalan sheltering(not at first at least). If they had, they would probably cut a deal with the turks to turn him over(which is what probably happened in the end). But do you really want to talk about kurds? Seriously, do you? We are talking about a huge population, which has been oppressed for god knows how many years, which has even been denied of its own identity/independence, which inhabits a large part of turkey and which are very likely to detach completely from turkey. Lets not go there. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4for a muslim country that ataturk made illegal for women to wear a veil, i find it weird that their prime minister's wife wears one in public.
- lemur, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Sorry, isn't it supposed to be spelled "teh internets"?
- JDWTC, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Now if only they would ban blog spam from digg!!
- IllBeBack, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Thanks for that. Shoulda known "internets" came from Dubya.
- Danial, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3What about the British National Party in England?
Or the Aryan Brotherhood in America?
Or the Black Panthers?
Right wing fascism isn't limited to Turkey. Just look at what happened in Germany in '93 when neo-Nazis burned an apartment killing 15 Turkish immigrants and see that neo-Nazism is still alive and well in Europe.
You want to talk about Greece? Whatever happened to the Jews in Greece, especially Rhodes? Many of them were either killed or saved by the acts of Turkish diplomats.
I do agree Turkey has issues, and I was actually pretty saddened when Dink was murdered in cold blood for speaking the truth. Don't assume I'm a blind Turkish nationalist when I'm not even Turkish in the first place, and I am critical of how the Turkish government persecutes the Kurds, but when a government shelters Kurdish terrorists then they will suffer the same way the Taliban did after 9/11. One thing for sure: do not ***** with the Turkish military. Syria knows it, Iran knows it, and surely Greece does as well.
As for Greeks being expelled from Istanbul, yes that is a sad chapter in Turkish history and I for one am not proud of that. Even more unusual is the lack of international condemnation of the attack.
"Most turks are muslims. Although many of them are moderate muslims, its easy for fanatic muslims to gain power through the electoral process and then possibly convert turkey to an islamic state"
There is no way they will ever convert Turkey into an Islamic state. I used to believe that until I read an NY Times article about the state of Islam in the country, and mentioned poll results from a Turkish research institute stating the number of Turks for Shariah had actually decreased from 21 percent to 7 percent and the number of headscarf-clad women declining as well, despite Turks deeming themselves more religious. It's a paradox.
Plus they can't make it into an Islamic state when 25-30% of the population are Alevi Muslims. - kryp2nite, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3why should having a web2.0 company from turkey be the standard to be web accepted? Its completely irrelevant.
- kutsal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3While most of what you said is true, you're missing the fact that Ataturk is, like somebody mentioned above, still a recent memory.. There are people still alive in Turkey, who actually met him in person...
Give it time, and he will be historic enough that making fun of him won't offend people anymore.
I'm not sure how Americans would have behaved if somebody made fun of George Washington within a generation of his death... - Danial, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6Shouldn't you be out aiding the PKK, as the Greeks have done previously? And you wonder why Turks don't like Greeks when the Greeks have no problem sheltering Kurdish terrorists such as Abdullah Ocalan.
- kronix2, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Danial, great post. Most people don't know that Turkey was the first European country to give women the vote.
And yeah, I'm surprised that the LGF fanatics haven't turned up and posted comments blaming this on Islam and liberals. - farther, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The joke is used to denigrate Bush, not to "make him seem less stupid". Memes are more effective when properly understood.
- cozinator, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Now I'm starvin'. Earl, we got any Turkey back there?
- Danial, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Stupid Islamist *****, buried.
- JohntB, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I thought I read on boingboing.net (I can't find the link, unfortunately) that it seemed like the uploader had pulled the video, not Youtube.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4It has gone from 'not-a-chance' to 'hell-no'.
- kryp2nite, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1nice goin boyo, lots of insight in your comment. and btw "closed minded"? good work.
- kryp2nite, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Poles of power? I am half turkish half american and I have been living in Istanbul all my life. I have a grasp on what democracy really is and I believe that even though it isn't fully here yet, Turkey's democracy is getting much better. I for one don't believe there are so called "poles" yes there are people elected to sit in congress that are in favor of an islamic state, but in contrast to that there are many more people that believe in our democracy. Turkey's military doesn't cause it to be a dictatorship or it doesn't even limit human rights. Yes we do have laws in place that make it illegal to talk in vain about the flag or founder of the state. But that doesn't make us fascists or anything else. To be able to talk about Turkey you need to come see it and live it. Besides that your comments don't really amount to anything.
- kryp2nite, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1yea yea, read through the comments its a play on dubya's speech.
- kryp2nite, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I dont think that danial reacted properly obviously this person has some serious delusions but that doesnt make him a terrorist. Still gabriel01g you should get your facts straight
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2YouTube will drop pretty much anything that offends the kinds of people that will kill for being offended.
By the way, maybe they just dropped the local ban and banned YouTube from the entire planet, because YouTube's totally down right now. - kryp2nite, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1there are a lot of people commenting about the state of affairs without any proof whatsoever. I also agree that this move was extremely undemocratic, but you have to understand that courts don't really understand the mechanisms of the internet and instead of just blocking the video the whole site was blocked. but the court order specifically said that the block was in place until the video was removed. once it was removed the ban would be rescinded. I was reading through the comments on the original slashdot posting and wrote a piece about the comments there if anyones interested its at mgunay.wordpress.com
- RickySan65, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Internets??? It's internet!
- Kahraman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1yeah this is a great victory for the Turkish republic equivalent to gallipolli and the war of independence.
the internet is full of retarded people. now they know they'll get exposure, every tom dick and harry is going to try to insult Turks and become famous - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mZvIYA1ZU9s
pls check this, dunno y youtube no ban this adult content movie,,, - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2I think you should get raped...
ah, you win some, you lose some - varkoume, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2@ danial Greek Cypriots were stubborn and didn't vote Yes on the Annan plan because they wouldn't get anything. They wanted their land back and they were getting nothing.
Most of the plan was in favor of the Turkish Cypriot. Maybe they should vote Yes instead of No just to end this. - kronix2, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1What will prevent Turkey joining the EU are Greece, and opposition to an Islamic country joining a community of (largely) secular Christian countries. Yes, Turkey is secular, but are the Turkish people?
The nightmare scenario for some Europeans is Europe being populated by devout Muslims who demand that their host countries bend over backwards to accommodate Islam. - MrViklund, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3I think YouTube should ban Turkey.
- cowabuse, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Mustafa Kemal Ataturk is a closed minded prick who got into power by sleeping with men. He also molested little boys.
- anatoliansky, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1İn global internet services; people never think about national or local cultural issues but sometimes reactions may be useful ( yeah! i think there are more consistent ways to react) in establishing ethical boundary !
- raynevandunem, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Don't try to argue with Danial. He's still stuck on how Turkey compares historically with the US, but still can't fathom how Turkey has a bad case of fascism. Not Islamofascism, just pure Nazi-grade right-wing fascism.
