LO (crash)
LOGIN. - jaygeeze, on 11/15/2009, -24/+135I thought Al Gore invented the internet... who is this Tim Berners-Lee guy?
- fritzek, on 11/15/2009, -17/+125What I hate about these articles lately is how there always has to be iPhone. Yes, it's a cool phone, but people are presenting it as the breakthrough in all the technological fields.
- tech9, on 11/15/2009, -0/+95seeing that old napster interface brings back memories of good times...
- VinceIP, on 11/15/2009, -6/+99I don't see mention of 4chan in this article.
- effingham, on 11/15/2009, -0/+85Napoleon Dynamite helped invent the PC modem?
- TheCollective00, on 11/15/2009, -2/+58Noone on the internet wants to admit that they are who they are today because of 4chan.
- burrdugg, on 11/15/2009, -2/+50"LOL" followed by a masturbating stick figure.
- bigstinky, on 11/16/2009, -0/+41Dugg for tech hitting the front page.
- captininsanity, on 11/16/2009, -0/+40:-) apparently over time emoticons lost their noses... :(
- LibertariansLOL, on 11/15/2009, -7/+45maybe both of you retards should stop willingly pretending he said he invented the internet
- Heath05, on 11/16/2009, -1/+37Just curious, why wasn't BitTorent included?
- MidnightFox, on 11/15/2009, -5/+40as for the future, someone finally invents a way for me to allow my fist to travel through my screen and slug the ass hole on the other side.
- tresbizarre, on 11/16/2009, -0/+34"2003: CAN-SPAM Act puts a lid on unsolicited emails"
Yep, fixed that problem right up. Now if you'll excuse me I'm going to buy a Ro1ex to put on my en larged penes. - valetudomexican, on 11/15/2009, -6/+39The queen of Spain is credited with funding Columbus' journey. Gore never said he "invented" the internet. That is a misquote that was spread by Rush and his ilk. All he said was that he took initiative and championed its funding. It's not like everyone knew the internet was a great idea at the time. Gore was one of the few that saw its potential, and because he did, you are able to bitch about liberals all you want on digg.
- dillonflynn, on 11/15/2009, -2/+34What year did they start building the tubes?
- pfhayter, on 11/16/2009, -0/+32I don't think "The World" has changed their site since they first launched.
http://www.theworld.com/ - burrdugg, on 11/15/2009, -0/+23There was a time you could map the entire internet on a single sheet of paper. And I presume you could download its entire content on 1 drive.
- AiR1890, on 11/15/2009, -2/+24I do not miss dial up at all, remember when you were downloading music from kazza, a few 4mb mp3s took forever on dailup, and then your mom or dad tried to use the phone, and you got yelled at for using the internet, remember when the dial up would just quit on you while you were downloading these mp3s, I got so mad, it took forever to download just a few mp3s. Then I got cable internet from WOW, it was before youtube launched, my oh my was I thrilled, after many, many months of begging, I finally convinced my parents to get cable internet, after I went to a friends house and discovered he had cable internet, and I could not believe the speeds, and being able to use the internet and the phone at the same time was something I could not believe. The day I got my cable internet was probably the best day of my life. My parents liked being able to use a phone while I was using the internet. How things have changed in such a few short years.
- bmw112208, on 11/15/2009, -2/+24I haven't used the internet in years.
- stillhateyou, on 11/16/2009, -5/+26It's not listed as a breakthrough as this isn't a list of breakthroughs. The iPhone has set the standard for Internet Enabled phones. Sure, they existed before the iPhone, but they all sucked ass. Since the iPhone was initially announced and released, the world of smartphones has gotten far more interesting than it used to be.
The iPhone is deserving of a spot on this list, especially given that things as lame as AOL and the emoticon are on there. If we were in fact talking about a list of technological breakthroughs, you'd have a point. - dillonflynn, on 11/15/2009, -1/+17This article was authored by Kim Jong-Il, the world's premier Internet expert.
- TheCollective00, on 11/15/2009, -0/+14I'm not using the internet right now.
- wissler, on 11/16/2009, -10/+24Dugg for Ron Paul.
- picsectionpleez, on 11/15/2009, -3/+17What they mean is that Ron Paul used the Internet *primarily* -almost exclusively- to raise funds. He was all about grass roots, instead of political cronies. Not that I voted for him, but still...
- boognishi, on 11/16/2009, -0/+13And now... The History of the Nutshell on the Internet
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nut - branton87, on 11/15/2009, -1/+14Trolls would go extinct.
- darklights, on 11/16/2009, -0/+12More like everybody would get punched.
- fritzek, on 11/15/2009, -2/+14Your first day on internet?
- TakeyMcTaker, on 11/16/2009, -1/+13There's no such thing as a time before porn. Ancient Egyptians were apparently both the first furries, and the first to experiment with SM. They also only had 2D side-scrollers.
- tresbizarre, on 11/16/2009, -2/+14In May 2005, the organizers of the Webby Awards for online achievements honored Al Gore with a lifetime achievement award for three decades of contributions to the Internet. "He is indeed due some thanks and consideration for his early contributions," said Vint Cerf.
http://www.snopes.com/quotes/internet.asp - Protuhj, on 11/16/2009, -0/+12I would say the main reason that google grew in popularity so fast from the start was that its front page wasn't cluttered like Yahoo! or Hotbot, it didn't take 15 seconds to load if you just wanted to search for something real fast.
THEN people found out how fast it was at finding results. At least that was how my experience went. - bated321, on 11/15/2009, -3/+14The history of the internet? As in a timie before porn? Scary...
- mrBitch, on 11/16/2009, -0/+11I remember people asking for a floppy disk with the Windows 3.11 drivers and software to allow TCP/IP connections via their modem ... "is that the whole internet?"
"Yes, that's the internet on that 360K floppy disk."
Also, FTA :
" .. When Apple pulled out of the AppleLink program in 1989, the project was renamed and America Online was born. AOL, still in existence today, later on made the Internet popular amongst the average internet users."
Wow, Apple was everywhere... - wpf999, on 11/16/2009, -0/+111998 - Napster. The golden age of the Internet. Nearly brought tears to my eyes.
- el_jefe, on 11/16/2009, -0/+10"Help! I'm in a nutshell! How did I get into this bloody great big nutshell? What kind of shell has a nut like this?"
- javaj, on 11/16/2009, -0/+10Cool that digg was mentioned, but surprised they never mentioned slashdot, considering that /. was 'social media' and a 'social news site' born 7 years prior. I would say it was more than likely /. that paved the way for sites such as Digg, Reddit etc.,
- mrBitch, on 11/16/2009, -0/+9@ stillhateyou, RE: " .. It's not listed as a breakthrough as this isn't a list of breakthroughs. The iPhone has set the standard for Internet Enabled phones.

Agree, and good point. - goffy59, on 11/16/2009, -1/+10Ron Paul!
- FordTheFin, on 11/16/2009, -4/+13Al Gore took some credit for something he was largely responsible for the funding of. "Took the initiative in creating the internet" is no worse than any other politician saying they "created new jobs."
- seaofcheese, on 11/15/2009, -4/+13Got to digg for digg.
- Duncster, on 11/16/2009, -1/+10with no legs
- firesinis, on 11/16/2009, -0/+8Pictures of NCSA Mosaic and Netscape Navigator are not accurate for the years presented, because both are shown running under Win 9x, which wasn't available before 1995.
- rft3rd, on 11/16/2009, -0/+8I hated setting that up on my BBS.... I should bury this whole article for the fact that BBS's only got a 1 liner. They WERE the communications portals before Prodigy, AOL and CompuServe.I used to have 50 callers a night calling into my parents basement to my board. 3 14.4 and 1 28.8 hooked up to my 4 phone lines. Spent all my lawn mowing money on modems and memory upgrades to my 486dx...All to watch people play LORD and BRE
- compulsive1, on 11/15/2009, -0/+8Good old times. Compuserve and Delphi were my choice back in 1988/89.
Atari ST computer with 36kbs modem got me on line and I could download news and usenet for a few minutes- for reading later off line. It was expensive- in addition to monthly fees there was local phone bill to worry about. I can't believe it's been 20 years... - DifferentAngle, on 11/16/2009, -1/+9Tim Berners-Lee inventing the internet is as much of a myth as Al Gore. He wrote software that ran on the already existing internet.
- computrius, on 11/16/2009, -0/+7This is a misconception because people dont seem to know the difference between www/http (which is just one of several things that MAKE USE of the internet) and the internet.
The internet is not www, www is not everything internet. Its a subprotocol of a protocol. WWW is to http is to the internet as ANSI escape codes are to telnet is to the internet. - dsmx, on 11/16/2009, -0/+7Netscape navigator was basically genesis for modern web browsing.
- Rocketbird, on 11/16/2009, -1/+7OGC
- HonoredMule, on 11/16/2009, -3/+9Sure, but Lee isn't credited with inventing the internet either, but rather with inventing the web--which he did.
