- JiMidnite, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Hey,
I'm the author of the site. Once the site is back up (and let me publicly thank my ISP for handling this so gracefully), I'd appreciate any contributions you might have.
The reason the splash section is not a Wiki or a Wiki-like solution is that I have fairly strict quality requirements regarding presented screenshots and information. So, for example, the screenshots should be PNGs or other lossless format, they should be cropped properly, the user information should be blanked in a specific way, etc. I'm afraid that opening the site up would lead to decrease in quality.
Also, I don't really intend to have all the splashes from all the apps, but those that were otherwise important, popular, interesting, groundbreaking, etc.
So, in a nutshell: quality over quantity. :)
Having said that, if you think GUIdebook is missing some important splashes, or you could fill in some blanks, please let me know via email mwichary@gmail.com or a contact form. There were many people already who contributed to this section particularly and made it much better than I could've done alone.
Thanks in advance! - leanweb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2to those who underestimate the digg effect: DONT ;)
guidebookgallery.org is pulling pretty heavy traffic on a regular day (its pretty much _all_ media/image files) add DIGG on top of that, and it becomes rather tough to sustain unless you're google.
even pointing at google cache doesnt help as much because all the images are served from original server and not from google.
anyhow, i realize this is an inconvenience and let me assure you, site'll be back up just as soon as it moves off first pages of digg. i beg for your understanding and patience. - dipswitch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Splash screens are really just marketing. And lazyness from programmers who can't make their app load quickly. They're evil. Gnome 2.14 really doesn't need one anymore. KDE should abandon it too. It's loading time is a PITA. It's lead to the horrid prelink.
Never create a splash screen for your application. The users will be excited about it if it feels like a lightweight, not bloated application. If coded nicely, word processors, webbrowsers etc. can actually load quite quickly, especially now that anything below 1GHz is considered old. - JoshM, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1http://72.14.207.104/search?q=cache:dQkOOKU1hLQJ:www.guidebookgallery.org/splashes+&hl=en&gl=hk&ct=clnk&cd=1&client=firefox-a
Googles Cache - foxhoundadmin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0digg effect.
digg doesn't auto coral cache, because kevin commented on how it "steals" page hits (which can be VERY important to some) from web pages. - frozendice, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Why doesn't dig just automaticly have coral cache grab a copy of whatever page, when the article is submited, to prevent this waste of time.
- foxhoundadmin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1wait, kevin dugg this. why doesn't he just come in here and explain why auto coral caching is a bad idea?
- tj9991, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is sad :(
- FlyingLlama, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0quick to the coral cache!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+06 hours
- hordak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Doh! Asleep at the wheel here. :)
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This could be huge if enough people contribute. If it isn't already (I could only try a couple pages before it crapped out on me), it should be a wiki. Imagine splashes of nearly every app out there on every platform. Sweet! I really dig historical geek stuff like this. :D
- pigonthewing, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i got one view in before the whole thing went down..
"This Account Has Been Suspended" - zoltan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i will always remember the program from a 'badass' splash screen
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Leonaken said "Actually, Seumas, CORAL caches ammend all links on the pages to go to cached pages. It doesn't work on only one page at a time."
Hm. I never noticed that. Then yeah - no reason not to implement that. Better than hoping the submitter or the first few people who visit the site will do it. - zoltan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i imagine caching thee site will call on, at least, an aol grade server. digg has like at least 5 mil hits a day with about lets say 3 mil requesting just that page... maybe we should all join a 'broadband rebels network' that will unite all of our possible idle bandwidth and form a net that could outperform a lot of providers :-)
- zoltan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Please contact the billing/support department as soon as possible."
ruh row - Leonaken, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Actually, Seumas, CORAL caches ammend all links on the pages to go to cached pages. It doesn't work on only one page at a time.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0My two "Blast from the Past" parody Windows NT splash screens from the mid 90's. It used to be pretty easy to replace splash screens and the "Microsoft NT Server: Neanderthal Technology" was actually loaded on servers all over the world
Microsoft NT Server: Neanderthal Technology
"Me discover fire, invent wheel, build server" "Microsoft Cave Office"
http://www.jokewallpaper.com/jokepayed2002/html/086.php
Medusasoft Windows NT Server
"This product is protected by US and international copyright laws and a bunch of really mean poisonous snakes. Oh, sorry, those snakes are actually our corporate attorneys."
http://www.jokewallpaper.com/jokepayed2002/html/086.php
(and no, I didn't copy these of some other Web site...I'm the actual person who created them) - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0foxhoundadmin said "wait, kevin dugg this. why doesn't he just come in here and explain why auto coral caching is a bad idea?"
What purpose would it serve? It would only cache the first page. Unless you wanted them to write some sort of script that would walk the dugg site and cache it. But then where do you stop? - zoltan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0looks like leanwebhosting is quite lean afterall.. too bad its not running rich like my mazda
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0oops. The Medusasoft link should be...
http://www.jokewallpaper.com/jokepayed2002/html/076.php - gekkokid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Redbeard25 nice idea :)
- Zippo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'll come back to this in a day or so.
- redbeard25, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I still think there's a way that Digg could implement Coral in a way that would be unobtrusive... like as a second link that could get dugg to the top if the original link is broken.
- bigteebo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Some day the web will never have "dugg" or "slashdotted". Someday. And when that day comes, I'll be in my flying car.
- leanweb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0yup, thanks alterself, fixed typo.
thats what happens when you type friendly messages at 3am while trying to figure out DIGG-effect from DDoS ;)
btw, i am personally a huge fun of this resource. the quality and how well crafted this collection is. mostly, of course the content.
ah, sweet nostalgie... ;) - alterself, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"We've been digg'ed or slashdotted or otherwise under unusualy heavy traffic."
spellcheck? - mechengr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0DIGG EFFECT!!
- nebunezzar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0at least they have a cool "we're down" page.
- cubbieco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I can't digg a page that forces me to maximize my browser to be able to read all of the content. You should never have to scroll sideways to read a line of text.
- m0bitz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is kinda cool. Really brings back memories of my days in the computer lab, waiting for someting to finally get through the print queue.
+ digg - Icefreez, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I liked the suspended page :)
- leanweb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0the site is back online. but please be gentle, dont tell all your friend all at once, let it spread a little ;)
cubbieco, i think you missed the point. it works this way because of the nature of this stuff, not ill will of the author. in fact you get access to much much more info than you would with a more conventional layout.
either way, its a very small price to pay for the fun of looking back in time. ah, the sweet nostalgie ;)
enjoy! - qixuan214, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Out Of Order
- swingkat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I thought this was a great post. It's interesting how some old splash screens can really bring back some memories. It's interesting someone realized this and compiled them. Who knows if you can even load some of those old apps anymore.

I like the fact digg'ed is listed before slashdotted. - Mr.Glass, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0digg effect after 90 diggs.
- stlcadet11, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0i like the we have been dugg page lol
- yahoofrom, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0digg effected;;
- Jaxor, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0@foxhoundadmin:
I agree; very true indeed.
lol! Has Google's cache has been hit by the digg effect too?
Want to dig, but haven't seen any content... - Jolene, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0The page is. As the page it self states. "Out Of Order"...
Yay for the Digg effect!!! - hordak, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0digg effect already? This posting has only been up for 32 minutes!! :S
- daedal, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Dug to death:
"We've been digg'ed or slashdotted or otherwise under unusualy heavy traffic.
Its the flip side of popularity. Our website is under unusually heavy load. We have to limit access to the website in order to let situation "cool off" a bit.
Please come back in a few hours!" - intoflatlines, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0boo

What is Digg?
