- alamedaman, on 07/15/2009, -1/+66at first facebook was exclusive because you had to have a university email to join. Now anyone can join, and the amount of spam has increased.
***** myspace and idiots who are on it with FLASHING things everywhere and like 15 songs and videos all loading at once, killing even the strongest browser. - jubeininja69, on 07/15/2009, -1/+60all of my friends on facebook are in college or have college degrees. can't really say the same for myspace.
- Smegzor, on 07/15/2009, -2/+60MySpace has risen to Ghetto status.
- orbish, on 07/15/2009, -2/+5225 Year old white male who left myspace specifically because of bling bling pictures.
- gridbread, on 07/15/2009, -0/+48Myspace has always been garbage.
- Lucas123, on 07/15/2009, -2/+31Is this an opportunity for gentrification on MySpace in the future?
- Pitak89, on 07/15/2009, -0/+29I never mingled with that Myspace riff raff anyway.
- MaxMWood, on 07/15/2009, -2/+28The only thing I ever ever use MySpace for is for looking at unsigned bands or uploading my bands music. It's a good place for bands to network, better than Facebook. But that's it. Maybe MySpace should focus on that?
- CrazyEddie041, on 07/15/2009, -0/+24Whoooooosh...

- NathanLoehlein, on 07/27/2009, -1/+21Myspace is stuck in the web of 1999. Blink, marquee, whatever hideous other effects people can find to put on their page, you'll be able to find them on nearly every Myspace page.
It's no wonder people are flocking to something that doesn't cause seizures to look at. - chrismwood, on 07/15/2009, -1/+20in the ghettoooooooo!
/background Cartman voice - w13rdo, on 07/15/2009, -1/+18Too many adds, too busy. Facebook > MySpace for the same reasons that Google > Yahoo, and the rise and fall follows a parallel arc. And now with Facebook trying to cram more "social networking" into their more minimalist design, eventually it too will become too cluttered. Unfortunately (imo), the trend seems to be moving toward more and more soundbites/quotables/retweetable chunks. I remember, now with some bit of nostalgia, the days of BBSes when debates and discussions, a post would often consist of paragraphs, maybe even scrolling. A one line post was considered an impolite drive-by. Now 140 characters is the arbitrary maximum and if you can't say something memorable or meaningful in less than that, you risk irrelevance.
- lebruf, on 07/15/2009, -5/+22We'll be reading about the exodus from Facebook soon enough. I give it 3 years.
- 4AntiStupid, on 07/15/2009, -1/+17Of course the same will likely happen to Facebook eventually. Someone will come up with a better application and get some marketing cash behind it.
- inactive, on 07/15/2009, -2/+18Now with more white people!
- rinote, on 07/15/2009, -1/+17Too many gross ads on myspace drove me away. Either they want to convince you to whiten your teeth or lose your belly fat with 4chan worthy shock photos. ***** myspace.
- tEhKewleSt, on 07/15/2009, -2/+16Well, now when you say that it makes you racist apparently.
- Treshnell, on 07/15/2009, -1/+15Can't say that about Facebook so much, either, these days.
- nepidae, on 07/15/2009, -3/+17Too much gang violence I guess.
- CrazyEddie041, on 07/15/2009, -6/+18This article is full of crap. They're just trying to push race into it to try and make themselves relevant. People left myspace because with that amount of customization available, you get millions of halfwits splashing thousands of application onto one screen and making these horrible jungles of webpages. Facebook forced users to follow a certain format, so it came of as much more crisp and clean, while still allowing users to personalize their pages. Race had absolutely nothing to do with it at all.
- borez, on 07/15/2009, -4/+15As the masses fly
On a cold and gray Myspace morn
A poor little baby user is born
In the ghetto
And Tom cries
'cause if there's one thing that he don't need
it's another little hungry mouth to lose
To the Facebooks - dbz253, on 07/15/2009, -0/+10don't count on it. when people stop being interested in a website, it stays dead. i really don't see them making any huge revolution in content that facebook couldn't copy pretty easily
- ljohnblaze, on 07/16/2009, -2/+11Why is a "ghetto" of the digital landscape inherently non-white? MySpace was about profiles, Facebook captured the 'social network'. It's not white flight, it's a better alternative - for now. "Hey, I heard that today's non-whites are capable of adopting new sites for sticking with the times". Nonsense.
I think the thing we should discuss is why scholars are investing time pinning an outdated and weak social construct like 'race' to a space-less, nation-less, non-physical medium medium like the web (and SNS's). If we think people care, then we'll care and it's real.
Race as we know it is a volunteered constant online. Look around on either site and try to get a feel of the "race" factor in profile creation and close groups of online friends. Besides a profile picture, there's just not much else to hang on to in studying race online - at least not in this sense. - inactive, on 07/15/2009, -1/+10I left Myspace because of all the ***** music and glittery backgrounds. Hopefully Facebook never allows customized backgrounds.
- bdbr, on 07/16/2009, -0/+8MySpace isn't disgusting. It just provides people the tools to make awesomely bad pages.
- 1SteveMc, on 07/15/2009, -1/+9Take me back... http://www.geocities.com/icyhotstuntazz/
- twentyonexnine, on 07/15/2009, -1/+8I can not digg you enough sir. Thanks for the chuckle.
- orbish, on 07/15/2009, -0/+6Yes, it's comeback will mirror that of friendster.
- Gumphlumph, on 07/15/2009, -2/+8Anyone remember Friendster?
- Toshibi, on 07/16/2009, -1/+7I haven't signed into myspace in a few months. I had a facebook account for a few years, but suddenly, everyone went over to facebook, and that's where I started going to stay in touch with friends.
Now, on facebook, I've run into some friends that I hadn't been in touch with for years, mostly because myspace is not the sort of place I think they would be caught dead in. Looking back on myspace, it was only very good for a month or so back in 2007 I think. - mrdude4290, on 07/15/2009, -2/+8"But Stooksberry kind of misses the "ghetto." Back in her MySpace days, she was often contacted by guys she didn't know in hopes of connecting — and they were rarely white."
Yeah she misses that jungle fever! - dhVyse, on 07/15/2009, -1/+6Yeah, I haven't signed into myspace since I created my facebook account.
- phylaxer, on 07/15/2009, -6/+11i'm pretty sure it has nothing to do with race and more to do with where they go to school and what type of work a person does, economics, culture, etc. but of course, having a responsible explanation doesn't get her the attention she craves.
- CynicalTyler, on 07/15/2009, -0/+5Then why don't you go Digg that article?
- thal3s, on 07/16/2009, -0/+5Unfortunately, i've seen the same disgusting teeth whitening banners here on Digg too...
You're right about the pics they use - they're like Madison Avenue's in-house goatse pics. - otterp, on 07/15/2009, -0/+5Both of these trends, older people joining facebook and white flight from myspace were reported a couple years ago.
- Cockslap, on 07/16/2009, -1/+6We can pray that a tornado comes through and wipes it out.
- facsimilesmiles, on 07/16/2009, -2/+7I don't think this is legitimately a race issue; most of the people I know who left Myspace did so for aesthetic reasons. Myspace has customizable pages, sure, but Facebook actually turned out to be the more dynamic, fluid site. It's the difference between a teen's need to express their individuality and the more refined desire to see and hear what others have to say.
- alexlavr, on 07/15/2009, -2/+7Myspace is sketchy
- yocouchdigga, on 07/16/2009, -1/+6tl;dr
^_^ - diggapleeeze, on 07/15/2009, -1/+5No, only people who want their ***** to be out there for all to see do it, not FB. Privacy settings are there for a reason.
- ronfez, on 07/16/2009, -0/+4Daaaamnn, you high falootin.
- d3dm, on 07/16/2009, -1/+5If MySpace is the ghetto, then what does that make Geocities, Calcutta?
- martalli, on 07/16/2009, -0/+4Three years is an eternity on the Internet!
