This place is like paradise!- tj111, on 04/11/2008, -4/+69Plus, its required that every employee spend 20% of their time working on a project they like.
- SniperGX1, on 04/11/2008, -7/+8Nope it's not. Most employees never get the approval to work on a 20% project. When they do it's a 120% project. Not that it's inappropriate for them to require you to spend 100% of your time doing the work you were hired to do, but your assumption is wrong.
- Dested, on 04/11/2008, -0/+7Do you have any references to support your claims?
- knetworx, on 04/11/2008, -1/+2Only after they've been there for a period of time (either 90 days or 6 months, if I remember correctly.) But yes, still an awesome perk.
- crash331, on 04/11/2008, -2/+11It's only for software engineers, not all employees. Trust me, I worked there. Got paid $11/hr to do ***** work and no 20% time.
We did get free lunch, free redbull and vitamin water, free snacks, and on Fridays we stopped working 2 hours early and drank free beer. But unless you are salaried then the actual work part is just like any other Fortune 500 company.- crash331, on 04/11/2008, -5/+1And most people there smoke weed. We used to leave at lunch every day with managers and smoke while crusing around.
- BirdCatcher, on 04/11/2008, -1/+26Yeah when I worked there the bathroom attendant even divided my lines of coke for me in the bathroom.
- supermanKD, on 04/11/2008, -0/+6Wow google employees sort and drink pop in the bathroom. Those guys must smoke a lot of weed.
- YoctoYotta, on 04/11/2008, -0/+3He's clearly talking about portioning coal fuel, not Coca Cola.
- Kloud, on 04/11/2008, -0/+3facepalm.jpg
- spyrochaete, on 04/11/2008, -0/+5Not true. I was working with a guy in Google's Marketing department this week who said he is also invited to contribute 20% of his (additional) time to a project of his choice. He's not an engineer.
- HalfGiraffe, on 04/11/2008, -0/+10Well that's nothing compared to the perks I received as governor of New York State.
- ligyron, on 04/11/2008, -1/+0Yeah I worked at Google for a while too. You know those soundproof domes they have where you can sleep? Everyone would get in them to do heroin. We did this everyday. The veins in most people's arms have practically collapsed so they had to inject it into their feet. Good times
- zephyr42, on 04/11/2008, -2/+40It's why for a while they were getting over 10,000 applications and resumes a day.
It's also the reason they're ranked (for several years) the best place to work in the entire US. - GoneFishing, on 04/11/2008, -0/+16Well, if you pick the top 0.1% of 10,000 a day, pretty sure they can justify themselves with the high six figure income.
- xptoast, on 04/11/2008, -2/+22It is wonderful they help those that wish to adopt. Kids rock. I sure wish I could have a family. Crazy wife left:(
- raytibbitts, on 04/11/2008, -1/+29Count your blessings. My crazy wife stayed.
"Sickness and Health" you know.
God, I hope she doesn't ever read this.- xptoast, on 04/11/2008, -0/+15Counseling and stuff can help. No wife you cant help. Speak up if you need to. You are a man right? Can't fix what is not known to be broken. Don't be a "yes dear" kind of man please.
- raytibbitts, on 04/11/2008, -0/+3Counseling is a help, but it is nothing compared to the effect of medications.
Just wish there were some medication that worked for her, that didn't also have such boring side effects, well you know... - xptoast, on 04/11/2008, -0/+1I have some good advice so if you ever need any help with that just figure out a way to email me or something through the account here. Or leave a comment on my website. giftofexistence.com
I have a comment box there for people to get in touch without spamming my email lol.
- raytibbitts, on 04/11/2008, -0/+3Counseling is a help, but it is nothing compared to the effect of medications.
- thetanman, on 04/11/2008, -10/+3LOL.
- xptoast, on 04/11/2008, -0/+15Counseling and stuff can help. No wife you cant help. Speak up if you need to. You are a man right? Can't fix what is not known to be broken. Don't be a "yes dear" kind of man please.
- jun2san, on 04/11/2008, -0/+4That was the most depressing comment I have ever read on digg.
- raytibbitts, on 04/11/2008, -1/+29Count your blessings. My crazy wife stayed.
- houndeyex, on 04/11/2008, -0/+25I'm sure these guys work hard. You don't get all that out of pure goodwill.
- xptoast, on 04/11/2008, -0/+5They are shown appreciation in a human way in which most companies do not do. I was blessed enough to have my first job where I currently work be a company that is similar in that it cares about the people and not the id of the people.
- sinurgy, on 04/11/2008, -0/+4That's exactly what I was thinking. While I have zero doubts it is great place to work, citing high salaries, perks, etc. doesn't mean as much unless you also cite the average hours worked per week.
- nbcaffeine, on 04/11/2008, -0/+3I have two friends who I interned with in NY that are now working in CA for them. I asked them how the area's night life was. He basically said "... nightlife? Whats that?"
They don't even see their own apartment that much, let alone the surrounding area. But then again, they are overachieving nerds.
- OilyTheOtter, on 04/11/2008, -4/+53Since the page is down, here are the salaries they list:
Google Programmer in Phoenix - $174,000/year
Google Programmer in California - $197,000/year
Google Programmer in Chicago - $222,000/year
Google Programmer in New York - $242,000/year
(according to Indeed.com)- knetworx, on 04/11/2008, -2/+16Those are eventual numbers. A few of my friends got jobs there when we graduated last May; they started at $80,000. Funny thing is, based on the cost of living out there in Cali, they're actually making less than I am. Gotta love the Midwest. They're paying twice as much for half the living space, and I don't have to deal with the ridiculous traffic. Oh well, to each his own.
- skinjester, on 04/11/2008, -0/+3agreed. some people don't really care for the midwest despite low cost housing and so forth. To each his own :)
- kaplanfx, on 04/12/2008, -0/+1We live in Cali, you lose.
- nakp88d, on 04/11/2008, -0/+4These seem a bit more realistic.
http://www.payscale.com/research/US/Employer=Googl ...- spyrochaete, on 04/11/2008, -0/+1$90k for technical writers is incredibly high. Average starting salary for tech writers is about $40-$45k. Considering the quality of the Google documentation I've had to work with their tech writers are paid way too much. I bet they're engineers, which would explain why they make so many assumptions about what average people (like me) know before reading.
- diggsilva, on 07/10/2008, -0/+1Starting salary doesn't mean entry-level salary.
Lots of people get hired at Google in a senior or experienced position. They still get a "starting salary" but don't expect them to be right out of school.
- knetworx, on 04/11/2008, -2/+16Those are eventual numbers. A few of my friends got jobs there when we graduated last May; they started at $80,000. - Tralobyte, on 04/11/2008, -0/+11There's no way in hell those are starting salaries. I've heard starting salaries at companies like Google and Microsoft, and believe me, they're high, but they're not six figures (except under unusual circumstances). These figures are probably in adding stocks, including stocks when Google went public.
- Tralobyte, on 04/11/2008, -0/+2meant to say "...probably adding in stocks,.."
- undersky, on 04/11/2008, -0/+2no they are not. i work in one of those top valley companies as well and know many people in Google, Apple, Cisco, Microsoft, Ebay, Adobe, etc. Starting salary wise low starts at $79000, medium is low five figure, with companies such as Cisco or Google and Microsoft, high into $140k. Anything above that would be in the realm of experienced hires.
- yunus, on 04/11/2008, -0/+1Why not, its still lower than what companies pay to hire contractors for software programming and much cheaper than what the government pays most contractors who do high end computer programming.
- exomni, on 04/11/2008, -6/+22" Got the munchies? "
Whoa. Gormet food AND they tolerate smoking pot on the job?
Screw heaven, how do I get into google?- TomTruelle, on 04/11/2008, -20/+5You're an idiot.
- bumcheck, on 04/11/2008, -4/+7Shut up, douche.
- TomTruelle, on 04/12/2008, -1/+1I wish someone would explain to me why he isnt an idiot.
- ZippyV, on 04/11/2008, -2/+1Who needs pot when you can have free massages and sauna?
- Kloud, on 04/11/2008, -0/+5You've obviously never smoked cannabis.
- ZippyV, on 04/11/2008, -1/+2You're right. I can't stand the smell and the ridiculous behavior of people who are high. Why would I want to become one of them?
- Zenshai, on 04/11/2008, -0/+1I do
- Kloud, on 04/11/2008, -0/+5You've obviously never smoked cannabis.
- TomTruelle, on 04/11/2008, -20/+5You're an idiot.
- carcass350, on 04/11/2008, -1/+33Those perks mean so little to me. I used to work at a place that had
-Massages 2 times a week
-Company vacation (one time was Ritz in Puerto Rico)
-Beer in the fridge for Friday
-All the free food/drinks you could want
-30 days vacation your first year
-Monthly company outings
-Some of the offices had pool tables, pinball, etc
-Cool Christmas gifts(Wiis last year)
All the perks were great but all did was mask how much the work sucked. Just because the perks are cool does not mean that you will actually like working there. If you don't enjoy what your doing for 8-10 hours a day all the perks in the world won't make you happy.- fabriciom, on 04/11/2008, -1/+2I though I was the only thinking that. I live and work in Madrid, Spain and the information technology field is just nasty. People always measuring you to see who knows the most, constant mistreatment from boss trying to look smart in front of everyone. I just gave up and quit my job. I'm going back to school and doing something other than IT.
- jemka, on 04/11/2008, -5/+2I thoughed that too.
- SuckMyDigg, on 04/11/2008, -0/+5Sounds like my first ISP job. Till they got all big and went gang-busters on everything. No more table tennis in the break room, no more company fun times, except the usual friday-night-ha-ha-im-not-on-call-this-week-lets-all-go-to-the-bar gag, and they fired all the good people.
Corporatization is a dirty ass business.
- fabriciom, on 04/11/2008, -1/+2I though I was the only thinking that. I live and work in Madrid, Spain and the information technology field is just nasty. - wolferz, on 04/11/2008, -3/+1so you're surprised by how high the salaries are.. but then immediately make them sound lower than they should be by claiming that you think they are starting salaries...
- rootfiend, on 04/11/2008, -0/+3Starting saliaries at Google are nowhere near those numbers. There's news of them being extremely high this year for Stanford CS grads but still nowhere near those numbers. http://www.techcrunch.com/2008/01/30/stanford-comp ...
- bubba9999, on 04/11/2008, -0/+4Not starting. A friend just started working in programming @ Mountain View campus making $66k/yr. Which is not at all bad though, and he loves the job and the environment.
- caketank, on 04/11/2008, -0/+4He'd better love the job, because for $66k in Mountain View he won't have much free money to do anything else.
- edicius, on 04/12/2008, -0/+1Doesn't sound like he'll need it.
- caketank, on 04/11/2008, -0/+4He'd better love the job, because for $66k in Mountain View he won't have much free money to do anything else.

- krofh, on 04/11/2008, -9/+41I'd give your mom my left testicle to work there.
- drafhk, on 04/11/2008, -6/+28I'd let your mom work my left testicle.
- oo7b0nds, on 04/11/2008, -3/+49i'd let your testicle to work my mo-...wait.
- TheImmigrant, on 04/11/2008, -9/+1your thinking too small, Id give my penis to work there
- stellarceltic, on 04/11/2008, -0/+11And you say HE's thinking too small?
- omnithought, on 04/11/2008, -5/+52I'd give your mom's left testicle to work there.

- drafhk, on 04/11/2008, -6/+28I'd let your mom work my left testicle.
- digitalpencil, on 04/11/2008, -4/+7why the left?
- expert01, on 04/11/2008, -5/+2Ever heard the expression "Suck my left nut, make my right one jealous"? That's why.
- h4rdcor3, on 04/11/2008, -1/+15he already lost the right
- acidandspatter, on 04/11/2008, -0/+11to get a job at Microsoft
- buddamus, on 04/11/2008, -6/+17I would give a blowjob to hitler to work there
- Pake, on 04/11/2008, -7/+2Whatever hand you use, you remove the opposite testicle.
- twertyto, on 04/11/2008, -2/+32You know I said that to a prospective employer once. I didn't get the position.
- Myonosken, on 04/11/2008, -1/+1Who wouldn't!

- jun2san, on 04/11/2008, -0/+2You do know that hitler had syphilis right?
- NathanMahdavi, on 04/11/2008, -1/+8i like the left one.
- KloroFormd, on 04/11/2008, -3/+5You like his left testicle?
- NathanMahdavi, on 04/11/2008, -0/+2more so then the right
- KloroFormd, on 04/11/2008, -3/+5You like his left testicle?
- ThomasPalmer, on 04/11/2008, -3/+28I would give both, and then just adopt a kid instead!
- daborg, on 04/11/2008, -0/+1Best comment on this article.
- ilikemonkeys1, on 04/11/2008, -4/+26I would give the entire package. If your a programmer chances are you won't get any anyways.
- wolferz, on 04/11/2008, -2/+5making a 6 figure salary more then makes up for lack of social graces with most women.
- ilikemonkeys1, on 04/11/2008, -1/+4Lol, yeah. But then you have nothing to show for the money.
- schmimd04, on 04/11/2008, -0/+1speak for yourself!

- madwh, on 04/11/2008, -1/+5I would buy microsoft to work there.
- publiclurker, on 04/11/2008, -1/+2We have a Winner!
- postitnote, on 04/11/2008, -1/+47I would give them a resume to work there!
- binarybyron, on 04/11/2008, -0/+5why not just go from an interview and keep your nuts?
- salvadorwii, on 04/11/2008, -1/+6i would pay them to work there
- aspade, on 04/11/2008, -0/+3Wow, there really are some weird people out there.. especially on digg.
- kilgoretrout88, on 04/11/2008, -0/+6I'd give both your testicles to work there.
- LadyDub, on 04/11/2008, -0/+6I would still date you with one testicle if you worked there.
- krofh, on 04/11/2008, -9/+41I'd give your mom my left testicle to work there.
- rallie, on 04/11/2008, -3/+14Another great success story
- Johntp, on 04/11/2008, -3/+1Yeah. I watched something about them online. They started out of basically a trailer and now they are some of the richest men in the world.
- expert01, on 04/11/2008, -0/+4*garage
- Johntp, on 04/11/2008, -3/+1Yeah. I watched something about them online. They started out of basically a trailer and now they are some of the richest men in the world.
- canewediggit, on 04/11/2008, -5/+99not buying these numbers. i know 2 people at google (one in nyc, one at the googleplex itself) and both have told me their salaries aren't really that good. but between the perks and stock options, the total comp is outstanding.
- ygarrard, on 04/11/2008, -14/+2Well I know 5.
- teekay87, on 04/11/2008, -1/+4thats amazing... good for you.
- tmyprod, on 04/11/2008, -5/+123well I have 3 PS3s
- celkin, on 04/11/2008, -2/+5Let's review with this chart...
- pw378, on 04/11/2008, -5/+43 PS3s? Thats a heck of a thing to spend an entire annual Google salary on. :)
- Kakemonster, on 04/11/2008, -1/+1OH SNAP!
- endlessoul, on 04/11/2008, -0/+2Well I have four popped collars.
- Yarnage, on 04/11/2008, -1/+1I have 4 PS3
- daborg, on 04/11/2008, -1/+1I have 3 PS4s.
- Seanseritz, on 04/11/2008, -1/+43Yeah I interviewed there and my brother got an offer there as a Software Engineer for $84,000 a year and they wouldn't negotiate for any more. As a result he chose to work at Mozilla which paid significantly more for a starting position $92,000 + 30-40% bonus per year. Google has so many accommodations in terms of food and other services that general starting salaries tend to be slightly lower in comparison in my experience.
- Skootles, on 04/11/2008, -5/+29You mean in your brother's experience..
- Daniel591992, on 04/11/2008, -7/+4I bet you he works there but can't admit it
- jwk4heels, on 04/11/2008, -1/+5He said he interviewed there as well as his brother, so it's his experience, too.
- judolphin, on 04/11/2008, -0/+13Your brother was wise to take $8,000 to work at Google. Remember this, college students: when you get a real job, all perks, except for medical insurance and paid time off, are basically useless. Any other perk should never be a deciding factor unless everything else is equal.
Bonuses are never guaranteed. Raises are never guaranteed. Dental/vision plans have negative expected value. Gym memberships and free cafeterias? They're better than a kick in the nuts, but I beg you to keep it in perspective. The "perks" are a red herring to convince people to work for less. For example, if you work 250 days a year, and average $10 a day on lunch, that's $2500. You can get your whole family a gym membership for around $1,000/year. Why would you turn down a good job elsewhere that pays more than $3500/year more?- zrthstr, on 04/11/2008, -2/+1Have you seen those napping pods? How many jobs have you had that endorse napping by supplying FREE PODS?
Exactly.- pault107, on 04/11/2008, -0/+3You probably only get to use a napping pod after you've worked 16 hours straight.
- zydeco, on 04/11/2008, -0/+3You can take all the naps you want at ANY job, but the work isn't going to go away. It just makes your day longer.
- zydeco, on 04/11/2008, -0/+1Here was a something else I found from *****.com
"All the press surrounding the amazing perks at GOOG is *****. Seriously, you can't really take advantage of the free food, massages, etc. because it just looks bad (and no one who is taken seriously at the company actually has any free time)."
- zrthstr, on 04/11/2008, -2/+1Have you seen those napping pods? How many jobs have you had that endorse napping by supplying FREE PODS?
- Skootles, on 04/11/2008, -5/+29You mean in your brother's experience..
- thepatster, on 04/11/2008, -0/+5That makes more sense
- h4mx0r, on 04/11/2008, -0/+15well with all those perks, the luxuries that you'd normally get in life are sometimes provided by google itself. I wouldn't mind earning a little less if everything else was covered.
- exomni, on 04/11/2008, -0/+6That's because they don't want to make you feel inferior.
http://www.google.com/search?&q=define%3Alying - TypeEE, on 04/11/2008, -2/+6Everyone I know who work for someone claimed they are underpaid.
- zydeco, on 04/11/2008, -1/+10Here's a well-traveled article from someone who's interviewed an exoogler:
http://no2google.wordpress.com/2007/06/24/life-at- ...
"College kids tend to like it because it’s just like college – all of their basic needs are taken care of. In fact, even most of your personal-life can get tied up in Google benefits."
And, my personal favorite, a view from Fake Steve Jobs
http://fakesteve.blogspot.com/2008/04/google-putti ...
"And you know what? There is something really evil about taking thousands of the world's smartest young people and using them to sell online text ads more efficiently. Really. Think of all the really interesting and important things that this pool of brainpower could be addressing." - firebirdx01, on 04/11/2008, -0/+1i know a lot of doctors and lawyers who also say their salaries aren't very good- that must be true as well.
- daviangel, on 04/11/2008, -0/+2Yup I was just listening to the union electricians at a hospital construction site talking about how they were actually making more money than some of the physicans at the hospital, after student loans, malpractice insurance, etc was taken into account-LOL!
- spyrochaete, on 04/11/2008, -0/+1That's indicative of a sad trend in Canada and the US, actually. The same funds that are allocated for healthcare are paid to the private sector for construction and contracting. I bet that electrician has much better job security than the nurses in that hospital - they just laid off about 80 of them in Toronto for that very reason.
- daviangel, on 04/11/2008, -0/+2Yup I was just listening to the union electricians at a hospital construction site talking about how they were actually making more money than some of the physicans at the hospital, after student loans, malpractice insurance, etc was taken into account-LOL!
- empy, on 04/11/2008, -1/+1I worked as a summer intern for them. $1850 a week for 10 weeks. Didn't get the Mountain View office though...so the perks were...lacking much.

- mirunit, on 04/11/2008, -0/+2For some reason, I do not think this is fully accurate. ~20k/month starting? Little experience? Sounds like they rolled in stock and benefits into the compensation.

- inspecality, on 04/11/2008, -1/+5In one of my college speech classes a woman did a speech about "stay at home mommies". - BrainInAJar, on 04/11/2008, -1/+8That would be called a "union", and for some unknown reason, techies consider that a dirty word

- sgtpppr, on 04/11/2008, -0/+1American Unions were the greatest thing that ever happened to India. Labor Union:Corporation as Militia:Federal Government.
- cephelo, on 04/11/2008, -0/+1Because we are intelligent. We don't need unions. Most of us good techies enjoy our work first and foremost. I am more apt to take a lower salary if I know my job will be challenging and exciting. A salary to go with it is nice, too, of course, but money isn't a primary goal for everyone.
- dynacrylic, on 04/11/2008, -3/+2Don't take underpaid jobs? Are you crazy?
I'm not John Galt! I'm not going on strike!
I would rather be working an underpaid job that at leasts satisfied my intellect a little, than taking a mindless job from a bromide. Some day I'll be fortunate enough to have a job that satisfies my intellect and ambition 100%; until then, I'll keep bustling along doing what I'm doing... - 4d669, on 04/11/2008, -0/+5Apparently you don't understand how programmers from the Middle East are taking over the world since they charge half as much as us.
- Metasquares, on 04/11/2008, -0/+1To be fair, you have to be *really* good to work at Google. Most people probably can't make the cut. If you're going to hire the best developers in the world, you should do so at the best developer salaries in the world.

- solid12345, on 04/11/2008, -0/+1Yeah but we also get bigger houses and more land in America too, it evens out. The greatest vacation is a comfy place to rest after a day of work.

- goldfishey, on 04/11/2008, -0/+7that's pretty average really, Ive worked customer service jobs where I got five weeks annual leave (paid) as standard. (I'm from Aust, and the norm here is four weeks, (20days) a year, so the extra week was a bonus.) Whats the norm in the USA, that makes 25 days such a super duper extra?
- timster, on 04/11/2008, -0/+5The norm in the US is probably about 2 weeks (10 days).
I get 3 weeks (15 days) and I am happy with this.- goldfishey, on 04/11/2008, -1/+3wow, 2 weeks, that sucks! They make you guys work hard over there.

- samssf, on 04/11/2008, -0/+1Yeah, wow... now that I think about it, it would suck to only get 2 weeks off a year (low end, but not uncommon). I get about 25 - 27 paid days off a year, but then I've been with my company for 5 yrs.
- joyleaf, on 04/11/2008, -0/+2http://bash.org/?2999
- JRumph, on 04/11/2008, -0/+1Yeah, I got 20 vacation days per year day one out of undergrad. That was on top of ~9 or so regular holiday days off. I believe it goes up to 25 days after 5 years.
- dreesemonkey, on 04/11/2008, -0/+2I work for a non-profit local govt. agency and while the salary may be lacking, I have over 7 weeks of vacation this year (I carried over two from last year). It's like I'm almost working at google, right? Right? Guys?

- ArtificialAnus, on 04/11/2008, -2/+22FTA: "Competing firms have said that Google alone has raised the average programmers salary by 50% over the last few year"
Yay!- frmatc, on 04/11/2008, -0/+2Raising the average doesn't make me any more money directly, though. It just makes my salary below average. You would only see the benefits if you're in a company with a liberal or informal pay scale.
- cephelo, on 04/11/2008, -0/+1That isn't always a good indicator. If the initial salary goes up 50%, some smaller companies can only hire 1 programmer instead of 2. Now one graduate has an awesome salary while another ends up working at Best Buy.
- BrainInAJar, on 04/11/2008, -17/+23Am I the only one that questions the sustainability of Google's practices?
I mean, sure it's great that they pay a boatload and hand out money like candy at a parade, but don't they have to eventually... you know... generate profit to continue doing that?

- Myonosken, on 04/11/2008, -0/+1That's income, not profit.
- BlackDaniel, on 04/11/2008, -1/+11Does your moms house not have TV? Google has been profitable (In the BILLIONS) for years!
wow.. - goldfishey, on 04/11/2008, -1/+3IT jobs are usually not forever. You work at google, it gives you something nice and shiny to put on your resume, and if they downsize or go bust, you go and get a job somewhere else.
- thailand1972, on 04/11/2008, -0/+2Good point. Google's stock price has dropped 40% since November and although climbing very slowly now, it's not really going to get anywhere near those November levels again. Also Google's income is 99% from advertising. Google Ad blindness would severely impact Google, and already the last few months have shown Google's growth plateauing. It's actually not in anyone's interest to see Google continue its growth rate of the last 10 years - another 10 years of that, and Welcome to The Machine.
- protodon, on 04/11/2008, -1/+40Unfortunately, I'm not qualified in anything Google hires for.
- Olfster, on 04/11/2008, -2/+1Neither most of us here in the US. What do you think H1B visas are for? Not to lower salaries, at least not at Google, MS maybe, but not Google.

- stox, on 04/11/2008, -0/+10On-site doctor saved my butt once. Back in the good old days, when Bell Labs used to have a full medical staff on-site, I wasn't feeling well and told my boss I was going home. He said I really looked pretty bad, and suggested that I see the site doctor instead. A half hour later, I was on my way off the site, in an Ambulance. Turns out that I had a monster kidney stone, and it had cut through the ureter. I was hemmoraging internally. I didn't get out of the hospital for a week.

- Biznaka, on 04/11/2008, -1/+32I know a lot of people that work there. Yes, there are several people that get paid the big bucks, but in what organization is there not? The people that are listed are easily the top programmers in the country (which is why they are getting paid an enormous amount). On the contrary though, a lot of people start off around 60k, specifically because they (google) don't want people to work for them who are just looking for money. Google loves people who want to work there for creativity, innovation and collaboration.
Anyway, if you love Google enough, put in an application! They are hiring at the moment, make sure it looks and feels nice! Because you are not going to be the only one when it goes through the resume screening!

"With nearly more than 1000 clients and customer retention of more than 95%, you are assured of our reliability and customer satisfaction. Below are certain facts as to why our clients choose
Online Rack:"
I have nearly more than a 6-pack in the fridge... well only 2 beers but nearly! - krofh, on 04/11/2008, -0/+3Ugh, I think we've got it back up. Had to move the entire ***** site to another server.
- BlackDaniel, on 04/11/2008, -0/+4Now why would you host your site at a company that describes their customer base this way:
- BlackDaniel, on 04/11/2008, -10/+157Or you can just be talented and work at home!
Perks include:
Whenever jerkoffs
Hot food delivered by yourself
Cute neighbor jail bait
Smoking area wherever the ***** you want
Breaks whenever you want
Lenient Drunk-at-work policy
"Doobie hour"
Half life 2 anytime
Google ain't that fly!- haikuFU, on 04/11/2008, -0/+4Haha, you just described my workday. A stripper moved into the house across the street, so she's not jailbait, but close enough.
- Zipko, on 04/11/2008, -2/+1Notice that nowhere in that list does it mention getting paid. You've basically just described the job of being a college student who doesn't plan on graduating.
- BlackDaniel, on 04/11/2008, -2/+7I make somewhere between $75-90k a year....
- aaronjason8992, on 04/11/2008, -2/+2no you dont
- Ortheos, on 04/11/2008, -0/+1Yes he does. I paid him.
- booshack, on 04/11/2008, -0/+1My boss is in this truck right now.
- aaronjason8992, on 04/11/2008, -2/+2no you dont
- SeasonedBeef, on 04/11/2008, -0/+0You win. I'm turning my spare bedroom into a home office now.
- kertong, on 04/11/2008, -0/+1I would take work at home over Google for the doobie hour alone. :D
- tcardone05, on 04/11/2008, -3/+4You mean i can afford to have a car AND drive it too?
- newznozzl, on 04/11/2008, -4/+13(from the now dead link):
Google Programmer in Phoenix - $174,000/year
Google Programmer in California - $197,000/year
Google Programmer in Chicago - $222,000/year
Google Programmer in New York - $242,000/year- haikuFU, on 04/11/2008, -3/+2This is *****. My good friend works for google as a lead programmer on one of their properties, and this is WAY high unless you take into account the yearly stock options (which are obviously going to fluctuate in value).
- newznozzl, on 04/11/2008, -0/+1NOTE on the above: I also think it does sound a bit high, and very well could take into bonus and the like.
I would also imagine this is not for starting developers - I would guess this would be the high range, for people with PhD's + large amounts of experience.... - orlyfactor, on 04/11/2008, -0/+5I call ***** on this article.
- RyeBrye, on 04/11/2008, -0/+6Yeah, those numbers are *****.
- streetstealth, on 04/11/2008, -0/+1How does the Chicago programmer make more than the California programmer?
Chicago ain't cheap but it's still a bargain compared to the bay area.
I mean I guess he could just be... more skilled or have worked there longer, but still...
- ekravchenko, on 04/11/2008, -0/+17It can't be correct. Starting developers/programmers at google do not earn over $80,000, which is still a lot of money!
- Eptiger, on 04/11/2008, -1/+11Yeah, this is NOT correct. I still don't understand where these numbers come from at indeed.com (I only did a quick search, haven't used it much), but I know someone who took a job there just last year and it was definitely NOT six figures for a software engineers. The stock options were weak. There are people lying on this thread and inflating the numbers.
Besides, if you take a job solely for money then that's a hollow victory. Google's environment is cool, no doubt, but I don't think being an engineer there is for everyone. Plenty of tech companies ofter great benefits at the workplace and in other ways.

- DDMX, on 04/11/2008, -0/+4Some info on a forum I found.....
http://www.indeed.com/forum/cmp/Google/05390c183c1 ... - xeenat, on 04/11/2008, -1/+1None of the links are working.
- treyd1, on 04/11/2008, -1/+1Wow, this is certainly more than I expected, what with all of the free services they offer. Even though some of them clearly entice employees to work more (free breakfast early and dinner late, on-site doctor, etc.), I would be glad to have any of them.
- Celeron, on 04/11/2008, -7/+2I'm so thankful for living in the Silicon Valley and majoring in Computer Engineering. Doubt I will have a chance working at Google, but there's dozens of great companies I have a chance at like Cisco.
- stupidStan, on 04/11/2008, -1/+7yay for your life story... wait, no one cares
- xsquirrel378x, on 04/11/2008, -0/+2cisco doesnt want you. they think you suck. youre going to work at best buy
- Epik, on 04/11/2008, -2/+3There's conflicting info on employment by Google.
You've got magazines saying BEST COMPANY TO WORK FOR but then some employees and former employees who say it's awful and highly overrated. - JedicodeWarrior, on 04/11/2008, -1/+9Two words: golden handcuffs.
- goeric, on 04/11/2008, -1/+4What are the non-programmer salaries?
- suckmykiss4819, on 04/11/2008, -0/+11ill bet they dont get much done (look at their website !!!!)
- digjam, on 04/11/2008, -1/+6yeah all they get paid for is the change the ***** logo...?? even i can do that in my spare time..
- tikidrummer928, on 04/11/2008, -7/+1*****
- tdadlani, on 04/11/2008, -11/+1I think its a great company. I think the stock will also go back to $700.
Too many smart people working there and creating the next hit product.
www.thecreatingwealthblog.com - DDMX, on 04/11/2008, -2/+53Complete article:
Google has been known for a long time as the best place in the world to work. They offer free massages, gourmet meals, and professional haircuts at their beautiful campus in California. That right there puts them above 99.99% of the other companies in the world. At any rate, you already knew all that so lets move on.
Have you ever wondered how much a Google employee makes? Well this data isn't extremely easy to find, if you don't believe me just search Google. However, here is some interesting statistics.
Google Programmer in Phoenix - $174,000/year
Google Programmer in California - $197,000/year
Google Programmer in Chicago - $222,000/year
Google Programmer in New York - $242,000/year
(according to Indeed.com)
...and thats just in salary. What other financial benefits does Google offer it's employees?
* 1) Google will pay $8,000 / year for you to continue your education. They just require you get at least 'B's in your classes.
* 2) If you refer another employee to Google's staff and they stay for 60 days, Google will pay your $2,000
* 3) If you are thinking about adopting a kid, Google will contribute $5,000 towards all the legal and adoption fees.
* 4) Depending how long you have worked at Google you can get up to 25 days (almost a month) paid vacation a year!
Now their is one more thing that is very interesting about Google employees financial lives. According to the New York Times there are estimated to be over 1,000 Google employees with Google stock worth over $5 million dollars. Woah wait! There are over 1,000 people working for Google who are worth OVER $5 MILLION DOLLARS! Even Google's former masseuse (did I mention employees get free massages) is a millionaire. Also, according to the New York Times, every employee that has been at Google for over a year is worth well over $250,000. Competing firms have said that Google alone has raised the average programmers salary by 50% over the last few year and with salaries and benefits like this I really don't doubt it.- jackgalt, on 04/11/2008, -1/+1Was that when the stock was up to $715, or after it sunk back to its current price of $470? Anyone who started in 2007 or after now has a bunch of stock options that are pretty much worthless
- jinjin, on 04/11/2008, -1/+2Worthless huh? Do you even know how stock options work?
- RyeBrye, on 04/11/2008, -0/+2Well... If their strike price was $715, and the stock is currently at $470 - then I would say that their stock options are clearly WORTHLESS at the moment. I suppose they could PAY money to exercise them, if they wanted to get rid of money for some reason - but that would be stupid. (I'm sure someone, somewhere, has been dumb enough to try doing that)
do YOU know how stock options work? - jackgalt, on 04/20/2008, -0/+1Of course I know how stock options work. I studied business and now work in finance. Apparently you have no idea what you're talking about. Read RyeBrye's explanation

- BlackDaniel, on 04/11/2008, -0/+1I don't get it.. Whats the news here?
The EXACT same thing happened to Novell, GM, Microsoft etc. etc. and pretty much EVERY single 'really successful' company w stock options in history.. - guitarplayax, on 04/11/2008, -0/+1That really is nothing special...I get all the same benefits and my company pays in full for continued education.
