The Future of RSS

readwriteweb.com — Because of RSS ubiquity it is now a very attractive delivery medium for all kinds of content. However because the basic format is simple and primitive, there is no way to encode semantics without building an extension. So in this post, we look at RSS today and ask if RSS is evolving into a tool for delivering complex, semantically rich information.

    Wow, it feels like it's six months or so ago.
  • fkr3, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5RSS is just a common format for XML, for people who want a solution for delivering a common format of information - title, description, url, author and date. XML itself is flexible and can be used to deliver information using whatever structure you want.

    The future of RSS is to remain the way it is now. Other new common formats of XML will be created to handle other common requirements, and some will be an expansion of the RSS format and even bear it's name (versions 0.90 / 1.0 / 0.91 / 0.92 / 2.0) but they have their own specifications.

Keep it simple, that's why I use RSS. ***** it up with this "complex, semantically rich information" (aka AOL'ing it up) is a sure fire way to insure people who love it for its simplicity to stop using it, and create something else.

    Evolving? We've had a way to deliver complex, semantically rich information for a while now, it's called RDF.

    Combine RDF with things like OWL and Dublin Core and you've got yourself quite a platform for delivering semantically rich information...
