- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3i would have killed someone and hid them inside....
- vonskippy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2So that's where I left my library card.
- navinjohnson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Im going on a limb here but I'll bet you a million bucks it will be opened within 6,000 years. Any takers??
- J_Omega, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@ seventoes : don't read much, huh?
TFA: "The target year for the crypt's future opening– 8113 A.D.– was arrived at by considering 1936 to be the halfway point to the future. 6,177 years had passed since the Egyptian calendar had been established in 4241 B.C., so Dr. Jacobs projected forward the same number of years from the date of his idea's birth." - QuorumCall, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2This story is at least 65 years old... Come on!!!
- rdhdthoughts, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That is pretty far into the future. When we think about how far we;ve come in 50 or 60 years since then, who knows what will be that far ahead, or if we will be?
- sulestis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1that is certainly....optimistic...
good for them - nlatimer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Plundered after apocolypse was my first thought too.
- timwizard, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1There won't be anyone left to open it by then.
- Amplix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1We'll blow ourselves up before that amount of time elapses, that or a big rock will crash into us, or we'll crash into us. I don't know how but we will. I mean, its the future we're talking about right?
- neoform, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Why not just throw all those items in the trash?
No one's gonna be alive here in 6000 years nor will the contents of that vault still be in tact, it's almost guarranteed that someone will plunder it before then. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1mad max...
- InvisionUK, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Amongst the things included in the vault are:
"1 set graduates (sealed)"
I feel really sorry for them! I hope they have enough food in there to last six thousand years. - chrisc2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1WE GET IT. THE WORLD WILL BE LONG OVER IN 6,000 YEARS. JESUS CHRIST.
Every damn comment in here is the same thing. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i bet they cracked it open secret and put jimmy hoffa in there
- JorgeGT, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1" Oglethorp University reprersentants... " you kidding, don't you? planet will be under the control of Machines and humans survivors will learn through neuronal stimulation "I know Kung-Fu !"
btw... no LINUX DISTROS in that cryp! mwahahahahaha!!
The first one saying " wont be necessay since linux will survive" is a imaginationless fanboy deserving to be preserved in carbonyte in that crypt, as advice foor future generations ;-) :P - dvgraphics, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This isn't THAT unique. At the 1939 Worlds' Fair in New York, Westinghouse put a Time Capsule in the ground to be opened in 6939 AD (5000 years). Of course, that was in Flushing, NY, which we all know gets destroyed by radiation in 2134. So whatever.
- MrDolomite, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1very cool, good article, definitely digg material, because it is basically useless, but interesting :)
- thedonger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1They should include DNA too
- HunterKiller, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I would be inclined to go with Asimov's Theory that the Earth will be uninhabitable by then, we will have colonized other planets, and we will eventually forget where Earth is.
- TheKillDoctor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Great idea, but the contents they picked are definitely yard sale material for the future. Inluding a Masonic deposit of (5 badges, I metal plaque in case, sealed). The grapefruit peeler will definitely tell the future something, but what I have no idea.
- iconshotspot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Stop stressing. It's there. Me and the Doctor checked its there. The only thing is there is a StarBucks built up over it. Business is so successful no one cared to check it. The winning Interegalactic Powerball numbers for the 12th of Zebulac 3021 are Pi Na Cu Al Fe powerball is 1. Civilization doesnt end till Two Days Before the Day After Tomorrow for all the doomsayers.
- xelloss, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Like the world is going to be around for 6107 years >.>
- erkokite, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I read about this in one of the Sky Magazines in the back of the seats on an airplane.

"Hah! in 1939 i think the sum total of human knowledge did fit in a drug store."
Hey Lunchbox, you know what? I think the total sum of Human Knowledge of 2006 can fit into a Laptop. - ultimate_ed, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Man, I had no idea that DIGG was inhabited by such a sad collection of pessimitic MF's. What are you kids being taught in school these days?
- cyssero, on 04/18/2009, -0/+0Someone needs to make a 2006 edition and include a copy of Wikipedia.
- ArthurSucks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0In the future time capsules will go BACKWARDS in time!
- Xtrem3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm sure I'm not contributing to the human knowledge with this question, but how would you go about calculating the global intellect of humans?
- cdreiling, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I say crack it open and have a yard sale.
- gaius_baltar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It's not going to make it that long.
- gsteff, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The hilarious part is that they ask that representatives of Oglethorp University participate in the opening ceremony.
- WaterDragon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"..the contents of this vault will remain unseen and undisturbed for the next 6,107 years"..
...And just who or what is going to keep it unseen for 6,107 years? Pretty stupid idea!
I am sure that some *****, after only 2,000 years, will insist on opening it, and it will spoil the secret for future generations.
Too bad they closed the thing before there was an internet. They should open it now, since it is already ANCIENT! - Reddog_x2000, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0right. Like anyone is going to remember to open it.
- Jonny5alive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Why would people bother opening it if we already have a record of what is inside?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm sorry, but that's just asking for a burglary. Oh so tempting...
- theundone, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I've gotta say, more than likely, the world will NOT be here in 6,000 years. Seems like a silly idea to me, 6,000 years......
- tnsimonson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I am amazed at how many posters think that humanity/civilization will have disappeared before this vault is opened. So much for optimism . . .
- DurangoSteve, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Big Digg... very cool... I think they have a chance..
- Universum, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It's absurdly optimistic =) it wont stand that long.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hell, I'll be hoest I doubt we'll eb around either, it's redidiuidiudgyuldchg mjrfgnhf
Rediculous to think thta humanity ill survive that long.
look at current trends, it's obvious we're all doomed. - BSpolice, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0TFA:"His "crypt" was to contain a comprehensive record of civilization up to that time, as well as the accumulated knowledge of mankind."
This doesn't jive with the listed inventory. Who's the fool that interpreted "the accumulated knowledge of mankind" to mean, "the entire contents of a drug store"? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0that place is like 10min from my crib
- Frinkahedron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0That's where Elvis lives.
- bcdowell, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If anything, I'd say the likelihood of the survival of humanity for another 6000 years is pretty strong... the only thing that would be a sure killer is the literal destruction of earth, and we may even be able to get around that obstacle in a handful of centuries or perhaps less. We'd just have to find (or make?) another suitable planet elsewhere.
either that or we'll just evolve. :-P And even then, our history will probably be just as interesting, if not moreso, for our evolutionary successors.

just my 2c - FuManchu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Well, as far as whether or not the following will be around in 6107 year, I'd say it's unlikelier as the list goes down:
Earth
Georgia [the physical location, not the political State]
Any Human inhabitants of that area
People [not necessarily human beings] who give a ***** about digging up old crap [Archaeologists]
People who, if they did accidentally find it, would take the trouble to break into a stainless steel vault that was welded shut.
People who can understand English language or even read Roman letters. The details of the Universal Translator machine, supposedly entombed in there, were pretty sketchy.
People who will know what microfilm is, and try to devise a means of magnifying it
On the other hand, it was a great little science project putting it all together. Fun, too, I'll bet.
I also bet someone could get a good Master's Thesis out of analyzing the contents & construction of the time capsule, and commenting on the cultural assumptions and values of the project's directors and the state of the society at that time. - emperortomato, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Stainless steel i dunno. Everything in there should be made out of plastic, styrofoam and rock if they want it to last. It probably won't be humans opening it, because there is almost no hope of us lasting that long. But if it's made out of some long-lasting *****, and it's hardcore enough to survive a nuclear holocaust then it'll provide some interesting material for whatever comes next. If some new form of life is able to develop before the sun dies and destroys the earth.
- mikeyeah, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Did they throw any porn in there?
- imjustabill, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm sure when people find this in 4 thousand years, they'll decide not to open it for another 2,107 years.
- LunchB0x, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"This doesn't jive with the listed inventory. Who's the fool that interpreted "the accumulated knowledge of mankind" to mean, "the entire contents of a drug store"?"
Hah! in 1939 i think the sum total of human knowledge did fit in a drug store. -
