- davatron5000, on 10/12/2007, -2/+40Yahoo didn't evolve. It was intelligently designed. Buried as inaccurate.
- bffoley, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13Loaded with hot features? The only Yahoo product I still use is Yahoo Mail, and that's only because Ive been using it for 10 years and most friends/family know my address there as my primary.
I switched to Google for my web search needs a long time ago and never cared about all the other garbage they try to pitch. - stealthboy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11I stopped using Yahoo when they left the simple directory listing model. I found the hierarchical directory infinitely more useful than a search feature buried in a "portal" page.
- robdazomba, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12Evolution of Yahoo!
Cool -> Cooler -> Awesome -> Not-so-awesome -> Okay -> Ho-hum -> Bigger -> Bigger -> Bigger -> Bigger -> Bigger -> Awful -> Vile -> Evil - drjekelmrhyde, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9I dont understand why diggers hate Yahoo so much this web company been around 10 YEARS while others failed you have to give Yahoo credit for that
- criess, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Yahoo has an incredible social network. That is why http://answers.yahoo.com and http://fantasysports.yahoo.com have been huge successes.
But Yahoo doesn't get much media love that is for sure. I was listening to a podcast where they reported that Google Answers is shutting down but they never mentioned how huge a success Yahoo Answers is.
This is a clear place where Yahoo kicked Google's ass but nobody will mention it. - sheepster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7@laurence
what are you talking about? - TimDigg, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7yahoo pipes...
- tackle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I'm what you might consider a Y! fanboi. Well, the reason I'm one is because several of their services are far superior to their equivalent but still somehow they dont get the credit they deserve.
Here are the services I use almost everyday:
1. Y! Mail - the new AJAX interface is far superior to any other web mail interfaces.
2. Y! Messenger - lot of features, nicely integrated with other Y! services (the photo gallery thing is so well done..)
3. Y! Movies - the only competitor to imdb.com. The new upgrade to the design is great.
4. Y! Sports - a clear competitor to other big sports company websites such as espn/nba.
5. Y! Radio - Their recommendation engine is simply great.. I've been a premium member for atleast 3 years. Never looked back since then.
6. Y! Answers - Great community. Can find answers to anything.
7. Y! Maps beta/Y! Local - Great combination. I think it is the first (if not one of the first) maps website with the option to store several addresses so that you dont have to type them everytime. Probably by this time, other mapping websites have copied that feature.
8. Y! Toolbar (beta for IE7)- I've always felt it is one of the best applications that Y! has to offer. Easy access to all their services. Nicely integrated bookmarks feature.
not to mention... Flickr, Y! My Web, Y! News, Y! TV..
Great services overall... Thank you Yahoo! - digitome, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Interesting trip down memory lane, Yahoo sure has come along way over the years huh
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Totally agree. When it was just a well organized and maintained topical directory, it was usually more useful than Google. Then it became a bad clone of AOL, overloaded with page junk and rip off ads. Yahoo's design is only slightly better than Myspace at this point, and it looks to be going nowhere. Someone will buy it up and maintain it for the same reason they maintain AOL - as training wheels for older inflexible users.
- drjekelmrhyde, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Yahoo answers is cool peole ask some of the most crazy questions
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5"new site loaded with hot features" vs. "a couple of news headlines buried within a dizzying mess of ads, celebrity gossip, and useless web2.0 eyecandy"
eye of the beholder, of course... - geronimo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5One cool but lesser known thing they have is Yahoo! stores. You can create your website with a GUI, give it products and it creates a website for you, handling order processing. Otherwise I'm not fond of their other feature - turning in Chinese dissidents to the Chinese government.
- SirBotchness, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4geocities, yahoo messenger, yahoo mail, yahoo music, yahoo pipes,
Sure they're stuff isn't as cool as it used to be back in the day, but for them to develop those things and NOT be an ISP is pretty substantial. Most of those things came before they were partnered with AT&T. - lithman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Y! answers is awesome.
- Raian, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5I also am confused over the 'hot' features... more like confusing, bloated, disconnected acquisitions-- sucked of any remaining innovation, left to languish.
- argoff, on 10/12/2007, -5/+8Yahoo has blown it several times. First they tried to become a content company when the Internet was asking for a search company - that arrogance allowed google to drive in 20 freight trains right under their nose. Second, they tried to appease China while telling their base in the US 'FU' - well once people in China started getting put in jail for exercising free speech (yahoo id them for the govt), the US base said FU harder right back at them.
- felyduw, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3they bought geocities when it was starting to suck... not really a true innovation but more like an angel who came from heaven and gave the geocities founders alotta money
- MisterNipples, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Anyone else remember when the Yahoo URL went to Stanford?
- gajillion, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4This is what passes for news these days? Someone discovers the Internet Archive and it's worth commenting about? Good lord, what's next? "Slashdot ID numbers have been steadily incrementing over the years! Film at 11:00."
- ktulu1115, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6I'd have to comment that I think Yahoo Mail (the beta AJAX) is actually quite a good product. I prefer it over GMail's interface, find it much easier to use. Their search sucks though, Google rules in that category.
- endgame, on 10/12/2007, -5/+8I think Yahoo's NEW E-mail is FAR superior to Gmail. Just my opinion thats all.
- tdp05, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4That "hot features" line made me think that this was some sort of yahoo marketing thing. A fan, even a fanboi wouldn't say that.
My parents love Yahoo for some reason. They use it as their homepage, I think they like the news on the frontpage, easily accessible. Plus, watching them look for a website is great. Mom will type in www.foodtv.com in the Yahoo search box then choose the first link, instead of just typing it in. Dad will open 10 firefox windows because he can't deal with using tabs, so that he can look at a bunch of yahoo news stories.
I haven't touched my yahoo email accounts in years, only use them for the login for March madness pools and flickr. I will say that I am starting to like Yahoo Maps. The last two times I needed to map something, Google Maps gave me an assbackwards way to go, but Yahoo got it right. - LaurenceHerbert, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5@sheepster
If you look at the 1997 version and view the source code you will notice that the code is all clumped together and there are no spaces, hence my comment
"In 1997 did they forget something we scientists call, a spacebar."
I should have used the [sarcasm] tags =)
Actually my comment was pretty stupid anyway, for some reason I have linked it to the wrong place (1996 version). The link should have been to here:
http://web.archive.org/web/19970109130853/http://www9.yahoo.com/
Bah ! - SirBotchness, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Wow those are some lame looking websites, but thats what the net was like back then. I remember using metacrawler a lot rather than yahoo or google.
- MrSketch, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3After I setup a my.yahoo.com page around 1998, I haven't even been back to the front page. It sure has changed a lot since I last saw it, and I still think of it as the basic directory front page. Now that google has a customized homepage, I find I'm not even using the my.yahoo.com page as much.
- SirStu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Anyone know of a mirror? I'm being presented with a blank page.
- sheepster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2i don't know whats actually on this page since its down already, but i did find this:
http://weblogs.media.mit.edu/SIMPLICITY/archives/000263.html
small pictures though :/ - spect3r, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2http://web.archive.org/web/*/yahoo.com
(better picture of the evolution) - titans2k2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2yeah me too metacrawler and hotbot were the 2 big ones i used way back then
- trollick, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3With their last version most of yahoo became completely unusable.
- GiGiinGA, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It has been fun to see them make their own way back. I enjoy yahoo answers. Your right about no media love. Everyone is up Google's a$$.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I like the 2005/6 layout.
- duniyadnd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Their front page is a ripoff of digg?

Yahoo is number 1 sir - aestetix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I did this a few months ago...
http://mw2600.org/yahoo/ - SavageGeek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"I stopped using Yahoo when they left the simple directory listing model."
Ditto. I loved being able to browse sites by topic... and they had pretty much every topic covered and lots of sites even in the more obscure categories. - lithman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Sorry, my server couldn't handle the load. It's back up now.
- kaykfrink, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Damn, I wish I had thought of writing an article that is nothing more than links to the WayBack Machine with a small summary of what the page looks like. What is the point of this? And why does it feel like it was written as a tenth grade book report?
- titans2k2, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I would say launch is what i use most on yahoo :)
- duniyadnd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1is that a.m. or p.m.? EST?
- 70ny, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Everything on digg can be found on Google or Yahoo. I don't understand the your point.
- Rulex, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0No matter how old yahoo is, it has always sucked and it still SUCKS! i think that the only thing working for them is the games section...
- monergism, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3Yawn. Old news is useless.
- gesturemaker, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0Wow! I've always liked posts like that. Dugg.
- MotionAesthetic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0And a decade later I discover that my ***** yoyo website was only in the yahoo.co.uk directory.
http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/LongmanElder/
My first website, lost forever. - MotionAesthetic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Woah, go to just http://ourworld.compuserve.com/.
Sometimes you don't need no wayback machine. - ShyGuy91284, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Anyone have any idea where the magazine fits in? I recall back in 97 I knew them more by their magazine then their website. Although that may have been just me.
