- fandyllic, on 02/14/2009, -2/+133Web 2.0 never really meant anything. It's pure marketing speak.
- petard, on 02/14/2009, -2/+48"Web 2.0" was always an annoying term. It didn't mean anything. The internet worked just the same as always.
- Farmer77, on 02/14/2009, -2/+35That term is as dumb as "surfing the internet".
- Kabloink, on 02/14/2009, -7/+34I wish the term "cloud computing" could die along with Web 2.0.
- AmyVernon, on 02/14/2009, -2/+28Before I read it, I was like, wtf? But I completely agree, it would be fabulous if the phrase were never uttered by anyone ever again.
- krystofr, on 02/14/2009, -4/+24Great news! I was so sick of repeatedly being reminded of my high school grade point average
- Loornadune, on 02/14/2009, -3/+22This article is /so/ Web 2.0
- KayinNasaki, on 02/14/2009, -1/+15Oooh! Oooh! Can we also kill off "Killer app" while we're at it?
- waydee, on 02/14/2009, -1/+14Call it what you want, all it ever meant was giving your website a silly name (remove a vowel!), bevelled edges and filling it full of bloated javascript.
- philodygmn, on 02/14/2009, -1/+13What I hate about version numbers is they lend credence to the idea that the Internet should be a product, rather than infrastructure. We don't say "highway 3.0" yet recogrize its general utility in referring to it as an info highway :-P
- leesw, on 02/14/2009, -1/+12I always thought Web 2.0 was a cheesy expression people used to try to sound like they knew what they were talking about. It sounds like something that Michael Scott would say on the office and want everyone to see how cutting edge he was for saying it. CHEESY!
- HiImFromReddit, on 02/14/2009, -3/+14Hopefully we can get rid of "cloud computing" too.
- KimNovak, on 02/14/2009, -0/+10Web 5.0 Profit
- Seidoger, on 02/14/2009, -0/+9Totally, I agree. But you could still identify sites as being such based on distinct criteria: Brilliant simple UI and user experience, web services, all running on lightweight scalable systems.. That was before. And then it got used to describe any site that had a white background, AJAX, huge fonts, reflections and a user-base you can interact with.
- LucasVB, on 02/14/2009, -1/+10Now it's time for people to stop calling everything a "solution".
- rd1010, on 02/14/2009, -3/+12cloud computing is a useful term and I think it has specific meaning.. I don't know why you would compare it to web 2.0. Amazon Ec2 basically invented the term cloud computing so it has a specific origin that can be traced, its not like the over-generalized web 2.0.
- anagoge, on 02/14/2009, -2/+10I think, you have misplaced a comma.
- one1plus1one, on 02/14/2009, -0/+7It's always just been "The Internet" to me.
- AmyVernon, on 02/14/2009, -0/+7That's the point of the article.
- hazello, on 02/14/2009, -1/+7No doubt, these people might also have Ruby on Rails blow up dolls, Steve Jobs portraits on their walls and um.. accounts on Digg
- nextekcarl, on 02/14/2009, -0/+6Exactly. My friend had a boss tell him they should have a web 2.0 website while handing him a magazine article like it was something new (this was just a few months ago). He said, "You mean like the site I put up two years ago that I took down because NO ONE besides me was using it, and I got sick of training people on and maintaining?" as he looked through the article.
- cran, on 02/14/2009, -0/+5What does it mean?
- Mueritz, on 02/14/2009, -4/+9I think, the end isn´t cooming soon.
- pingveno, on 02/14/2009, -0/+5Highway 0.1: Path where a few people walk so much on it that it's not as difficult to get travel on.
Highway 1.0: Path where some people made sure the bushes were all out of the way
Highway 1.1: Paths wide enough to pass other people
Highway 2.0: Wide enough to pass vehicles, some gravel or similar material
Highway 3.0: Bridges
Highway 4.0: Pavement, traffic cops, stop signs
Highway 5.0 Lines, automated traffic lights
Highway 6.0 Expressways, overpasses
Highway 7.0 Freeways - insanebrain, on 02/14/2009, -0/+5I wish I could Digg you up more.
- fuzzymcsnorkle, on 02/14/2009, -0/+4...and you wouldn't surf on an information superhighway. Or a web for that matter. Surfing doesn't mix with any of those metaphors. No one can ever use the term surfing again. Don't do it!
- dhudson0001, on 02/15/2009, -0/+4Web 4.0:
All your Static and Dynamic base are belong to us. - defyant, on 02/14/2009, -0/+4i am really annoyed by the whole "killer app" term...i work with IPv6, and that's all i read...where's the killer app...get a life - the next gen internet is the killer app....wake up
- rd1010, on 02/14/2009, -2/+6Oh come on are you serious? There are plenty of start-ups that had been called "web 2.0", Digg itself has been called web 2.0 so has Facebook which is valued at $3.7 billion.. you have no idea what you are talking about
- stack3r, on 02/14/2009, -0/+4HAHAHAHA
- chrillen, on 02/14/2009, -0/+4This is not the end, this is not even the begninning of the end, but perhaps it's the end of the beginning.
- jellygraph, on 02/15/2009, -0/+3web 2.0 was actually really only defined as a a web with user-generated content. ie. sites where user input and participation could lead to generated content. in a sense, turning the web into an extended hard drive of your life
web 1.0 sites were sites where content was published by the owners of the site (seems so dull, when i think back at it).
its not really technology specific (ie. static html versus script generating dynamic content). It just so happens that certain technologies became the popular way to achieve web 2.0. a lot has been made out of the web 2.0 catch-phrase, but that's all marketing speak. ultimately, a lot of people try to argue what web 2.0 really means, but i think this really encapsulates the entire spirit of its evolution. - 5urr3al5am, on 02/14/2009, -1/+4reminds me of age of empires
- bbliss17, on 02/14/2009, -2/+5Who cares. The reason people are not searching for this anymore is because everyone knows what it is. It was a new term and that is why people were searching for it.
- leesw, on 02/14/2009, -0/+3Ha!
- dsfjvhbd, on 02/14/2009, -0/+3Why?
It warns me of applications, that need internet for things that can also be done locally, so I do not waste my time.
Nice! - gopy, on 02/14/2009, -1/+4... and nothing of value was lost.
- krystalo, on 02/14/2009, -1/+4The Death of "TechCrunch"
- insanebrain, on 02/14/2009, -0/+3Go away.
- insanebrain, on 02/14/2009, -0/+3nope
- Kupe, on 02/14/2009, -0/+3I guess it was just a new application for the old term "Channel Surfing". It's dumb, but it stuck.
- RoboRay, on 02/15/2009, -0/+2It's just a series of tubes, man.
- sageerrant, on 02/16/2009, -0/+2Well, at least it sort of refers to something...
Which we've had for quite some time now. It's just getting better. Hurrah. - cdadabo, on 02/14/2009, -2/+4The beginning is the end is the beginning.
- theguynextdoor, on 02/15/2009, -1/+3the average user does not care about these sorts of comments.
- DirtyVicar, on 02/14/2009, -0/+2Web 4.0: Static content (old-school style becomes fashionable; the hipsters will usher in the new trend)
- dayal911, on 02/14/2009, -0/+2Most people can not properly define "cloud computing", just as they can't properly define "grid computing".
The reason for a differentiation between cloud and grid computing is largely because the government will only fund projects for a period of time. To keep funding, they created a separation and coined a new term. - inactive, on 02/14/2009, -2/+4Web 1.0: Static content
Web 2.0 Static bases with dynamic content.
Web 3.0 Dynamic bases with dynamic content.
Web 4.0 ??? - Link459, on 02/15/2009, -0/+2Good. I hated ***** that said Web 2.0.
- iAdore, on 02/15/2009, -0/+2Say what you want about Facebook, but it has a pretty neat interface :)
