- jaimequin, on 03/05/2009, -10/+51Hold up; Twitter is already part of facebook. Only in face book it's called "What are you doing right now?"
FB: Johny is hungry and feels like a burger.
TwItter: 12:30pm: I'm Hungry and feel like a burger.
See, same *****, both equally pathetic. - theberlindoctor, on 03/05/2009, -2/+36These are all just fads. Myspace? Friendster? Secondlife? Usually when the major media (newspeak) starts stalking about it then you know its about to go over the cliff and the next one is right around the corner.
- inactive, on 03/05/2009, -32/+51Twitter has explosive growth thanks to the army of 12-16 year olds and paid shills who blog about it. But it will never come close to Facebooks numbers.
Once people realize how dumb twitter really is (ie: public text messages), they'll stop falling in love with it. Come on, even Daily Show pokes fun at it. - Striss, on 03/05/2009, -0/+19Do these super submitter people ever do anything besides copy/paste on their story descriptions? They could at least fix them up a tiny bit, I don't think "Twitter By Sarah Lacy Every time" really flows well.
- Phocion55, on 03/05/2009, -13/+3112-16 year olds. Right.
I'm currently using Twitter to connect to people involved in similar areas of my grad school research.
The amount of thoughts, papers, slide decks, conference info/updates, etc. being shared is incredible.
Just because your ability to think outside the box beyond "public text message" doesn't mean other people (over the age of 16) can find novel uses for it.
Or, hell, maybe you're right and there are just some incredibly brilliant 12 year olds in academia. - winterorchid, on 03/05/2009, -2/+17one of my friends updates her facebook status through twitter. I'd call that a collision.
- jlm408, on 03/05/2009, -3/+17I signed up for a twitter, but I stopped using it when I realized that, in all likelihood, no one really gives a ***** about what I'm doing/thinking at random points during the day (just like I don't give a ***** about what my friends doing at any given time)
- vegx, on 03/05/2009, -2/+15Facebook and Twitter aren't mutually exclusive.
- ToastPop, on 04/17/2009, -3/+15Facebook isn't going anywhere anytime soon, trust me. Me and everyone I know is addicted to it like crack.
Twitter, on the other hand, is really only appealing to the geek/tech community. I know like two people in real life that actually use it, whereas everyone and their parents are on Facebook. - fireashes, on 03/05/2009, -2/+11I dont try to socially network in twitter. I follow news on twitter and get the breaking news on my cell phone. I love facebook and twitter for completely different reasons
- inactive, on 03/05/2009, -12/+21The Coming Facebook-Twitter Collision, i hope they both die in that collision...or at least be horribly maimed for life.
- FelixDrylock, on 03/05/2009, -3/+11I'm about getting tired of hearing about this twitter *****. How the hell do you take a small feature in facebook, give it a cute name, and turn it into a national media feeding frenzy?
I've been trying to watch Late Night with Fallon, even though I'm not a fan, I'll give him a chance - and he won't shut the ***** up about twitter. - Dumbledorito, on 03/05/2009, -2/+10Almost: Twitbook.
- GoneGreen, on 03/05/2009, -1/+9I'm with ya brother.
- inactive, on 03/05/2009, -2/+9Its like listening to Culture Club, sure it sounded cool at the time, but who can really admit they were a fan of the band. Could you, at the time, really think that Boy George would have turned into such a freak-a-zoid?
These are, as you suggested, just fads and Twitter is just another social fad. - ILoveBoobies, on 03/05/2009, -1/+8I would have love to have been a business analyst at Twitter.
Requirement: type something in a box, hit save.
Done. - inactive, on 03/05/2009, -5/+12Its not that they dont like Twitter, its probably because you keep trying to get them to use it, so much that its starting to annoy them. Its either that or they really dont enjoy reading about your poop fantasies.
- stjoad, on 03/05/2009, -1/+7Facebitter
- MScrip, on 03/05/2009, -0/+6Facebook never replaced the phone.
It does, however, open the door to other things. Sending short messages on someone's Wall, and sending long messages instead of email, and sharing photos instead of Flickr, and status updates instead of Twitter.
Until Facebook offers voice chat... your phone is safe! - Markpdotcom, on 03/05/2009, -0/+6Twatbook
- 22pages, on 03/05/2009, -0/+6Wow, what an amazing amount of bile.
Twitter and Facebook both have their place. FB is very useful for keeping in touch with people. For example, I am going next weekend to visit a town I used to live in. I could email all my old friends and call them, or I can just change my status to "will be in SF next weekend. Who wants to grab a drink?" Since my friends check FB, they see the message, and can comment back etc. It is actually a useful information system. Twitter can do the same, but seems more useful for following people. Some people do actually twitter about interesting things, so you can sometimes find useful stuff related to your work or hobbies.
Note: I don't work for or benefit from pedaling either service. I just think like anything else, they have a use that can be beneficial in the right context and wanted to present some counterpoint to the overwhelming twitter and FB sux @$$ sheeple storm that seems to be going on here. - JammoBlammo, on 03/05/2009, -1/+6Crack has a short-lasting rush, followed by a crash. Your obsessive use of Facebook ensures by nature that you will be looking for a newer, better fix as soon as it becomes available. Moderate users are more likely to be long-time users (of Facebook, not crack).
- abrasion, on 03/05/2009, -0/+5Agreed completely FB has it's own stupid crap but it does have genuine uses.
- CaughtThinking, on 03/05/2009, -3/+8In terms of functionality what does Twitter provide by default beyond the equivalent of a Facebook status? Search? Laughable service. The emperor has no clothes and only the random clear thinker seems to make note of it.
*Wait wait!* Twitter "Apps!". Oh those things that respond to a text string? Yeah that can't be duplicated anywhere. (rolleyes) - inactive, on 03/05/2009, -1/+6Twatbite
- inactive, on 03/05/2009, -3/+7At this point, I'm just begging for Twitter to "collide" with anything. Be it Facebook, or a brick wall.
- Phocion55, on 03/05/2009, -4/+8Or, for example, came across this on my Twitter feed:
"Studying the National Cancer Institute's Enterprise Vocabulary Services (EVS) for semweb apps: http://tinyurl.com/awloay "
Incredibly relevant to my area of research, and a resource I wouldn't have found had it not been posted.
Follow interesting/knowledgeable people. Ignore boring ones. What is so hard about this concept that Digg can't seem to grasp? - FredFredrickson, on 03/05/2009, -2/+6Personally, I don't care what happens to either site - but I think it's ridiculous to think that people would choose one or the other, because we all know the real attention whores who like this stuff will just use both. Twitter is useless micro-blogging garbage, and FaceBook has grown into a monster it probably shouldn't have.
- representDLV, on 03/05/2009, -3/+7The only people that like Twitter are the people paid to like it. There is absolutely no use for it.
- representDLV, on 03/05/2009, -1/+5a website no one uses
- bffoley, on 03/05/2009, -4/+8Wow, someone's a little defensive about their favorite social networks.
- phogasmic, on 03/05/2009, -1/+5FAcebook has nothing to worry about from Twitter and vice versa, two completely different uses. Leave it to the MSM to get retarded about it.
- copypastry, on 03/05/2009, -1/+5let's just put em together and call it twatbook
- mywhitenoise, on 03/05/2009, -2/+5I wish they all died.
- Smokeydabear, on 03/05/2009, -0/+3"Because it's dull you twit, it'll hurt more."
- shinkou, on 03/06/2009, -0/+3Once upon a time, there was something called instant messenger...
- zorabthegreek, on 03/05/2009, -0/+3at least digg comments are entertaining.
- mywhitenoise, on 03/05/2009, -3/+6I always ask that when people tell me they have a facebook or twitter.
- creepermclurker, on 03/05/2009, -0/+3Heaven forbid you should get off your lazy phone using ass and actually visit with your friends in person.
(See, now doesn't that sound dumb?) - bixel, on 03/05/2009, -3/+6these are not fads man, this is going to become the new LIFE as we know it. We are the brink of a new era of epoch-ness collective hive of feelers questing. Its the something of blah blah yarble yammer yammer -- Screw these stupid websites I have real friends who drink beer!
- newsboys, on 03/05/2009, -0/+2@Jammo Pushing the metaphor, crack is already refined cocaine - Facebook itself continues to evolve and offer a better GUI and features fairly regularly, therefore creating a more 'lasting rush'. Most users on facebook are moderate users, and use the site because it's simply the easiest way to keep in touch with friends and family, especially for photo and video sharing. Once they up their resolution on their photos to 1024x768 they will compete with free flickr on par for photos, and they compete with Youtube for their free service for HD videos. Currently flickr charges if you want to do HD video, and Youtube doesn't do pictures. Facebook seems to integrate the best of both worlds without limiting how much you can share, either, and makes it easy to share with your friends.
- Dumbledorito, on 03/05/2009, -2/+4"Twitter, by Sarah Lacey. Accept no substitutes. Because you're worth it."
- dystra, on 03/05/2009, -1/+3this guys serious
- mclaincausey, on 03/06/2009, -0/+2I'll admit I didn't RTA, but the premise is absurd. Facebook at least has some revenue streams, and it's a totally different app for different things. They share the status update paradigm (though you can use Twitter for other purposes such as marketing), but that's about it. I think most people utilize Facebook for more than the status update feature, central though it may be to many. Twitter's cool, but how are they going to make money? They are no threat whatsoever to Facebook.
- VelvetoneFusion, on 03/05/2009, -0/+2I object. Second Life was barely ever a trend.
- useraccess, on 03/05/2009, -0/+2It's facebook for business professionals and it is great. I am a consultant and it allows me to keep track of all my clients. If they move to a new position or company, I know about it. You can also use it to mine for sales leads. Great application for business professionals. It had 35 million users as of February 2009.
- jbrevik, on 03/05/2009, -1/+3Once people start running out of alter cyber-egos, what will we do? I cant even imagine how many people are a 13 year old girl, a 29 year old corporate executive, a 17 year old moron with bob marley or che pictures plastered everywhere at the same time . This ***** is getting rediculous
- shujin, on 03/05/2009, -0/+2well now i have to go get a burger
- Markpdotcom, on 03/05/2009, -0/+2If only the rest of the twitter users would come to this realisation, the world would be a better place! Digg would be short of about 30% paid content though ;)
- RonBurgundy76, on 03/07/2009, -0/+2Looks like you're too oldschool for Web 2.0.
